Mega Bloks Big Building Bag

Mega Bloks Big Building Bag

As I mentioned in an earlier review, my grandchildren and I had a sort out of their toys, games, book and DVDs that they keep here. A few needed binning or recycling, some went to the local Air Ambulance charity shop and some went to younger cousins and friends.
One item was 6-year-old Olivia’s that has been here since we moved in four years ago – a bag of pink First Builder Mega Bloks - the Mega Bloks Big Building Bag.
This has been VERY well played with, but now Olivia has given it to her younger cousin, 3 -year old Thomas, to add to his growing Mega Blok collection.

About Mega Bloks

All blocks are usually considered to be a classic toy, and Mega Bloks are no exception. Small hands have no trouble fitting these large blocks together, and the bright colours make fun patterns emerge from even simple constructions.

Mega Bloks are made by a Canadian company and have actually been around since 1967 – I had always thought that they were a relative newcomer.
The large colourful bricks feature the same stud system as Lego Duplo for connecting the bricks together and come in three main sizes:

Size One

The First Mega Bloks are quite large, with rounded studs and designed especially for babies and young toddlers; they are not compatible with any bricks from the Lego brand

Size Two

The Junior Builders are designed for children aged 2 to 5 and are just like Lego Duplo and are compatible with them.

Size Three

The last Mega Bloks range are the standard size bricks that are compatible with standard Lego and suitable for children aged five and over.
The plastic the bricks are very study and durable; there are no sharp edges and all the, bricks fit securely. As opposed to wooden building blocks these bricks are far more hygienic as they can be scrubbed removing any germs after an illness.
This type of building toy is ideal for toddlers

About the Mega Bloks Big Building Bag

These Building Bags come in several different designs including – Pink, Blue and First Builders; each come in a similar plastic bag with a zipped top and hold between 60 – 80 blocks. The bag I am reviewing is the Mega Bloks Big Building Bag - Pink, 80 Pieces.

This set comes in a strong plastic bag that measures around 14” x 12 x 6”; the bag is clear but edged with a vivid pink and has a sturdy zip all around the top to keep the blocks safe and a vivid pink carrying handle. The 80 bricks come in various sizes and various pastel colours – but mainly pink, and includes a 16-stud shocking pink base with four pale pink wheels to build a vehicle on.

Manufacturer’s Details

• 80 First Builders blocks for hours of play
• A pastel colour scheme
• Eco-friendly, PVC-free packaging with strap for storage and portability
• Compatible with other Mega Bloks First Builders products for continuing fun
• Ideal for ages one and up!

My Experience

This bag of 80 pieces of Mega Bloks First Builders has already brought 4 years of so much fun. For Olivia, and now Thomas is more than happy to add them to his collection. They are the perfect size for small hands and I like that the bag comes with a car base which opens up the opportunity for more imagination play. The bag is really sturdy and great for a quick and easy clean up, when play time is over.
The bricks stack easily onto one another to help your child create just about anything they want. They are very well made and should last forever which is great that they can be handed down through my grandchildren. The bag has a good quantity of blocks as well which is great for group play and I am really happy at how durable they are and how they can be tossed around and not even dent or scratch. The blocks don’t fit very tightly together, but for me this isn’t really a problem as I find that young children are less likely to get frustrated if if can get the blocks to separate without adult help.
I also love how easy the storage bag is to zip shut, easy enough for my little grandson to open and close by himself.
Olivia had years of fun playing with this set and incorporated them into play with some of her other favourite toys. When she put them to one side for her younger cousin, she couldn’t resist playing with them for a while herself.
I suppose this pink set is basically designed for girls but Thomas (or us adults) have no problems with this, he is very used to getting ‘girlie’ hand me down toys!!
A bag of these bricks will cost between £17 and £20 a Duplo set of around the same amount of bricks will cost double this.
Educational Value

These bricks are perfect for developing g the child’s imagination as well as the child's motor skills, dexterity and hand eye co-ordination.
This set isn’t wonderful for colour recognition as there are very few colours – the bricks are mainly pink; it is good for teaching counting and numbers though

Caring for the Blocks

• Wipe off blocks with a damp cloth.
• Blocks can be washed in warm water and mild soap.
• Can be washed in a net bag in the dishwasher
• Do not boil, or try to clean in a sanitizer. This can melt the plastic.
Pros and Cons

• Big blocks are ideal for little hands
• Encourages imaginative play
• Large size makes eating blocks difficult

• Tall structures may fall over easily
• Blocks stack, but do not snap together tightly
In Conclusion

If you are looking for a present for a baby or toddler I would really recommend one of these Mega Bloks Big Building Bags. Every young kid should have some building blocks in their toy cupboard – be it Mega Bloks or Duplo and I’d certainly recommend this Mega Bloks set.
If you have a child who is not ready for smaller blocks, but very interested in building, these are definitely for you; the set is both fun and educational and it even has a bag to store them all away neatly after use and ---- THEY DON’T TAKE BATTERIES!!

1. The bag of bricks and wheel base
2. Thomas enjoying the bricks
3. Los of size and colours
4. Olivia has added a couple of Duplo people to the set
5. Olivia having one last play before she hands them over!

Thanks for reading I do hope that this review has been of some help!
