What is it all about then? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The controversy involving the use of mobile phones may affect our lives in the days to come. The questions we should be asking ourselves should be “are we in any eminent danger”?
In 1999, the U. S Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) made a statement, which is as follows: “The scientific evidence does not allows us to conclude that mobile phones are absolutely safe… or that they are unsafe”.
Hmm, despite the amount of research that FDA has conducted, they still have not come up with anything concrete.
The first lawsuit against a mobile phone manufacturer was in 1992, when the wife of a man had died of a brain tumour. Sales have rocketed since then to an estimated 300 million users worldwide.
Last year, the FDA decided to look for more answers. They launched a new study in collaboration with the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association (CTIA), to find out if the number of brain cancers and genetic mutations had increased.
Carlo’s way ~~~~~~~~~~~~ George Carlo a U. S public health researcher worked for six years on a $27m research programme and concluded that users did have a greater chance of dying from various types of tumours. Although they were allegations about Carlo’s credibility, he has now teamed up with Peter Angelos, an attorney who previously took on the asbestos and tobacco industries in order to raise enough money for research, which could lead to lawsuits against mobile phone companies.
A doctor in Maryland in the states has recently filed an $800m lawsuit against Motorola and Verizon, claiming that years of mobile phone use had caused his brain cancer. To date, lawsuits filed in the states, have never been successful.
Moving over to the U. K, the situation is a bit uncertain. In April, the independent Expert Group on Mobile Phones stated, “the balance of evidence to date suggests that exposure to RF radiation below guidelines recommended for the U. K does not cause adverse health effects to the general population”. Children are advised not to use mobile phones as they maybe more likely to get cancer.
Colin Blakemore a professor of physiology at Oxford University and an advisor to the National Radiological Protection Board (which controls the regulation of the U. K’s mobile phone industry) has said that there is no evidence linking mobile phones to cancer. He contradicted himself by saying that the radiation emitted by mobile phones, can directly affect the nerve cells.
What are the facts? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In August last year, the CTIA required all manufactures in the U. S to submit figures for SAR (specific absorbed radiation) levels. Very soon, this information will be available to the public. We can use this information to compare the SAR levels of different phones.
This information will be irrelevant to us because, the CTIA will not tell you what the figures mean so what’s the point? The manufacturers do not seem to know either. In the U. K, Motorola and Nokia now pass all health-related enquiries to a trade organisation called the Federation of Electronic Industries.
Despite the risks, manufactures are not actually saying whether their products are safe or not just as smoking cigarettes is probably not safe.
Is it safe to use one? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Whether a mobile phone is safe or not remains a mystery. The results of the new FDA studies may not be available for three years, which by then, new research will contradict their findings.
So, what is a mobile phone user supposed to do? Some scientists recommend that we use our phones moderately if possible with a hand free set. Others say that a hand free set may transmit radiation to the brain.
Enough said, in my opinion, I would say that mobile phones produce radiation waves, which is similar to sticking your head into the microwave. So, think about it. For more information about the organisations mentioned above, just go to:

Apparently rail commuters are at high risk from mobile phone radiation (from voice, texting and internet accessing) which is approaching DANGER LEVELS due to signals bouncing around inside carriages.

The whole population seems to be using cell phones, well it seems that ... ...problems with using the cell phone I ask myself? More and more scientists are studying cordless and cell-phones for the resultant problems people may encounter when using them. The phone does not have to be against your head to present a health issue. Even on standby, clipped to your belt or clothing, the radiation can penetrate your body.
Having carried out a little research in the subject an example of one such program claims that the radiation ...

I don't really know much about the radiation that mobile phones irradiate, but I don't think that many people REALLY do. I think that no where near enough research has been done to draw valid conclusions. As a scientist, you need some pretty conclusive proof one way or the other, and from what I have seen, there is evidence for and against the case, making it difficult to decide one way or the other.
Sure, mobile phones are probably bad for your ... ...by a bus! Sorry to be a pessimist, but one day, something is going to kill you. It is conclusive that smoking causes cancer and adds to coronary heart disease, but most smokers do not really bother. If they do, they will stop smoking altogether. I think that the public on the whole would rather use phones for their convenience, than worry about the potential problems to their health 20 or 30 years down the line. I am one such people, because it seems ...

Advantages: Latest status on mobile phones and health Disadvantages: still doesn't have the full facts (but is the best source as we can get)
The Carphone Warehouse is currently the only UK site (I can find) which carries a wealth of health information relating to mobile phones.
There are other sources of radation figures from (already mentioned in opinions from ciao):
http://www.cellular.co.za/health/radiation_gsm_phone_a-to-z.htm
and another source from CNET:

National Radiological Protection Board (NRPB) and International Commission on Non-Ionising Radiation Protection (ICNIRP)
Both NRPB and ICNRP guidelines incorporate basic restrictions on the Specific Energy Absorption ...

The question of mobile phone safety is going to continue for a long time yet, mainly because no-one knows whether there is a health risk associated with them, or whether they are perfectly safe to use. We have come a long way down the road as to studies into mobile phone safety, and yet most people are none the wiser as to the risks involved. I will hold my hands up straightaway that I have my own mobile phone. I have a mobile for a reason though, ... ...need to have a contact number for people to get hold of me when I am out on jobs or I happen to be out of the office. My business would be cost a lot of money if I didn't have one. It isn't this that I worry about though. There is a big need for the use of mobiles for people like myself with their own businesses, and also no doubt other needs. However I find it disturbing when I see 9 and 10 year old children using mobile phones. It is believed to ...

Being a Teenager myself i know that many people have mobile phones, i have one myself and so do many of my friends. and aspect of the health risks which is not usually brought up is that of how the radiation could affect an adolescent's health. could this radiation damge me? or my younger sister? do i use my mobile enough for there to be a problem. the main thing that bothers me is that even if there isnt a risk (as many people are now saying) i ... ...my mobile phone.
I think that the companies who sell mobile phones should distribute warnings with mobile phones at least saying that the risks are unknown. even if it is found that there are no risks at all it is better to be safe than sorry, and research into this should definatly be continued to find out exactly what the risks are. ...
