Emulation, the wonder of discovery

Everything that starts with E ... EMULATION, THE WONDER OF DISCOVERY What is emulation? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Emulation is simply a process of using software to ‘emulate’ hardware. For example, using an emulator you can play N64 games on a PC that doesn’t use hardware anything like an N64. For the already familiar ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~ What was your first experience with using an Emulator? Mine was using a Java based Spectrum emulator to play games I recollected from my childhood whilst I was supposed to be doing College coursework. I remember when I first played on a Spectrum emulator on my home computer. The sounds of the loading screen were like orchestrated music to my ears... for about 10 seconds which is when I was pleased to find the quick load option Emulation is special because it enables people to play games of memories past without having to go through the rigmarole of searching the second hand shops for countless machines, and then countless games. It also eliminates the arduous aforementioned loading times for older computer games. Another improvement emulation offers, is I can play classic games that were not released in my territory (often not even in my language... bless you translation teams! ) Another area where Emulation can improve games is this, in a lot of Role Playing Games for example I have often reached a level whereby I can kill 99.9% of enemies in my sleep. Sadly though the randomly generated nature of the battles in a lot of these games make them impossible to ...

Kazaa Downloader Application 20/02/2003

A HAVEN FOR VIRUSES AND PIRATES ALIKE

Kazaa Downloader Application P2P software, I’m sure that the vast majority of you have heard of this before now. Just as likely is the fact that you have used some sort of P2P software, be it Napster, Audiogalaxy or one of the many other variants. In this review I am concentrating on what I believe to be one of the best for downloading Audio, as well as Movies. ABOUT KAZAA = Kazaa, or Kazaa Media Desktop to give it its full name is the creation of Sharman Networks. Sharman Networks are a company that is commited to creating P2P software applications. Kazaa is a legitimate application that is often used for illigitimate reasons, it has been blamed by many for allowing people to download pirated material. What is there to download on Kazaa? Basically anything you care to think of will be shared on the Kazaa network. However, just because the file is shared doesn’t mean you will be able to access and download it. This is due to factors that I will explain further later on in this review. The majority of files on the network are of the dubious legality variety. These include the latest games and applications as well as the latest MP3s and Movies hot off the reels. So this program is just about people pirating products instead of buying them? Well it would be churlish of me to say that the majority of users use this for anything other than illegal means, but there are legitimate reasons. Kazaa can be used as a platform for distributing legal material such as: Shareware, ...

NVIDIA Ti 200 Graphics card 64 MB DDR SDRAM 22/09/2002

May the GeForce be with you

NVIDIA Ti 200 Graphics card 64 MB DDR SDRAM Introduction The GeForce range of cards have been well established in the PC market for many years now. GeForce cards are generally considered to be the very best card for a Computer enthusiast to obtain for many reasons. The main reason is performance, the GeForce cards tend to perform better, and are more compatable than any other card, with excellent driver* support from Nvidia.com (they who design the GeForce chipset). The GeForce range of cards has always had competition,. but in my opinion they are still unsurpassed. Later on in this review I shall mention some of the competitors, and why you should/shouldn't buy a GeForce ahead of them. This review is for the GeForce 3 Ti200 - this is no longer considered a cutting edge card, but is good enough for all but those who demand the very very best performance. In general a GF3 Ti200 should be more than enough to run even the most demanding of games at full detail, providing you have a decent enough PC pushing the card. About the card The GF3 Ti200 is the little brother of the GF3, and the GF3 Ti500. The differences between the various GeForce 3 cards is simple: Faster core speeds = slightly higher framerates Faster memory speeds = higher framerates at higher resolutions, where memory bandwith is essential, to stop the card from choking. The GF3 Ti200 has slower Core, and Memory speeds than both the GF3, and the top of the range GF3 Ti500. This shouldn't perturb you though, as both of the latter ...

Grand Theft Auto 3 (PC) 20/06/2002

BAN THIS SICK GAME

Grand Theft Auto 3 (PC) If it were true that violent games, breed violent people – then I would be considered to be Public Enemy No1 after playing this game for a long stretch. Beating people to death, shooting them, running them over and stealing cars are all just ways to progress in this game. Now in real life I have never had the compulsion to do any of these things, nor would I ever – but when you do these things in the game, you are surely not human if you don't cackle like a mad person when you first do these things. Grand Theft Auto 3, the third game in the series, which they tried to ban, is the first game in the crime series to be in full 3D. The main plot of the game is that you are a wannabe gangster making your way up the crime scene by doing jobs for gangsters that are much higher up the hierarchy than you. In order to complete the jobs, you have to complete objectives such as, going on massacres, stealing cars, rigging cars up with explosives, straight forward racing, disposing of dead bodies, even picking up pages of a 'Specialist' Porn magazine whilst driving in a Van for one Mexican gangster…. The games missions are nothing if not varied. WHAT OPPOSITION DOES A GANGSTER HAVE? You don't get the whole City to yourself you know. Along with all the ordinary pedestrians and drivers, there are people who don't like you very much and who take great pleasure in trying to kill you whenever you go near them or in their territory. These include, the Triads, the Mafia, a ...

