My sweet tooth is the bane of my dieting life. I can be really good for weeks and weeks, but if I try to deny my cravings for biscuits and chocolate I am destined to eventually fall off the wagon. Bearing this in mind, I decided to stock up in advance on lower fat biscuits before embarking on my most recent attempt to resemble Kate Moss, or at least a healthy human being without the five bellies that I seem to have gained since getting pregnant.
My eye was caught whilst browsing the aisles in Asda by the green 'Go Ahead!' logo. I vaguely remembered this brand to be one that provided lower calorie snacks, so I wobbled up to the shelf and carefully examined the choices available to me.
For those interested, here is some info on the Go Ahead! brand name. Successfully launched in 1996 and then re-launched with a new image, new products and new advertising again in 2004 to boost flagging sales, the Go Ahead! range is McVities market leading low-fat biscuits and cakes brand.

You can get the crispy slices in three flavours - the one that I am reviewing, forest fruits, apple and strawberry, and orange and sultana.
Once you get past the bright orange outer packaging you will find five packs of three biscuits, each wrapped separately. It is clearly marked on both inner and outer packaging that each slice contains 1.3g of fat and 58 calories, so that is a total of 3.9g of fat and 174 calories for each pack of three.
The biscuits themselves are described as being 'sultanas and ripe berry filling in light crispy biscuit'. They are a very thin, golden brown biscuit with visible sultanas in the middle and a light coating of sugar on top. They measure about five by two centimetres.
There is a warning on the pack that they contain milk, gluten and are produced on a line handling nuts and sesame seeds. This product is suitable for vegetarians.
-- PRICE --
They cost £0.95 at Asda for each flavour. This works out at nineteen pence per snack, which when compared with the average price of an individual snack like Weightwatchers cookies or cereal bars is pretty standard.
-- PACKAGING --
You'll find the forest fruits flavour in the bright orange packaging, with the aforementioned green Go Ahead! logo on the front. The nutritional information is pretty comprehensive, but there is also a useful bit on the front that lets you know the fat and calorific content if you don't want to search for it. The use by date is easy to find and, with a quick check on the calendar, I noticed that you get a good six months in which to use them up (ha ha ha, as if they'll last anywhere near that long).
-- WHAT I THOUGHT --
I like the fact that these biscuits are sealed in packs of three as it means no soggy biscuits should I forget these are in the cupboard after opening them - although there is not much chance of that! It is a bit naughty when it comes to the environment though, where the less plastic used the better really. My convenience head wins out over my environmentalist head this time though and I view this as a positive point.
On opening the pack of three, my nostrils are detect a warm wheaty smell which goes well with the tart smell of red berries. I find it reminds me of a Nutri-Grain, as the aroma is very similar. Definitely looking forward to eating this…
The appearance of the bar is not too bad. It looks a bit thin and insubstantial to me, but that might just be because I am a greedy cow! Someone mentioned to me that they look a bit pale and boring, but my pack contains three golden brown slices filled with a plethora of sultanas. I can't see anything that might resemble a ripe berry though, so lift the top layer of biscuit to see if they are hidden within - it seems that the berries are not whole, but are more of a jammy substance that hold the top and bottom layer of biscuit together.
The texture is really quite strange. You get the crisp, crunchiness of the biscuit paired with the stretchy, chewiness of the sultanas and finished off with the sticky jammy substance. When you chew it all up in your mouth it really is quite pleasant, although it does work your jaw a bit - I guess all that chewing could count towards my daily exercise quota.
The taste is moreish. The wheaty biscuits remind me of Rich Tea biscuits, the sugar topping keeps it from being too bland and as you chew and the biscuits melt in your mouth the fruity flavour of the berries and sultanas come through. It certainly doesn't taste like a low-fat product.
-- CONCLUSION --
This snack contains less of the bad stuff than a packet of crisps (average of 220 calories), a bar of chocolate (average of 225 calories) or a jammy doughnut (average of 250 calories), and whilst it doesn't excite me nearly half as much as any of those last three food items, these crispy slices are surprisingly yummy. They don't look very substantial, but I found my sweet tooth satisfied after eating all three… they certainly filled a hole!
I will give them four out of five - a healthier choice of snack (although not as healthy as a piece of fruit).
Advantages: Low fat chewy crispy biscuits. Disadvantages: Quite high in sugar.
Go Ahead Apple & Sultana Crispy Slices
*******************************
What are they?
****************
A light crispy biscuit filled with soft dried fruit. The pack we have now is the apple and sultana ones.
What are they for?
*******************
I think in general they're classed as a snack - something for the lunch box, elevenses and mid night feasts....? My brother seems to like them for breakfast; I just eat them whatever the time!
Do ... ...& sultana ones(!) - the fruity taste is quite subtle though not bland. Sometimes I find them a bit dry though - they also do exactly the same biscuits with a yoghurt layer covering which compensates for this and they are yummy! On some days I actually find this a little too sweet - the biscuits are also covered with a layer of sugar, so with the combination of the fruity filling - there is quite a bit of sugar with these.
These biscuits are also ...

Finding snacks that aren't full of all the bad things that taste fantastic isn't an easy job. I've bought Go Ahead Crispy slices for my daughter in the past and always looked at them thinking they looked really bland and dry, but not actually tasted them.
In my mission now to start eating a bit better after giving birth, I decided to try these slices as I had recently tried the mini version and found them quite tasty.
Available in three flavours, ... ...sultana, and forest fruit flavour. As a family we all like both the apple and orange ones, but haven't ventured onto the forest fruit yet.
They are described on the packet as “apple and sultana filling in a light crispy biscuit” (change the fruit to suit whichever obviously).
I would describe them as a thin, dry looking biscuit with a minuscule amount of squashed up filling. Don't let that put you off however.
My packet contains five individually ...

...snacks, so when I spotted McVities Go Ahead crispy slices on offer in Asda I decided to give them a try. McVities Go Ahead is a range of low fat, low calories biscuits. There are several varieties in the Go Ahead range including yoghurt-topped bars and various fruit slices. I love garibaldi biscuits and thought the crispy slices looked very similar, hence my choice.
The packaging is bright and cheerful and announces that this is a low fat snack ... ...can indulge without guilt! The crispy slices come in two flavours either orange and sultana or apple and sultana; I opted for the orange version. I was impressed on opening the box to see that the biscuits are individually wrapped in 5 packs, each pack containing 3 slices. As I wanted to take these on a winter picnic I thought this would keep the biscuits fresh. It also means I could pack just 1 pack for myself, avoiding temptation!
Each slice is ...

...whole packet at once.
McVities are the brand that make these crispy slices and there is a web site you can look at if your trying to eat healthy, check out www.123healthybalance.com for some good tips about healthy eating.
They have a care line if you have any questions too, which is always handy to know that you can ring 0500 011710 if you have any queries or problems with the products.
So far I have had no complains about any of the products ... ...I would caution about is that they could contain traces of nuts, as it says they are mad eon a line handling nuts and sesame seeds, so if you have a nut allergy you may miss these out.
They are good for the kids too, as instead of packing an unhealthy bag of crisps into your Childs lunch box you could pop one if these pack of three little bars instead, I'm sure they'd love the change.
I hope you've enjoyed the review, now I'm going g to go and ...
