The other week I was invited to a party. ‘Great’, I thought, ‘I could do with a good night out’. Only thing was, this was a punk themed party, and to be honest, I didn’t own anything remotely punkish. So I went out and bought a whole new outfit for the occasion. Then, on to the make-up. I have blonde hair and fair skin, and so I usually go for the natural look, which meant I didn’t have anything that would really fit the bill. I decided to go for smokey eyes, so I bought some black eyeshadow and eyeliner, but when I came to the mascara I was baffled by what seemed like hundreds of different colours, brands and types.
I was looking for something to give me long, thick, separated, dramatic looking lashes, to make a big impact, so I began looking for a volumising mascara. I then remembered hearing good things about Maybeline
Volume Express Mascara, and went to take a look. That’s when I noticed Maybelline Lash Expansion Mascara. What drew me to this was that it says, ‘Wraps each lash 360° for thicker, longer lashes’. I’d never seen another mascara with the same claims, and it sounded like something that should work, so I decided to give it a go. So I picked up a tube in Very Black, because I thought this would give me the dramatic look I was after.
The mascara comes packaged in moulded plastic on a card beck. The Maybelline New York logo is written down the right hand side, while the name of the mascara, and brief details of what it does, are written in a collumn down the left hand side. On the back of the card is the name of the mascara, a more detailed explanation of what it does and how it works, and a list of ingredients.
The mascara tube is a blue colour, which looks black under certain light, and has silver writing down the side stating the name and make of the mascara. The lid has a silver ring around the bottom, and a grey plastic ball set into the top. The lid is the usual kind you find on a mascara tube, with the applicator stem attached to the inside. The tube looks nice and expensive and good quality, so it’s not something you’re going be forever hiding in your handbag. The tube is also quite chunky compared to a lot of mascaras, which makes it easier to hold.
The lid twists off extremely smoothly and cleanly, to reveal a very clean applicator stem and an evenly covered brush, with no clumps at all. The brush is about an inch long, and looks like a traditional spiral mascara brush, in an almost conical shape. The brush is extremely easy to use, and never gets clogged up. I find it always has just the right amount of mascara on, never too much or too little. The bristles are quite soft, meaning it is gentle on lashes, and won’t scratch the skin if it slips. The brush also works very well to create even coverage, separating each lash, and never creating clumps, or spider legs. It is large enough that you only need to use it once to cover the whole of your lashes, except maybe sometimes missing those elusive lashes right at the outer corner of the eye. According to the back of the packaging, the ‘patented lash-wrapping brush’ has lash-hugging bristles which gently wrap 360° around the lashes for maximum thickness and length, and I have found these claims to be true.
The back of the packaging also claims that Lash Expansion’s formula glides on smoothly, completely enveloping each lash to create a captivating expanse of lashes that lasts all day. Another claim it lived up to greatly. The mascara went on really smoothly and easily in one single sweep, and seemed to coat both sides of my lashes evenly. This made my lashes look at least 3 times as thick as usual, without clogging or sticking my lashes together. I was also able to quickly build up more layers to create an even more dramatic look, although obviously the more layers i applied, the dryer it became. The colour looked amazing, very intense, and my lashes were longer, thicker, separated and more defined. The mascara dried quickly, and didn’t feel dry or hard, even when set.
I have sensitive eyes, and usually find that mascara irritates them, and the surrounding area of skin, but this one didn’t irritate at all. My lashes didn’t feel heavy either, which is a disadvantage I’ve found with a lot of other mascaras.
Then came the ultimate test; the party. 7 hours of drinking, dancing, laughing, and rubbing my eyes, and then even a walk home in the rain. But this passed the test with flying colours. Not once did it smudge, run, or become clogged. I was very impressed by it’s staying power. This mascara does not claim to be waterproof, but it definitely survived the walk in the rain. Not only did it stay put all night, but it stayed as perfect as when I put it on. Then, when the party was over, and I was ready for bed, it was easily removed with just a basic make-up remover, leaving no trace.
Overall, this was a very impressive mascara, and definitely the best I’ve tried yet. And at £6.49 for the 6.5ml tube, you might think it’s a bit expensive, but once you see and feel the quality of it, you will think it’s a bargain, just as I did. 'Wow', was the reaction i got from my boyfriend when he saw my loveley new lashes, which pleased me no end! So, if it’s dramatic, thick, long, flirtatious lashes you’re after, this is perfect!
