This is rather a long review, and I hope not to boring.
For my 50th Birthday, my Family kindly clubbed together and bought me a computer, not a new one, just a basic second hand model with windows 98, but it did me a treat, it had no speakers, or printer with it, but I found a pair of compatible speakers at a car boot for £1.00. My Sister had an old Hewlett Packard ... ...me.
This is just a black printer, (not colour) and as there was no ink cartridge in this printer, I promptly went out to buy one…
To my horror they were really expensive, good job it wasn’t a colour one, as there was no way I would have been able to afford a colour cartridge as well, I spent most of the morning shopping around for the cheapest, and found a compatible one in a little computer shop, for £14.99, after seeing them ... more

For my 50th Birthday, my Family kindly clubbed together and bought me a computer, not a new one, just a basic second hand model with windows 98, but it did me a treat, it had no speakers, or printer with it, but I found a pair of compatible speakers at a car boot for £1.00. My Sister had an old Hewlett Packard DeskJet 600 printer in her garage, which she kindly gave me.
This is just a black printer, (not colour) and as there was no ink cartridge in this printer, I promptly went out to buy one… To my horror they were really expensive, good job it wasn’t a colour one, as there was no way I would have been able to afford a colour cartridge as well, I spent most of the morning shopping around for the cheapest, and found a compatible one in a little computer shop, for £14.99, after seeing them priced elsewhere at between £17-£23.
I bought it quickly before I had time to change my mind, and it worked fine, lasted about 5 months, (my Grandson uses it quite a lot for his homework as he is Dyslexic too).
Well I decided to look around before it ran out, to see what other options there were, I had seen DIY kits, in a few shops ranging from £7.50-£12 but having bad hands, I wasn’t sure if I would be able to refill my own! Then I happened to be in Safeway and spotted the “JR Universal inkjet kit” and to my surprise it was only £5.99 for the black one.
I bought it, then had to wait for the other one to run out, which wasn’t untill two weeks later, March this year. Well I thought here goes. I opened the packet, which was a clear plastic with a nice picture on the front, of a printer, a hand with a syringe in!!!!! And “JR universal” at the top, then in large yellow letters underneath “inkjet” underneath that it said “black refill kit, universal ink” and in large red letters contains FREE flush.
THE KIT
~Two x 25ml bottles of black ink~ ~One x 25ml bottle of flush (for cleaning the print heads)~ ~One Syringe, and a little metal tube to fill you cartridge with~ ~A very small drill, and drill bit to make a hole in the cartridge, (if you haven’t already got one)~ ~A little rubber bung, to put in the hole you made~ ~A little curtain wire type screw, to make the filling hole the right size~ ~A leaflet with instructions on how to use the flush~ ~A leaflet on how to fill the cartridge~ ~A leaflet telling you all about the other items made by JR inkjet ltd~
THE INSTRUCTIONS
These were very easy to follow. The flush instructions, varied depending on what type of printer you have, as some have the print head on the cartridge, while others like mine have the print head in the printer, for ones on the cartridge you just stand the cartridge in a small amount of the flush over night, (on a saucer or small dish) For the printer like mine, I put a small amount of flush in my cartridge and ran it through the printer, it says about 12 pages. There are three little self explanatory pictures showing step 1, 2 and three on the back of the pack, but do follow the instruction from start to finish and you shouldn’t go far wrong.
The ink filling instructions were also very straight forward, I did have a bit of difficulty making the hole with the funny little plastic drill, at one stage I nearly went and put the cartridge in my vice, and used my rechargeable drill, but I managed it in the end wiht two hands and my teath.
The filling was simple, putting the bung in after was another matter, I had fun with that (if you can imagine trying to push in a rubber drawing pin) well that’s what it was like, but I got there in the end.
THE END RESULT
I tried it in my printer, and it was great, I have filled it up once more since then, and found it even easier the second time, I still have lots of flush left, and a whole bottle of the ink. So I am really very happy with this product, if I can do it with my Arthritis, I’m sure anyone else can. And yes I certainly will be using this again......
PRICE AND MORE INFO
Well as I have already said, I paid £5 99 for mine in Safeway, I bought another one last week, as I noticed there were only about 6 left on the shelf, and our Safeway’s is supposed to be changing hands in the new year, so I don’t want to take any chances . They did also have colour kits in, that were £9.99 each, and consisted of, 1 bottle of each, red, blue, yellow, plus the flush, and all the other items that are in the black kit. I have since seen these kits in other shops, ranging from £7.00- £9.99 black, and between £10.99-£14.99 for the colour kit.
On the pack it states, between 1 to 6 refills, depending on the capacity of your cartridge, (mine will do 4) It also lists some compatible printer manufactures
They say the kits are compatible with over 300 inkjet printers.

