I first managed to catch this show on BBC2 late one evening. I had read about it in the TV guide, saying it was a new show about psychics starring the American actress Patricia Arquette. It didn't really sound like my cup of tea but there was nothing else on so I thought I would give it a go, and I am glad I did.
Medium is about, funnily enough, a Medium. The character who Patricia Arquette plays is called Allison DuBois, a lady who has dreams and visions about crimes of all sorts. She is married to Joe and they have 3 daughter Ariel, Bridgette, and Marie. Allison was training to be an attorney when she realises that she was having visions about a case she was studying, and it turned out that she was having visions about the crime and it's perpertrators.Allison's skills are realised by the District Attorney Manuel Devalos, played by the magnificent Miguel Sandoval. He decided she would be an asset to his department and he employs Allison to work in Phoenix's DA office. However, he doesn't tell other people in the office about Alison's skills.
Not only is Allison known for having dreams and visions about crimes, she is known to dream about faces, and also has visions of missing people, and often helps the DA to recover people who have been missing for long lengths of time. However, she appears to not be the only psychic in the damily. Her eldest daughter Ariel bagan having dreams about a missing girl, and Allison realised Ariel was having visions as she does. Her husband Joe seemed unhappy about Ariel having Allison's gift but she seemed proud to have passed her gift on.For me, the most fascinating thing about this show is that it is based ona real life woman. Allison DuBoit is a real person who really does have visions on crimes and helps the DA. It is fascinating that a real person can have such vivid dreams, and that she can do all this.
It is a wonderful show, perfectly acted, and the child actresses are amazing too. Series 1 has 16 episodes, Series 2 has 22, after the first series being such a hit, and Series 3 also has 22 episodes. It is expected more series will follow. Medium has received 2 Golden Globe nominations for Lead Actress for Patricia Arquette in 2006 and 2007, and she also won an Emmy award for her performance. You can now buy Series 1 on DVD for around 40 pounds. Also, it is currently showing on the SCI FI Channel in the UK.Make sure you watch this show, it is worth it!
