Excellent Reference Books

Advantages: Detailed, informative, excellent reference books
Disadvantages: Costly at £35 - £ 40

I can highly recommend the BIBLE series of computer reference books. I own 3: Dreamweaver 2 Bible, Access 97 Bible and Windows 98 Bible. They are all in daily use and are invaluable to me as reference tools. They are normally around the £40 ($50) price but are undoubtedly excellent value for money. Each book usually comes with a CD packed with tutorials, help files, examples and other useful programs. As a learning aid to programs they are brilliant ... more

Administering Groupwise

Advantages: goes deep into the heart of the system
Disadvantages: you need some knowledge going in

I am a GroupWise Administrator for a large system and needed a book to go deeper into the system. In "Administering GroupWise" I found a book that explains in terms I could understand how it all fits together and gives a number of walkthroughs for common tasks. The book is written by Howard Tayler, Tay Kratzer & Ross Phillips and is pubished by McGraw-hill. The sections cover installation, settings and troubleshooting a system and give suggestions ...
...scratch. it gives a good overview of message flow so you can trace messages through the system to track any problems you encounter. Also it explains the logs (Thanks god as they needed explaining). I think this is the best book available at present on Groupwise and recoomend it greatly. It has alraedy become a first port of call for me when i need info. ...

Perl & CGI for the WWW - A Visual Quickstart Guide

Advantages: Easy, simple explanations
Disadvantages: Sometimes unclear where the author is coming from

This book was leant to me from a friend in school, who had already read it and knew the basics. It's an introduction to perl for programming on the internet. It's very entry level and I managed to get through the first 6 chapters with little or no bother. Although it doesn't require much prior knowledge, I didn't feel this book was all it was cracked up to be. Although it's been very helpful, a lot of the time, the author (one Elizabeth Castro), ...
...comes from. Which can be quite frustrating at times, especially at crucial parts that you need to understand. I'd recommend it as an introduction to anyone trying to learn Perl/CGI but you'll need the patience to work out why some of the parts are where they are etc. I'm sure there are better books out there, but the simplicity of this book makes it ideal for an introduction. ...

Upgrading and Repair your Computer

Advantages: It will save you time and money
Disadvantages: Your friends will be calling for help all the time

6 months ago i decided i wanted to know more about how my computer worked and to upgrade it for example. (new graphics card memory or dvd rom ) So i took the plunge and ordred a book from amazon called UPGRADING AND REPAIRING PCs by SCOTT MULLER for £32.00. It was the best money i have spent on my computer it has every thing a novice to expert needs to know in plain english. I started by just adding a new graphics card but over the months i have ...
...and have just built a second computer out of spare parts and bits bought at computer fairs for a fraction of the price of buying one in the shops. You may not want to go this far but it is worth buying just to know how to solve most problems or just doing a fresh install of your operating system (Windows, linux for example) You will save money in the long run do not be put off by the 1600pages as it is well laid out and as a bonus there are to 2 ...

JavaScript: the Definitive Reference

Advantages: comprehensive, clearly written, well organised
Disadvantages: not recipe book, not for beginners

Perhaps a good book on JavaScript does not exist, or JavaScript sucks, or I've yet to read the Goodman bible but "JavaScript the Definitive Guide" by David Flanagan published by O'Reilly is the clearest and most comprehensive description of the COMPLETE language and its implementation in Netscape and I.E thatI've seen. It is not for beginners. It is not good as a recipe book. The examples need to be worked through and understood. You cannot just ...
...Even so, if you're going to be serious about JavaScript then this book is an essential reference. In my view the dearth of good books on the subject is due to Javascript being a messy language further messed up by fights between the big two browsers providers. For a recipe book I'd try the Visual Quickstart Guide: "JavaScript for the world wide web" by Tom Negrino and Dori Smith. ...

JavaScript pocket reference

Advantages: small , cheap , good for reference
Disadvantages: no examples , no tutorials , not for beginners.

This book is another small reference book of only 89 pages and this and the cheap price of only $8.95 U.S dollars was what primarly interested me . The book is primarly an alphabetib object reference which lists JavaScript's objects this includes their availability(version of JavaScript) , a description of the object , the properties , methods and the event handlers. There is also about 25 pages at the start which briefly cover topics like data types ...
...for and do/while) , list of reserved keywords and a list of events . I bought this book mainly to have a reference book that was easy to use and find information fast , this book is good for this reason . The information at the start is an added bonus and can be used as a quick reminder of something you have forgotten. The negative points are there are no examples to try and of course no real tutorials so this book is not for someone starting to ...
