    Great to drive and...

The Mazda MX5 was my final choice of purchase after being given some money recently. I was looking for something fun and sporty, but originally looked at four seater options such as the Astra Coupe and VW Golf.

After reading good magazine reviews, I decided to test drive the MX5 - I was not disappointed. The low chassis hugs the road and the steering is responsive. The 1.6 is more than capable in the lower gears and the tight gearbox makes it easy to get the most from the engine. The driving experience was miles better than anything I had driven previously and this alone made me sure it was the car for me.

Practicality is of course an issue when looking at owning a sports car, but the MX5 has cheap running costs, is supremely durable and insurance is good value for a two seater. The roof is pretty easy to use and the boot swallows enough for weekend breaks or the weekly shop. My wife and I both use this car daily and it effortlessly transforms from a city run-around into a sporty weekend cruiser.

The equipment levels do not usually receive good reviews, but if you shop around you will find most dealers will through in the essential alloy wheels for nothing. Leather seats are worth looking for if you’re buying second hand or can afford a bit extra new. The standard kit is about right for a car of this type, power steering, ABS and airbags leave you wanting for little else - after all you’re usually enjoying the driving experience! A real back window is a nice touch too.

Last, but certainly not least are the looks. Looking good with the roof up and even better with it down the MX5 makes a balance between elegance and arrogance. This car (in my opinion) beats the MG TF for looks hands down - drives better too!

In summary, if you want one of the best value, best looking drivers cars money can buy which is still practical enough for every day life, then the MX5 is probably for you.
