McVitie’s is one of the most respected manufacturers of biscuits, and make all of the nation’s favourites! From digestives, to rich tea and hob-nobs to shortbread, McVities makes them all. The also make one of my personal favourite chocolate biscuits: Penguins. These chocolate coated biscuits have been nibbled and munched for over 65 years, and still prove to be a real hit!
For anybody (and I don’t think there are many) who haven’t had the delight of tasting one of these delightful biscuits I will provide a description that will never do them justice: Penguins are a chocolate biscuit bar. They have a layer of chocolate cream sandwiched between two chocolate biscuits, covered in milk chocolate. This description is not nearly as appetising as it needs to be, as these chocolate biscuits are as good as any.
The penguin bar is found in all good supermarkets and even most convenience stores, such is the demand. They are noticeable through their distinctive red packaging, marked with the famous emperor penguin. I feel that McVitie’s struck a goldmine when associating this chocolate biscuit bar with this distinguishing bird. I work in a zoo, and have found the penguins to be hugely popular, and in recent years popularity will have increased due to films such as Happy Feet and March of the Penguins, and even the popular children’s TV programme Pingu. For these reasons, adults and children alike find that these biscuit bars have a charm that is irresistible.
Further notable about the packaging of a penguin bar is the ever-present joke or funny fact. Contrary to what you may expect, these jokes and facts are not always about penguins and usually appear to be out of place on the wrapper of a penguin bar. Despite the fact that these jokes never make your sides split, there is something special and nostalgic about reading the beginning of a penguin joke and then pealing back the wrapping to find the punch-line. It seems strange saying it, but these quirky jokes on penguin wrappers can lead to all sorts of conversation, joke sharing and can spark social situations!!
Now to the taste. When you bite into a penguin, you get everything you need from a chocolate biscuit bar: a crunchy biscuit, just the right amount of smooth milk chocolate and a delightfully soft, creamy centre. I can’t think of many people who don’t enjoy a bit of chocolate, and this is one of my favourite ways of indulging.
Penguins are also available in two other varieties. These are mint and a orange. Although I prefer the taste of the original penguin, to add a bit of variety these other flavours are very satisfactory. The BEST way to EAT a PENGUIN bar:
Despite the delicious taste of a penguin as it comes, for me there is only one real way to fully enjoy a penguin to its full potential. This method is known as ‘The Penguin Straw’. I’m not sure how well known this is, if it is a local delicacy, restricted to students or if everyone does it. Nevertheless, I will now share it with you.
Step one: Take not of the picture of the penguin on front of the wrapper, see what its doing, saying or holding. Then (obviously) read the joke!! Step two: Carefully unwrap the bar, being careful not to break it. Step three. Bite off opposite corners of the penguin bar (one at each end). Step four: Dip one end of the biscuit bar into a hot drink, preferably tea or hot chocolate, and then suck some of the liquid up through the penguin. Only do this for a few seconds, or you will loose your penguin to the bottom of your mug!! Step five: Remove the penguin, and quickly enjoy the soft, warm, melted chocolaty experience of a penguin straw!!The price of penguins is very reasonable. When you compare the prices of other leading brands, they are very similar. Recently a pack of nine has been priced at ninety-nine pence. That’s just eleven pence a bar. Also, as with most things, if you buy a larger quantity, you save a little more money.
Unfortunately, penguin bars aren’t all that good for you, but can be enjoyed as part of a healthy diet! So here’s the nutritional information per 25g bar:
All of this information is clearly displayed on the wrappers, and that can only be a good thing!
In conclusion, I clearly love these biscuits!! Even I, a poor student can spare the 99p to purchase a pack of penguins every now and then, and its not 99p down the drain either!! A tasty snack, a naughty treat, a good size and kids and grown ups love them! Fits nicely into a lunch box (next to sandwiches on wholemeal bread, fruit and other super healthy foods).
Advantages: Lots of Chocolate, good snack size, tasty Disadvantages: Takes too long to get in to the wrapper
P-p-people have been p-p-picking up Penguins since 1932 and Briton's p-p-peck their way through 430 million of them every year.
I know this because my carer tells me it says so on the packet; she's also getting excited about the wrapping. I didn't know it, because I am blind, but I've just learned that there is a huge, smiley penguin on the outer package. She thinks he's so happy that there are 9 Penguins inside for 89p.
I am the chief taster, ... ...think about them, and then she'll fill you in on what the packet says. That's the plan, anyway.
The chocolate is of course what I really like about them. Over the years I haven't really noted that they've changed much, but then I'm a true fan, I've always liked the taste.
You can talk about a `chocolate fix' and all that but these are more a chocolate ``experience''.... I experience more than a couple in a day, I am guilty of glutony and I'm proud ...

