Will Hay - Oh Mr Porter (DVD) 15/08/2009

Classic Humour.

Will Hay - Oh Mr Porter (DVD) OH MR PORTER = A wonderfully quaint old film. Made in a bygone era for a more caring audience. The enigmatic Will Hay stars with his 2 long standing cohorts Moore Marriott and Graham Moffatt. Here we see them in charge of a railway station bringing their usual brand of chaos and hilarity. Will has had every type of job on the railway and has been a disaster at all of them but now thanks to his sister he is given a promotion!. He is shipped to an out of the way, run down and forgotten station by the name of Buggleskelly. Here Will meets up with Jeremiah Harbottle and Albert Brown and soon all three of them are getting drunk, having punch ups eating customer’s piglets for breakfast oh and getting involved with gun running. There is a tale about 1 eyed Joe the ghost who haunts the railway line and the gun runners use this to smuggle guns. You can easily guess how this turns out; films from this era always had happy endings. However it’s how you get to that ending that sets a film apart from its contempories. And this film really is a cut above. The jokes are none stop, the slapstick well timed and the ending, ok, expected. Completely inoffensive and kids could watch it comfortably. This was apparently Wills favourite film and it shows. A deliciously nostalgic film that will not disappoint. . DVD Info; No extras, only chapter selection with this single DVD. The picture and sound quality are better than most film from this time.

Rising Damp: Series 3 15/08/2009

Ooh Miss Jones.

Rising Damp: Series 3 Rising Damp 3. = Rising Damp was a huge success for Eric Chappell was first shown in 1974 and made overnight stars of the cast. Starring RIGSBY - Leonard Rossiter. ALAN - Richard Beckinsale. PHILIP - Don Warrington. Miss JONES - Frances de la Tour. Rather sadly Richard Beckinsale died aged I believe 29 of a heart attack. 'We was robbed' as the saying goes. He would have gone on to even greater things I am sure. This single DVD contains all 7 episodes from the Third series. Series Three. = Episode 1 - That's My Boy. Episode 2. - Stage Struck. Episode 3. - Clunk Click. Episode 4. - The Good Samaritan. Episode 5. - Fawcett's Python. Episode 6 - The Cocktail Hour. Episode 7 - Suddenly at Home. Who can forget the barmy Rigsby, the Dopey Miss Jones, the insecure Alan and the confident, if not always truthful, Philip. Here we follow the first series where their characters are formed and the premise for the series is layed down. It really is one of those iconic comedies that will stand the test of time. Partly for the writing but in my opinion in main to the comic genius of Leonard Rossiter. His face always said it all. This DVD is very funny and worth the money, sure the shows are endlessly repeated but its always nice to have your own piece of comedic nostalgia in your collection. Very funny even in todays pc world. Summary: TIMELESSLY FUNNY

Laurel And Hardy - No. 4 - Ollie And Matrimony - Classic Shorts (DVD) 10/08/2009

Another fine mess !

Laurel And Hardy - No. 4 - Ollie And Matrimony - Classic Shorts (DVD) Laurel & Hardy in Ollie and Matrimony shorts. --------------- --------------- --------------- ------ A single DVD containing 4 films, all of which are very enjoyable to watch. All 4 films come in Black/White and a colourised version. Beau Hunks ------------- The boys join the foreign legion and soon run foul of the 'commandante' and of the real legion hardmen. They of course end up saving the day when the riffs attack. Our Wife ---------- Ollie and his fiance try to elope with Stans help, things can only go from bad too worse and they "certainly do Stanley". Helpmates ------------ Stan is summoned to help Ollie tidy his house before Ollies wife returns from visiting her mother. Stan ends up blowing the house literally to bits. Fantastic short this one. Me and my Pal --------------- - Stan is Ollies 'best man' but ends up wrecking the wedding and splitting up Ollie and his intended. All 4 films are the boys at their best it shows them in their very early days. The boys slip, slide and slap their way through these features and follow their usual plot lines. 'If it's not broke don't fix it' is an old motto and certainly in Laurel and Hardys case their style and brand of humour was so good it never changed. They are classics and timeless, with no chance of offence from the guys as they smash, fight and wreck everything in site. The pretend violence seems to escalate to unbelievable proportions until the inevitable explosion. Picked this up for £1 ...

Total Recall (DVD) 05/08/2009

He'll be back !!

