Ginger nuts! No I am not trying to offend those with red hair, the Ginger nuts I refer to are the delicious ones made by McVities. I say made by McVities because although there are countless other versions available the only true Ginger nut for me is the McVities version.
For anyone unaware of exactly what a Ginger nut is it is a round biscuit of a little under 2 inches in diameter which amongst tons of other worrying ingredients contains ... ...it a wonderful stand out taste in the biscuit market.
Each biscuit is a reddish gingery colour and has a distinct cracking pattern on top, although the biscuits look and feel very light and airy they give terrific crunch but are also sadly very bad for you. As well as the crushed ginger they also contain sugar, syrup and salt in fairly large quantities and each biscuit has a whopping 53 calories contained in it.
Ginger nuts! No I am not trying to offend those with red hair, the Ginger nuts I refer to are the delicious ones made by McVities. I say made by McVities because although there are countless other versions available the only true Ginger nut for me is the McVities version.
For anyone unaware of exactly what a Ginger nut is it is a round biscuit of a little under 2 inches in diameter which amongst tons of other worrying ingredients contains a small amount of ground ginger, just enough to give it a wonderful stand out taste in the biscuit market.
If you have not been put off by the mention of them being bad for you then grab yourself a packet because they are delicious. As you will find on opening (if you can get them open, the packets are a night mare) you will be greeted by a lovely gingery aroma which is indicative of the lovely taste awaiting you.
If eaten straight from the packet the biscuit will first crunch then crumble into a buttery sweet gingery mouthful of loveliness. The reason I mention straight from the pack is because I tend to dunk these either in tea or in a cold glass of milk.
The McVities Ginger nut is becoming a rare sight in some stores, for example I was unable to purchase a packet in either Sainsbury or Asda the other day being informed that they stock a brand known as Elkes but no longer the McVities version. For fear I may not get my Ginger nuts I bought a packet of these Elkes biscuits but although they were decent they were not near the standards of the mighty McVities so it was off out to my local Co-op who came good with plenty in stock.
The McVities brand of Ginger nut is easily spotted with its gingery dark orange wrapper and the brand name of McVities in white on a dark blue background. The packet also has a picture of a lone Ginger nut letting you know what's inside waiting for you. I know many people class the Ginger nut as a plain biscuit, plain because it has no cream, jam or chocolate I guess but to me there is nothing plain about them, they are an exceptional biscuit and one of my personal favourites.
So finally I will say to you that this is a biscuit you should try but also you should try not to eat to many once you come to love them because they are very bad for you in large amounts.
Advantages: Dunkability Disadvantages: Not a great taste sensation
I have sat before me a packet of McVities Ginger nuts. I must admit they were an impulse buy this lunchtime at ASDA where they cost me a grand total of 69p. or those of you who can't tell biscuits apart on the shelves you are looking for a predominantly orange and blue packet with the McVities logo on it. Of course another identifying factor is that the pack is marked 'Ginger Nuts' with the strap line of 'Now even more gingery' above it. Further ... ...than previously and contain no artificial flavours or colours - Ace! After further investigation, the lower in salt claim actually manifests itself in a reduction by 0.06g/100g since 2004, not exactly groundbreaking stuff there.
All of the important nutritional information is on the side of the pack and these delightful little munchables have a staggering 53 kcal per biscuit, that's over ˝ a bag of 'French Fries' crisps! Fat levels are a mahoosive ...

McVities are one of the better known biscuit brands and as such you can usually reply on a certain quality in their products. McVities Ginger Nuts are no exception. Available in large 300g packets these biscuits are in brilliant bright orange coloured plastic packaging and really are eye catching. The usual McVities blue logo is first and foremost at the front of the packet, but then we see a nice picture of the biscuits contained within. At around ... ...expensive Ginger biscuits, but then the McVities brand is a lot more than supermarket own brands. These are available at all the usual biscuit buying shops. Now I am a fan of ginger biscuits and always have been, but needless to say, if you do not like ginger, then you will not like these. There is nothing overly special about then to sway non ginger biscuit eaters to give these a dunk but for anyone who likes them, they are certainly a decent snack. ...

Dunkin' donuts! don't make me laugh,
Dunkin' donuts will make you barf,
If you wan't to dunk something in your tea,
It has to be Ginger nuts for me.
McVities make these best I think,
Sweet and crunchy to dunk in my drink,
Available to buy in most grocer shops,
I get my wife to buy lots and lots.
They come in a packet (there's a surprise!)
The most common packet is the 300g size,
Ingredients include sugar, ginger and wheat,
Making a buscuit ... ...worry or fret,
No animal bits have been found yet,
These biccies are fine for all to eat,
Unless your allergic to ginger or wheat!
The funny thing is, about a ginger nut biccy, Is that no nuts are used to make you feel sicky,
I really believe all nuts should be banned,
They make most things taste awful and bland.
Each biscuit contains 2.0 grammes of fat,
and 56 calories, imagine that!
Not a treat if your watching your weight,
But for me, ...

Mcvites Ginger nuts are a regular on my weekly shopping list. I have tried other brands but I always go back to McVites as I think they stand head and shoulders above any competitors. Ginger of course has a variety of uses. It is a tropical plant grown in India, China and Jamaica. and apart from using it in cooking savoury dishes, there are many old wives’ tales of using it in tea as a remedy for colds or drinking ginger ale/beer for an upset stomach. ... ...the supermarket shelf in a bright orange tubular packet. They are foil wrapped for freshness and 300g packet costs 70p - 75p, but they are usually on offer at some point in each supermarket. The packet is opened by just pulling apart the wrapper at one end. Not like some brands that have a tag you can pull to open all round the biscuits. This makes them easy to seal and keep fresh. However, I would recommend that once opened they are stored in an ...

Advantages: taste of ginger, crunchy Disadvantages: hard to initially bite into, funny aftertaste
49p in my pocket and standing in the biscuit section at Sainsburys. I could of bought 2 packets of Sainsburys own brand of ginger nuts for 23p but instead I opted for McVities. For 47p and a smaller amount of biscuits I should maybe of gone for the cheaper variety but hey, I felt like going a bit up market (!) There can't be many people who haven't heard of the ginger nut. It's basically a golden brown biscuit which is slightly thicker in height ... ...biscuits. In most cases they should have a strong taste of ginger but not so that you want to spit it out afterwards. I'm actually pleased to say that McVities have managed this combination well. Spicey yet not too overpowering. They are also very hard to break into. Somehow I worry that I'm going to break my teeth eating one of these. I tend to crunch on them using my side teeth if that makes sense. Once you've actually gotten the first bite out ...
