...Background
I'm sure most people have heard of this author Ian Rankin through the Rebus books and television series. This was however my first experience of his work.
About the Author
Ian Rankin was born in Fife, Scotland in 1960. He is the UK's Number 1 selling crime author. So far he has written 27 novels, of which his most successful have been the Rebus books. His first novel was indeed 'The Flood', which originally was planned for Radio 4's Short story section but was considered too long so Rankin converted it into a novel instead.
He has received many awards for his work including an OBE in 2002 for his services to literature.
The Storyline of the book
The book is set in a small Scottish town called Carsden. Whose traditional industry of coal mining was closing down due to it being uneconomic to mine there any...

...of the two central characters and almost immediately you can't help but feel an affinity with them. What I loved most about the book is how the author managed to potray a range of emotions from one page to next. There were times reading the book when I was almost crying and others when I was actually laughing out loud. Mostly when batman was involved (you'll see what I mean)
So If you're looking for a real page turner that will keep you guessing this book will most probably appeal to you, as well as this you've also got very real characters and an enthralling story.
I wasn't familiar with Chris Cleave's work but I am now planning to read his other books and if they're anywhere as near as good as this one they will be a pleasure to read....

Advantages: Easy - good holiday read, need another book though! Disadvantages: Too quick, finished before you know it
...For anybody who doesn't know who Chris Moyles is, he is the Breakfast show DJ on Radio 1. Chris presents the show along with his sidekick Comedy Dave and his 'team'. They include Dominic Byrne (Newsreader), Carrie (Sports), Rachel (Producer) and Aled. Not sure exactly what Aleds role is other than covering for Rachel and being the object of Chris's ridicule on a daily basis. Chris is not everybodys cup of tea and is the self confessed 'saviour of Radio 1'.
I personally like Chris Moyles. I first heard him when he was on in the evenings. As his popularity grew he got more prime time spots such as Saturday mornings and eventually the breakfast show. I find that Chris cheers me up in a morning. I listen to his show on the way to work and I don't think a record gets played for the first half hour.
I asked for this book as a Christmas...