Total Recall (DVD) Total Recall. = Douglas Quaid (Arnold Schwarzenegger) is really confused. Has he been to Mars or is it all a dream. Well Dougs about to find out and its going to be explosive. He has a beautiful wife a lovely home and a decent job but something’s not right and Doug won’t let it rest. He visits ‘Total Recall’ where they can implant dreams for you but what they find in Dougs head leaves them all terrified. Soon Doug finds himself fighting for his life against former friends and new allies, as they all want him dead…or do they? The journey will finally take him to Mars itself for the superb conclusion to a great film. This film has more twists and turns than you can imagine but all are very easy to follow, except one. The special effects where for their day quite something if a little dated now but the visual sights that Mars throws up really are something to see and enjoy. The mutant costumes are by today’s standards a little twee. No real music to speak of but the dialog is well written and the plot races along at break neck pace. This is a must see film and I heartily recommend it. Easily watchable over and again. Well you get quite a bundle with this DVD package, Language English Subtitles: Dutch, English, German, Portuguese, Spanish, Turkish Classification: 18 Movie Trailer Teaser Trailer Making of Total Recall Featurette .

The Thing (HD-DVD) 31/07/2009

SCARY THING THIS !

The Thing (HD-DVD) The Thing @ Blu Ray. In a remote antarctic research station the researchers have found an alien creature frozen solid buried in the ice. They estimate it has been there for 100,000 years and so dig it out an Put in an ante room for later examination. However the creature defrosts, come alive and then starts killing the lonely researchers. t first they are unaware that it is picking them of but it later comes to light that it can absorb that person and produce an exact duplicate of the victim. When this is discovered they do not know who is real and who is alien. It is nearly impossible to kill and only fire makes it afraid. Kurt Russel stars as our hero and it is he who takes the fight to the alien creature. some of the scenes are really chilling, no pun intended, the dog transforming is gruesome. the man whos chest splits open is horrible and the ending was a real surprise. A very good ending! there is no real soundtrack to speak of and the scenery is just cabins and ice but the story and the acting and the incredible special effects sell the movie completely. one of my all time favorite movies. Watch this film if you dare, you'll be glad you did. Highly recommended. The Blu Ray: = Video info: You get a 2.39:1 Image which is very sharp and well-defined, which is achieved because this copy was taken from quoting the DVD pamphlet "A crisper master copy". Unlike some newer movies such as AVP etc, the blacks are deep and again crisp rather ...

Robot Monster 31/07/2009

R.O.B.O.T Monster

Robot Monster Robot Monster. = I recently watched Plan 9 from outer space and called it the worst movie ever, I now stand corrected this is a shockingly awful film. The most unbelievably bad film in existence. The robot monster looks like a gorilla in a deep sea diving helmet and it has been sent to clear a way for the Earth invasion by its masters. Then the robot deep sea diving gorilla falls for the leading lady and becomes confused! He decides that humans are not all that bad and starts to fight for us with his ‘weapons’ and his masters are hoisted on their own petard. And that is the good side of the plot! We are treated to such blunders as hands in shot, very poor space ship models and the worst acting I have ever witnessed. Watch this film if you really want a laugh out loud time. It will leave you shaken but not stirred. Not sure whether to recommend this film or not?

The Colour Of Magic (DVD) 30/07/2009

Made me feel blu

The Colour Of Magic (DVD) The Colour of Magic. = As a reader of Terry Pratchett's I went into this film with reservations, the film never lives up to the book. Here however it comes pretty close to the replication of the story. This probably had some thing to do with Terry being heavily involved in the movie making process. The film follows Rincewind and Twoflower who through chance and dumb luck find themselves on a wonderful and frightening adventure across the Discworld. It will take them right to the edge of their world and ..... well watch the film and see. Rincewind; He has been expelled from the unseen University for failing to reach level 1 of 8 levels in the entire 40 years studying there! Twoflower; He is an innocent tourist who seems protected from harm by ignorance and fate. Oh and he has a body guard in the shape of a walking fighting trunk. Trunk; Made from sapient pear wood the Trunk is very bad tempered and will fight anyone and anything it takes a dislike too, luckily it likes Twoflower and guards him at every opportunity. A very colourful and child friendly film that kids will love. The plot stays firmly true to the book and the comedy heavily sprinkled throughout the film is superb. There is a running narration throughout the film which can be and is annoying at times. the acting from David Jason and Sean Astin is very enjoyable but Tim Curry as the bad guy is not in the least menacing. Also starring is Jeremy irons who does give afar more ...

Gimme, Gimme, Gimme - Series 2 - Complete (DVD) 23/07/2009

GIMME MORE?

