Review of "Member Advice on Shopping Online"
I am a big fan of online shopping, I’ve been shopping online for about a year now. Luckily I don’t have to use my parents credit card, I have a solo card on my cash card account. Many people have ideas in their heads that internet shopping is not safe. There is more chance of credit/debit card fraud by shopping over the phone or using mail order. Before entering your details on a website check there is a padlock on the desktop, this means that you are an encrypted secure connection. You should also make sure that the website you are shopping with has a phone number and address and is preferably based in the UK. Many banks now offer protection for shopping on the internet and some websites like Amazon for example will reimburse you if fraud is committed. Many high-street stores are opening up websites on the Internet. You would think that these websites would be good as they are from a familiar name that you think you can trust. This is sometimes true but often not. Take the Comet website for example, like the shop it is very poor. You have to wait ages for a response by their “trained” customer service “experts.”
Shopping on the internet gives you access to a far better selection of products compared to what you get at high street shops. There are many rare and unusual things you can buy on the internet that you just can’t get in high-street shops. Delivery varies from site to site, some take just 1-2 days, others can take weeks.Internet auctions have recently proved very popular. Beware internet auctions are not the same as buying from Amazon or blackstar. There is an element of trust involved. The auction websites often accept no responsibility if you don’t get the goods that you have paid for. Some auction sites like QXL have direct auctions where the items on sale on auction by the website. I have bought off one of these direct auctions and never had problems.
Shopping on American sites. Firstly you will need to use Visa or MasterCard, American websites don’t accept debit cards. You must bear in mind when shopping on American sites that you will have to pay UK duty on top of American tax. Below is the tax that you will have to pay if you buy a product from a website which is based in a country not in the EU. As you can see from below this pushes the price up quite a bit. Take for example a camcorder that cost the equivalent of £1000 on a US site. You would have to pay £225 on English tax. That certainly makes shopping on US sites less attractive.CD’s – 3.5% duty. +17.5% VAT
Video games – 2.8% +17.5% VAT
Camcorders – 4.9% +17.5% VAT
Computers – 0% +17.5% VAT
Shirts – 12%
Outergarments – 13% +17.5% VAT
Undergarments – 13% +17.5% VAT
Overall shopping on the net is great, it is saves time and hassle. Customer service is often better and it’s cheaper. Just remember the golden rules, make sure there’s a padlock on the desktop and the website has a phone number and address.
