You would think being born in Trinidad I wouldn’t have problems with those mosquitoes, well you are wrong, after spending many years away from my home land and returning back for holidays, the mosquitoes had field days with me! Dem mosquitoes just didn’t like me or rather they were after my blood!
Ohmi gosh! But why?
These are insects that like to use their skills in biting ... ...are caused by bacteria, viruses and parasites.
Mosquitoes can sense carbon dioxide and lactic acid up to 36 metres! Imagine that! Some chemicals in sweat attract them. If you notice people who do not sweat don’t get bitten as much. (I noticed people were wiping sweat off their faces and me Oh gosh! I kept smacking them with any thing I could lay my hands on.)

You would think being born in Trinidad I wouldn’t have problems with those mosquitoes, well you are wrong, after spending many years away from my home land and returning back for holidays, the mosquitoes had field days with me! Dem mosquitoes just didn’t like me or rather they were after my blood!
Ohmi gosh! But why?
These are insects that like to use their skills in biting people, causing pain, suffering and swelling. They carry diseases that are caused by bacteria, viruses and parasites.
Mosquitoes can sense carbon dioxide and lactic acid up to 36 metres! Imagine that! Some chemicals in sweat attract them. If you notice people who do not sweat don’t get bitten as much. (I noticed people were wiping sweat off their faces and me Oh gosh! I kept smacking them with any thing I could lay my hands on.) If you wear clothing that contracts with the background these mosquitoes can see you and whoopee they after your blood!
They can also detect heat; they love warm blooded people, (like me!) mammals and birds. They have many sensors like the military aircraft. They know how to track their victims to attack! Because of this illustration, you would appreciate why they are so good in using their sensors to trace you and bite you for your blood. And guess which one bite! Boy it does have a long mouth! Yeah it is the Female!
She lands on your skin and sticks her proboscis, her mouth (for piercing skin) into you; her saliva contains anticoagulants that prevent your blood from clotting. Once she sucks your blood into her abdomen she will remain there until she has a full abdomen. If she gets disturbed she will fly away.
Once she has bitten you some of her saliva remains in the wound, it is interesting that the proteins (anticoagulants) from her saliva evoke an immune response from your body. That is why the area swells and resembles like wheat. You begin to itch, that is a response provoked by the saliva. After a time, the swelling goes, but you itch until your immune cells break down the saliva proteins.(I just went beserk!)
The diseases they carry can be Malaria, which is more prevalent in tropical climates. It is a severe disease and it can be fatal, which is caused by a parasite that grows in your blood stream. Once this happens in the next few days to several months you get the symptoms of fever, headaches, chills, muscle aches and flu like symptom. It can be treated with ant malarial drugs and prevented vaccinations.
Another disease is yellow fever, it is more prevalent is Africa. The symptoms are similar to malaria, but include nausea, vomiting and jaundice, it too can be fatal. As far as I am aware there is no treatment, but is can be controlled by vaccination and mosquito repellent.
If you are bitten, wash the bites with mild soap and water, you will have the urge to itch, (Oooooooo) try not to scratch. You can buy calamine cream or lotion or cortisone cream. Seek medical attention. You may feel nauseated and dizzy perhaps due to severe allergic reaction to the bite. If you are going to a tropical another way you can prepare yourself is buy repellent cream.
As far as I am aware most countries conduct spraying of pesticides to control mosquitoes’ population. When we were in Trinidad & Tobago we did noticed truckload each day spraying this in the evening. It seemed to work. I also noticed too on the airline we were travelling back to also sprayed pesticides.
During those spraying sessions no one became ill or had any allergic reaction.
Now you know why I have an army of repellent creams, tough luck she ent coming after me, cause I am prepared for her attack!
Advantages: Absolutely None Disadvantages: Flu-like symptoms, aches and pains, can lead to cellulitis and other more serious problems
Please take this advice seriously: NEVER THINK SPIDERS ARE HARMLESS CREATURES.
As the Merck Manual states, "All spiders are poisonous." The difference in those that harm us and those that do not is the length of their fangs and their ability to penetrate the skin. The Brown Recluse spider's fangs are obviously long enough to bite into our skin.
I am the second in my family to fall victim to this spider who so enjoys hiding under cushions and pillow, ... ...knows where else. This evil little creature only dares to come out from his safe haven when it's dark and he cannot be seen. Unfortunately, we have little or nothing to protect us from the damage he can cause.
Just this past Sunday night, I got up from the dinner table and felt extremely "weird." I was at my mother's house, and I didn\'t want to make a scene, so I quickly said that I really needed to go home and got outside the house. I'm very lucky ...

Advantages: itch free autumns Disadvantages: Deet is sticky
Insect bites, I loathe them. Thet, however are an integral part of Autumn, Mozzies are in their death throws and fleas are coming in from the cold so we are all going to experience them.
I am not going to tell you how great hydrocortisone is or how effective antihistan is but more I will give some avoidance on getting bitten in the first place and what you have in your cupboard that can help.
Firstly - avoid getting bitten. Mozzies like stagnant ... ...in your garden that house stagnant water, and if you can't, get some goldfish - they eat larvae and your rain water butts etc can house goldfish if you take care not to let them run dry. Shut the windows early evening and screens do a lot to keep the wee beasties out. Secondly wear insect repellant. Your chemist will advise you, but Deet is the best available, but if you hate the stuff, change your diet and hygene.
Mozzies like people who are hot ...

As all the family borded the flight to Mexico for our annual holiday all i could think of was the travel agent telling me to take lots of travel plugs and mozzy spray. But as all travel agents are a bit over the top sometimes i thought nothing of it.
I was i bit concerned and worried that i'd forgoten the plug tablets and checked my suit case a dozen times before we left.
But when we got there i soon forgot about all the worry and started to relax, ... ...first night and saw in the corner of my eye something that scared the life out of me.
I've been bitten by mosquito's in the past but never saw anything as big as this one, i mean it was massive. I've never moved so fast, but it was all to late as the buggar had already taken a bite. I found the bigest, meanest and scratchiest bite the next morning right on my shoulder.
I couldn't keep my nails away from it for about three days, i found that washing ...
