David Brent: Life on the Road (Blu-ray) 01/04/2017

Now Brent's Just a Lost and Lonely Cowboy

David Brent: Life on the Road (Blu-ray) David Brent. A name many people will be familiar with if they've ever seen 'The Office' , the original and best UK version that is. In 'The Office' Brent was a lovable buffoon that everyone could relate to on some level and was a character that you'd love to hate. He was an idiot but was at the top of his own game that he played. Fast forward 13 years and Brent returns, with a bang... of a cork pop gun. Background Information Certificate 15 Running Time 95 Minutes approx Box Office Takings $5.51 Million Production Company Entertainment One/BBC Films Distributed By Entertainment One The film received a limited release in cinemas, with only Ireland, New Zealand, Australia and the United Kingdom receiving a theatrical release. There are the countries where 'The Office' was biggest so would have a wider appeal. Netflix has since bought the rights to all territories except those where the film received a theatrical release. There was no information for the budget of the film, but is probably is around $3-4 million (judging by the budget of the inbetweeners movie which is similar in scale). Cast and Characters *Ricky Gervais stars as David Brent the lovable buffoon we all hate to love. You may remember Brent's infamous dancing and his authoritative stupidity in 'The Office'. In this film, however, Gervais portrays Brent as a stereotypical man undergoing a mid-life crisis which adds to the tragedy of his stupidity. He is a completely different man to the beloved boss he ...

Zootropolis (Blu-ray) 01/09/2016

Imaginative, Revolutionary and Heartfelt- One of Disney's Finest!

Zootropolis (Blu-ray) Disney. The word springs to mind princesses, musicals and over-merchandising. Owning Pixar, Marvel and Lucas films, Disney are the Park Lane and Mayfair owners of recent years’ box office releases. One element of Disney’s films that is always consistent is the quality, whilst singing every 3 minutes isn’t for everyone, there is no doubt that the company know how to produce films that both parents and children alike will enjoy. Zootropolis is no exception. I have to admit, I saw this at the cinema during its theatrical release so this is the 2nd time I’ve seen it. I didn’t want to have to try and recall a film IÂ’d seen months ago to review it so watching it again would not only allow me to give a fresher take on the hit-animation but also allow me to give a more thoughtful, critical analysis of the film. Background Information Certificate PG Running Time 108 Minutes Budget $150 Million Box Office Takings $1.023 Billion Distributed By Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures Production Companies Walt Disney Pictures/Walt Disney Animation Studios Zootropolis, with a budget lower than recent Disney animations, is now 24th highest-grossing film of all time and the 4th highest animated film. It also debuted at No.1 in the home-video release charts which is no surprise after its box office success. Characters & Vocal Talents Zootropolis would be nothing without the insanely talented cast that lend their voices to really bring their well designed characters to life. I've ...

Grimsby (Blu-Ray) 18/07/2016

Despised by Critics -I had the last laugh & plenty along the way!

Grimsby (Blu-Ray) There aren't many comedies in recent years that I've properly enjoyed. There have been loads of films that I've found hilarious but aren't necessarily classified as comedies. However Sacha Baron Coen has been crowned the 'King of Comedies' for performances in 'Borat', 'The Dictator' and 'Bruno' . I really wanted to go and see this in the cinema however the film stopped showing by the time I could afford to do so. I picked this up yesterday at Sainsburys on the way home, ready to watch it as soon as I could friends over or have time to myself to watch it, I even bought the original theatrical poster for my room! I find that doing a comedy spy review is difficult because where I'd normally mention quotes or minor plot points for characters, I can't. The comedy genre means that any quotes will ruin the film and so may small hints at the plot, especially when most of the film of this film is how outrageous it is. Background Information Certificate 18 Running Time 83 minutes Budget $35 million Box Office Takings $25.2 million Distributed by Columbia Pictures Production Companies Big Talk Productions, Four By Two Films, LStar Capital, Village Roadshow Pictures, Working Title Films As is evident from the considerably smaller box office taking than the budget, the film surprisingly bombed despite Baron Coen's previous successes and renowned acclaim for his films such as borat which made over 20 times the budget at the box office. I think a part of this failure was critics ...

