I’m hungry. Really hungry. I’ve eaten sweet FA all day (stressed), and I need something tasty and juicy to put in my mouth. With no men being handy, I’m being forced to make do with food. Still, at least it aint sprouts…
Micro Chicken Wings are another of those foods, which we cook in the genius invention of the microwave (students best mate!). They’re basically just chicken wings, covered in a variety of sauces, giving the different flavours on offer. Simple enough eh! But can microwave food ever be nice? Drunken Abby investigates…
Micro Chicken Wings come in a range of flavours, including BBQ and Cajun (which I have in front of me right now!) They cost around £1.35 for a box, which is pretty expensive, but they’re often on offer, so it’s good to look around.

The cooking of these is fantastically simple (told you the microwave was my best mate!) Unlike other microwave products DO NOT OPEN THE FLAP ON THE BOX DURING COOKING! The inside of the box has a foil type lining, which, I think, stops the chicken going soggy. This is Abby’s made up physics though – I may be wrong! The microwave times are as follows
650 Watt microwave – 4 mins 750 Watt microwave – 3 mins 30 seconds 850 Watt microwave – 3 mins
It also advises to leave the product to stand for 1 minute after cooking. Anyone who has read my Fries To Go op will know my views on standing time! (It sucks and no one does it, in case you haven’t read it!)
So, how do these little babies taste?
When you first open the box (which is really easy to do), you’re greeted with a gorgeous, sweet, spicy kind of smell. Each box has 5 pieces of chicken in, which are all pretty small, and all on the bone. Obviously, because they are on the bone, these shouldn’t be given to children, in case they choke on them (or people who have a habit of choking on things I suppose!)
The chicken itself is quite spicy. I love spicy food so I find it quite mild, but my sister, who hates all things, which aren’t as bland as water, says they set her mouth on fire (big wimp!) The spices do leave a slight tingling sensation in your mouth, but not some mad inferno raging. The sauce tastes very much like it smells – it does have a slight sweetness to it, but this doesn’t take over from the spicy taste. For me this is great, because I’m not a huge fan of things being too sweet. The chicken itself is surprisingly nice – it’s not at all dry, which surprised me, because I tend to find that microwaving chicken makes it really flaky and not very nice. On the wings, the chicken comes away from the bone really easily, and you really get a lot out of it. However, on the legs there tends to be quite a lot of gristle and fat, so you lose out. However, each box only tends to have 1 or 2 legs, so they majority of the pieces are yummy wings!
As you’d probably expect, these are really really messy when it comes to eating them, as you have no choice but to eat them with your fingers! By the end of the box your hands are covered in oil and spice, so I’d highly recommend a piece of kitchen roll by your side for when you’re finished! The advantage of this is, of course, that if you’re eating them out of the box with your fingers, you have zero washing up to do! Fantastic!
So, what are the bad things about these little babies then? Well, they’re not bloody good for you for a start. Each 135g box has about 305 calories in and 18.5g of fat in! You could argue in vain that calorie wise, some crisps have around this amount, but you can’t deny that these aren’t going to do your waist any good. To be honest though, at such a high price, they’re not the kind of thing you’d have daily anyway, they’re just a great thing to have in the freezer if you’re going to have a late night at work.
I’d definitely recommend these as something to have in your freezer, and to stock up on if you see them on offer. But at least I managed to get something hot and juicey in my mouth…
Advantages: Quick to cook and currently on offer Disadvantages: You need a microwave
...upon the very thing - McCain Micro Chicken Wings. They are currently on offer at Sainsbury's for 99p so I figured nothing ventured, nothing gained. At that price it was considerably cheaper than a packaged sandwich so I popped a packet in the trolley. I figured they'd be delicious or repulsive - I'm glad to report that it was the first description.
The packaging is one that will be familiar to most. Quite confusingly and reassuring at the same time ... ...There is the familiar McCain logo, a big 'NEW' splashed over the other corner and a picture of a monster chicken wing in the middle. In the right hand corner is a very small logo telling you that they can be microwaved in just three minutes.
The cooking instructions are very simple:
1. Place the unopened box in the centre of microwave.
2. Cook on full power (for 3, 3.5 or 4 minutes dependent upon the power of your machine)
3. Open the box by ...

Advantages: Cheap, Very BBQy Disadvantages: VERY VERY (temperature) HOT
Okay, so I'm talking chicken wings, but really, the bigger the better. I think most people probably do their shopping the same way. We go out for just a few items and end up coming home with a whole trolley worth of stuff, and wonder why the grocery bills are so high. For me, I usually come home with the same stuff everytime anyway; why try something new when all the usual stuff tastes just fine.
Well... a bargain always catches my eye and if it's ... ...trolley goes a 99p package of 'New' BBQ Chicken Wings. According to the package it is a great snack or meal for one.
So they sit in the freezer for a couple of weeks until I start to run out of food; not wanting to drop another 60 pounds on groceries, I see what I can find. Lo and behold, it's my instant meal in a box.
So following the directions, I open the box along the perforated lines, pop it in the microwave, and wait for the four minutes ...

McCain do a range of micro snacks, but if these are the standard they are set by, I probably wont try any others either.

Recently, for reasons I'm not even sure of, I've taken a liking to the chicken wings from pizza hut, although, it's not always easy to get them, and being honest, they are quite expensive for all they are....
While shopping in Tescos, I discovered these on offer, and decided to try them to see if they were an adequate replacement for the pizza hut ones.
These come in a small box, weighing 135g. The box itself isn't particularly eyecatching. It's ... ...picture of 2 wings on it. There is also a perforated flap for ease of opening. The cooking instructions are written in easy to follow steps on the underside of the box.
These are easy to cook. Just put the box as it is, straight out of the freezer, in the microwave and cook for whatever time it states on the side for your microwave.
I had the barbecue flavour and while cooking, there was a really nice barbecue smell, a tangy tomatoey smell, which ...

If you are lucky enough to be blessed with children as I am, then you will know that making them something to eat will prove to be a less than easy task.

"Mum I don't like peas, or carrots"
"Mum I don't want the same as her"
Any of this sound familiar?
Well here is the solution, microwavable handy meals such as the McCainMicro range.
Micro chips, microchickenwings and micro pizzas.
My kids just adore the pizzas and as they only take 3 mins to cook they keep the little terrors quite for a couple of minutes.
All you have to do is take the pizza out of it's box, turn the box upside down so that the metalic card is facing up.
Then place the pizza on the top, microwave for 3 minutes and hey presto, your kids can enjoy.
This week, I decided to give them the spicy chicken flavour as a change ...
McCainMicro Pizza's have been out for the last few years. McCain was mostly famous for their Micro Chips, but in the last few years they have branched out in the Micro foods department and added ChickenWings, Garlic Bread, Toasties and Pizza's.
The Pizza's come in 3 normal flavours
Cheese and Tomato
Spicy Chicken
Pepperoni
But I have seen limited edition ones
Bacon
Chilli
Actually I think the Spicy Chicken one started off as a limited edition, but now it is here to stay.
A rectangular shaped Pizza. The lenght of it is slightly longet than a Micro Chips box, but probably the same width. You have to open the box and tear the lid off to cook it in the Microwave. Also it is wrapped in cellophane, so that has to be torn off.
You leave it in the bottom half of the box to cook. It lies on a grey strip, wheather this is ...

From what I could take from the website it seems to be that it was around 2000 when McCain started venturing into the frozen pizza?s and from then expanded to making the frozen chickenwings, toasties and all of the frozen microwavable ?delicacies? that we have today.
