A Royal Duty - Paul Burrel 01/02/2005

Paul Burrell's Royal Duty...

A Royal Duty - Paul Burrel Following his recent appearance in 'I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here!' I decided to read up on the man Paul Burrell through his autobiography 'A Royal Duty', not knowing too much about his life or his involvement in the Royal Family in particular Diana, Princess of Wales. ‘You are the captain of my ship – I am safe with you at the helm’ – Diana, Princess of Wales to Paul Burrell. ‘No one has been closer to my family than you have’ – Her Majesty the Queen to Paul Burrell. In reading these quotes on the back cover of the book I was considering whether it was worth reading this book as it sounded as though it would be very egotistical and full of praise for himself and the duties he has performed for the Royal Family. Then I remembered his portrayal on 'I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here', where he did seem like a very self-applauding man at all, possibly the opposite. The book follows Paul’s life from when he was growing up in Derbyshire and beginning his servant life at Buckingham Palace to the recent court case in which her Majesty the Queen historically intervened. Although the main proportion of the 400 pages in the book describe his fond memories of life as a butler and ‘best friend’ to Princess Diana. It is a very interesting insight into the lives of Royal servants and Paul’s tale in particular is very intriguing, he must have had one of the most exciting and at the same time bewildering experiences as a servant to firstly the Queen, then the Prince and ...

A Girl's Guide To The Champions League...

Everything that starts with C ... Ok, this is a weird one. For my fifth review here on Ciao I thought I would go for something a bit adventurous, about a subject I am not too aware of. Football. I am not too bad on the subject, I’ve been to a few West Ham games with my dad and I can explain the offside rule… …but the one part of football I’ve never understood is the Champions League (for those unaware read on). So I’ve put some research into it and I think I am probably now a Champions League boffin. Firstly, the question on many lips, what is the Champions League? It is a football competition including the best teams in Europe such as Manchester United, Real Madrid and Arsenal. It has a quite recent history beginning in its current format at the beginning of the 1992/93 season. It starts off with a qualifying competition, which whittles the competition down to 32 teams in the group stage, which is where the action begins. The winners and runners up of the 8 groups qualify for the Last 16, where only the best teams remain, after that there is a knock-out phase where teams play against each other home and away reducing the competition to two teams and a final for the title of best football team in Europe… …So how can the teams qualify? To be eligible for the Champions League a team must either be last year’s winner or win the top league in their country or finish just behind the winners. The amount of teams entered by a country and their entry ...

Head & Shoulders Citrus Fresh for Greasy Hair 11/04/2004

Invent One For My Skin Please!...

Head & Shoulders Citrus Fresh for Greasy Hair Tenth opinion here on Ciao and how the time has gone so slowly, quite unlike my dandruff after I started using Head and Shoulders shampoo as a young girl. Since I grew out of Johnson’s ‘No-Tears’ Shampoo I have always used Head and Shoulders, I didn’t have a dandruff problem but just a little bit which is now all gone thanks to a great shampoo. The latest offering from the well respected Head and Shoulders chain is Citrus Fresh. Head and Shoulders claim that this shampoo is the ‘freshest new idea in hair care’ and is ‘carefully formulated to eliminate dandruff while also fighting greasiness’. Although this would be a great reason to buy the shampoo for someone not already using Head and Shoulders. For me, a regular user of Head and Shoulders I chose this new variety because I love a citrus smell and I wanted to see if it could work even better on my hair than my normal variant. Widely available in most toiletry shops such as Boots and Superdrug it comes in 400ml and 200ml bottles. Priced around average for a good quality shampoo at £3.99 for a 400ml bottle in my nearest Boots. In the shop I smelt the shampoo and it has a pleasant, not over-powering citrus smell. It contains ‘unique revitalising extracts of lemon grass, grapefruit and green tea’, which obviously blend well together. I remembered not to make my judgements too quickly but there was little doubt in my mind that this shampoo would do the job ...

McCain Micro-Toastie 02/04/2004

Micro-Toasted...