Advantages: Thick chocolatey taste, delicious! Disadvantages: None that I can think of!
I am going to have a lot of fun writing this opinion because I have a whole packet of penguins to eat – well I have to make sure my opinion is accurate!
For as long as I can remember I have loved McVitie’s Penguins. They are a chocolate bar suitable for any occasion – packed lunches, something to keep you going until lunchtime at work, accompanying a nice cup of coffee or just a general snack for when that chocolate craving comes out!
I have always ... ...is in plentiful supply and has that perfect mixture of biscuit, smushy chocolate and chocolate on its own!
The outer packaging is red with a yellow logo saying penguin on it. The red is a bright, noticeable red so that if you were specifically looking for them in a supermarket they would be easy to find. The logo clearly says ‘penguin’ so there is no excuse to buy anything else! The inner packaging is clear cellophane that holds the individual penguin ...

Advantages: Retro yumminess! Disadvantages: Size matters in this case.
I have no self control when it comes to chocolate. None. A packet of penguins lasts very little time in my house and if I had to criticise them in any way, I'd say they were too small. The Penguins on the wrappers used to wear suits or at least bow ties, but these days they are naked - perhaps taking marketing tips from Holly Valance - maybe we can look forward to some shock tactics, gay penguins or something. Over 65 years old, they've obviously ... ...know what a penguin tastes like, it's two layers of very dense but thin chocolate biscuit with a layer of chocolate cream in between and an outer coating of slightly rippled chocolate. There is considerably less chocolate cream than there was in my opinion. I have scientifically tested this, it used to cover the feet of a Lego man when I was 4 and it no longer does. (For the record, I used an old-skool Lego man, so this isn't a new model with smaller ...

Advantages: Melt in the mouth; crisp; nice packaging Disadvantages: A tad boring. Buy some Burbons and dip them in quality chocolate
P-P-P-Pick up a Penguin. No not literally. These is the famous catch phrase for Mcvities Penguin chocolate biscuit bar which Mcvities claims is Britain's favourite sandwich biscuit bar. Oh arr! (or are they just making that up?). To be honest, this is much to gloat about seeing as ther e actualyl aren't that many sandwich biscuits bar on the market anyway. You've got the classic Burbon; Cadbury Snack sandwich; TIM TAMS, Oreo, er. I'm struggling now. ... ...to biscuit bars.
Back to the product/ product related stuff. Penguins come in several flavours (I'm still talking about the biscuit here! Thoguh I've never tried eating a penguin; they could have different flavours for all I know). Call it a shocker but I've never tried the other falvours of Penguin bars which are Mint and orange. I will hazard a guess that the mint ones are going to taste like Viscount mint biscuits and the Orange ones like Viscount ...

Advantages: Yummy, yummy in my tummy Disadvantages: A total myth that they better for you
it’s hard. I have to wean myself of the crisps, chocolate and peanut butter sandwiches; cold turkey is just too hard.
So I’ve been out and bought lots of, sort of, healthy munchies that I can have while he’s stuffing his face with magdalena cakes and penguinbars. Among my stash is the McVities Go Ahead caramel crunch bar.
In a distinctive, yet boring, bright green wrapper, it’s about three inches long and one inch wide, which isn’t very impressive in any context. I often feel that these low fat, low cal snacks are only so because they’re smaller.
It’s a short cake biscuit (hmmmmm) with a layer of caramel on top (hmmmmm) wrapped in chocolate (ohhhhhh). It’s very much like a caramel rocky bar if you’ve ever had one of them (but with less chocolate)
Best eaten straight from ...
