Cheltenham & Gloucester Building Society Loans 02/05/2011

Don´t expect good customer service or flexibility - or fairness

Cheltenham & Gloucester Building Society Loans How very helpful and ready were the C &G building society to loan my late father a sum amounting to 10% of the value of his property - secured on the property, with no life insurance - in that they were most helpful. Unfortunately only 6 weeks later he passed away. I, as his only heir, did the "correct" thing and advised them immediately of his death and explained that I was in full time employment, had a house of my own which was bringing in rental income, intended to rent his house out also - and explained that as the repayments were over 800 GBP per month, I would request an extension on the loan term in order to repay it. OK, I was very stressed, but not nearly as stressed as when they immediately replied - No, either you pay off the loan in the next three months, we will reposses the property!!! I could not believe what I was hearing. I was totally financially viable, and could have easily paid the 21,000 gpb he had borrowed - if ONLY they had treated me like a person, saw my viability. What they saw was the opportunity to obtain a house worth over 200,000 for the cost of 83.00 (the one payment my father had made). I was disgusted. I still am disgusted. I had to immediately organise alternative finance from my mortgage lender (who put the money into my account within 24 hours). Banks must make a LOT of money with these kind of deals - but in my opinion it is tantamount to stealing and I hope people do not fall into the same trap my father did. ...

Leeds & Holbeck Building Society Mortgages 27/04/2011

Leeds & Holbeck - where you are not just a number

Leeds & Holbeck Building Society Mortgages I had a mortgage with Leeds and Holbeck for 20 years, it was easy to set up, well managed, they kept me well informed of changes etc., and were helpful with advice. They also were quite aminable to me adding to my mortgage to obtain double glazing and all was done promptly and professionally. However, I was most impressed when my father had died, what I did not know was that he had taken out a loan through Lloyds Bank (whom we had both banked with - all our working lives). I was working, and also renting out a property with a Leeds mortgage on it. I went to Lloyds and explained (whilst waiting for the results of my father´s inquest) that I could repay the loan, but I would need a little longer that the 3 years term and lower payments. I had a job contract and was going to rent out two properties. The loan (secured on my father´s house) was worth approx 1/10th of the value of the property. Lloyds reply was "repay the whole loan within three months or we repossess" - I was horrified, and disgusted. I rushed home and explained the situation to the Leeds with whom I had my mortgage, and within 24 hours the money to repay Lloyds was in my account. I call that good, old fashioned (and at a very stressful time) very sympathetic service. So, mortgage, loan, additional mortgage - whatever you are looking for, I recommend Leeds and Holbeck FOR SERVICE AT ALL LEVELS. ...

Sun Laboratories Ultra Dark Tanning Spray 05/04/2011

The Best Self Tanner I have ever tried...

Sun Laboratories Ultra Dark Tanning Spray Even though I live a lot of the year in Spain, I am (at my age) a “wrinkle manic”. I try my very best not to sunbath – and I find it boring, but I HATE being white. Even when I did sunbath, my legs never seemed to go brown, a problem which I believe many people have. I tried many different self tanning products, and always ended up looking orange, or patchy – or at worst had to stay in until the awful stuff wore off my skin. I discovered Sun Labs Ultra Dark Airbrush Self Tanning mist first on QVC.UK. I was very impressed at the demonstration, it looked extremely easy to apply, and, best of all, gave immediate colour which meant I could SEE if I had missed any bits. It has been voted the best daily self tanner. Once my order arrived I followed the suggestions very carefully (I exfoliate frequently anyway, but this is a must before you start, I would suggest at least a week of exfoliating and moisturizing before beginning to use the product for best results). On the demonstration it really looked very easy, just spraying on a fine mist of gorgeous colour wherever you needed it, just like “airbrushing” your skin. In all honesty, it was not quite that easy. The mist does not come out of the can completely evenly, but it is easily rubbed in to provide a lovely deep golden colour. You can use the can upside down which helps, but I needed a long handled body lotion applicator to ensure my back was evenly covered. One other point – it is a micro mist spray – therefore ...

