A Scanner Darkly (DVD) 21/12/2007

A Scanner Darkly

A Scanner Darkly (DVD) "A Scanner Darkly" is based on the novel by Philip K Dick. Richard Linklater's film stars Keanu Reeves as undercover narcotics policeman; Bob Arctor. This is an interesting film but it didn't really move me deeply. There was some good acting but the story line was simply not exceptional. On deep reflection it is not a film that I would recommend. But if you want to watch it do so at your own risk. 1 hour forty mins Rating (15) The Product details The Actors: Rory Cochrane, Robert Downey Jr., Mitch Baker, Keanu Reeves, Sean Allen (II) Directors: Richard Linklater Format: PAL, Widescreen Language English Region: Region 2 ( DVD formats.) Brasilia 12/12/2007

Brasilia

Brasilia Brasília, the capital of Brazil, was built on a gigantic scale on the Central Brazilian Plateau, a large area which covers a few States in central Brazil. It is part of the federal district so not officially part of any state but geographically it lies within the state of Goiania. Brasilia is a modern city. At the time of construction full license was given to the planners and architects to build large, innovative buildings and to fully use their freedom of spirit and imagination. Another purpose was to open up the interior of the country to development. This is one reason why the central government was moved there. I would recommend that you visit this city if you get the chance. You can travel there by bus or plane.

Tell Me No Lies: Investigative Journalism and its Triumphs - John Pilger (Editor) 12/09/2007

Tell Me No Lies

Tell Me No Lies: Investigative Journalism and its Triumphs - John Pilger (Editor) "Tell Me No Lies" is one of the best books I've ever read. According to:smh.com "Alongside such famous stories as fellow Australian Philip Knightley's thalidomide scandal and Seymour Hersh's investigation of how US soldiers massacred hundreds of civilians at My Lai in 1968, there are reporters whose work simply, but no less importantly, bears witness to horrific events. These include Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya's report about the refugee mother who is alive physically but "dead to the world" because contract soldiers in a "dreadful and cynical atrocity" shot her children when she was driving them and her dead husband to his burial." Very Essential reading. You can buy the book at Amazon for a Price: £6.99 at Amazon.co.uk

On the Road to Kandahar - Jason Burke 22/08/2007

On the Road to Kandahar

On the Road to Kandahar - Jason Burke Jason Burke gives a good account of the middle east, of Kurdish Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Algeria and the Muslim world of South East Asia. According to the Guardian: "From Algeria to Thailand, Burke, formerly The Observer's chief reporter in the region, moves through every quadrant of Islam, drawing out profound differences between the communities. This is no homogeneous surge of Muslims massing to rise as one against the West. His vivid contacts with Kurdish, Arab and Asian Muslims reveal complex issues, inter-communal and international, that far outstrip the 'war on terror's' capacity to provide analysis or answers." The book is well written, clear and easy to understand. Jason Burke is also the author of Al - Qaeda: The True Story of Radical Islam.