Gimme, Gimme, Gimme - Series 2 - Complete (DVD) Gimme, Gimme,Gimme series 2 = This is one of those shows, once seen never forgotten. And sometimes not for the right reasons. This show could really be described as a ‘Marmite’ show. Either you get it and love it or you will find it awful. It stars Kathy Burke as Linda James Dreyfus as Tom Rosalind Knight as Beryl Brian Bovell as Jez Beth Goddard as Suze A very basic sitcom with Linda sharing a flat with Tom. Someone she at once loves and hates. Linda is vulgarity personified and she thinks she is simply the most beautiful creature to have walked the Earth. Tom is a gay struggling actor who has had a few bit parts but otherwise seems on the edge of a nervous breakdown, perhaps living with Linda is not such a good idea. Then there is Beryl their landlady and one time ‘lady of the night’, she doesn’t feature as much as she could have, but when she talks her one liners and gross. Jez lives with Suze and they are the perfect couple, square as anything and Linda hates them. But underneath see fantasises about Jez,,, so does Tom! The whole series only consisted of 3 series and a one off comic relief special. Series 2: 2000 7. Millennium special: 1999 8. Teacher's Pet 9. Stiff 10. Prison Visitor 11. Dirty 30 12. Glad to be Gay? 13. Sofa Man Very rude and leaves nothing to the imagination, innuendo taken to the extreme. Hilariously funny at times and at others sad. Linda really had a terrible life, if she is to be believed! Apparently ...

Channel 4 - Father Ted 21/07/2009

Ah go on go on go on.........

Channel 4 - Father Ted Father Ted = The Series is about 3 priests and their housekeeper. They all live in a decrepit house on Craggy Island. Each episode involves crazy, hilarious and out right barmy situations that happen to them and also that they initiate and end up being caught up in the middle of an insanity tornado. Father Ted has been banned to this out of the way parochial house because of his shady past. Which involved some missing money. Father Dougal McGuire is the innocent and thick as 2 short planks trainee priest. Father Jack Hackett is a heavy drinker and womaniser, much like a normal priest then? Mrs Doyle is their tea obsessed house keeper who also has a fetish for making millions of sandwiches. The Program lasted for three series ~Opinions~ Seeing and hearing three priest act and swear this way was just hilarious. The writing was superb and the one liners and completely barmy plots that rolled out each week will last the test of time. Even the visiting priests who came to stay on craggy island or the priests the Ted and Dougal came across where completely off their heads. Some drunk on power and some just drunk. Then there was the inhabitants of the island from the sandwich obsessed house keeper to the serial killer, with 'I shot J'R on his t shirt. The occasional celeb dropping in also added to the mayhem and general hilarity. By the third and final series pretty much all avenues had been explored and the premature death of Dermot John Morgan Alias ...

Laurel And Hardy - No. 10 - Snow! - Classic Shorts (DVD) 19/07/2009

Laurel and Hardy out in the Snow.

Laurel And Hardy - No. 10 - Snow! - Classic Shorts (DVD) Laurel & Hardy in Snow and Other Shorts. --------------- --------------- --------------- ------ A single DVD containing 4 films, all of which are very enjoyable to watch. All 4 films come in Black/White and a colourised version. Laughing Gravy --------------- ---- Laughing Gravy is the name of Stan and Ollie’s dog that they refuse to leave out in the snow but soon the dog is tucked up in bed and Ollie is out in the snow. Be Big -------- As soon as I saw the clip with Stan trying to help Ollie put on his riding boots it took me back. It turns out it is actually Stan’s tiny boots that Ollie is trying to squeeze into. The Fixer-Uppers --------------- ------ The boys are hired as gigolos to make husbands jealous, but then the shotguns come out. Slipping Wives --------------- --- Similar to the above film, Stan is hired to make a husband jealous but with disastrous results. All 4 films are the boys at their best except 'Slipping Wives' which is a silent movie and to be honest not too good it being from their very early days. The boys slip, slide and slap their way through these features and follow their usual plot lines. 'If it's not broke don't fix it' is an old motto and certainly in Laurel and Hardys case their style and brand of humour was so good it never changed. Picked this up for £1 and it does give great value. DVD features: --------------- --- Black and white and some colourisation. Chapter selection and subtitles only. Weird ...

Blackadder - Series 3 - Blackadder The Third (DVD) 12/07/2009

Black adder the Third.

