Watford Palace Theatre 23/06/2016

Watford Palace Theatre

Watford Palace Theatre I've been visiting Watford Palace Theatre on and off throughout the past 10 years or so, as it is a relatively local venue. It stages a variety of shows both for children and adults, in theatre, dance and cinema showings. There is just one hall where all events are held. Prices As with most theatre venues, their prices can vary depending on what the show is. For a cinema screening of a delayed National Theatre show, I paid about £15 which was more expensive than the local Vue. Their kids shows are about £7 which is fair for the quality they bring in and their pantomime is competitive with other local companies at about £20 for a ticket or £40 for a family. For under 25's there is a good scheme called Rumour allowing them to get into certains shows for just £5. Opening Hours/Box Office/Website Purchase Their opening hours are good as they stay open from 10am to 7pm, which means picking up tickets can be useful for those who live locally after work. Purchasing through their website has also worked well for me and never had any problems. Space There isn't a whole lot of space to wait around, however it never has been particularly crowded when I've seen a show. On packed events I imagine they may open the doors a little area, as there isn't a lot of space. There isn't anywhere to sit and wait pre-show in the theatre space but there's lots of restaurants or cafes in the surrounding area. The space that the events are held in is a large traditional theatre space. It looks ...

Toyday Traditional & Classic Toys Battery Powered Flying Pig 12/06/2016

Pigs Can Fly!

Toyday Traditional & Classic Toys Battery Powered Flying Pig I was given the Flying Pig as a gift for my birthday awhile ago and it was one of my favourite decorations to have hanging from the ceiling. I've just recently taken it down, but while it was up it had a very cute look and made for a quirky addition. I'm not entirely sure where this was bought from as it was so long ago. But it seems to have been discontinued since then and only a few are left on Amazon for about £25. I doubt this was bought for more than £10 previously and I probably would not pay over that for such a small item as it doesn't do that much. The main aspect of the toy is that you attach it to the ceiling and then, powered by batteries, the pig will go round and round in circles from the wire attached to it and flap it's wings round. It's really cute watching it do this although after a few minutes it does lose its novelty factor. The main downside of this is that it does make a lot of noise when it goes round and round, it doesn't have the most relaxing sound. I wouldn't put it over the bed, as even though it hasn't happened to mine, I'd be worried about it falling still. The pig is 14cm long and really does have wings that move up and down. The wire provided is just the right length, however I have recently had the problem of having a cat try and jump at it repeatedly after becoming obsessed with catching it. The back of the box says you should allow 2 metres around the pig, so this probably wouldn't be suited best in a small room. It is a well made ...

Mattel Spongebob Uno Card Game 03/06/2016

Spongebob Uno

Mattel Spongebob Uno Card Game I've had this set of cards for awhile now as Uno is one of my favourite card games to play. It is a spin on the traditional Uno with the cards design featuring Spongebob as the main parts of the card. Price When I bought these they must have been about £7 from a local Toys R Us. However, since then I don't think they've been restocked and I've only seen them available online. The prices online seem to be extortionate at about £20 just for this small pack, which I think even for a Spongebob fan is a bit too much for a pack of cards. The limit they set is 7+ but I think younger kids could grasp this pretty easily. I've seen advertised 'My First Uno' cards as well recently which might be better for a younger age range. The Game They are Uno cards, so the main aim they're supposed to be used for are pretty much the same as regular Uno. Each player gets 7 cards and then they must try and get rid of all their cards, by using the ones they have and putting them on similar colour cards or changing the colour with similar numbered cards. Once you get into the swing of it, it does get easier and addictive. What's the Difference? The cards are pretty much the same as any other pack of Uno cards except instead of colours, now there is also the addition of Spongebob characters on the front. There is a wide selection of characters, and all the main ones are shown on them in different poses and scenarios. They are all well drawn and look like they've come from the cartoon ...

Relax with Art Colouring Books - Unique Magazines 24/05/2016

Relax with Art

Relax with Art Colouring Books - Unique Magazines Relax with Art is a colouring book that is released every month. I was first given these as a way to kill time during rehearsals for a show. Since then, they've become fun ways to pass the time and as a way to keep busy and occupied. Price Relax with Art is about £3 to buy and I've seen it in most newsagents and supermarkets. This is a fair price for the quality and for the longevity I've got out of it it's been worth the price. Compared to other colouring books, it's probably one of the cheapest as I've seen a few go for about £6-£8 sometimes. Quality and Variety The book comes as paperback and so is easily foldable and bendable to fit in bags. However, the cover is made out of a strong glossy paper and I haven't had any problems with creases or really bad folds yet. It's about the same size as a standard magazine just with better quality paper. The paper used for the colouring pages is thick and withable to stand a variety of pens/pencils without there being any bleedthrough. In the magazine that I am using, the theme was 'Halloween' and so some of the designs were based around this. Halloween themes included a haunted house, graveyard, spider and it's web and a few more. But then as the book continued there were 'normal' designs of a castle, a wizard, a fairy and other patterns. They were of a good variety and some were more difficult than others. On each design page, there was a good mix of small and large parts to colour in as well as clear layouts for each of ...

