I bought this a few months ago after reading quite a lot of positive reviews on it here. I wanted a cheaper mascara to use for work and during the day so I can save my Clinique one for weekends and night time (as its bloody expensive!) I got it from Boots for £4.70 which was very cheap and the kind of price I had been looking for. I chose the colour 'Blackest black', despite the only other colour being "very black", which confused me a bit, didn't think there would be much of a difference between the two!
The Bottle…
To be honest the bottle does look cheap, but at the same time I quite like it. It is a pink bottle with a green lid, and black lettering saying "GREAT LASH mascara". It is a squared off bottle with a rounded lid. It looks quite retro and reminds me of make-up I used to buy when I was in my early teens (about 10 years ago!) Some would describe it as old-fashioned which it is, I'm sure I remember seeing the same bottle for this mascara when I was young! But all the same it looks quite cool in a quirky way! The bottle has a screw top which is easy to open and close.
The Brush…
The first thing I noticed was that the brush is surprisingly small. It is made up of tiny bristles going in a spiral around the wand. When I started to use the brush I noticed it didn't really cling to my lashes very much and kind of swept past them instead, which meant it didn't have a lot of impact on the overall look of my lashes.
The size of the brush also annoyed me, it meant I had to spend twice as long to cover all of my eyelashes, and my eyes aren't even that big. Also because I was having to spend longer and try harder to get the brush to take to my lashes I ended up making more mistakes…
The Mascara…
Quite a lot of the mascara comes out on the brush which is good, and it was a nice consistency when wet. It didn't come out clumpy or too watery. The mascara itself spread over my eyelashes quite nicely despite the brush not helping. The colour of the mascara was as suggested, it was very black which is good.
Unfortunately I found the mascara required quite a few coats to have any effect on my eyelashes and even then they hardly looked any different. It does a good job of making your eyelashes look darker but in terms of volume or curl it had little affect. I also found that when I was applying it the mascara very easily ended up splashing or smudging onto my eyelid which I found really annoying. Even when I had tried using the mascara for a couple of weeks this was still happening. I definitely think this was to do with the brush.
It dries fairly quickly which is a positive point, however I wasn't keen on the feel after it had dried. It made my lashes feel hard like I had put glue on them. This felt kind of uncomfortable on my eyes and also meant it was fairly hard to remove. This was possibly also linked to the fact that I had to apply so many coats of the mascara. A plus point is that mascara lasted quite well, I never noticed it drying out or going clumpy and I did use it for about a month (despite not being too keen)
Overall Opinion…
I really wanted to like this mascara after reading so many positive reviews but I just wasn't that impressed with it. I found it time consuming and it felt bad quality. I suppose it is very cheap but I still wouldn't buy it again. Therefore I'm giving it 2 stars.
