*This review is long, but it is a guide to choosing and looking after the most wonderful of pets and I’ve tried to be as comprehensive as I can.**I am not an expert, all the information and advice in here is based on my experience as an enthusiastic “Mummy” to a total of six piggies over the last decade. If you’re looking for a small pet to join your family then forget hamsters, pass the gerbils by and seriously look into the sweetest, friendliest, funniest members of the rodent family that go by the common name of Guinea Pigs. Right at the outset, I’m going to admit that I’m severely biased in ... more

Advantages Advantages Sweet, never bite, lovely animals

Disadvantages Disadvantages Constant feeding, cleaning etc.

Guinea pigs. I'm sure we all know a bit about them. Furry, grow up to a foot long, sort of like a cross between a gerbil and a ferret. But, knowing what they look like etc isn't going to help much when you've got your first guinea pig from the pet shop and you haven't a clue what to to. So, I thought maybe I would help out. I bought my fifth guinea pig today. When I was about 9, my Dad bought Stumpy. A few years after Stumpy died, there was Nikki and Sally, sisters. When Sally died a few months ago, just before I moved out from home, we didn't want Nik to be lonely, so bought Minnie. Nik died ... more

Advantages Advantages sweet, very friendly, good for small children

Disadvantages Disadvantages can be quite smelly

For my daughters 7th birthday she requested a guinea pig I did some research and discovered that its better to have 2 or 3 rather than one as they are happier in groups and don’t make very good solitary pets, some people recommended keeping one with a rabbit and a good friend of mine (now) breeds them and wouldn’t recommend that option as rabbits can be quite aggressive, so two piggies it was. Grandad make her a hutch it is about 1ft wide by 3 ft long with water proof roofing material and an arch leading to bedding area. Both the bedding area and the main hutch are accessible by a ... more

Advantages Advantages Cute, cuddly, easy to keep pets for children

Disadvantages Disadvantages They sometimes wee on you!

Guinea pigs are an ideal pet for children. They are cute, cuddly, cheap easy to look after and can be quite friendly if they are handled enough. If you are considering buying one, you will need a hutch (preferably wooden, but some plastic ones are fine). This can be either kept indoors or outdoors, but will need a covering to keep the rain out if it is kept outdoors. Line the bottom of the cage with newspaper and sawdust and/or hay (they will also eat some of the hay). They need cleaning out at least once a week and feeding every day with vegetables and fruits (as they cannot make their own ... more

    Advantages Advantages great for kids

Disadvantages Disadvantages need to look after well.

Guinea pigs are very cute, cuddly animals, and they rarely bite. I remember my first guinea pigs- I was about 3 when we got them. I was always cudling and stroking them. Im 16 now, and I've got 4 guinea and I love them!. Housing and equipment: You will need to buy a hutch for you guinea pigs to live in. There are many different shapes and sizes. The hutch should be atleast 45cm square for one guinea pigs, 90cm long and 45cm high and wide for 2, and so on. The hutch should really be made out of would, and easy to open out for cleaning. A guinea pig can live inside or outside. If outside the ... more
