Whenever I go on a diet, I always go shopping and fill my trolley with low calorie goodies which won’t tempt me to cheat and buy a king-sizebar of Cadbury’sFruit and Nut. On my last diet led shopping excursion about three months ago, I spied upon a box of McVitie’s Go Ahead Yogurt breaks. In my trolley they went and I have been buying them ever since.
The diet has long gone, not because I reached my target weight, but because I got totally and utterly bored of munching on salads, jacket potatoes and disgusting and tasteless ‘Be good to yourself-too good to be true-eat smart-low calorie-weight watchers-syns type cack! I’m sorry, but life is too short to be worrying about a few extra pounds in all the wrong places. I am happy with my weight and love eating carbs, cakes, chocolate and chips – all at the same time!
Despite my
protestations, one leftover from the mountains of diet food I bought has been these yogurt breaks, and this is because they taste so nice. Unfortunately my partner has now caught the low cal bug - unfortunately because now there are no spontaneous trips to McDonalds at 7o’clock at night for a McFlurry – and he has taken a liking to these biscuits. I am in two minds about his new found discovery. I’m pleased that he has found a low fat/low calorie biscuit to fill his chocolate free days, but I’m also a bit annoyed as we are constantly battling over who has the last one!
McVities Go ahead range has been around for a few years now and in my mind have been a bit hit and miss. They make such delights as the Strawberry Mallow cakes and Fruit and Nut crisp which are okay but not as nice as their calorie laden counterparts. They are okay if you are on a diet, but are totally boring if you are not. This is where I think the yogurt breaks differ.
If you like Garibaldi biscuits otherwise known as crushed fly biscuits continue reading. If you hate them, shut the door on your way out. Because you ‘ain’t gonna like what you hear!
What are they? ^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*
McVities describe their Yogurt Breaks as ‘delicious yogurt flavour topping on a light crisp biscuit with a sultana and berry filling’. This is a pretty adequate description I think. They come in a box of 6 and each packet contains two biscuits. Great for sharing – I don’t think!
They come in two flavours: original and forest fruit. I have tried both and like the FF one the best. The FF biscuits come in an attractive pink/cerise coloured box with a photograph of the biscuit emblazoned on the front, with a scattering of berries such as blackberries, raspberries and redcurrants.
Each biscuit comes in an individual foil wrapped packet – it’s for freshness you know.
What calories do they contain? ^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*
For those health conscious amongst us the calorie count comes in at 68kcal per slice and 2.0g of fat per slice. Quite impressive really and no guilt when scoffing two packs in one sitting – they are low calorie after all. To quote Marjory Dawes from Little Britain: “They are half the calories, so you can have double the amount!”
What do they look like? ^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^**^
Each biscuit is rectangle and about 6-7cm long. The biscuits are covered with a creamy coating which is the yogurt in question. The underside is plain and looks like a Garibaldi complete with crushed flies (in case you had any doubts, the flies are sultanas/raisins). The smell when you open the packet is quite strong, it has a synethetic strawberry aroma to it, which is not pleasant, but not vomit inducing either. In fact I never really noticed the smell before, until I opened a pack and smelt it for this review. Should have left the smell-o-vision alone as it isn’t a disadvantage at all.
Once you have bitten into the biscuit the contents are evident, you can see berries and sultanas mixed in with the biscuit base. The sultanas are soft and quite chewy, as they should be.
What does it taste like? ^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^
The biscuits remind me so much of Garibaldi biscuits which I used to love as a child. I still like them but never buy them any more, this is mainly because I tend to choose chocolate covered biscuits. Naughty me!
They are very chewy and not very crumbly, which is good for your floors. When you bite into them you can taste the yogurt straight away, it’s creamy, soft and not too overpowering. I think this is because the underside is not yogurt coated, if it was, I think the whole taste of the biscuit would be a bit overwhelming to the palate. The yogurt taste is very similar to those yogurt covered raisins you can buy in health food shops. I used to love them as a child as well, so perhaps this whole biscuit is just a great big memory kick for me. Who knows?
My opinion ^*^*^*^*^*^*
I really like these biscuits and buy them on a regular basis, they taste lovely with a cup of tea, but I wouldn’t recommend them for dunking. The only disadvantage that I can think of is the huge list of ingredients each packet contains – over 50 different ingredients. This suggests to me that this product isn’t as natural as it appears on first inspection. But then again, what is these days? You can almost guarantee that if it tastes nice, it’s bad for you.
This product contains milk and may contain traces of sesame.
Other information ^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*
I bought my breaks for Ł1.09 for a box of 6. They are available in large supermarkets, such as Tesco’s and Sainsbury’s.

Never tried anything from the Go Ahead range but I can sympathise with your partner eating them before you can. So, a little advice, hide a few away and then you'll alwyas have a supply. Yes it's devious and greedy but it works everytime.

Sounds yum, but that might just be because I'm hungry! I'll give them a try sometime. Rob
