been confined to the PSone; but withMOH Allied Assaultallowing the bestselling franchise to make it onto the PC earlier this year, the Mac version was not far behind. The first thing you'll notice is that the format is relatively unchanged. The OSS bunker is there in all its glory, as are thePathe News-esque briefings and the fantastically atmospheric music and ambient sound. But although the format is cosy and familiar forMedalheads, there are some great new features. Firstly although it's not squad-based, in several of the missions you will gain comrades in arms; you can't control them, but the speed of your actions will decide whether they live or die. Secondly the medal system has changed. Whereas the original was pretty formulaic--clear the level with over 75 per cent health and killing all enemies--in Allied Assault there are "secret missions". You don't have to complete these "secret missions" to clear the level, but if you do perform above and beyond the call of duty, by rescuing a POW or risking life and limb to acquire a manifest, for example, you are rewarded accordingly.Graphically it's a bit disappointing. Some of the hedgerows in the bocage level are rather pixelated, but what it lacks in looks it makes up for in atmosphere. The fantastic (Indiana Jones-alike) music is back and the sound is literally stunning as bullets, explosions and shrapnel rain about you. But what really raisesMOH Allied AssaultaboveWolfenstein, is the Omaha Beach level. This is possibly the most intense war-gaming experience ever on any format. Around you people are crying, praying, dying and you have to run up a beach to the shingle dodging a hail of machine-gun bullets. It's insanely difficult to make it, even on easy level, but you will be gripped by the sheer full-on intensity of the experience; so much so that the next time you seeSaving Private Ryanyou'll nod sadly remembering that you were there.--Kristen Bowditch

A very welcome expansion pack to an already classic game,Medal of Honor Allied Assault: ... more
Spearheadmixes in additional single and multiplayer challenges. The first person action kicks off with D-Day, and the same kind of measured, yet frantic, gameplay that earned the game an add-on in the first place, is present and correct.Kicking off with the playing parachuting through a hail of bullets,Spearhead'smissions bother little with plot, instead opting for more of the same. Thus, there's first-person action, tank driving and simple issues, such as survival, to consider once more.In the enhancements column, you certainly feel more part of a squad this time around, with colleagues ready to stand alongside you in battle. Leaning is incorporated into the single player game for the first time, which helps combat the previously overbalanced snipers. Little tweaks here and there tighten things up too, and there's a few more weapons thrown in too. Pretty much what you'd expect from an add-on pack.On the multiplayer side, a dozen new maps are included, and this, as last time, range from tight, tense levels to more open battles. They seem slightly larger than before too, and as with the single player levels, they're enjoyable, challenging, and won't disappoint. What will is the length of the single-player mission, which is notably shorter than previously. What's there is very good; there's simply not enough of it.Nonetheless, with the various tweaks taken into account,Spearheadundoubtedly improves and prolongs the original, and boasts the same high production values. It's a pack that noAllied Assaultfan can really be without. --Simon Brew

was perhaps inevitable that another would be along soon after. It's arrived in the form ofBreakthrough, which adds plenty to one of the PC's favourite first-person shooters. The pack moves the action to North Africa and Italy, across 11 new single-player and nine multi-player levels. As before, these environments are realised well, and make differing demands on the player. Plenty of additional weaponry certainly helps in that department. The single-player missions are a bit of a mixed bag, with some standout campaigns set beside a few that are a little more run-of-the-mill. Yet they'll still be happily lapped up by anyone who's worked their way through what's gone before, and the good news is thatBreakthroughwill last you a good bit longer than the previous expansion pack. Don't expect anything that breaks the mould, though. On the multi-player side, the best addition is the new liberation mode. The idea is that you must rescue players as part of the ongoing battle, and it's really good fun to play.Breakthroughis a good and welcome expansion to a game that's still an office favourite. It's got a few niggles, but it genuinely expands upon the original game and delivers a healthy dose of added entertainment forAllied Assault's many fans. --Simon Brew

