f you enjoy the open air and real driving, then the MX-5 is for you. This car is reliable, has the looks, delivers rewarding driving experiences and is packaged in a simple yet classic style. It really does have classic status, being introduced in 1989, the shape is hardly changed from then and most people will instantly recognise one. This car provoked the return of other 2 seater roadster models from MG and Fiat (the MGF and Barchetta). My car is a 1991 model, yet belies its age on the road.
For me, the appeal is its simplicity. It gives sheer pleasure when driving on most roads, but is at its best on those open winding country lanes. Top-down motoring at its best. The hood is easy to operate, and has a zip-out rear window. This is plastic on older models which can get scratched, so take care. Newer cars have a glass window with heating elements. Confidence is inspired as the car hugs the road so well, making bends a dream. Another bonus is the affordable running costs. Insurance is acceptable, especially if the car is garaged and fitted with an imobiliser. Servicing is economic, and fuel consumption ranges from 35 to 42 mpg (depending on driving style of course!). For the DIY person, most servicing can be done at home. Some special equipment will be needed for tuning etc, but that is not often required.
Perfomance wise the 1.6i is adequate. It feels faster than it is. There are many modern saloons that can equal it, but they cannot deliver the same fun factor. Beside who wants to win those traffic light bursts! The MX-5 produces a much bigger grin after driving in rewarding manner, able to get the best out of most traffic situations.
Space is at a premium. Squashy luggage bags are best for the boot, it is not best suited to hard cases, and it will not accomodate vasts amount. But then that is not the purpose of this vehicle.
In summary, there are very few cars that can be afforded that give so much every-day driving pleasure and yet be regarded as a modern classic. Buy one!

I am 17 and learning to drive now. I want a Mazda MX-5 because I reckon they are the nicest looking cars around for a fairly affordable price. Also, they can be done up nicely.

Great op. I think that the boot is rather small though and so is not very suitable for family trips. The foot space is good thoughj. Once again great op....
Advantages: A great affordable sports car with fun driving added in for free! Disadvantages: If you are a big shopper like me, you may need to put the roof down!
