I think it is fair to say that I was prepared and planned for Aleyna's birth. I spent the last 2 months of my pregnancy nesting, organising, obsessing, much to my husband's delight as I am normally a little slovenly!!
However nothing could have prepared us for Aleyna spending 2 weeks in intensive care.
I had already bought the Medela Electric breast pump, I knew I would be going back to work after a short time and I knew if at all possible that I wanted to breastfeed.
When my milk had still not come in 5 days after Aleyna's birth (she was on a serum drip in the incubator so no milk for her at that stage), with a little help from the midwife I decided to focus on getting my milk supply going in order to give her the best start if and when she was able to take milk. This focus kept me going but I can honestly say that the Medela electric breast pump was my saviour. I persisted and persevered (and it was very tough) but eventually after 3 days of trying, we managed to get my milk supply going enough to start bottling the first milk up to keep for Aleyna's future progress. I really don't think it would have been possible with a manual pump.
Our situation was exceptional however I continued to use the electric pump over the next months in a much more normal situation as we were all able to go home and I wanted to keep up my milk supply when I went back to work.
**The breast pump has a dial which can increase and decrease the speed and pumping action. This really helps assist the flow of milk and ensures you are not hurting yourself in the early sensitive stages.
**It is very easy to assemble/disassemble making it a treat to clean and quick to get back into operation
**The suction method is supposed to be very close to the motion of a baby and even though at first it feels very strange, after a while it is quite relaxing and none of that tiring hand pumping to hear of.
**It is a very noisy machine (really its only downfall especially if you are in the bathroom at work!!) and it is handy to be close to the electric mains just in case the battery runs out.
**At just under 43 pounds from Boots (and John Lewis I think), I personally believe that this is exceptional value for money and even in a completely normal situation, is a fantastic buy for all new mums.

I thought this was a great pump too. Much better than the manual one I used after my eldest was born.

Ah thanks, she is absolutely brilliant now (7 and a half months), really chubby and happy. I stopped feeding after about 3 months. There was so much pressure to continue but it hurt so much and I was getting myself in such a state about it. I know I gave Aleyna the best start and she is doing so well now that I have stopped myself feeling guilty (and refuse others making me feel guilty). Thanks for your comments
