Our very basic Hover model had given up the ghost and retired to that vacuum haven that all old and out of suck vacuum’s go to. It’s poor lung’s were so full of dust and sand that one morning when I plugged her in, she just made a wheezing, whirring, coughing noise and died right there in front of my eyes. Now over the grief, we realised that a replacement was badly in need and off to our local Carrefour store we went to see what we could find.
The selection was rather limited with most being the cylinder type. I can tell you I just don’t like these models, not sure why but they give me the feeling that you should be going WALKIES with them and not hovering a home. Anyway I had the choice of 2 uprights, first being another rather basic Hoover model and I couldn’t bring myself to kill another one as I knew it just wasn’t up to the amount of work I would be giving it.
The second was the Maytag Bag less Upright Twin Chamber Cleaning System-model number U5288 This claimed on the box to have all the functions and abilities that my trusty Dyson back home in Scotland had. Can I just point out here that Dyson was, at the time still unheard of on the Dubai market (and they say Scotland is behind the times! Ha) Anyway not having much of a choice we thought what have we to lose we’ll give it a go. Off to the cash desk to pay and get my new toy home to try out.
When I opened the box the following jigsaw puzzle greeted me:-
A handle The Centre clear dust collector Rack for holding on board tools The base part with wheels, belt & hose attached A packet of screws Tubes and brushes
Oh! No I squealed shouting hubby to my rescue,’ it’s all broken’ I exclaimed. “Carol” dear patient hubby retorted ‘you have to build it first’. Apparently larger household appliances arrive in packaging similar to what I had before me. I did know this; I just appeared thick so hubby would do the hard bit for me. The assembly was quick and painless for me as I watched intriguingly as hubby slipped and screwed the above items together until Hey Presto before me was my shinny new dark teal coloured vacuum cleaner.
It does advise in the manual that before using your new cleaner you read the contents of the manual Okay! How to, how to, how to yep know all that stuff now lets see how good it is with the sand and dust. After finding the on/off switch and lever to drop the handle I was on my way through the lounge, hall, 1st bedroom and then our bedroom the vacuum moved from carpet to tiled floor with ease eating up everything in its way. That was 2 years and some 5 months ago and I haven’t looked back since.
The Maytag can be used at 3 carpet levels, I have found if I keep it on the lowest carpet pile setting it cleans both tiled floor and carpets without the need to continually change the setting. I use the cleaning tool setting when I am doing the patio door frames, window frames, tops of the curtains and poles. The Maytag comes with the following tools included:-
All are very easy to attach and detach and can be washed in warm water with a mild detergent, rinsed in clean water and air dried. The clear Dust Collector, Maytag call it a Dirt Cup. Consists of:-
Lid Dirt Cup Pre Filter HEPA Cartridge Filter Dirt Inlet Opening
Emptying is very easy by lifting the cup, pulling straight out, remove lid and tip upside down over a bin, tap sides gently to remove loose particles of dust etc. There is no need to remove the HEPA Cartridge from the pre filter every time you empty the cup, but it is advisable to remove and clean on a regular basis. I clean my cartridge once a month by running under the tap being careful not to let any water go down inside the centre of the cartridge, again I air dry before replacing inside the Dirt Cup and snapping back into position on the vacuum.
There is a 12 volt headlight on the base part which enables you to see where you are going should you be hovering in the dark…….he, he, he, like my neighbours would be chuffed at that. I don’t think. The Maytag has a 220-240v 625w motor which has proven to be more than ample for my needs over the past 29 months.
All in all I would say I am extremely pleased with my Maytag albeit a trifle on the heavy side weighing in at 1 st. and 5 lbs (sorry don’t do metric) I find I don’t need any additional exercise on the days that I hoover.
We bought the Maytag for Dirham's 795.00 which is approximately £112 depending on the exchange rate used. It came with a 1 year warranty and touch wood, we have had no problems at all with it.
