Advantages Advantages Offered a lot for the price at time of purchase

Disadvantages Disadvantages Didn't survive its one-year warranty period

This review is a warning to others. I'm a mature university student who travels about visiting friends and relatives so purchasing a laptop seemed the ideal solution. I could still do my rounds without feeling guilty about leaving my unfinished assignments at home. So, I took out a student loan of £500 and, after a bit of research, discovered this laptop (yes they're officially called Notebooks but lets face it, we all call them laptops) advertised on Somerfield supermarket's 'Great Deals' flyer with the claim 'too good to miss'. You may have seen them in your junk mail. Anyway this one came ... more

4 Stars Quick review of Medion MID2030 Notebook by robbish 13/05/2007
I agree with previous purchasers about the annoying intermittent loss of sound, which medion are looking into, however, the screen is ok and I do a lot of image manipulation on it through photoshop. The build is fine, it is very reliable, but it is a heavy beast and the battery last an hour if that. It is very fast for the amount of money and the only reason why people may think it is loud is because the fan kicks in regularly, this is because the pentium 4 chip is more suited to PCs and runs hotter than mobile chips, ... more

    Advantages Advantages Cheap

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Nasty

I'm going to admit it. I bought this computer from Toys 'R' Us. But I wanted a cheap fast box and I wasn't fussy about the looks. TRU had them piled high so I walked out with a box under my arm. I should really have taken it back as soon as I plugged it in. But I convinced myself that the terrible screen was really OK and I would be plugging in an external screen anyway. Then I convinced myself that the noise was OK - even if it is louder than the first PC I ever bought back in 1812 or something. I soon also discovered that the sound only worked intermittently. I work in the IT business so I ... more

Advantages Advantages Pretty stable in terms of software (except the sound drivers)

Disadvantages Disadvantages A bit too heavy and noisy, and certainly gets too hot

I have one, an Advent 7062. I've also had issues with having to frequently reinstall the sound drivers - although given that they're the AC'97 Realtek drivers, which have been reported as unstable on other laptops, it might be more of a software issue. But apart from that, and the occasional hiccup from the DVD drive which sometimes wouldn't play DVDs, it worked perfectly well from December 2004 until a few months ago, when it suddenly died on me. It's done that 4 times now - including today. 3 times it's had its motherboard replaced, and the last time I replaced the battery, which according ... more

Advantages Advantages RAM and Hard drive upgrades are relatively cheap now to upgrade and the CPU is no slow coach

Disadvantages Disadvantages Heavy and battery power not long.

I bought two of these to use as personal laptops for my wife and I back in 2006. At the time I added two MiniPCI network cards and upgraded to 500MB RAM and despite a lot of the other reviews I had absolutely no problems with either and these were used daily and traveled a lot as I work as an IT contractor. Both still work fine. If there was an issue it was the battery packs do not appear to be that long lived so running the laptop away from mains power was never a good idea but then the laptop does have a pretty heavy load. I love the fact the RAM used is desktop RAM! After having done ... more
