An Excellent Book, Well Worth paying out for.

Advantages: A full and VERY useable book suitable for medics of all Skill Levels
Disadvantages: Requires good knowledge of medical Jargon and has limited anatomy and physiology

I bought this book in my first year of medicine, but it is suitablefor medical students at any point of their course and even for qualified GP's. This put aside it is probably not very useful for the lay person, unless accompanied by a good medical dictionary, such as one by oxford university press. The book is arranged in various colour-coded sections, each of which focus on a particular physiological system, for example there are sections focusing ...
...and so on. I find from my own experience that this book is better used as a reference point for a deeper look into a particular area you are already studying. For example, if one was studying the anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular system, it may then lead you to this book to find out more about problems associated with it, such as myocardial infarction and valvular disorders. The book also provides a series of useful tables. Often when ...

Everything you ever wanted to know

Advantages: Comprehensive, good pictures, clear writing
Disadvantages: Heavy, imtimidating, not very clinical

If you're only going to read one Pathology book then this is probably the one you should read. It's huge, detailed, heavy and probably has the answer to almost any question you (or more likely the examiner) might want to ask. Somewhere. Which is also the problem. Since it is so comprehensive there's also a lot of it. The book is split up into two main parts - the first is about the principles of disease and explains the basics of cell injury, inflammation, ...
...half takes a system based approach, describing common (and downright obscure) forms of pathology in each organ system in turn. I found I used the first half to great effect in my Pre-clinical Pathology course (Cambridge), especially the chapters on healing and cancer, whilst the second was more useful for the kinds of things on our Clinical Path course. There is a lack of clinical points though, it might be better suited to people training specifically ...

The Cheese and Onion book

Advantages: Pocket-sized, consise, covers most common conditions
Disadvantages: Easily lost as everyone has one

If you've ever been on a ward you should have seen this. This little yellow and green book is almost as much part of the Medical Student uniform as your stethoscope and white coat (and those huge disfiguring orange badges they make us wear here in Oxford...). It contains in (very large, but that's what the white coat's for) pocket sized format consise summaries of all the major conditions you're likely to encounter as a Medical student or House ...
...and risk factors for each condition as well as having useful sections on History Taking and common symptoms, how to read an ECG and Emergency Medicine to mention but a few. There's even a surgery section, though the Handbook of Clinical Specialties is better for that. While it might not help you improve your basic understanding of medicine this is an immensely helpful reference guide for when you're stuck up on the ward waiting for someone to come ...