Aviv Dance Studios 15/05/2016

Aviv Dance Studios

Aviv Dance Studios I've been attending Aviv Dance Studios for about 3 years now at their tap classes. They are a dance studio providing lessons for children, teens and adults. I've really enjoyed my classes there and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking to get into dance as it has been a great starter for me to build the skills I need. Value for Money The value for money at Aviv has been excellent. It's about the same as most dance studios however the quality of their lessons exceed others. You pay a £20 annual registration fee (which can be paid after your first class if you decide to come back). From then on a single class is just £7, but if you decide to take more than 1 class a week (or it's easier for you) you can pay in bulk with 4 classes valid for 4 week periods at £24. Then after that it starts getting cheaper at 8 classes in a 4 week period for £44, 12 classes for £60 and unlimited classes for £90. Dance Studios + Location The dance studios are located in Watford Boys School's gym building, in Watford. It has lots of parking spaces available located near the dance studio and aside from parent/teacher evenings, there's never been a problem with needing to park. If the car park is full, there's lots of space on the roads for free. The signage can be a bit confusing and there are a few other buildings around, so it's good to keep the Aviv office number the first time you arrive to ask for directions. There's a big waiting room when you arrive with lots of sofas and ...

WHSmith Fineliner 13/05/2016

WH Smith's Fineliners

WHSmith Fineliner I bought these fineliners as I needed a way to write several note sections for a theatre production in different colours to distinguish each actor/stagehands roles and what was required of them. After the production was over, I ended up using them for the adult colouring books I use. Price and Comparison I paid £4 for these on sale, but have seen them selling for £8 which seems quite expensive for pens, however they are of good value and I'd be happy to pay both prices. Compared to Stabilo's fineliners they are a few pounds cheaper and do just as well. I've also used Tesco's fineliners and while these were only £3, they didn't have the same lasting and quality that WH Smith's had. Carry and Colour The pens come in a plastic carry case which are good if you don't want to put them into a separate pencil case or just want to keep them all together. The carry case has been bashed around at the back of my bag and managed to stay durable, without the lid coming off. Included in the pack are 12 different colours including dark and light green, red, pink, dark and light blue, brown, purple, pink, yellow, orange and black. Durable They are quite durable although you have to make sure you're not too heavy handed when writing with them as the tips can split causing them to give a double effect and thicker look. For this reason, I'd recommend it for adults or children who've already got an understanding of writing so that they don't get destroyed too quickly. So far, I've used the ...

Anken Anker Moomins Notebook 26/04/2016

Moomin Notebook

Anken Anker Moomins Notebook I was given this notebook for my birthday by a friend as she knows I go through notebooks like mad. You can buy it from Amazon (currently unavailable) however I know that she went to a store called Artbox in London to purchase it and they usually have quite cute things and a variety of notebooks. Price Unfortunately I'm not entirely sure what the price of this notebook is. Knowing Artbox's prices it's likely to be around £7-8 pound, and for the quality of the notebook I would recommend it. It's lasted ages and has been of high quality for a variety of uses. Design The front of the cover is a bright pink and hasn't bled out even though it's been left in the sun on my desk for days at a time. It's a cute design with a moomin on the front surrounded by flowers and would be good for a fan of the characters. It also has a light blue elasticated band around the notebook to hold it together. This has remained equally as bright, hasn't snapped or became too loose. Durability The notebook is A4 sized and has a very cute pattern on the front of a Moomin drawing surrounded by flowers. The cover of the notebook is very sturdy and it has been thrown around my room a lot, in bags and has had various things spilled on it however I've been able to clean it with just some water and it hasn't damaged the front cover. As you can see from the pictures, the only scuff marks are from where I've used it to lean on and the pens gone through thanks to me pressing too hard on the pen. It's a ...

Asda Ozark Sleeping Bag 18/04/2016

Ozark Sleeping Bag

Asda Ozark Sleeping Bag I bought this sleeping bag for attending a music festival, as I got a last minute ticket and pretty much had to panic buy everything. Price I found this sleeping bag in Asda for just £15, which was a good bargain and seemed about the same price as one’s I had seen in Argos or camping shops. For the price I paid, it has definitely been worth it and I've got good value for money out of it. Quality and Spacious I am about 5’8 and there was enough space left at the bottom for someone taller to use this. It has a cosy feel on the inside, and although it is just made out of polyester, it is suprisingly comfy. If the outside of this got dirty, it’s very easy just to wipe it down to clear off any muck. It wasn’t particularly cold when I used this, just rained a bit over the night, but it managed to keep me warm and cosy for the entire night. My sister recently joined Scouts, and she has used it in her camping expeditions in all different seasons and has had no problems with it either, so good for those who enjoy camping out regularly to. I've had friends use it when they need to sleep over on our floor at the flat. However, I think for a more regular user, this might not be the ideal sleeping bag, as you could probably get a much better quality one with fleece linings and better finished zips and sewing. Weight and Carrycase Carrying it, I had no problem and it isn’t particularly heavy or bulky. I carried it for about an hour or two and it didn’t get in the way, and I’m ...

