Logan (DVD) 03/01/2018

Logan - Film Review

Logan (DVD) 17 years, 9 films, 1 iconic character and 1 outstanding actor. I think it’s safe to say that Hugh Jackman did the character of Wolverine/Logan justice in ways people could have never have imagined. In 2017, we finally received the Wolverine that fans, including myself, were waiting for ever since the first appearance of this character in X-Men (2000, Dir: Bryan Singer). 17 years later, we finally get the Wolverine we deserve. James Mangold and Hugh Jackman return to the big screen with style with one of, if not the best, superhero film of the year, Logan. CAST Hugh Jackman – Logan Patrick Stewart – Charles Xavier Dafne Keen – Laura / X-23 Boyd Holbrook – Pierce Stephen Merchant – Caliban Richard E Grant – Dr Rice Eriq La Salle – Will Munson STORY In the near future, an old and weary Logan (Hugh Jackman) makes his living as a chauffeur somewhere on the Mexican border, taking on the duty of looking after the ailing Professor X (Patrick Stewart) who is hidden away from the diminished mutant population. However, their attempts to hide from the world are threatened when a young mutant (Dafne Keen) arrives seeking the help of Logan, which leads them all on a wild run from the dark forces pursuing this young mutant. What follows is a series of action packed, intense and thrilling series of events that keep you thoroughly entertained throughout. MY VIEW Phenomenal. That’s the only word that comes to mind when thinking of Logan. I remember when they announced the story and ...

The Nice Guys (DVD) 19/04/2017

The Nice Guys - Film Review

The Nice Guys (DVD) Shane Black returns to the big screen with another action comedy starring Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling. An odd starring duo in my opinion but work so well together and together, the trio are able to deliver a fun and entertaining film sure to keep you laughing throughout. The Nice Guys is actually a nice surprise. CAST Russell Crowe – Jackson Healy Ryan Gosling – Holland March Angourie Rice – Holly March Matt Bomer – John Boy Margret Qualley – Amelia Kuttner Yaya DaCosta – Tally Lois Smith – Mrs Glenn Murielle Telio – Misty Mountains STORY Set in 1977 Los Angeles, Holland March, private investigator, (Ryan Gosling) is hired to investigate the death of porn star Misty Mountains (Murielle Telio). His investigation leads to a lady named Amelia (Margret Qualley) who becomes distressed with Hollands constant questioning. Enter Jackson Healy (Russell Crowe), a short fused and impatient private eye hired by Amelia to keep Holland away. But when Amelia disappears, it becomes clear that Holland was not the only person looking for her. The 2 private eyes band together to uncover the reason behind the death of Misty Mountains and track down Amelia to find out. Accompanied by Hollands foul mouthed daughter, Holly, (Anguorie Rice) the trio encounter strippers, hitmen and goons to get to the bottom of this case. MY VIEW I’m going to be honest I did not like the look of this film from the poster. It looked like some B movie I wouldn’t be interested in so I didn’t bother ...

Lights Out - Film Review

Lights Out (DVD) David F. Sandberg brings to the big screen, what first started out as a small scale short film by a few film students. Produced by James Wan, director of The Conjuring, it was one of the most anticipated films of 2016. Independence Day (DVD) 15/11/2016

Independence Day- Film Review

Independence Day (DVD) Another alien film. I know what you’re thinking. With sci-films dominating the box office back in the 90’s Roland Emmerich directed and presented one of his own that became an instant alien classic still adored today. Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman starred along one another in Independence Day. The film revolves around different people, firstly the President (Bill Pullman), a scientist turned cable technician David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum) and Captain Steven Hiller (Will Smith). Just 2 days before American Independence day, a strange ship, first thought to just be meteors, lands on earth and threatens to invade and destroy it. David is able to predict the different point of the earth that will be attacked by the aliens and rushes to tell the president this to prevent any catastrophe from taking place. But as the story unfolds and a series of plans go wrong, it’s up to David and the military including Captain Steven Hiller (Will Smith) who must all work together in order to save the planet and fight for their independence. This was one of those films that I had heard a lot about of but never go the chance to watch until recently and I was honestly kicking myself for not watching it earlier. Surprisingly Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum work really well together and the humor that the 2 of them are able to create is brilliant and keeps us laughing as well as entertained throughout the film. The iconic and hilarious scene where Will Smith punches the alien is perfect ...