Foxcatcher (DVD) 21/08/2015

What does (the) Foxcatcher say?...

Foxcatcher (DVD) I was rather surprised to find this product as product of the week given that I entered it into ciao and never got around to suggesting it for product of the week which I normally to do as a matter of habit. I picked this film up along with a few others as a part of the 2 for £15 Sainsbury's deal which I now regret as most of those films can now be found for £6.99 in hmv. Background information This section includes everything from the running time to the story it was based upon and the cast and crew as a matter of interest before buying the movie: Certificate 15 Running Time 128 minutes Budget $24 million Box Office takings $15.9 million Distributed by Sony Pictures Classics Production Company Annapurna Pictures, Likely Story As you've seen it appears to be a bit of a box office bomb as not only did it not make its budget back, it also needs to double its budget to break-even but with worldwide DVD sales I'm sure it will make its money back, as well as streaming rights. Cast and Characters *Steve Carell as John Eleuthère du Pont gives the performance of his career in this role to say the least as he is made nearly unrecognisable which allows him to be taken more seriously, compared to his previous roles such as that in The Office US version. He was chosen in his role as the producers wanting someone surprising and wanted him to be unrecognisable and the resemblance to John Du Pont- a millionaire, philanthropist, and wrestling enthusiast- is uncanny. I was blown away ...

The Simpsons Season 15 (DVD) 28/07/2015

'Tis the fifteen season so watch it Mann

The Simpsons Season 15 (DVD) I've always loved the Simpsons. It's a programme which continues to be funny in its own simple way- most of the funny moments can be hard to spot so you'll have to have your pause button ready! It's currently shown on Channel 4 and Sky One in the UK. As I only have free-view it's only shown on Channel 4 which means that I tend to watch random episodes every day which doesn't tend to matter much but you could have different style sketches and voices day in, day out. I'd much rather have a DVD so I can chose when I feel like watching it and which episode tickles my fancy. Also on TV you can watch 2 episodes in an hour with breaks but if you take out the breaks and watch it on DVD you can watch 3 episodes per hour, working out saving you some of that wasted 'ad-break time'. A little bit of background information to get things going The Simpsons is an animated sitcom set in the fictional town of Springfield. The series was probably the first of its kind with many similar series (such as Family Guy and American Dad) soon to follow in its footsteps. The sitcom focuses on every day family life but exaggerates it in some extraordinary circumstances. It also parodies popular culture, society, being human as well as looking at 'what is takes to be American'. I think that the beauty in this sitcom lies when it is being normal, when the plots go too off track it ceases to become funny as a part of humour is relating to the situation. I'll comment on each episode and what moments I ...

Still Alice (DVD) 20/07/2015

All the critics love Alice, well acted Still Alice they say...

Still Alice (DVD) I was looking for a good film to watch a week ago to watch with a Dutch friend who was staying for only a week so on her last night staying with us we decided to go film shopping. We ventured into our local Sainsbury's to see this DVD along with Whiplash in the 2 for £15 section on new releases, I thought to snap up a bargain considering it was only just released that week. I then suggested this product, surprising it hasn't already been entered into the site, and in turn asked ciao for it to be product of the week (which I have not been acknowledged for). A little bit of background information... I always like to include a little section about the background of the film rather than just the substance of the film. From the cast and crew to the novel the film was based upon.... Certificate 12 Release Date September 8th 2015 and December 5th 2015 Running Time 97 minutes Budget $5 Million Box Office $41.8 Million Distributed by Sony Pictures Classics Production Company Killer films, Backup Media, Big Indie Pictures & BSM Studio Where have I seen this before? Still Alice was the first book written by Lisa Genova who is an American neuroscientist and novelist who specialises her novels around mental illnesses such as Alzheimers, autism, left neglect and Huntington's disease. I've not personally read the book however from reading about it online it is written from 3rd person perspective from Alice's point of view. It's worth noting that if you've not read it before seeing ...

