The Product....
Go Ahead Yoghurt Breaks are a relatively new healthy snack from McVities. The brand itself suggests quality - we all know how delicious Mcvities digestive biscuits are after all. But what makes these so different to any other cereal/healthbar? Hopefully, this will be obvious by the time you have finished reading this. I definitely recommend them, anyway. Rest assured that if you are looking for a slightly different snack besides Nutri-Grain bars or Special K bars, you have found it by picking up this snack.
Who invented this wonderful snack...
McVities first became popular in 1839 when Alexander Grant came up with the infamous digestive biscuit. From there, the
chocolate digestive was created in 1925, HobNobs in 1985 and Milk Chocolate HobNobs in 1987. Since then, the list of McVities products has become enormous - they even started a Go Ahead range to appeal to dieters all over. At the moment, an average of 52 digestive biscuits are eaten in the UK per second. Can you imagine eating 52 biscuits in an hour, never mind a second?! Oh well, there are a lot of people in the UK I suppose! McVities are a member of United Biscuits so if you ever want to discover the diversity of McVities, check out the united biscuits websites.
What they taste like...
I am going to describe the taste of the strawberry variety as that is the only type I have tasted yet. I am sure the forest fruits and plain ones are just as nice but unfortunately the vending machine I got mine from only had strawberry so tough if you don't like it! When I bit into the bar, the first thing I noticed was the strong taste of strawberries and cream - I think the cream taste was coming from the yoghurt on top. Then I realised that it was actually really crunchy and biscuity instead of the falling apart wheat texture typical of cereal bars. I also discovered that there were small sultanas throughout the biscuit. The strawberry taste at this point was really strong and tangy. You would think that the biscuit had a lot of strawberry flavouring inside it but after deconstructing it carefully, I could see no evidence of this so I can only assume that it cam from the yoghurt flavouring on top. The biscuit was really tangy and a lot tastier than any other health bar I have tasted recently. My overall first impression of the biscuit was that it was simply scrumptious - to be absolutely snobbish in my language choice but I thought that was better than "yummy".
The Packaging...
The first thing I noticed when I picked this out of the vending machine slot was that it had a lovely picture of some strawberries and the bar itself. It looked great even on plastic, never mind when I opened it up. On the pack we are told that the product has been designed for people who are watching their weight so that you know that no matter how surprisingly delicious it is, it is still good for you and will not have to be eaten a crumb a day to fit into your diet.
Nutritional Information
The packet I bought contained two slices - something I was really happy about since swimming does tend to make me hungry - so remember that the information below should be doubled if you are watching what you are eating:
Each slice contains: 303kj/72kcal of energy 1.1g of protein 12.4g of carbohydrate - 7.1g of which is sugars 2g of Fat 1.2g of which are saturates 0.4g of fibre 0.1g of sodium (salt, in case you were wondering!) You are also told that the product is free from "TRANS FATS". Not sure what they are but if you know what they are, please let me in on the secret!
If you are allergic to milk, soya or gluten then this is a no-no for you - sorry! It also appears to contain wheat, although I am surprised that wasn't listed on the allergies part. The only other thing you are told is that it was produced in a place where nuts and sesame seeds were also used so you may want to be careful about that. The product also clearly states that it is suitable for vegetarians - not that that affects me, I unfortunately cna't live without meat so I have to deal with the guilt!
There, I think I have mentioned all of the precautions to be taken before eating this bar - who would have thought there were precautions!? If any of you ignore them and get ill, you can't blame me!
My Opinion
As I said before, I first tasted this product after being swimming and starving. I ate it while waiting for my Mum to pick me up outside the sports centre. When I got into the car beside her, the first thing she said was "What have you been eating?" because the strawberry smell was just so strong and unmistakable. I am really quite surprised to have found a healthy snack which has a good flavour to it as opposed to just bland. I was also surprised at how satisfying these were while also being light at the same time. Overall, I obviously approve of this product and would recommend it to anybody.

These sound nice, I have just reviewed the forest fruit ones that don't have yoghurt on them and they were yummy too... I should imagine they'll be even nicer with the yogurt. Good review! Kat x