Do you want help to write better computer opinions

Everything that starts with W ... .... then look elsewhere. This'll do for starters though, I hope! An accusation often correctly leveled at reviews for Computer items, is that they are often written in pure technical jargon. This has 2 discernable consequences: a) Only the computer literate will tend to understand them, and to be quite honest a large percentage of those will already know a significant amount about the product being reviewed. This is especially true if it's a product such as in this instance a graphics card. b) The non - technically inclined will be at a complete loss as to what the review is about, or at the very least what the review means. This is a pity, as the product may genuinely interest the reading consumer, if they knew what the opinion writer was talking about! It is for this purpose, that I will always from now on do my best to cater for all users, for computer aficionados, and computer novices alike. In the main at the end of any of my future reviews, I hope that you at least know more about the product that I reviewed, and whether or not it would hold any value for you. There is always room for improvement for any writer however, so my tips for writing better Computer opinions are: 1) Ensure you are factually correct, and the information is relevant This is quite a big bugbear with me, I have read many Computer reviews in the past that have contained quite large technical inaccuracies or just glaring omissions regarding the abilities of the ...

MAME - Emulator 18/04/2002

Over 3000 GAMES FOR FREE... Wooooohooooooo

MAME - Emulator Do you have any fond memories of any arcade games? Perhaps you can remember wasting away time when you were younger by blasting a few space invaders, or any of the other hundreds of games that would be found in Arcades up and down the country. If by any chance you do have an urge to play an old arcade machine, chances are you can do this now, just by owning a PC, this piece of software and some ROM images for the games you wish to play (which can be downloaded from many sites). What is MAME? MAME, is an emulator that emulates many different arcade machines, hence the name which stands for Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator. A brief history of MAME The following text is quoted from the MAME Support document that is included with the emulator: 1997.02.05 - In the beginning there was Mame, the DOS text based program authored by Italian programmer Nicola Salmoria in 1996 and released on Feb. 05 ~Quote ends~ MAME as you can see has been in development for years upon years. This development was not inspired by an urge of to commit piracy to avoid having to pay to play the games. Instead it was started as a project to archive and keep playable games that have long since become extinct from Arcades. The same basic premise is around today, no currently viable Arcade Machine (i.e. one that is still amassing money) will be emulated until that status changes. As luck would have it though, the ones that fit into that criteria are the games that ...

Project64 (Nintendo 64 Emulator) 07/04/2002

PROJECT64 - PLAY NINTENDO 64 GAMES ON YOUR PC

Project64 (Nintendo 64 Emulator) Project 64 is a program for the PC that emulates another machine and enables you to play games that were designed for that machine. So what machine does it emulate? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ It emulates the Nintendo 64, a console that was released a while back and has long since stopped being sold in most outlets. Only a few specialist stores will sell the machine itself, although they are abundant in second hand shops. With so many brilliant games made for the N64, emulation of the system was inevitable, and was first made possible by an emulator known as UltraHLE. PJ64, plays more games; games such as Goldeneye, Conkers Bad Fur Day, as well as titles such as Perfect Dark makes this the emulator of choice. About PJ64 in general ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~ PJ64 was started as an exercise by the authors to see if they had the ability to be able to program an emulator for the N64. The way PJ64 was created is very technical, and to try to explain it within the confines of an opinion would be both irrelevant and too lengthy. Next bit is a little technical, so feel free to skip it: The main parts that needed to be coded for the emulator was something called the Core. The core is the main part of the console, and the part that instructs the machine what it needs to do. Once this was done several other parts were added, including something called RSP (Reality Signal Processor) emulation. This is another major part of the N64, and it is testament to ...

Is your computer a pain in the arse

Everything that starts with P ... The aim of this opinion is to provide general technical support for users who are having Computer related problems. I will also assemble a collection of tips, that will be updated in time. If you have any questions regarding anything to do with this opinion, then leave a comment. You can also email me, via the address on my profile. I aim to provide tips for all major Windows operating systems, at the moment the only section is Windows XP. That should soon though, if this opinion takes off. Win XP Specific ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1. First of all, as this first point is covered in far more detail elsewhere, I will just advise all of you lovely people of the link: http://www.3dspotlight.com/tweaks/winxpservices/index.shtml Basically it's a guide of how to configure the services on Windows XP. By default there is a lot of stuff loaded up, that isn't needed - thus this can create quite a ram hog. 2. The second tip is also for XP, and as far as I know also for Windows 2000: If you don't use the Hibernate function (whereby the OS stores whatever information was present in memory to HD), this in theory enables you to shut down power from the computer, but return to the same state upon power on. However this can be a stress on the HD. The size of the hiberfil.sys is in direct relation to the amount of ram you have. To disable this simply go to: Start>Settings>Control Panel>Power Options>Hibernate And uncheck the box. 3. If you have ...

