Review of "Melissa & Doug Magnetic Hide & Seek Board"
My nephew handed down bags of toys he no longer played with to my 2 year old son. In these bags were a lot of Melisss and Doug products which I was very grateful for as I do tend to like their toys. One of the toys was the Melissa and Doug magnetic hide and seek board. This toy will cost you £14.99 on Amazon which I think, although not cheap, is not overly expensive for a well made toy.
This toy is recommended for children age 3 and over. Harry is 2 and plays fine with it but probably does not get as much educational value from it as he will when he is older. The board is made from wood and feels very solid. The wood is painted and well finished. The board is separated into 9 brightly coloured squares in rows and columns of 3. Each square has a wooden door which can be opened and closed and each door has a little space at the side for your child to use their finger to open and close it. The doors all have pictures on them and these are all in bright colours. The pictures are things such as a barn, a garage, a cookie jar and a kennel. Behind each door is a magnetic piece which represents the picture on the door such as behind the garage there is a car and behind the kennel is a dog. The magnetic pieces are very easy to take out and put back in and they all fit behind any of the doors.
This toy should help your childs fine motor skills, which I think it has as Harry puts the magnets in and out and opens the little doors. It can also help memory skills by hiding different magnets behind different doors and then trying to remember where they are. Harry is still a little young for this but we will do this when he is older. At Harry's age it is a good toy for helping them to work out that certain items go in certain places such a the bird goes in the bird cage and the cow in the barn.
Harry really enjoys playing with this and to begin with he used to just take all the magnets out and put them back in random doors and seemed to just really enjoy opening and closing the doors. The more we have played with this and shown him where certain magnets should go, he is picking it up well and now knows where all 9 magnets belong on the board. As he gets older we will use this as a memory game.I think this is good value for money as there are several different ways to play with this toy if you use your imagination and it is a toy which should last for a good few years. It is all well made so unless you lose the magnets this is a toy which can be passed on to other children when your child outgrows it.