Zhuzh Tan Accelerator 04/04/2011

Zhuzh Tan Accelerator - convenient, effective and luxurious

Zhuzh Tan Accelerator Steve Whatley´s Zhuzh Tan Accelerator has a cult following - and with good reason. Many tanning accelerators have to be used upto two weeks before they begin to function, by encouraging the production of melanin in the skin which produces a natural tan. Zhuzh begins working the first time you apply it to your skin. Packaged in an attractive 100 or 200ml gold can, this light, moisturising and lovely scented spray can be applied easily all over the body. It dries extremely quickly, leaving the skin feeling mouisturised and smooth (it contains shea butter). There is no sticky, or oily residue and you can get dressed immediately after application. It is designed to be used both for outdoor and solarium tanning and definately helps produce a quicker, more uniform tan. As it is activated by daylight(even weak U.K. sunlight!) you will find that you tan quicker and do not have to bake in hot sun to do so. I have used it for many years and I am not a sun worshipper, I put it on before walking the dogs or doing the garden - in fact anytime that my skin is exposed to natural light. I would highly recommend it if you are going on holiday, as you will be impressed at the results! Not only is it available in spray cans, but also in handy foil wrapped individual wipes to carry easily. One thing which we must all be aware of is the Zhuzh does not contain any sunscreen, it is therefore imperative that after applying Zhuzh, you should never forget to apply your normal ...

Sun Laboratories Instant Self Tan Spray 04/04/2011

The best self tanner so far - and you can see where you put it !

Bikkenbergs Camino del Valverde Spanish Boots 02/04/2011

Most Comfortable, fashion/casual boots - and lasted 13 years!

Bikkenbergs Camino del Valverde Spanish Boots I am very fussy about what I put on my feet - it has to be comfortable, but stylish, not to low, not to high... etc., etc., Whilst living in Spain I discovered the range "Camino Del Valverde" and bought my first pair 13 years ago (and I still have them!). The boots were actually designed as walking boots for going on long, dusty pilgrimages, but also for riding horses as well. Their webside has a numerous choice of boots, the ones I purchased come to mid calf and are made of tan suede, with embroidered (not over the top) stitching (called "Rocio" boots). A mid size (about 2") heel is comfortable and means I can wear them with jeans, trousers and skirts - and I have, constantly, for 13 years. Even now, when the light suede colour is becoming grubby, I am just going to dye them and darker colour, get them reheeled - and will probably get another 5 years out of them. I have also had a black leather pair with lower heels, and a dull brown leather pair, which I used when working with horses, and with the dust and dryness in Spain, footwear takes some battering - but these boots have never let me down. The prices on the Valverde website for these particular boots is approx. 53 euros, and well worth it. Other styles from short jodphur type boots to longer riding or "countryside" boots & shoes) vary depending on materials etc. They will even make you a custom fit pair for around 110 euros. I cannot recommend these boots highly enough - even after hours and hours of ...

Getting Back In Shape - Deborah Mackin 22/03/2011

Not only for ladies with babies !

Getting Back In Shape - Deborah Mackin I had the honour of meeting Debbie Mackin whilst teaching riding in Cadiz, Spain. Not only is she a beautiful lady, but she moves with the grace of a ballet dancer and, as much as her busy professional life allows, is a fantastic mother to her children. She is living proof her system works. I realise this book was written for ladies trying to get back into shape after having a child, but having had NO children (and no intention of doing so), I discussed my back problems (and abdominal mass!) with Debbie and she suggested I get her video/book as the exercises were designed for ladies wanting to regain their figure after childbirth, but, consequently, they were also very gentle (but effective) on your back. She explained to me that she did the video and wrote the book because she wanted a no nonsense, easy to follow (and easy to do) exercise regime which did not have a “celebrity” name (or that you gave up on because the first five minutes were just TOO much). This book is based on exercises that work – and womens ability to keep at it – because it was fun and produced RESULTS. The pictures are great and help you check you are “doing it right”. Well, after years of physio, painkillers etc., I duly started my exercises, stage by stage, and unlike the MANY books, videos etc., I have had before I did not feel like giving up. I felt a difference within a week (especially in my nagging back pain) and as I progressed in my abdominals and pelvic floor (you don´t have to have had ...