I am of course talking about the Omaha beach level and its subsequent trek through the french countryside a'la saving private ryan.
Back to the beginning though, as all good games should this one starts with a bang. Undercover in the back of a truck on the way to rescue some captured guy ( plot, who needs it ) you are attacked by a herd of germans and subsequently must shoot your way through a town where you will encounter, ambushes, germans with guns and lots more germans with guns. This is merely a taster of things to come.
Now i have played a large portion of first person shooters, from the original Wolfenstein 3d to Doom to Half Life to the mainly fantastic Serious Sam but atmosphere is cranked up to an excrutiating level at some points in this game. Whether in snowy lands infiltrating enemy bases or storming beaches ( god i love that bit, more later ) and when trapped in a house with two comrades while being attacked by hoards of germans the atmosphere can be suitably exhilerating or terrifying.
Graphically MOHAA is up there with some of the best, not stunning, although some of the scenery is great, it uses the quake engine so first person freaks should be at home here. The controls are spot on ( as most first person shooters are ) and the sound is suitably authentic with the guns sounding as i imagine they really did.
Some of the time your character ( some U.S famous army guy i think ) is joined by others in missions but usually the game finds a way of either killing off your mates or separating you in some way. One thing that annoys me about this game is the way that your character always has to be the 'point' man, always leading the way into danger. It would have been nice to be one of the guys at the back, following the leader like in Operation Flashpoint. This is just a minor annoyance.
But lets cut to the best ( so far ) bit of the game, the beach. I have played this section about 6 times in a row before i carried on with the game and that includes the briefing and the intro bit. Simply because it is the greatest moment in gaming since mr mario went all 3d. from the moment the doors open on the landing craft the action just ( literally ) smacks you in the face i'm sure you will just run out into the water getting ripped apart by enemy fire countless times before you even think about a strategy to stay alive. And when you do you will be faced with gaming perfection. As you make your way up the beach you encounter some horrific sights that will keep that stress level high. My recommendation is not to save the game until you have completed this section, this gives the fear of death that little extra edge knowing that you will have to start the section again. However once the beach section is conquered you must trek into enemy territory to destroy some bad ass flak cannons and even badder rocket launchers. To do this you must pass through a small village riddled with germans, this is the ( close ) second most stressful section as you take refuge in abandoned houses with the enemy closing in.
So far this game has been a thrill a minute and i am looking forward to the next levels. I am not looking forward to finishing it though as a hole will appear in my life.
On a pentium 3 with 550 meg of ram and a decent graphics card this game runs really well. I have not played online but i am told that it is quite an experience, not as good as Wolfenstein online but pretty close. Comparisons to Half Life have been thrown around but i believe they are totally different games, yes both do rely on tension to carry the game through. Half Life though is more story based than MOHAA. I also think that MOHAA is more accesible than Half Life and also i know a few people who cant stand first person shooters who love this game. High praise indeed and if that doesn't persuade you how about this, The best pc game EVER!!!!!
UPDATE!!!!! A hole has appeared in my life. when my pc went tits up recently i had to wipe it all completely, thus losing all my gamedata. I had stupidly ( although it seemed a good idea at the time ) took the game back to the shops after installing a patch that meant i didn't need the disk ( i am sooo naughty ). Anyway i didn't get to finish the game and i can't afford it now but i guess it serves me right. ho-hum

So, Medal of Honor : Allied Assault. It's another WWII game, and heralded as the best FPS (first person shooter) since Half Life. *For those of you not in the know, Half Life was and is regarded as a revolution in gaming. 'Half Life is the best game ever' is something you're likely to hear pretty often in gaming circles. And you won't get many disagreements. Quite a compliment to it, since its a few years old now.*
So ... ...to know that the original Medal of Honor game (for the playstation) was actually made by Spielberg's company, Dreamworks. Allied Assault draws very much on Mr. Spielberg's work, and even uses the same military advisor employed for Saving Private Ryan, to capture that 'real war' feel and imagery. "But how does it play?", I hear you ask. Let's have a look at the nuts and bolts of it all....

Medal of HonorAlliedAssault: Spearhead is the first add-on for the first PC MoH game. If you remember correctly, I didn't like AlliedAssault. Perhaps it was because of playing more recent games like Doom 3, Painkiller, Vietcong or FEAR, perhaps it was because I'm worshipping Half-Life or perhaps because I played Call of Duty before MoHAA.
But why play Spearhead and Breakthrough, the other add-on? No, it wasn't because they were improving the multiplayer (I'm not interested in it, apart from Team Fortress 2). No, it wasn't because I hoped that they really were fixing some mistakes. Nope. I only bought MoHAA Warchest, meaning that I bought the game and its two add-ons. Until now DreamWorks' acclaimed WW2 first-person shooter series Medal of Honor has been confined to the PSone, but with MOH Allied Assault the bestselling franchise makes it onto the PC. The first thing you'll notice is that the format is relatively unchanged. The OSS bunker is there in all its glory, as are the Pathe News-eque briefings and the fantastically atmospheric music and ambient sound. But although the format is cosy and familiar for Medal heads, the move to PC has brought with it some great new features. Firstly although it's not squad-based, in several of the missions you will gain comrades in arms; you can't control them, but the speed of your actions will decide whether they live or die. Secondly the medal system has changed. Mike Powell, member of the famed 1st Ranger Battalion who gets recruited by the OSS and battles through over 20 levels that are based on historical military campaigns of World War II. Set during the most trying years of the war, 1942-1945, Medal of Honor Allied Assault gives players a sense of the courage it took to survive the landings at Normandy, the assault at Arzew, a rendezvous with the Resistance outside the village of St. Lo, and the push through the heavily defended border of Germany itself to take the bridge at Remagen. Staying true to all the gameplay features that made Medal of Honor one of the most acclaimed and best-selling games launched in 1999, Medal of Honor Allied Assault will build on the success of that game and add new player weapons, new interactive Allied vehicles such as Sherman tanks and M3 Half Tracks, smarter enemy AI, and the ability to call for artillery strikes. Medal of Honor Allied Assault is headquartered in Cabinet War Rooms at Whitehall, dispatching players on numerous campaigns, each with specific objectives to meet in terms of infiltration, execution and exfiltration. Missions will be based in the deserts of North Africa, on the bloody shores of France, across the tundra of Norway, and, ultimately, over the Rhine into Nazi Germany. These missions range from silencing the gun batteries at Port Arzew, to sabotaging U-boats at the sub pens of Trondheim, surviving the landing at Omaha Beach, and finally, holding the Ludendorff Bridge at Remagen- the only battle where the Germans used their dreaded V2 rockets in a tactical capacity.