American Beauty/American Psycho - Fall Out Boy 30/06/2015

Musical Beauty or Psycho? Let's not fall out over this

American Beauty/American Psycho - Fall Out Boy I've always been fascinated with the buzz surrounding Fall Out Boy, especially coming from my friendship group. The first I heard from them was their Top 5 hit 'My Songs know what you did in the dark' from a couple of years back. I added this to my wishlist upon release and waited for it to come down in price and it did so there's no time better than present hey? I ordered it on amazon with autorip and it arrived on time too, despite the new annoying policy of needing to spend £20 or more to qualify for free delivery.... I normally spend no more than a tenner. Anyway, it's time to face the music! Background information American Beauty/American Psycho is the band's 6th Studio album. I have decided to include some basic information about the album: Release Date 16th January 2015 Genre Pop Punk/Pop Rock Record Label Island/DCD2 Album Length 39:01 Which boys are falling out?! Fall Out boy has had members that come and go but now the band is made up of the following members: *Patrick Stump provides lead vocals and backing vocals as well as playing the guitar and the piano which goes to show how multi-talented he is. Not only does he have an iconic voice that is able to transit between softer verses into a more 'rock star' scream in some choruses and provide very passionate instrumentals. *Joe Trohman also plays the guitar and plays backing vocals and also happens to be lead and rhythm guitarist for the heavy metal group 'The Damned Things' which I hadn't even heard of until ...

The Magic Whip - Blur 13/06/2015

So you can have too many toppings on a Mr.Whippy?!

The Magic Whip - Blur I bought this album from Amazon after seeing that it has dropped down in price from my wishlist which contains many albums, films and games. This music isn't really my genre however but hearing how much of an impact they once had on British music and how well it performed on the charts I thought it must be worth investing my money in. Plus I walked into my local HMV and I was really drawn to the artwork, why not go home and make an impulse buy? Background Information For those of you who are interested in the concept of the album, the personnel behind it and perhaps some interesting facts you didn't know. If you don't need to know about this you're more than welcome to skip this section and scroll onto the information you are looking for in the review- which I should have included with a review this long! Release Date: 27th April 2015 Recorded in: Avon Studios-Hong Kong, Studio 13-London Album Length: 51:42 Record Label: Parlophone, Warner Bros Genre: Alternative Rock, Indie Rock 4 Letters, 4 members, who are Blur? Blur have been going for nearly 30 years now, on and off, but you'd be forgiven if you didn't know who they were. Truth be told, I'd heard of them prior to this purchase but didn't realise quite what kind of music they produced. I thought of included some interesting facts about the band and their success just to give a scale of their success, even though they are past their hay-day of the 90s: *They have a combined net worth of over $90,000,000 *They have ...

In The Lonely Hour - Sam Smith 08/02/2015

In The Speechless 45 minutes

In The Lonely Hour - Sam Smith Back in May I bought this album after seeing the album trailer on YouTube. It's fair to say that this was one of the most anticipated album of 2014 and comes close to one of my favourite albums of 2014. In fact I may even product a list of the best albums of each year and publish it if all goes to plan. I'm a big fan of a powerful, soulful voice but with someone who can write songs which are capable of conveying their voice. Background Information Released 26th May 2014 (17th June in the US) Genre Pop, Soul, R'n'B Label Capitol/Method Producer Jimmy Napes, Eg White, Steve Fitzmaurice When asked about the album's concept, Sam Smith said the following "My debut album is just a diary from a lonely 21-year-old. That's what it is. It was my way of talking about the only real issue in my life. I don't have that many sad things going on in my life and it was the only thing that was really affecting me last year: I fell in love with someone who didn't love me back, and it made me get into this head space of, 'Will I find a man to love? When will I find love? This album is my 'f**k off' to everyone and basically say, 'No, I have been in love with a man and, if anything, it was much more painful than your version', because I'm not getting what I want with a man and it's so close I can almost taste him.So, it's my way of defining what is love, and how unrequited love is just as painful, just as powerful, as what we call 'normal' love." I think that is what's great about this album, ...

