NH Amsterdam centre, Amsterdam 27/02/2007

Ideally located for museums, parks and cafes.

NH Amsterdam centre, Amsterdam Stopping here for one night on my way to an early flight from Schiphol I found this was ideally located to visits visit the local restaurants and cafes. If I had more time it is in a great location for the museum and to start canal trips. Check-in was simple as I had stayed in an NH hotel before so they had all my details but got a bit annoyed when at least 3 different bellboys wanted to take my case from me to escort me to my room. The room wasof a reasonable size and had all the usual facilities of cable tv and internet. The bar was large but a bit impersonal for me and I prefered the short walk to the Leidseplein for my refreshment. Because of my early start I missed breakfast but did see it being prepared as I checked out and it seemed to encompass aldd breakfast tasted as a multi-mational chain should. I upset the door staff again as I left as I had pre-booked my taxi myself.

Mandarin Park Plaza, Eindhoven 27/02/2007

Did not dissapoint

Mandarin Park Plaza, Eindhoven Taking up an offer of 170 euro for two nights I jumped at this hotel when I had to stay in Eindhoven. A fair walk to the city centre and definately a taxi ride to the rail station this is an excellently equipped hotel. After an efficient check-in I entered my room and was amazed by the amount of space but on starting to unpack I realised there was nowhere to hand my clothes, but then I found the annex room with the wardrobe. It was too narrow to be a dressing room and to preserve modesty you had to be dressed to go there and get your clothes as it looked out to a busy junction. The room had internet facilities, cable tv and a mini bar. A nice hotel feature was that on leaving the hotel in the afternoon there was an exit/entrance you can use without traipsing through the reception. The hotel bar was a bit small in relation to the size of the hotel but was pleasant to sit in for a quite drink at the end of the evening.

Motel, Eindhoven 08/02/2007

Spacious Modern Motel

Motel, Eindhoven Do not be put off by the reception being to the rear of the Motel. This is to avoid the crowds waiting for a table in their excellent restaurant. The rooms are spacious with large bathrooms and all the usual facilities such as multilingual tv channels and mini-bar. Facilities include a gymnasium and large swimming pool, with a sports shop to purchase those forgotten items. A general shop is located at the front of the Motel for more mundane items and gifts. The bar, situated to the rear of the Motel, is large and comfortable with sofas and armchairs, and has a view of the pool. Outside of the Motel are facilities for local sports teams and competietive games are held there. You are only a short, walking, distance of Animali which is a smal zoo. Eindhoven is only a short drive (3km) and you are at the side of the A2 with direct access to Germany and Belgium.

Hotel Europa 92, Amsterdam 19/01/2006

User friendly hotel in excellent location

Hotel Europa 92, Amsterdam After living in Amsterdam for a few years I make frequent return trips. I have finally found a hotel that fits all of my criteria. On the junction of Overtoom and 1e Constatijn Huygensstraat it is perfectly situated with the Leidseplein with its many restaurants close by, and conveniently located for the Vondelpark and the museum quarter. Trams to all areas of the city are only a few minutes away. The hotel itself is reasonably priced. First impressions on entering the reception were that it was going to be a good stay. The staff were friendly and efficient, The bar and restaurant were pointed out to me and I was informed about the available facilities. The room was comfortable witha shower, toilet, telephone and television. A wireless internet facility is also available at a small cost (12 euro for 24 hours). There is Parking available close to the hotel at an extra cost. In addition, the hotel has a lift, small bar, garden and laundry service. I do not know the charges for the parking or the laundry service but parking space in Central Amsterdam is at a premium. The price of rooms start from £50 (December 2005 price) ...

Philips HD 7810/60/61/69 Senseo Black 30/03/2005

Better than instant and cleaner than a cafetiere

Philips HD 7810/60/61/69 Senseo Black After being back in the UK for 3 months I decided to ditch the cafetiere and buy a coffee machine. I needed something that was quick, simple to use and didn't waste coffee and this fits the bill perfectly. Initially designed for the Dutch market (Philips and Douwe Egberts both being Dutch) it produces small cups of coffee as that is how they drink it, but their home based coffee is strong and tastiy. What I do to make a mug of coffee is to just use one pod, press the one cup mode, let it run through, press one cup mode again and when it reaches the optimum level for the mug, depending if you add milk/cream or not, stop the flow of water by pressing the on/off button. It suits my taste, hope it suits yours. ...

Jet2 26/03/2005

Jet2 from Manchester

Jet2 I noticed Jet2 were now flying from Manchester to Amsterdam so I thought I would give it a go and see some old friends. The online booking service was simple to use and the price was very reasonable. Also the advantage of using terminal 1 at Manchester meant no long trek from the station to check-in. Getting to terminal 1 check-in was no problem, finding the Jet2 desk was, I needed a check-in desk in the 100's but they only seemed to go up to about 60. I then saw a small signon a pillar as you exit the check-in area that the Jet2 check-in was downstairs, yes stairs so anyone with a heavy case better beware. Illogically there is an escalator out of there. There may have been an elevator but I didn't see it. Check-in went smoothly and they allocate seats so that was OK. Boarding was on-time, we were off the stand before time and then away. Arrived in Amsterdam 20 minutes early. I noticed with the seating allocation people were either crowded into the rear or front of the cabin but the staff let people move seats if they wanted. Flight back was also on-time. No complaints at all and am using them again in two weeks time. ...

Panasonic KX-TCD 515 SMS 23/02/2005

Multi-function home phone

Panasonic KX-TCD 515 SMS I purchased this phone on the strength of the capacity of the answer phone (30 minutes) and thankfully did not see the text messaging function as a necessity. A great feature on the phone is that it can be programmed to tell you who is calling (audibly) without refering to the screen. Of course unknown call IDs are only displayed on the screen. The problem with the text messaging facility is that whoever calls you must put your number in the body of the text and I personally do not think that is practical as the person, or machine, replying to your message might not know this. Overall I see this as a very useful phone with a large capacity phonebook and answerphone and its capability of expansion with extra handsets. ...