McCain Micro-Toastie Tired after my day out shopping with the girls I wanted to have a nice bath and stay in and watch a movie or two. Being the amazing cook I am I decided to go and buy a microwave meal from my local shop and on sale were a multipack of McCain Micro Toastie… …What is a Toastie? A toastie is a toasted sandwich, a micro one is special because it is ready prepared so all you have to do is put it in the microwave!… …What packaging do they come in? They come in a rectangular box unmissable by the huge Micro Toastie sign on the front and a picture. They are very similar to other McCain Micro products such as the Micro Chips and the Micro Pizza… ...How should they be stored? It is recommended that you store the Micro-Toastie in the freezer and if you do not then i recommended eating it as soon as possible!... …Are there different flavours? I bought the Cheese ‘n’ Onion flavour as I did not see any other but there is also a Cheese ‘n’ Ham flavour shown on the packaging but still a limited amount of varied flavours… …Are the instructions easy to follow? As long as you have your glasses on it explains the instructions extremely clearly with a list of Dos and Don’ts as well just to make sure your Cheese ‘n’ Onion flavour Micro Toastie eating experience is not ruined by any food poisoning or microwave explosions… …What does it look like before ...

Guinness World Records British Hit Singles (16th Edition) - Guinness 27/03/2004

The Official British Hit Singles...

Guinness World Records British Hit Singles (16th Edition) - Guinness I have always been a bit of a fact junkie and I love finding out new information and at Christmas I regularly receive titles like The Top 10 of Everything and the Guinness Book of Records and that is probably why this Christmas from my gran I received my first ever British Hit Singles book… …When I unwrapped the book my eyes sparkled at the bright psychedelic purpley-pink cover and then in big bold letters BRITISH HIT SINGLES. I had never seen this book before and was unsure of what it contained as it is such a large book but a Guinness World Records symbol on the front reassured me that this was to be a factually based book and one I would adore reading… …Don’t be fooled by the name the book is not just a list of every British Hit Single ever, although that is part of the book, there are many other very fascinating features throughout. The first part commemorates the 50th anniversary of the official UK singles chart and has all the chart milestones from its beginning in 1952 to the year 2002 ranging from Jimmy Savile's first edition of Top of the Pops to the more recent fastest selling debut single by Will Young... ...Following this is one of the most noteworthy parts of the book, the review of the year 2002. It is fifteen pages full of every piece of music news and gossip that occurred through each month from rumours about Mariah Carey's struggling record deal arrangements to the very sad ordeal of awful poop (no spelling mistake) ...

Scholl Verruca Removal System 22/03/2004

Warts On Your Feet?...

Scholl Verruca Removal System I have had verrucas before however only when I was younger and after I came home from my recent break in Dubai I realised I had got two, one on my second toe and the other on the sole of my foot. I do not want to have verrucas because although I do not show off my feet on a regular basis verrucas do not make great viewing and an even bigger reason is that it is just unhygienic… …So what are verrucas? Verrucas are small-thickened growths of skin on your feet, which are caused by a virus. You can get verrucas by direct contact or in changing rooms at swimming pools. They do not spread rapidly throughout families and it is thought that you are more likely to get them at different ages during your life... …Ok how can I spot them then? Well on my feet they look like white flat circles and one has a very small black mark in the middle, any hard skin with a whitish colour on your feet is most probably a verruca... …How can I get rid of them then? There are many products available and some of them are going to be better than others; the main hint to their quality will most probably be the price as with most things… …What have you used? Not having a lot of money I went out to Boots and bought Scholl’s Verruca removal system. It comes in a yellow thin rectangular shape and apart from the price, £3.50, the other reason I was drawn to it was the scientific look about the product. The words ‘medicated disc ...

Doctor Dolittle 2 (DVD) 06/03/2004

Dolittle Is Back...

Doctor Dolittle 2 (DVD) Very bored and looking for an opinion today I found that the Dr. Dolittle 2 DVD had not been reviewed and seeing as it’s part of my DVD collection I thought, might as well… Firstly the film: Sequel to the original high grossing film Dr. Dolittle, Eddie Murphy remains as the title character who can still talk with animals. Now everybody knows about his talent he is asked in this comedy to help try to save the forest from being developed into property and thus destroying the creatures habitats. To do this he must turn a circus bear into a charming love mate so that an endangered bear falls for him but this is harder than it seems, as the bear needs a lot of help and encouragement into settling in the wild. He also has to cope with many things along the way such as his family’s reaction to his newfound fame, other entertaining and appealing animals, the funniest being a drunken monkey, and the bad guys who try to halt his progress so they can make money from the forest development. Eddie Murphy is the only easily recognisable actor in the film but this does not matter as he pulls of the funny man part with ease like he has done in many films like The Nutty Professor, Bowfinger and the original Dr. Dolittle. Director Steve Carr is fairly new to the screens but does a good job in directing for the duration of the film. It’s a good family comedy that will guarantee some laughs and keep you entertained, not a classic but fine to sit down with ...