What Are The Best And Worst Gifts For Xmas? 22/12/2014

Gifts under the tree, time to rejoice in the good that we see!

What Are The Best And Worst Gifts For Xmas? I love Christmas. It is a magical time of year. Gift giving and receiving has been a part of this tradition for many years however year on year people, especially children, expect to receive more, making Christmas a dreaded time of year for those with children. However I still enjoy watching the smiles on your beloved family members' faces when you hand them a gift that you have spent so long finding or perfecting. The Best Gifts The Best gifts are the thoughtful ones and they don't necessary have to be the most expensive ones. These gifts are the ones that people have spent a lot of effort making or the ones that show that people listen to you throughout the year. My Top 5 best gifts received (In no particular order) #An iPod Touch was a great present because I used it all the time and could do lots of things on it. It's a great present however I kind of feel bad knowing how much things like this cost so it is less enjoyable. However I leant this to be younger brother for an hour and it is now lost, it's been over a year... #A Pair of Vans Shoes were a great gift. They were fur coated keeping my feet warm in the winter. They were also bought on offer so I didn't feel so bad about taking money of 'Santa's' pocket. #A Portable DVD Player is a present I enjoyed (although now broken) as I love watching films. However it wasn't very robust, I didn't care at the time. I was only seven and these things were fairly new! #A Digital Camera, although only 7mb was a present I ...

Do They Know It's Christmas? - Band Aid 30 22/12/2014

Cure the World! Let them know someone's fighting for them...

Do They Know It's Christmas? - Band Aid 30 Apologies for the length of what is only a single review. This single wasn't just a release but a topical debate and covered intensively by the press and I thought to give you, readers, all the information you need know :) I like Christmas music, it can really get you into the spirit of all the festivities. I've bought a 'Now that's What I Call Christmas' album a couple of years back but it's been lost amongst various decorations and has yet to be found. I really like putting on a Christmas playlist behind the Christmas tree to add to the magic of the season. I was compiling another CD review when I though "I must get another one as Christmas is fast approaching". I then was reading through some chart news when I saw who was due to start in the new 'band aid' single which I completely forgot was celebrating its pearl (30 year) anniversary this year... the line up was exiting and so was the fact that Christmas is coming! Band Aid- The Concept It's been 30 years since the original release of the original Band-Aid single-'Do They Know It's Christmas?'. Originally released in 1984, the song featured huge artists of the time such as Phil Collins, George Michael and Sting. It originally set out to raise money for the Ethiopian famine back in the day': hence the lyric 'feed the world' and raised over £8 million pounds from the single alone, with VAT in place, which helped a lot in African countries experiencing famine and the single is amongst the biggest selling in the UK ...

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies 21/12/2014

A spectacular ending to a fantastic trilogy

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies I was very young when the Lord of the Rings trilogy was released but later on I managed to catch up with them and I can honestly say that I have never been able to find anything to top it. No fantasy series captured my imagination as much as them. It was then that I heard they were making a hobbit trilogy and I could not wait! I've read most of the book, it got to the point where I just forgot to finish it, ready to watch it at the cinema. I've watched the previous two films and I have the 1st film extended edition dvd which I re-watched in anticipation for this film.... on with the review! Basic Information Certification 12a Directed by Peter Jackson Cinema Release Date 12/12/2014 Running Time 144 mins [2h04] The Hobbit....did you say the hobbit?... Yes! This trilogy was based upon the world renowned book 'The Hobbit' which as sold over 100 million copies and has been translated into over 50 languages. It may have been over 75 years since the book was published but Tolkien's authentic, heart-warming writing style along with the magical, inventive universe of Middle-Earth that he created makes his books still popular amongst adults and children alike. I'm a massive fan of the book and often find myself 'googling' various characters that I'm interested in as well as other bits and pieces that get a mention such as the rings of power. Every single detail is on the Wikipedia page to think that Tolkien was an English professor and he created a world beyond belief, much like ...

The Blacklist Season 1 (DVD) 19/11/2014

Top of my list!