Adventure Time Jake Pilot Hat 12/04/2016

Jake The Dog Hat - Adventure Time!

Adventure Time Jake Pilot Hat I was given this hat as a gift for Christmas as I am an Adventure Time fan. I have used it a couple of times when it was snowing or when I was walking through the woods where hardly anyone will see me as it just really does not suit me at all, however my sister has used it much more than this. Price As it was a gift I have no idea where she bought it from, but it seems that after a general search it can be found in shops like Forbidden Planet or on Amazon for around £15. I'd say that this is worth the money for someone who is going to wear the hat as it does keep you very warm and is good quality. Sizing The hat is one size fits all, and it actually does this. It fit pretty much everyone in my family from my younger sister to my dad, as the material is quite stretchy so it can stretch to fit larger sized heads. This probably makes it a good gift as you don't have to worry about whether or not it will fit them! Quality The quality of this hat is very good, as it's stood the test of a cold winter this year and hasn't got destroyed yet. It is made of cotton, so is very comfy and warm to wear in that weather. The lining on the inside feels quite fleecey as well so this adds to the effect and makes it a very comfy hat to wear. Design The design of the hat would definitely appeal to an Adventure Time fan as it does look like Jake the Dog and is designed well. For me, this was too childish to wear normally, but it was fine in the garden and when I was walking in the woods. My ...

Express by Holiday Inn, Glenrothes 05/04/2016

Holiday Inn Express Glenrothes

Express by Holiday Inn, Glenrothes I recently stayed at the Holiday Inn Glenrothes as part of a business trip - we were working in the town and this was quite near to everything we needed so I was quite pleased. Obviously as soon as we got there after a 12 hour drive at 11pm at night, we went to open the boot of the car and it fell off...off to a good start - luckily that happening actually has helped me to review lots of parts of the hotel including staff and baggage trolleys! Location and Parking I didn't get to check out much of the location as I was so busy here and there with work but there wasn't too much in the surrounding area unless you had access to a car. With a car, there was a 10 min drive to the nearest shopping centre and theatre space for entertainment. It was located in a city centre environment, however was very quiet and I was able to get an easy night sleep, with no outside sounds bothering me or shouting. Great after all the stress of arriving! There was lots of parking spaces outside the hotel, I'd say probably around 40. In the three nights that we stayed, we were always able to have a parking space and it never was particularly packed. Access Access wise I would say that if you have a disability that requires climbing stairs, do make sure to double check that they've given you a bottom floor room as there is no lift. Price and Value for Money As this was bought for us, I'm not entirely sure on the exact price of the rooms however a quick look as shown that they are between ...

Smiffys Spongebob Costume 27/03/2016

Dress Up As Spongebob!

Smiffys Spongebob Costume My Smiffys Spongebob costume was definitely a random spur of the moment purchase for a fancy dress party - mainly because it was one of the cheapest options! Price Mine cost £10 from ebay, which is a pretty good price for things I have seen around in the fancy dress store near us, where they want to charge more than £25 for basically the same thing. As it has lasted so long, I would definitely say it has made it's money worth to. Size The costume I purchased mentioned that it can only be bought in one size. I have noticed on amazon what I'm assuming is the same costume, is labelled as for children. But as you can see from the picture - I'm not exactly child sized and it managed to fit fine! It also comes with gloves and shoe covers which may be more suited to giving children fully covered arms rather than just up to the elbow for me. Material The material it is made out of is foamy but still quite strong, as in the time we have had it, it has not ripped or torn, and the detail has not rubbed off one bit. It was easy to clean with just a bit of water and flannel. It's almost like a tabard in the way it's used, so could easily be washed or soaked to get it clean again. There is no foam keeping it in the square shape and it seems to hold up by itself pretty well. Design The costume itself does look very much like SpongeBob. It's bright and eyecatching and easy to wear if you want a simple costume. I think it looks exactly like SpongeBob especially down to the little ...

I Heart Guts Stomach Plush 21/03/2016

I Heart Guts!

