Advantages: None. They're cheap, but they'd want to be! Disadvantages: Just about totally inedible!
...So when I spotted these McCain Micro Pizzas in the supermarket they seemed like an ideal solution.
Just pop them in the microwave for a few minutes, and voila, you have an instant delicious wee snack sized pizza.
WRONG!!
You have an instant wee snack sized pizza all right, that much is true, but scratch the word delicious from my previous description.
~ ~ For something to be delicious it must first of all be edible, ... ...claim against McCain for a serious breach of the Trade Descriptions Act.
The pizza that I bought (and I use the term pizza loosely) was the cheese and tomato variety. They have other flavours, like ham and mushroom, chicken, and pepperoni, but I thought I couldn’t go too far wrong with good old cheese and tomato, and that all the kids would be sure to like it.

~ ~ The wee lass had some of her friends over for a ‘sleep over’ recently. I’m sure all the parents who are reading this will know what I’m talking about. Three or four young ones running riot until the early hours of the morning, watching movies, playing computer games, yapping at incredibly high volume, and emptying the fridge and larder of anything that looks even vaguely edible.
~ ~ Finger food is the order of the day at a sleep over, and having been caught out a number of times in the past (they once scoffed three *WHOLE* packets of my favourite McVities Plain Chocolate Digestive!) I was determined that we would be well prepared for the locust horde on this occasion. Pizza always seems to go down well with kids. (and me too, for that matter) But it seems to take forever to bake in the oven, especially with a bunch of ravenous youngsters asking ‘Is it ready yet?’ So when I spotted these McCain Micro Pizzas in the supermarket they seemed like an ideal solution. ~ ~ For something to be delicious it must first of all be edible, and I’m not too sure that I wouldn’t have a claim against McCain for a serious breach of the Trade Descriptions Act.
~ ~ So come sleep over night, and the kids are firmly ensconced in the study, watching some girly video or other, and giggling away good style to themselves. My better half is watching the Late, Late Show (chat show) on the telly in the sitting room, so the mad cabbie is on kitchen duty. (bah!!) It’s time to feed the hungry mob before they descend on the kitchen and leave me with nothing to eat but some year old pasta!
~ ~ So into the microwave goes the McCain pizza. A couple of minutes are all it takes, and I have the plates ready. But what’s this?? I take out the supposedly scrumptious concoction, and the first thing I notice is that it’s hard. *VERY* hard! A little experiment with an ordinary knife bears no results, as it’s making no impression on the hardened lava like surface of the pizza. Stronger measures are obviously called for, so I resort to a steak knife with a sharply serrated edge, which would have no problem cutting an elephant’s throat. OK. I’ve (just about) managed to cut a bit off the pizza, after breaking so much sweat that I feel badly in need of a refreshing shower. I decide I better try it out. It HAS to taste better than it looks, doesn’t it? Hmmm. There doesn’t appear to be too much cheese here, and the tomato stuff on the top looks as though someone has simply poured on a dab of ketchup and spread it around a little. Arghhh!! It tastes as revolting as it looks! Discretion stops me from actually writing what I thought of it, as this is a family website, and I don’t want to get thrown off for using foul language. But rest assured it’s not an experience that the mad cabbie will be repeating in the near future. (Or even the FAR future!)
~ ~ This revolting excuse for a pizza costs €1.28 for a 135g portion in my local supermarket, so it’s fairly cheap. Mind you, it would want to be, because no matter what the price, I couldn’t imagine in my widest dreams that they would have any loyal customers, who’d be daft enough to try them out twice. I did actually let the girls try them out, on the very faint premise that maybe it was just me that didn’t like them, and they would think they were scrumptious. I said nothing, produced the goods, and disappeared quickly back to the kitchen. It didn’t take too long!
“Daddy. We don’t like these pizzas, they’re too hard, and they taste horrible. Have you got any chocolate biscuits in the press?”
Arghh!!! There go my favourite McVities again. You can’t win, can you?
~ ~ DEFINITELY not recommended by the mad cabbie. In fact, I’d give them ‘minus’ points in the Ciao ratings if it was possible, but as it is I’ll have to be content in giving them one star, the lowest rating possible. Only buy this muck if you’re a total masochist!
Advantages: Nice looking paperweight and sturdy enough to use in small dwellings Disadvantages: Looks and tastes revolting, costs too much money
...I thought.
When McCain brought out the old microwave pizzas my heart skipped a beat. No more waiting for the spotty kid on the moped to screech up to my doorstep to give me my pizza fix. No more waiting for my frozen pizza to burn on the outside and stay cold in the middle. There was a God, his name was McCain and he had given me a gift.
Now I have sampled pizzas from all over the world and in every shape and form. Upon opening the box, I could ... ...pleasant experience. Let's face it a pizza should come with sufficient topping, nice and juicy with a light yet crispy base. The tomato should be tangy but not overpowering. The cheese should be mild yet tease you with with it’s stretchyness and tantalise you with it's soft pillowy texture as you sink you teeth into it. (sorry folks I think I have started making up words now, anyway bear with me!).
Looking at my microwave pizza, it resembled a small ...

