Steel wool can be used for cleaning and removing rust build up prior to oiling and repairing locks. I have padlocks on my workshops that tend to get dirty and start to rust. These clean easily with steel wool.
Tea and coffee stains have a habit of building up on teaspoons. This comes off easily with steel wool.
If you have unvarnished wooden surface you can clean them and bring back their natural colour by washing with a gentle soap (e.g. washing up liquid) and rubbing with fine steel wool. This removes grease, grime and dirt.
You can also remove old varnish and built up furniture polish and dirt the samr way. This is far more environmentally friendly than using acid baths which is the commercial method of doing this.
The only trouble is that steel wool can tear your hands to bits so wear gloves to protect your fingers.
Advantages: keep the house clean Disadvantages: none
I just read another op on this and decided to stop and write one myself.
Her idea was a great one using a mop and a bucket of bleach and water to wash walls down.
More ideas for the mop I have found. It's great on ceilings too. If you have panelling you can polish your panelling in no time. I keep a seperate mop for doing things without the use of water.
I also use a mop in my bath tub. Because of having a bad back I can't bend well and if I pour ... ...and clean. It is also great while your there to wipe down the tiles with. I am all for making housework easier.
As for polishing furniture if you have kids or pets in the home and furniture polish residue is left on something they could lick it off and get ill. I use regular mayo. That may sound a bit odd but it has oil and egg in it and it is good for your furniture, it takes out all the dirt and you just buff well with a dry cloth and it leaves ...

Advantages: Cleans walls in a jiffy Disadvantages: Shows up the damages
Well, I`ve been shopping again. This time the reason for my shopping trip was because I woke up with the urge to clean. No, I`ve not been taking drugs, I do clean sometimes you know. Even though I`ve just done a fairly big spring clean, and yes, I do know it`s November, I thought the house was still looking a bit grubby.
You know the kind of grubby I mean, children type grubby. Handprints on the walls, cupboard doors, fridge doors, door frames, ... ...around the dining table. Now this type of thorough cleaning normally takes a while, that`s because I usually just go around with a bowl of hot soapy water and a cloth and towel.
This time I wanted to make the job a little easier, so I went for a looksy round my local shop to see what would fit the requirements I needed for the task at hand. Here I found the squeegee mop, yep, that`s right, just a simple mop. Now I don`t own a mop because I have ...

Advantages: Cheaper than leather cleaner, does not leave an oily film like baby wipes Disadvantages: None recommended by an independant furniture dealer that I trust and have dealt with for years
I bought a leather suite just over a year ago and was advised by the owner of the shop, to clean the suite that I should use soap flakes as wetting the suite would damage it.
I recently phoned the shop to assure myself that he had said soap flakes and then went to look for this product. The owner of the shop could have mentioned a brand name such as Lux Flakes which as I am sure the women among us will know are pure soap flakes, for cleaning fragile ... ...to a few woman in the supermarket where I purchased the product and they all appeared very scepticle and offered alternative advice, though they themselves were not a 100% happy with these either. I said I would let them know if it worked, or if my suite ended up ruined. Remember I trusted the person who told me to use soap flakes, but I was unsure if this is what he meant.
I diluted the soap flakes in tepid water and using a cloth that I rung as ...

I have a few suggestions, which may come in handy when trying to remove dirt, at University I found that tea cups and mugs would get stained easily especially the inner base. This is not due to lack of washing the cups but simply the stains being to hard to remove. Well anyway I have a tip which will stop you from being embarrassed to leave your mugs out the next time someone comes round.
Here is what you do, get some baking soda put into a plate ... ...use the corner of the towel to put some soda on, then wipe the dirty stained area, and see the difference. Use it near the handle, the base and see the difference and see it work. Your cups will be left looking the first time you bought them. It’s an easy way to keep your cups clean. Another tip of mine concerns the garden, we at home have flagstones and the next tip is for you if you too have flagstones.
Usually you will find that your garden ...

I have a few household tips that my mum and nan have told me over the years, some may sound weird but they do work, so here goes: Get the grouting between bathroom tiles clean and white by brushing with an old toothbrush and some toothpaste, no need for any detergents, toothpaste does the trick.
Stop bathroom mirrors from steaming up by appling a small amount of shaving foam and rubbing it in until it disappears, your mirrors will stay steam free ... ...removed from clothes or other small objects by placing the item in the freezer. When the gum has frozen you will be able to just snap it off. For items that are too large to fit in a freezer just hold an ice cube to the chewing gum until it goes hard and it will be easy to remove.
When two glasses are stuck together, fill the top glass with cold water and submerge the bottom glass in hot water, then gently pull the top glass away. ...