Lavasoft Ad-Aware 5 22/02/2002

GIVE SPYWARE A KICK UP THE ARSE

Lavasoft Ad-Aware 5 Ad-Aware is a very useful program that aids in the detection and the removal of 'Spyware' from your computer. Spyware is often installed on your PC covertly when you install certain pieces of software. If you have one of these pieces of software, the chances are you have some spyware included on your computer: GoZilla, Morpheous, Audiogalaxy, Gator, Bearshare, Limewire, Grokster, Net2Phone, Realplayer, Bonzi-Buddy etc WHAT DOES SPYWARE DO? It can do a variety of things, the usual thing is that it will report back statistics regarding what browser you are using, what link on a particular website you clicked, what your IP address is, etc I honestly don't mind some types of spyware, as long as I am sufficiently notified of it before it is installed. Sadly this is hardly ever the case; instead it is put onto your computer without your prior knowledge. Spyware installed when you are not notified of its installation on your computer is often known as foist ware. SOME EXAMPLES OF SPYWARE AND THEIR SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS = GATOR ~~~~~~ This is installed by a variety of programs, as well as being freely downloadable via itself on the Gator website. The problem with this form filling software is that it is one of the most horrid pieces of spyware around. Gators spying abilities come in three distinct sections, first of all there is: 1. The main program function, the main programs usage is to save you time by filling out repetitive forms on ...

Search not in vain, for Google is here

google.com When I first got into the internet I seemed to believe that the only way to find new sites was by looking on Yahoo. After a while I thought that Yahoo may not be the best after all, especially when I heard people refering to Google; hundreds upon hundreds of hits within a matter of seconds (often less). Surely not I thought, I thought wrong; very wrong indeed! Pros for using Google ~Extremely fast - you won't be waiting whilst it compiles the search results ~Accuracy unrivalled - seldom gives you sites that wouldn't be applicable to what you typed. ~Allows use of filters via advanced search option - In other words, you can ask for it only to return pages written in a specific language, or updated recently, or results from a specific domain ie, only search for .com sites rather than .co.uk etc. You can also search for the exact phrase you typed (useful for finding out complete song lyrics) or you can ask for it to find those words anywhere on the webpage. Image Searching --------------- I would normally advise against letting children use this feature also, as their is a warning that image search may contain mature content. You can turn on a mature content filter though, this works incredibly effectively. As a test I searched for words that would normally yield pictures of an adult nature. When I searched for a certain word for example, I was confronted with pictures of cute cats. I will leave it up to you to guess what the word was ...

Top 10 Videogames of all time 13/02/2002

FIDDLING WITH MY JOYSTICK

Top 10 Videogames of all time Sorry about that title, but it was the only thing that I could think of. Also it goes well with my Cueball World opinions title.. don't you think! These are my top 10 computer/console games of all time: 10. International Track & Field - PS1 This is included for it's sheer fun and competetion value in multiplayer mode. In single player this would just about scrape into my top 100. This is the type of game that makes you nearly burst a blood vessel as you are tapping the buttons so fast in order to beat the record time/distance. Events included are many, the control systems for each event though are pretty much the same. This makes the game accessible and easy to learn. Top tip: Don't tap the buttons alternately, instead position a finger between the x and circle buttons or the x and square. Then rub in between just pressing the buttons as you do this. Sometimes wrapping your finger in the sleeve of your jumper will help. You are guaranteed faster speeds once you are used to this method. Similar games : International Track & Field 2 (PS1 + N64) Hypersports, Track'N'Field (Arcade) Daley Thompsons decathlon, Daley Thompsons Supertest (Spectrum) 9. Magic World Dizzy - Spectrum This game from the days where Codemasters were known for releasing £1.99 gems. In this you play an egg wearing a pair of boxing gloves. You have to go around picking up items, and using them to help save some of your fellow Yolk Folk from the Evil Wizard Zaks. This game was ...