Friday's Child - Will Young 21/02/2004

Friday's Child Is Loving and Giving...

Friday's Child - Will Young Ok...haven't written a review in a long time so I expect I will be a bit rusty. I have just been on holiday to Dubai and to make me even more relaxed while sunbathing in the hot 25'C sun...jealous yet?...I brought along my CD player. Having listened to ‘Leave Right Now’, the first number one single to be released from Will Young’s latest album Friday’s Child, and loving it I decided to buy the album for the holiday… ---- Will Young Firstly for those unaware of the British talent of Will Young, which I assume is a small minority, I will give you a brief bio: In 2002, he won the first series of Pop Idol, the reality TV show featuring Simon Cowell, and since then has stormed the charts with the biggest selling debut single, ‘Evergreen’ and other singles, one of the best being a cover of The Doors’ classic, ‘Light My Fire’. He has performed in front of millions, his most famous guest being Her Royal Highness at her Jubilee Party, as well as winning multiple awards for his music, including a lucrative Brit Award for Best Newcomer. After that busy year he spent most of 2003 working on this album, which was released that December, coinciding with the release of ‘Leave Right Now’, both reaching number one ---- The CD The CD comes in the usual format; the front cover has a picture of Will and his name and album name. In the inside there are some gorgeous pictures of Will (yes I know I am ...

Coca-Cola, Caffeine Free Diet 13/11/2003

It's not 11:30 but we can make an exception...

Coca-Cola, Caffeine Free Diet O.k. today I have had one of the luckiest days of my life...I managed to pull a sickie at work, I found a five pound note under my bed, and I’ve fallen in love! Anyway back to the point...I am feeling so lucky that I thought I’d try my luck at an opinion for my fellow Ciaoers on a Diet Coke that is Caffeine Free... ----- Packaging: Diet Coke can be found in a golden can or a bottle with a golden stripe. It is very easy to see it is Diet Coke by the big Diet Coke written on the side. The can does give a more metal taste but I find it improves the flavour. ----- The Four F's (Form, Feeling, Fragrance, Flavour): The actual drink itself looks a mixture between dark brown and black, there are lots of fizzy bubbles and it is not viscous but water-like in thickness. It feels like you are drinking water but the fizz is strong and you can feel the bubbles around your mouth. It doesn't really have an odour; it smells like its surroundings, for example from the can it smells mainly of metal. Which brings me to probably the most important part of my opinion, the taste: If you have tasted Coca Cola before it is not to different to that except it has a less sweet taste and less overall flavour. For those who have never ventured into one of the most famous drinks in the world the taste is quite hard to describe, it has a cola taste, is not very rich in flavour (with all the caffeine gone and it is diet) and it is quite sweet. Not recommended by ...

Just Over A Month To Go...

Recipes for Desserts We are coming close to that time of year again...festive giving, carol singing and making Christmas Pudding. This is my recipe, handed down two generations that is highly recommended, for you to try out this Christmas. It is easy to follow as long as you know the basic cooking skills. Top 10 Crisp Flavours 03/11/2003

What Flavour Fills Your Fantasies?

Top 10 Crisp Flavours Still in my teens i am quite a virgin to the wide world of crisp flavours but from the 100s i have tried i have made a list of my Top 10 Crisp Flavours: 10)Tantalizing Tastebuds at Ten: @~~@ Walkers' Pickled Onion Monster Munch @~~@ A great tasting flavour, the best of the monster munch range. Created by Walkers as more than half of the list are it is definitely recommend. Also recommended would be for Walkers to put clear warnings on the packaging that increased sweating of the face will be endured. Don't let that put you off though. 9)Nourishing Nibbles at Nine: @~~@ Walkers' Cheesy 3Ds @~~@ Like Doritos (which were just outside the Top 10) differing in the fact they come in a 3D shape hence the name 3Ds. They are not value for money with more air in the packaging than a hot air balloon but the taste is great. If you are not a great cheese lover you do not have to be cautious of this flavour as it does not taste very cheesy...just nice. 8)Enjoyably Edible at Eight: @~~@ Walkers' Sweet and Sour @~~@ A new flavour from the latest series of 'take-away' crisps. This is the best of the three new oriental tastes with the others being Chinese Spare Rib and Chicken Tikka Masala. The sweet and sour flavour does make me reminice of my favourite Chinese meal but the taste is not too overpowering as i thought it might be. It won't be the Madonna of the crisp world...more like Take That (will do well eventually spliting). It would be a good crisp to try for ...
