Dem mosquitoes don’t like me.

You would think being born in Trinidad I wouldn’t have problems with those mosquitoes, well you are wrong, after spending many years away from my home land and returning back for holidays, the mosquitoes had field days with me! Dem mosquitoes just didn’t like me or rather they were after my blood!

Ohmi gosh! But why?

These are insects that like to use their skills in biting people, causing pain, suffering and swelling. They carry diseases that are caused by bacteria, viruses and parasites.

Mosquitoes can sense carbon dioxide and lactic acid up to 36 metres! Imagine that! Some chemicals in sweat attract them. If you notice people who do not sweat don’t get bitten as much. (I noticed people were wiping sweat off their faces and me Oh gosh! I kept smacking them with any thing I could lay my hands on.)
If you wear clothing that contracts with the background these mosquitoes can see you and whoopee they after your blood!

They can also detect heat; they love warm blooded people, (like me!) mammals and birds.
They have many sensors like the military aircraft. They know how to track their victims to attack! Because of this illustration, you would appreciate why they are so good in using their sensors to trace you and bite you for your blood. And guess which one bite! Boy it does have a long mouth! Yeah it is the Female!

She lands on your skin and sticks her proboscis, her mouth (for piercing skin) into you; her saliva contains anticoagulants that prevent your blood from clotting. Once she sucks your blood into her abdomen she will remain there until she has a full abdomen. If she gets disturbed she will fly away.

Once she has bitten you some of her saliva remains in the wound, it is interesting that the proteins (anticoagulants) from her saliva evoke an immune response from your body. That is why the area swells and resembles like wheat. You begin to itch, that is a response provoked by the saliva. After a time, the swelling goes, but you itch until your immune cells break down the saliva proteins.(I just went beserk!)

The diseases they carry can be Malaria, which is more prevalent in tropical climates. It is a severe disease and it can be fatal, which is caused by a parasite that grows in your blood stream. Once this happens in the next few days to several months you get the symptoms of fever, headaches, chills, muscle aches and flu like symptom.
It can be treated with ant malarial drugs and prevented vaccinations.

Another disease is yellow fever, it is more prevalent is Africa. The symptoms are similar to malaria, but include nausea, vomiting and jaundice, it too can be fatal. As far as I am aware there is no treatment, but is can be controlled by vaccination and mosquito repellent.

If you are bitten, wash the bites with mild soap and water, you will have the urge to itch, (Oooooooo) try not to scratch. You can buy calamine cream or lotion or cortisone cream. Seek medical attention. You may feel nauseated and dizzy perhaps due to severe allergic reaction to the bite.
If you are going to a tropical another way you can prepare yourself is buy repellent cream.

As far as I am aware most countries conduct spraying of pesticides to control mosquitoes’ population. When we were in Trinidad & Tobago we did noticed truckload each day spraying this in the evening. It seemed to work. I also noticed too on the airline we were travelling back to also sprayed pesticides.

During those spraying sessions no one became ill or had any allergic reaction.

Now you know why I have an army of repellent creams, tough luck she ent coming after me, cause I am prepared for her attack!
