The Mazda recommended seat was horrible, made of foam, did not recline, squashes children.
Mazda were not prepared to show me results of tests that the seat was safe in the car. They just recommended their seat but would not say that this seat had been tested as OK for the Demio
The reason seats do not fit is because the buckle fixed to the car was too long and ended up to close to the lock on the car seats. I asked Mazda if the could change one of the buckles that they had in their other cars, all had not material between the car and buckle and were about 2 inches shorter, they said they could not do this as the car would no longer be standard.

Quick review of Mazda Demio 1.5i
I bought my Demio in 2000. I have had no problems with it, and no major repair bills until this year (2007!) It is excellent for families wanting a small but very usable car. I had no problems buying a car seat for the kids, although it was annoying that I had to put the baby in the rear when he was tiny as Mazda are not allowed to disconnect the front airbag. Excellent car - brilliant value and, yes, I will buy another Mazda when my Demio finally dies. ...