Gens - A Megadrive emulator

Everything that starts with M ... This is the first in what I hope to have as a regular series, on Emulation. I shall be reviewing Emulators for a variety of different systems, as well as doing Emulation in general. As this is the Community Forum I realise these won't be paid opinions, but I wish to share my love and knowledge of these great pieces of software for others. Gens Win So what is an Emulator? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~ Emulators are pieces of software written by very talented people that harness the power of the PC to simulate the actions of hardware that other systems use. As a small note, emulators are available for a whole plethora of systems – basically any system over 3 years old has been emulated, including PS1 and the N64. The latest machine to have been emulated is the GameBoyAdvance. Due to the nature of how emulators' work they often require much a PC that is of a much higher specification than the original machine was. The chances are though that you are using a PC at the moment that can utilize Megadrive emulation. What is Gens? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Gens is a Sega Megadrive (known as Sega Genesis in the US) emulator for the PC. With this little program you can play 92% of Megadrive games perfectly, 5% with minor glitches and the remaining 3% are un-emulated as of yet. It can also emulate the Sega Mega-CD, at the moment the emulation of this device isn't perfected, though it is pretty close, and in a few months time no doubt it will be. At the moment though it will play ...

Jimmy Whites: Cueball World (PC) 01/02/2002

JUST PLAYING WITH MY BALLS....

Jimmy Whites: Cueball World (PC) Snooker balls that is. Jimmy Whites Cueball World is the latest installment in the popular series of Snooker games released by Awesome Developments; veteran coder Archer McLean's development team. A brief history lesson to begin with. When computers such as the Amiga ruled the (gaming) World, Jimmy Whites Whirlwind Snooker wowed everyone at the time with its 3D graphics, which although commonplace nowadays were a rarity then. This enabled snooker games to be taken to a much higher degree of realism. Many years on and the Amiga is all but a distant memory having been superceded by umpteen computers and consoles in recent years. Nowadays after one sequel to the original game that has appeared on numerous platforms, the Jimmy Whites series of games has ceased to wow. There were a number of points that needed to be addressed from the first game, these were: The first thing that needed to be refined from the original were the graphics, that was realized in stunning fashion with the release of the sequel to the original making the graphics just about as good as you could get on a computer. The second thing that needed improving was the variations of game involved; this was also done in the 2nd game in this series. The addition of Pool (8 ball and 9 ball) as well as a bonus game of darts meant that this aim was achieved. The third thing was that even though the ball physics in the original were excellent they still needed slightly refining, this was achieved ...

How to rate and comment 23/01/2002

It's not how you write, it's how you rate

How to rate and comment I have been moved to write this opinion having witnessed many petty feuds and squabbles on Ciao recently. Most of these feuds have been about rating, and how certain members rate. Ciao is supposed to be a site about writing opinions for use by the consumer. If the site keeps going the way it is, with nearly all users giving out VH's for non-VH opinions the site will suffer as a whole. If an opinion isn't worthy of a VH then don't give it one. If you give it one for sake of nicety then you are not only cheating the reviewer you are also cheating the consumer and yourself. Some people on the site seem to believe it is their god given right to be given VH's all of the time. As such feuds are often started with anyone who dares to give them less than what they consider to be their birthright. Ciao as a site suffers from users, both inexperienced and in many worrying cases very experienced people giving out VH ratings with gay abandon in a hope to bolster their own ratings. Let me make this clear, I don't hold grudges against anyone. I am someone who hates giving ratings that differ from others on the site. However increasingly I have been doing this. Some people have to be honest, if that means that I will get reported to Ciao abuse on a frequent basis that is fine. I have integrity and know that the way I rate is the proper way to rate. Here are my proposals if you feel someone is unfairly rating you: 1. First and foremost email the person in question and ...

Sony D-EJ 725 17/01/2002

The MUSIC sounds better with you...

Sony D-EJ 725 Sony D-EJ725 ~~~~~~~~~~~ I love music, and I love walking – so perhaps it's with an air of inevitability that one day I would like to merge the two pastimes and listen to music on the move. That day came and so I looked at my options, the options that presented themselves to me were: MP3 Player ~~~~~~~~~ I wanted something that wouldn't skip when I was walking at pace so I considered picking up an MP3 player. The low memory capacity, cost and battery life put me off considerably. So I thought perhaps an: MP3 playing CD Discman ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~ Would be more appropriate. I have a CD Recorder you see so I could burn MP3s onto a CD and listen to them on the move. The problem is the battery life, and the fact that these players because they are CD based rather than flash memory based like normal MP3 players made this an option I didn't want to choose. I then considered picking up a: Mini-disc Player ~~~~~~~~~~~~ But I have always found these to be quite costly both for the basic player and for the Mini-discs. Also there were for me concerns about battery life and the hassle of having to record anything I wanted to listen to onto Mini-disc before using it…. So at the end of the day I had a criteria, but couldn't find anything to fit it, the criteria was: ~Something that wouldn't skip when I was on the move~ ~Something that had a good battery life~ ~Something that didn't use a proprietary media such as Mini-disc~ ~Something that had ...