Advantages: Save money! Disadvantages: Need patience!
Inkjet cartridges are very expensive, particularly so for Hewlett Packard printers, although I am sure that most makes of printer have equally expensive cartridges. You can get the Hewlett Packard printers at very competitive prices now, and I have a Deskjet 710c, which has been replaced by newer models, nevertheless I think it is a good quality printer, quiet, and the print quality is crisp and clear.
The only downside to this printer for me, is ... ...to run out fairly often, as I am always printing information which I find on the web, apart from the fact my grandchildren also like to print stuff too!
The cost of a new HP cartridge is around £27 for a tri colour cartridge and £21 for a black cartridge.
In an attempt to save money I purchased a recycled colour cartridge from PC World, cost £21.99, “great” I thought, a saving of £5 - £6 pounds!
When I got home I replaced my empty ...

Advantages: Offers huge saving on new cartridges Disadvantages: can be messy and fiddly
Like many people I find the cost of new printer ink cartridges too expensive. I have tried the alternative route of buying refurbished ones where empty cartridges are cleaned, refilled and resold. My opinion, don’t waste your money. The simple reason is the cartridge’s metal contacts are very delicate and are made useless by taking them in and out of the printer numerous times. If you get a well used refurbished cartridge it simply won’t work or ... ...painful and expensive experience.
A better idea which I now use you may want to try, is refilling your own cartridges. Nothing new in that you say but I fill them in situ and it extends the cartridge life considerably.
You will need either a colour inkjet refill kit or a black inkjet refill kit or both obviously depending on your needs. JR Universal refill kits tend to be the most popular and are available everywhere, even my local supermarket ...

Advantages: great cost reduction Disadvantages: you may get dirty
At home we use a Lexmark printer (Z31). Actually, we’re quite happy with it. It is good value for the money and the print image is okay. But it has one substantial error: it needs terribly expensive ink cartridges. You can keep comparing prices, you just won’t find anything for a reasonable price. I mean reasonable for the shopper – for the producer it is reasonable! The black cartridges cost about 24 $, the colour cartridges about ... ...a look into a catalogue for office supplies and really – the cartridges were a bit cheaper there. But only a BIT. Accidentally I found something else there, a refill set for ink cartridges, and that was MUCH cheaper! The one for black cartridges costs 13 $, for the colour cartridge 15 $. In fact I was a little sceptic, how that should work, but for that price I had to test it at least. Resolvedly I ordered 2 sets ("Pharao Refill Sets"). No ...

J R Universal Inkjet Refill Kits
---------------------------------------
A little while ago (15/9/02 to be exact-still have the receipt) I purchased the J R Universal Inkjet Black Refill Kit from my local Asda store for £8.09. I bought it because my Epson printer had ran out of black ink and quite frankly I didn’t want to pay the price (around £15 - £20) for the manufacturers ink, which only re-fills once.(If this makes me a bit tight, then so ... ...got the receipt after all this time I hear you ask. This will become apparent shortly. But first let me tell you about the kit.
The kit came in a blister pack and contained: • 1 25ml bottle of flush (to flush the print heads with). This is a free extra.
• 2 25ml bottles of black ink (the colour version contains 1 bottle of each colour i.e. magenta (red), cyan (blue) and yellow).
• A syringe and steel tube attachment (for filling your cartridge).

After some deliberation I yet again made a trip down to PC World, not my favourite shop as staff tend to be totally useless. But, if you know what you want and you do not have to ask any questions you know you can be in and out within a flash.
There are many refill kits on the market, from the well known brand JR Inkjet Refills or shops own brands, you get the same amount of ink in each bottle as you do in the more expensive brands, and the instructions ... ...the prices of the JR brand, for the black ink refill which was £11.99 for 2 x 30ml bottles, and £18.99 for the colour refill which consists of 3 x 30ml, one of each colour (cyan, magenta and yellow ink). PC World's price for the black refill kit was £10.00 which contained 2 x 30ml bottles and the colour was £17.00 for 3 x 30 ml bottles. The refill kit will last up to 6 refills and when you only pay £10.00 for a box and you have to pay around £15 ...