...microwaves. However, one day a McCain micro pizza appeared in my freezer and curiousity took a hold of me.
It cooks in two minutes thirty seconds. This is impressive. You can't take the cooking time for granted, it's not going to be Pizza Hut, people.
I think the '2-minute-pizza' novelty value is the reason they still sell these. Or perhaps lots of starving oven-less students live off them.
On the back of the box it states various things, including ... ...of half a real pizza, and cooking times.
The box has a 'do not' section which includes: 3. Use this product after its best before date.
Oh, how I love poorly worded food instructions. And I think the fact that these words of wisdom are even included hints at its target market.
It also states not to cook it in a normal oven. This makes me wonder what would happen if I did. Would it explode, perhaps?
The pizza looks like your average frozen pizza, ...

Advantages: Tastes gorgeous, very filling, quick, easy, well-designed package Disadvantages: Slightly over-priced, not world-class cuisine
Frozen meals, and more specifically, ones that can be prepared in just a couple of minutes, seem to have quite a reputation as being tasteless, plastic and altogether unenjoyable to eat. I have to admit that I was under the same impression some months ago, and before I’d tried ‘McCain’s Micro Pizzas’, I wasn’t that much of a fan of what I call ‘fake food’. You know, squidgy cheese, pig’s liver in a ... ...my opinion, ‘McCain’s Micro Chips’ taste like they’ve just come out of a factory where small bits of wood are given a bit of soap to soften them up and then sold at extortionate prices under the label ‘food’, ‘McCain’s Micro Pizzas’ are actually quite tasty. Not least the Spicy Chicken and Cheese and Onion flavours.
At 89p per pizza, they may seem slightly overpriced considering they’re ...

Advantages: Tastes nice, quick and easy. Disadvantages: disintegrates a bit in the microwave, expensive and a load of crap.
I'll be the first to admit that this stuff is a load of sh!te. It really is. From the name, to the packaging, to the pizza itself, this stuff is crap. Although from the price of it, you'd think it's the best pizza in the world. £1:99 down my local One Stop (on a university campus as well! Robbers!!). But I suppose that's One Stop for you. Tesco aren't much cheaper though. For that, you get two small pizzas.
And I love it! That's the student riff ... ...for yourself? Shove one of these in the microwaves and hey presto, your tea is done. 3 minutes is all it takes.
It screams of being processed, it's the kind of thing that Gillian McKeith has nightmares about. It doesn't get much worse than this, but to be fair, I wouldn't touch the MicroChips, MicroNuggets or MicroChickenWings with a barge pole? MicroPizza, though, is acceptable, according to my brain? Ah well.
Basically, you open the rather attractive ...

...out the history of pizza, McCain and even the microwave and honestly - good luck to them, but I fail to see what use that is to the consumer even if it may be interesting to read...well once, not every time. So I'll leave it to them - this review is pizza based not a historical account.
Right then - the pizza:
McCain Micro Pizzas are available in four flavours - pepperoni, ham and mushroom, spicy chicken and this one - the generic cheese and tomato ... ...a rather good pizza. The pizza comes in a 135g packet and offers a single serving for less the a quid - can't say fairer than that. But what of the taste? Tastes great, and cooks in a fraction of the time of a normal pizza - two and a half minutes in my 1000watt microwave, upto 3 minutes in a 650 watt version. You simply remove the lid, which is backed by a reflective(non-foil) material, remove the pizza from its wrapper, place it on the lid, shove ...

Ever in a rush? really hungry!? McCain's Micropizza is the thing for you! This delicous tantalising pizza fufils your tastebuds to the max! There are lots of different types of McCainsMicropizza, Ham and Pinapple, Cheese and Tomato, And Pepperoni. But Spicey Chicken has to be the best! Tender diced pieces of cajun chicken spread over the top of the succulent mozzerella cheese, even saying it sounds tasty!

Bored of the same old food every day then try McCain’s micropizzas, they come in a small rectangular box and only take 3 minutes to cook.
*****WHAT FLAVOURS ARE There*****
McCain’s micropizzas come in four different flavours,
·Pepperoni
·Spicy chicken
·Ham and Mushroom and
·Cheese and tomato.
My favourite is the pepperoni one. It is about 17cm by 9.5cm, it has a standard rectangular pizza base, tomato puree sauce, cheese and mini pepperoni pieces (about the size of a one pence piece).
The box has easy to follow cooking instructions, nutritional information, storage instructions, the McCain guarantee, the free customer care line number, barcode, best before date, which flavour pizza it is, a picture of the pizza, warnings etc.

to the usual Pepperoni or cheese and tomato varieties.
The result was very good, both of my kids loved the taste and unfortunately, wanted more.
McCainMicroPizzas cost between 49p and 79p for a single slice.
The box is designed more for children with bright colours and jazzy writing as I suppose It is children that they are aimed at.
The calorie and fat content differs with each flavour, but they don't usually contain much of either. About the same amount as an average bar of chocolate only slightly healthier.
They sell these handy little treats almost anywhere, from your local shop to most of the big supermarkets.
Well worth trying out. ...