With a star studded cast of Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke and Vincent D’Onofrio amongst many other, The Magnificent Seven is a brilliant film by the very impressive Fuqua and meets every expectation. Cast Denzel Washington – Sam Chisolm Chris Pratt – Josh Faraday Ethan Hawke – Goodnight Robicheaux Vincent D’Onofrio – Jack Horne Byung-hun Lee – Billy Rocks Manuel Garcia-Rulfo – Vasquez Martin Sensmeier – Red Harvest Haley Bennet – Emma Cullen Peter Sarsgaard – Bartholomew Bogue The story follows bounty hunter Sam Chisolm (Denzel Washington) catching bad guys for a living, his work is recognised by Rose Creek resident Emma Cullen (Haley Bennet) who seeks his help to re-claim her home town, Rose Creek, from the infamous bandit, Bartholomew Bogue, (Peter Sarsgaard). The Hateful Eight (DVD) 26/05/2016

The Hateful Eight- Film Review

The Hateful Eight (DVD) Quentin Tarantino is most definitely one of the best directors of this generation and possibly of all time and he has astounded us all again with his 8th film, The Hateful Eight, starring his favorite stars Samuel L Jackson, Kurt Russell, Tim Roth and Michael Madsen. The film follows a series of characters, Major Marquis Warren (Samuel L Jackson), John Ruth (Kurt Russell), Oswaldo Mobray (Tim Roth), Joe Gage (Michael Madsen) and Daisy Domergue (Jennifer Jason Leigh), all trapped in a cabin in Wyoming in the middle of a blizzard. John Ruth is taking Daisy Domergue to be hanged in Red Rock as she is wanted for murder. Whilst they are trapped her Ruth becomes very paranoid as he believes that someone in the cabin is not who they say they are and wants to find them and expose them immediately. What follows is a series of nail-biting, entertaining and thrilling ride that you won't want to end. Whenever I hear about Tarantino making a new film it always gets me pumped up and excited as I never know what to expect. Here again is a great example of his work and hasn't manage to fail fans or expectations, he has actually exceeded them. The strong and interesting narrative he made himself is very intriguing and interesting as a narrative on its own and then with the help of his genius and his star studded cast it just makes it perfect. Lets be honest, Samuel L Jackson makes everything great and is one of my all time favorite actors. From Pulp Fiction to Jackie Brown, he manages to ...

Inside Out (DVD) 19/04/2016

Inside Out- Film Review

Inside Out (DVD) Disney and Pixar team up with directors Pete Docter and Ronnie Del Carmen to bring us another heart-warming and entertaining animated film, Inside Out is a must see of 2015 and could possibly be or become one of Disney’s best films to date. Inside Out follows characters Riley (Kaitlyn Dias) and her parents (voiced by Diane Lane and Kyle MacLachlan), as they move houses and into San Francisco and how her emotions Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black) and Disgust (Mindy Kalling) adjust to this new lifestyle and decide how to tackle this new city, new place and new life. What follows is a series of hilarious, emotional and highly entertaining series of events that are sure to keep you laughing and wanting more at the end. The choice for voices in this film was perfect in my opinion. Amy Poehler is able to deliver the energetic and heart-warming voice that the character of joy deserves and gives the audience someone to love straight away as soon as she is introduced. Fear and Anger are 2 of the funniest characters in this film and it is safe to say they are responsible for most of the humour in the film. Bill Hader and Lewis Black give these characters life with their voices and again make them all the more loveable and entertaining when watching on screen. Sadness, probably my least favourite character, is also good in the film but ends up leaving the audience with a not-so-positive vibe after she has been onscreen but Phyllis ...

Deadpool (DVD) 14/04/2016

Deadpool- Film Review

Deadpool (DVD) Tim Miller and the guy with the worst superhero luck ever, Ryan Reynolds, actually team up this time and make one of the best superhero films ever made. Deadpool is a hilarious, action packed and R-rated (15+) movie you won’t want to miss, and Reynolds actually doesn’t mess this one up. The story follows mercenary Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds), making money from doing the dirty work for others whilst still being the rude comedic guy that he is and then comes across the female version of him, Vanessa (Morena Baccarin). They both instantly click and fall in love and have the perfect life until it gets taken away from them when Wade is diagnosed with cancer in his liver and lungs. Unable to burden Vanessa with this guilt and sadness he leaves and takes the offer of a man who says he can cure him and turn him into a superhero, but only causes him pain and suffering and destroys his face. But giving him accelerated healing powers, he decides to track down the man who ruined his life and take his revenge. What follows is a series of hilarious, rude, gory and action packed sequences that will leave you wanting more at the end. Much to my surprise Ryan Reynolds has finally done a good job in a superhero role and movie that he is the lead and main star in. After Green Lantern I really wasn’t expecting much from this film but it surprised and shocked me to my core. It was entertaining and hilarious throughout and I cannot wait for the sequel. Reynolds's performance of this character ...

Creed (DVD) 08/04/2016

Creed- Film Review

Creed (DVD) Ryan Coogler delivers a surprisingly entertaining and sort of a 'new age rocky' for today's generation and is able to successfully create this fresh take on the Rocky saga, starring Michael B Jordan and of course the great Sylvester Stallone. This film is a must see. The film takes a new and fresh turn and follows the life of Adonis Creed (Michael B Jordan), son of Apollo Creed struggling to find a place in the world but has a strong passion for boxing and is as mean and aggressive on the streets. Wanting to become a professional boxer himself he moves away from home to Philadelphia to pursue his dream. Here he meets Rocky (Sylvester Stallone), who he immediately gets along with well talking about his father Apollo. Rocky decides to take Adonis under his wing to train him, himself to become the boxer he wants to be, but as Adonis struggles to make it in the industry as people thinks he is just using his father name to make it, he makes a inspirational journey throughout the film to make his mark, become a boxer to show that his legacy is more than just a name. This film was actually pleasant surprise to me when i went to see it as i wasn't expecting much as i grew up watching and being inspired by the original rocky films and loved them so when i heard they were making a spin-off i wasn't expecting much. However this fresh spin on the story, this fresh new story of a new character in the same world actually worked and made sense and gave young audiences a sort of new age ...