I Heart Guts Stomach Plush I was given this as a present for my birthday as I've always liked weird stuffed toys and haven't added one to my collection in ages. It's from a range called I Heart Guts, who make stuffed toys based on the organs in the body but much cuter than the real thing. The one that I have is designed to reflect the stomach organ. Design It's about 10 inches by 6 inches so it fits on my shelf or desk nicely. The colour of it is very bright orange so it does stand out from the other stuffed toys on the shelf and due to its face it does look very cute. The fabrc it's made out of is quite fluffy and soft, with a nice feel to it - velvety almost! Wear and Tear It hasn't been thrown around much or put in a situation where I could judge wear and tear, however I've had it for a year and it hasn't discoloured even though it's been in the sunlight from my window for pretty much the entire time. Price I'm not sure what the actual price was but I've seen them on Amazon for £18. This is terribly overpriced in my opinion, as the stomach is actually quite small and you could probably get something a bit bigger for that amount of money. I haven't seen them in shops or even in a stall at Camden, which is where I'd expect to find them. Overall, I think that while this is a very cute stuffed toy it is painfully expensive! I don't really think that it is worth £18 as it is quite small. However, it is very cute and maybe if someone was obsessed with the stomach organ or had just completed a ...

Quntoon Um-Banana Umbrella 15/03/2016

Banana Umbrella!

Quntoon Um-Banana Umbrella I recently was given a Mystery Box from Firebox as a gift from a friend, and inside contained this Um-Banana umbrella. Not usually something I'd buy, but it's actually come in handy quite a few times with the recent weather. Value for Money This is about £15 on Amazon, it's fair for someone who wants a novelty umbrella, or one that comes in a case. I haven't seen many umbrellas with a case to protect it, so it does make it relatively unique, so the price does reflect this. Design It's really colourful and looks pretty much as close to a banana as you could get. It's really bright so stands out in your bag for easy finding when you can feel the beginning of the rain! There is a banana shape case to protect the umbrella, and the top half is able to be pulled off, with the bottom remaining as a handle. The metal rod which connects the handle and umbrella is sturdy with a clip to hold in place. There is no fancy patterning on the umbrella itself, just a bright yellow cover. Suitability It's quite large for a child, so I'd recommend this more for adult use. It was able to cover one person enough, but I was also able to fit an extra person in there, just. Wear and Tear This has been thrown in my backpack multiple times and so far I have had no problems with it getting scuffed, ruined or damaged. It's fallen out my hands a couple of times to and has remained as pristine as it was when I was given it. Umbrella wise, this has also been really sturdy and haven't had any problems ...

Dancing Cat Speakers 04/03/2016

Dancing Cat Speakers!

Dancing Cat Speakers The Dancing Cat speakers were given to me by my uncle who only ever seems to buy impractical and very weird gifts. I hadn't seen them anywhere in shops, so I have no idea what inspired him to buy these for me as I'm not even that big a fan of cats! After having a look on the internet, I've seen that the price for these is £28. In my opinion, this is very overpriced and you are just paying for the novelty of a moving cat as there are much better speakers on the market than this one. Only a true cat dancing lover should really pay the price if they're that interested! The cat speakers are pretty much the same as any other speaker, they give you a wire to plug your MP3, iPod or phone into it and then they play out the songs. This does require AA batteries to play the songs and dance, which can be quite annoying and it would probably be better if there was a wire provided to be plugged into the mains. There are two modes to these speakers: dance and speakers. The speaker mode is pretty explanatory, however obviously they aren't the best as they could be as they are mostly a novelty item. They get the job done if you are going to be quite close to them or if you are going to use it for a bedroom, however for living rooms, something more substantial would probably be better. It projects sound relatively well, probably around 2-3m is when it's at its clearest. The dance mode is probably why most people will buy this product. When you play a song through them, within this mode ...

Camden Roundhouse 26/02/2016

Camden Roundhouse

Camden Roundhouse I've visited Camden Roundhouse quite regularly over the past years, as they are excellent at providing art and culture events for everyone - whether it be circus shows, music, theatre or even their workshops and activities for young adults. Near the end of Camden town, it's great access to the surrounding area and I think is in a prime spot for the types of service and target audience it provides for. Prices Mostly, for well known artists and bands, I've seen prices go for around £20-£30. For smaller events, which they host just as regularly, you can see some high quality performances sometimes for as little as £10-£15. I’ve seen great theatre shows for just £10 over the years. Roundhouse have a great system in place to for under 25's in that for selected performances at just £5, thanks to their GET IN! programme, a great initiative to support young artists. There are lots of workshops and creative activities that they've set up for under 25's to as part of their Young Creative programmes and most of these are very reasonable, either £2 per session or some even free. I have a friend who attended workshops over 8 weeks, and at the end Roundhouse took them to Latitude Festival for free to perform, which he thought was one of the best performance experience’s he’s had and he only paid £25! For other venues around London, these are some of the most reasonable I've seen. Opening Hours The box office is open from 9:30am to 5pm for ticket purchases, either in person or ...
