First i should say that this is a review for the actual product and not the advert as it indicates above, im sure the advert is lovely, however i havent seen it, that could make reviewing it a tad tricky.
Ive use maybelline mascara for years now but until now have been a "lash discovery" girl, i loved the mini brush and never had a problem with it, unfortunately i cant find it anymore so guess its out of production. Anyway having come to the end of my "lash discovery" i needed a replacemnet, after alot of searching and rejecting types because their brushes were too thick i decided to try "lash stylist" with the hopes that the comb would have a similar effect as the mini brush.
I chose the black version in waterproof, i would have preffered brown but that wasnt available in the water proof option at the time of purchase.
APPEARENCE/PACKAGING The mascara comes in a plastic blister on a card backing, the card has application instructions, ingredients etc on the back. the front illustrates
the brush, the effect it should have on the lashes and the colour choice.
Appearence wise the mascara tube is quite chunky and black, the waterproof option has metallic blue writing where the non waterproof has silver. the lid unscrews like most other mascara's. it's not huge but isnt as slim as many other mascaras are and will need a reasonable amount of space in the make up bag. The comb is made up of 2 rows of teeth and are set at angles, not parralel to eachother. i suppose you could say the chunkyness may be a good thing allowing for the tube to hold more mascara.
ADVISED APPLICATION- Sweep the Lash Styler from base to tip to style lashes with sculpted volume and lift. Keep applying additional coats to take lashes from everyday to glam. Do not let product dry between coats - just keep styling!
WHAT MAYBELLINE CLAIM- Style your way to our hottest lash look, direct from New York City… The bold, open-eyed look! Removes easily with Maybelline Expert Eyes moisturizing eye makeup remover(from £2.99 for 2.3oz). For a complete stylized look, also use Line Stylist eyeliner. Line Stylist eyeliner(from £3.99 per pencil) precisely applies thin or thick lines allowing you to create the look you want.
The reality- my lashes neither felt silky smooth or clump free and i was happy to stick with my current liner and remover rather than pay out even more.
TEETHING PROBLEMS? My first application didnt go too well, the comb picks up alot of mascara and made the eyelashes thick and cloggy, even after alot of brushing there was little improvement, i found my self reaching for the old mini brush in the hopes of being able to remove some of the mascara and tidy the lashes. i also ended up ruining my eyeshadow as the mascara ended up on my eyelids too. eventually after alot of preening it looked ok, from a distance, get too close and it looked like 2 spiders were living on my face! The lashes felt brittle almost like i could snap them off. It did stay on all day though(well the bits i didnt pick at did) i found it came off quite easily at the end of the day by using Boots eyemake up remover pads.
ATTEMPT 2-a little more success this time round. after scraping off 99% of the mascara picked up by the comb and using a much lighter hand i had a far better result, still cant get the outer or bottom lashes right though, far less clumping but still a few lashes sticking together.Less aware that im wearing it. The lashes still fell waxy though.
PANDA EYES- day 3 brought something completely new and partly my fault, after a bad night i was very tired and along with yawning came eye rubbing, this smudged the mascara leaving black smudges under my eyes. yes my fault as i shouldnt have been rubbing my eyes but it should be able to wothstand it, its meant to be water proof after all.
THE EXPERIMENTS- The beauty experts will not like this first one but i decided to see how long it would stay on, 2 days and nights it lasted before wearing thin enough for me to feel my own lashes I also decided to check the waterproof claim but as no rain storm was available and only a loon would stand out in one to check their mascara, i threw loads of water over my face, it didnt run as bad as i thought it would but i did have some running, obviously not water proof but water resistant.
MY VERDICT I was obviously very spoiled by my lash discovery as i dont find lash stylist mascara nearly as successful as other people i know who use it, while they claim to get good results including the tiny lashes i found the opposite, the small lashes and bottom lashes were hard work with lash stylist, i also dont find the comb all that impressive, its far bulkier than the mini brush and isnt as delicate. This isn't a product for someone looking for the natural look, if you want dramatic 50's/60's glam then it'll be perfect.
Retails at £6.99 and available from maybelline stockists in store and online including superdrug and boots.
