The shops are relatively small compared to the likes of netto and Lidl but they are full to the ceiling with products. My Local one which is called MArtin is a great shop for stationary and being so near to my school attracts loads of the school kids a lunchtime and before school starts.
The prices though are not so brilliant as they seem to charge really high prices for everything. In a local stationary shop a tip ex is 49p per bottle but here In Mc'Colls they have to go and sell it for £1.29. The ready meals and lunches like sandwiches are sometimes cheap but you have to grab 'em the day before they go out of date as they are reduced to 49p or around that. I really think these prices are unjust because no other shop like it sells the products for these really bad prices. The most expensive thing I bought is a bottle of Milk for 99p which I can tell you is not below the average price.
Generally though, the range of products is quite terrific and it is a handy shop for locals, yet I believe that a lack of customers is imminent due to the really high prices of the products.
The shop and the staff are really well presented and the manager knows everyone who visits. Each time I walk in its Hiya Mark which I believe is a great way to maintain customer confidence.
Advantages: Tidy, bright and well organised. Nice range of newspapers Disadvantages: Tend to be a little small and expensive for some goods.
...chain I know simply as McColl's is the English/Welsh flavour of it. McColl's has gained my deepest love within the last few days - at 8:00 on Christmas eve, a power surge wrecked all our christmas tree lights. After the initial panic, we set about replacing the bulbs, checking out all our usual haunts - the 24 hour Sainsbury's and Tescos, ASDA and various garden centres. Disapointed we drove home, and as we did we chanched upon our local McColl's ... ...in hand. Imagine the odds AGAINST finding christmas-tree lights at 9pm on Christmas even, then consider the odds of it actually happening.
However, you have to pay for this convenience slightly more than you might elsewhere. Prices are about 5% more, I've found, but at the end of the day they aim for the "Just ran out panic" sector of the market, where you'll do or pay anything. The staff are by and large friendly, and in my experience their stores ...

...this. My opinion of McColl's is just about the same as 'Alldays'.
A general store, with much the same range as Alldays. McColl's is in the process of a name change from RS McColl. They have several shops throughout Scotland, and with the name change, they are gradually refurbishing all their shops.
I suppose I should say read my op of Alldays and you'll have my op of McColl's.
Prices are on average 10-25% higher then the RRP of non-price marked ... ...hours of McColl's are shorter than that of Alldays, although there are a handful of 24 hour stores. Because there are "normal" opening hours, I see no justification for charging the prices which they do. They should at least put some of the profit into effective staff training! ...

Quick review of McColl's (Shop)
I live on the outskirts of Norwich, there is a Mc colls shop in my village, the staff are professional and courteous, the managers however are rude, I was in this shop recently and had to be served by the assistant manageress, I stood at the till for a good 30 seconds while she carried on a conversation with one of her staff, she ignored me untill she was ready to serve, her conversation was not to do with tasking her junior, it was more moaning about management. She was totally unprofessional and rude.
I will not visit this establishment again ...

McColl's have a few shops is Scotland & are usually the last place you want to buy anything from. I doubt if the staff receive any training whatsoever as they lack any basic customer facing training. You really can't blame them much, the blame is on the owners & management but some of the managers have real attitude problem. The turn around a lot of staff which reflects badly on the way management run the business. When I used to go there I would ... ...out of £5.00 but had handed them £10.00. They would make you feel that you are wrong & they are right but this happened twice with me & once with one of my friends.
The staff are often rude & have an irritating habit of speaking amongst each other & totaling ignoring the customer who wants to be served. They must be the only shop staff who can serve a customer without speaking, no 'please', no 'thank you' & definitely no 'have a nice day'. Even ...