Southpaw (DVD) 23/02/2016

Southpaw- Film Review

Southpaw (DVD) The director of ‘Training Day’ and ‘Shooter’, Antoine Fuqua returns to the box office with this outstanding boxing epic that is Southpaw starring the great and adaptable to any role Jake Gyllenhaal, with Rachel McAdams, Forest Whitaker, Naomi Harris and Curtis '50 Cent' Jackson. This was in my opinion one of the best sports films and overall film released in 2015 and deserves to win many awards. The film revolves around the great Billy Hope (Jake Gyllenhaal), a great boxer in his prime winning every fight that comes to him with his beautiful wife by his side, Maureen Hope (Rachel McAdams) and his daughter Leila Hope (Oona Laurence). Together they have the perfect family and the perfect life. But as tragedy strikes because of hopes uncontrollable anger he loses his wife tragically and begins to fall into depression and ends up losing everything including his daughter. Once the question comes up about the custody of his daughter he decides to get his life back with the help of trainer Tick Wills (Forest Whitaker), whilst his daughter stays with social worker, determined to win the fight as well as his life and daughters love back. First off I need to say that this is probably Jake Gyllenhaal’s best performance yet and by far my favourite film of 2015, the way he has been able to adapt into this role both physically and mentally is outstanding. The drama, action and emotions in the film are perfect, and feels like you’re watching a true story on screen, that is how ...

Straight Outta Compton (2015) (DVD) F Gary Gray directs 2015's biggest film, Straight Outta Compton, which illustrates the lives of the members of the worlds most controversial rap group N.W.A. With a superb cast consisting of O'Shea Jackson Jr, Corey Hawkins and Jason Mitchell this film is outstanding. Gray was one the the first choices by rappers turned actors Dr Dre and Ice Cube who wanted this film to happen for a long time but wanted the right cast and the right director which they found and delivered to the big screen shocking and wowing audiences worldwide. Story The film follows a group of friends, Andre Young/Dr Dre, O'Shea Jackson/Ice Cube, Eric Wright/Eazy E, Antoine Carraby/DJ Yella and Lorenzo Patterson/M.C Ren, in mid 1980's America growing up and living in Compton they all see and suffer the hatred and racism of the police everyday. American Sniper (Blu-ray) 14/12/2015

American Sniper- Film review

American Sniper (Blu-ray) Clint Eastwood has outdone himself, delivering this huge epic blockbuster that is American Sniper starring the great Bradley Cooper, portraying and telling the true yet unfortunate story of american hero, Chris Kyle. With supporting actors such as Sienna Miller and Ben Reed, this film is simply breathtaking. The film tells the story of the most lethal sniper in American History, Chris Kyle, and his journey through life, from his dream to become a cowboy to him joining the Navy S.E.A.L's to make a difference to and for his country and he becomes the legend he is remembered as today. But when he returns home from war, events unfold showing if war has really left him or stuck with him and the impacts it has on his life and family, with a shocking and unfortunate climax of this hero. Bradley Cooper's portrayal of Chris Kyle is simply stunning, in my opinion it is one of his best roles yet and is definitely an award winning performance. It is just so visually stunning and how he has been able to adapt things like his speech and mannerisms to mimic the Texan man himself is just amazing. Representing real life hero's and role models in movies is a very difficult task and to do this as perfectly and accurately as Cooper's performance is amazing, satisfying and entertaining, as i believe this is a very difficult task to do and if the correct skills and techniques are not used the end result can be a poor performance and job. As well as Cooper, Sienna Miller, playing Taya Kyle, his ...

Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation- Film Review

Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation (DVD) Christopher McQuarrie joins Tom Cruise again in the huge action packed blockbuster of the infamous Mission Impossible series, Rogue Nation is the perfect action thriller film of this summer. Tom Cruise reprises his role of Ethan Hunt, part of the now disgraced IMF along with his co-workers William Brandt (Jeremy Renner) and Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg). Following on from the previous film it shows Hunt after a syndicate, a terrorist, an anti-IMF trained to do exactly what the IMF do but using it to terrorize and destroy the world. Hunt faces his most dangerous, impossible and challenging task yet for which he uses the help of his team to bring this ghost, this syndicate down who no one else believes they exist so Hunt must go in the shadows behind the CIA's back to bring them down. What follows is a series of action packed, thrilling and suspenseful scenes and moments in the film that will keep you at the edge of your seat, cheering and wanting more at the end of this film. In my opinion this was the best film of summer, you've got the great, talented Tom Cruise along with huge names such as Simon Pegg, Jeremy Renner, and Ving Rhames in an action packed movie that you will not want to end. I was thoroughly entertained throughout and i think its safe to say there was never a dull moment in the film. With the film having a rating of a 12A, ...