Blackadder - Series 3 - Blackadder The Third (DVD) Black Adder. Used to love this and so when I had a chance of adding it to my collection I bought it up straight away. Rowan Atkinson is simply superb here and I hope you get a sense of my enjoyment from the following review of the first series Black Adder ran for 4 series but this review is about just the Third. The 3rd series is set in 18th Century and Blackadder is a butler to the prince regent George. Baldrick is his usual dopey self. Series 3: 1. Dish & Dishonesty 2. Ink & Incapability 3. Nob & Nobility 4. Sense & Senility 5. Amy & Amiability 6. Duel & Duality The combined writing skills of Curtis, Ben Elton and Rowan Atkinson is simply sensational. The comedy and witty lines come thick and fast. It is one of those series you can watch again simply to catch some of the many jokes that you missed on the first watching. The pairing of Rowan Atkinson and Tony Robinson was a masterly stroke of genius. Who can forget Baldricks catchphrase, 'I have a cunning Plan, which was anything but cunning. The DVD is worth the money, although it has little extras, Subtitles, chapter selection and some small back ground filling to the series. Recommended. Summary: Very much worth your cash.

Up In The World (DVD) 10/07/2009

Up Up and Away !

Up In The World (DVD) UP IN THE WORLD. One of the funniest films he ever made. Norman is a window cleaner who has the unenviable job of cleaning hundreds of windows at a huge manor house. While he is there he makes an enemy of the estate manager who takes a grave dislike to Norman. Norman makes friends with the heir to the estate, a young lad who persuades Norman to take him to a local night club. Wherein the lad gets kidnapped and Norman gets blamed, from here on in the film things really go crazy. This film really is a cracker. The trips and falls that became his trade marks are all here. He always managed to give that poor me, down trodden look to his films but then he always won out in the end. We are unfortunately treated to a song along the way but it is only the once. Had this DVD a long while and to be honest not sure if you should buy this, probably best to tape it off of the TV. DVD Features: Subtitles and chapter selection only.

Drowning World - Alan Dean Foster 03/07/2009

Hope you can Swim?

Drowning World - Alan Dean Foster Drowning world. = I decided to read this after reading a review written here. And yes this is a very good read, not that I would read it again but it was time well spent. You are taken on an adventure on the alien world of Fluva. A planet where it is virtually always constantly raining. Here the have 50 words for rain! You are taken through the watery world in the company of three unlikely companions. One is a warrior native to the planet, one an outsider despised by the warrior caste and the other is the human they are sent to rescue from the deep watery forests, where he has crashed. Along the way they will become friends, fight alien invaders and battle the flora and fauna for their very lives. The descriptive talent here of Mr Foster are really very good and often the reader is left with a creeping dread of the horrible creature or plant that he has dreamed up. The constant rain and watery peril the companions find themselves in is also extremely well written. I would read another one of his books but would take my time picking the right one. This was a stand alone book but was clearly part of a series and some references to other themes and planets are lost if you have not read others in the series, well they where on me. Recommended to read on the beach or on the plane, nothing too heavy and can be picked up and put down quite easily.

Chorlton And The Wheelies - Series 1 (DVD) 03/07/2009

The Happiness Dragon.

Chorlton And The Wheelies - Series 1 (DVD) CHORLTON AND THE WHEELIES SERIES 1 = Recently watched this with my kids and it brought back quite a few memories. Chorlton is a happiness dragon and one day he wakes up or rather is hatched in Wheelie world. From that point on he brings light to darkness and happiness to all who meet him. He finds the wheelie people being terrorised by Fenella an evil and frankly hapless witch. She and her minions try every trick and spell in the book to thwart Chorlton and his new wheelie friends. But Chorlton always prevails over all of her evil plans. You follow his adventure through 13 episodes on this DVD and kids today would love it, Guaranteed. If Chorlton had been created today the spin off in merchandise would have earned quite a bit with characters such as, Chorton himself, his friends… Zoomer, King Otto and Queen Doris, and Jenny. Equally lucrative would have been the evil ones, Fenella and her cohorts, Claptrap, O'reilly, the toadies and the spikers. Not to mention a huge pal tea pot, Spout hall. The DVD contains all 13 episodes from the first series, Episodes are:- 1.Happiness Is Hatched 2.Happiness Is Dragon-Shaped 3.Chorlton Says It with Flowers 4.The Lost Wheelie 5.Chorlton and the Crime Wave 6.Chorlton Gets His Wheels 7.The Great Drought 8.The Wheel Hockey Derby 9.Many Happy Returns 10.The Dancing Lesson 11.The Day of the Grand Race 12.When the Band Played on and on 13.Chorlton's Gift of Happiness Sound and picture quality is very ...