The Blacklist Season 1 (DVD) I love a good crime drama; I adore the suspense of them. I wasn’t completely won over by the trailer when I first saw it, it looked good but didn’t capture the essence of the show or ‘show’ that it was even a crime drama worth watching. It looked to me as if it set out to be some good, but not thrilling, FBI drama. I would compare this series to a cross between CSI and Homeland, it is thrilling each week (Like Homeland) but each episode has a different criminal (CSI) but also interlocks various on-going plots that aren't always evident in every episode but in most of them, giving the audience a chance to keep up a little. I paid a fair price for it, £17 on eBay- at the time [2 weeks ago] and I am happy with my purchase, as it so happened it arrived a day earlier than estimated which was the day I was ill so I watch 4 episodes that day and 4 each day since, I finished it in 6 days which I am a little ashamed of because I’ve finished it now :( It still has the ‘watch-ability factor’ to them as the plot can be a little complex at times , so second watch is necessary, that’s why getting the DVD is certainly worth it in my opinion Background information Languages : English, German Subtitles : English (Hard of Hearing), Dutch, English, German, Hindi, Turkish Running Time 15h01m approx. (Each episode 40-45 mins) Rating 15- due to strong violence bloody injury, moderate bad language Never trust a criminal… until you have to. For decades, ex-government agent Raymond ‘Red’ ...

Chapter One - Ella Henderson 22/10/2014

Ella's got it right the first time with this outstanding debut!

Chapter One - Ella Henderson I pre-ordered this item signed a few months before release, signed and it arrived the Friday before release. I wouldn’t normally jump to purchasing an album like this anymore but she’s the only act ever on the x-factor to give me Goosebumps whilst watching her perform and the only act (maybe with James Arthur) that you knew had originality as an artist and wasn’t just a mediocre singer. Despite her own material being different to what you would expect her to produce, it is still fantastic with a balance of songs. I would have liked her to go down more of the Adele root which she seemed to be doing on the X-factor but I see that she was only 16 then and hadn’t found out what she wanted to be. Since them she’s become more of a pop star with the best vocals I’ve possibly ever heard of in the industry, when you hear her songs, you know they are hers! Background information Ella who? Henderson began singing at the age of three and taught herself to play the piano a few years later. She began to put on shows for her family at Christmas and developed a special bond with her grandfather Bill, who encouraged her to pursue her love of music and song-writing. Her interest developed further at primary school, St Martin’s Preparatory School in Grimsby, and she subsequently decided to audition for a scholarship place at Tring Park School for the Performing Arts in Hertfordshire, which my cousin lives so near to now, she succeeded in gaining a scholarship and boarded at the school from ...

Has The Recent Success Of Ice Bucket Challenge Changed The Future Of Healthcare Fundraising? 27/09/2014

Doubt it will raise buckets-full in the long run

Has The Recent Success Of Ice Bucket Challenge Changed The Future Of Healthcare Fundraising? The ALS ice bucket challenge. A topic of many people’s debates during the summer, it’s gradually trickling away. I’m pretty much the target audience for this challenge, seeing as I’m a user of many platforms of social media (although I rarely do on it) and in my teens. I personally haven’t been nominated to do the challenge but seeing as I’ve seen so many people do it and been surrounding in the ‘ALS web’, I thought it only appropriate to give my views on how it will take charity to a whole other level. What is this ‘Ice Bucket Challenge? The Ice Bucket challenge is a challenge set to pour iced water over your head or donate money to charity. Then you nominate people, it is especially fun to see celebrities nominating each other to see their friends, who are quite often other celebrities you are a fan of. I don’t understand how it spread so quickly because I’m sure the first person who did it would only nominate 3 people and don’t tell me then that one of those 3 people had so many friends of friends that Su-bo was one of them! The challenge was really to raise awareness of MND (Motor Neurone Disease) so than money would come from the spread of people. YOU CAN DONATE BY TEXTING ICED55 £5 to 70070 , and online. Where does all this money go, and for what? “Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as "Lou Gehrig's Disease," is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. While there is not a cure or ...
