Muscle injury has become increasingly prevalent in recent years, among horses. This can partly be related to the lack of the old practice of “strapping” (application of a wisp or massage pad to stimulate muscle). Neglect of muscle health will naturally lead to injury. Benefits of massage: Disperses waste products in muscle (and other soft tissue) and restores normal function to injured areas. Increases the range of motion. Improves stamina. As a preventative measure, subtle tissue changes are noticed at an earlier stage. Improves circulation. Enhances performance and gait quality. Improves disposition. Massage benefits ALL horses. It is good for horses which are on box rest, older horses, nervous types and horses with behavioral problems. Muscle injury can go for as long as 90 days undetected depending on the extent of the damage. In this way, massage can detect and resolve the problem before it (a) becomes a physical issue , lameness etc.. and (b) a mental one, behavioural problems as a result of pain.
