Measure for Measure could perhaps best be described as a problem play. Indeed, many critics have seen it as such, and for this reason, it remains one of Shakespeare's relatively obscure works to those outside of literary circles.

Measure for Measure is a tale of contrasts, exploring the differences between disguise and reality, justice and mercy, morality and normality amongst other themes. The text, as is typical of the works of Shakespeare, is far from straightforward and it is useful to use some form of companion in order to comprehend the full meaning, particularly if one is not well aquainted with Shakespearean language. A basic but worthwhile guide, particularly in terms of study would be York Notes, whilst any kind of dramatic or film interpretation of the play would make a worthwhile extra in order to facilitate a fuller understanding.

The play itself is often described as an attempt by the bard to flatter the new King, James I, and if you are keen on historical contexts, this is something worth looking into. From a purely literary standpoint, it can be said that Measure for Measure makes a not so subtle use of the morality style of play, with certain characters such as Angelo or Isabella giving us specific insight into how society should or could function. This however, is combined with some success with the traditional Elizabethean/Jacobean genres of both comedy and tradgedy in order to create a truly unique blend of play.

From the point of view of the general reader, Measure for Measure incorporates many interesting comments on contemporary society, general human nature and other diverse areas whilst not sacrificing interest in terms of dramatic tension and key moments of action. On its own, it should be remembered that Measure for Measure is, first and foremost, a play. Therefore, on buying this product, the reader should first be sure that they can cope with such a play that may, in this format, appear dry and lacking in life. Bearing this in mind, however, the serious reader will gain great enjoyment from the play.

If there is one final thought to take away from this play, it is the fantastic motivational comment made by Lucio "Our doubts are traitors, and make us lose the good we oft might win, by fearing to attempt."

I did this at school and the whole class loved it. I think they should chose this over other Shakespeare's.