Royal Road to Fotheringay - Jean Plaidy 13/02/2011

A fascinating insite into the life of Scotland´s Mary Stuart

Royal Road to Fotheringay - Jean Plaidy I have already written a review on Jean Plaidy´s second novel of Mary, Queen of Scots, The Captive Queen of Scots which covers her capture to eventual beahading at the hands of Elizabeth I in Fotheringay castle. This is the first of the Mary books, and equally enthralling as I find all Jean Plaidy´s novels to be. The book recounts Mary´s charmed childhood in the French court as fiancee of the Dauhin, Francis. The beautiful castles and oppulant lifestile of the french court spring from the pages, and as always, Jean Plaidy writes as close to the historical truth as any I have known. When a lance took the life of her father in law on the jousting field, Mary and Francis became King and Queen of France, under the rather unsympathetic guidance of Catherine De Medici, the Queen Mother and the exceptionally ambitous De Guise who also claimed Mary had more right to the English throne than Elizabeth the first, a slight which Elizabeth never forgave or forgot. Unfortunately for Mary, her life may have taken a very different path except that her husband who had always been sickly, died, leaving her a beautiful but unwanted widow. Mary had very little choice but to return to Scotland and claim her throne, a Catholic queen returning to a fiercly prodestant Scotland, ruled by border lords and no place for a lone woman. Additionally, her illegitamate brother, James, had plans of his own for power which left no brotherly loyalty or love for Mary. And thus, from the luxury, ...

Toyota RAV4 1.8 12/02/2011

Where would I be without my Toyota ?

Toyota RAV4 1.8 I can´t remember WHY I bought a Toyota RAV 4, when I went to replace my broken down Escort, all I knew was I needed something reliable, high enough off the ground to deal with the tracks around where I live, and something the dogs could fit in easily. I tried several cars, firstly a Suzuki Vitara (well, I went to try it, after making an appointment with the Salesman, only to find he hadn´t event charged the battery up - so I left, without trying it), then an Opel Fontera (OK, but I am short and could not see over the end of the bonnet), and then the RAV4. I am a woman, I profess I know NOTHING about cars (but I had done some reading, and took a friend with me!). The RAV was perfect for me, I could see over the bonnet, it´s wheelbase was short enough that I was in no danger of ramming other cars (reversing into parking places is NOT my forte), the steering was light and easy to handle, and the turning circle small enough to satisfy even me. It handled brilliantly both on the open road and off road - SOLD! The boot (with the front seats up) was big enough for two dogs and all my luggage when I travelled, and, most important - IT HAS NEVER LET ME DOWN (well, once, but I did leave the headlights on overnight by mistake). It has great all round vision and I have never had a problem with servicing etc. My friend (who has ALWAYS bought Mitzubishi) drove it once - her next car was a Toyota - praise indeed. I have driven many cars in my time, and as I will probably never ...

Mario De Luigi Corrective Lifting Effect Face Powder 11/02/2011

Mario De Luigi, stand corrected...

Mario De Luigi Corrective Lifting Effect Face Powder Mario De Luigi is an italian "stallion" who struts his stuff on U.K. daytime TV shopping channels - but in a gentlemanly way! The "hero" product of his make up range is the Corrective lifting effect face powder. It is packaged (27.50p for 17g) in a black plastic compact, with a mirrored top, and at first glance appears a little strange as it has various colours (purple, pink, yellow, green) mixed in with a rather pale looking base mineral powder. However, once you start using the product (over moisturised skin), it´s miracles begin to work, the pigments naturally blend (using a large stubby brush) with your own skin tone and not only seem to help disguise lines and wrinkles (NOT large ones) but the pigments even out the skintone fantastically. It is important to ensure you buff the product in well all over the face to get the full effect, but I was happy with an even, well toned finish which provided a perfect base for blusher, eyeshadow etc. It did not dry on my skin or cause any other problems with daily use. Easily removed with normal make up remover or wash off cleanser. One down side - I cannot say I noticed a "lifting" effect - but the product was very good and I was happy enough. I did not find that I had to constantly "reapply" during the day as the product lasted well, and best of all for me, it was not either obvious to the eye, nor obvious to my skin that I was wearing foundation, it felt light as air. Although it appears light in the compact, it seems ...

Smashbox Brow Tech & Brush 11/02/2011

Far better results than a pencil....

Smashbox Brow Tech & Brush I had used an eyebrow pencil for years, but I have to admit, I can be heavy handed, and often got a shock once I looked at my "eyebrows" in normal light. Coming from the era where we plucked our eyebrows thinly, (not aware fashions change!), now I am older I not only need to make my brows more defined, thicker looking, but with age, one has a definate "gap" in it. I saw this product demonstrated on the T.V. and because of the shape of the brush (it is angled for ease of use in different parts of the brow), the powder on one side of the black plastic container is micro-fine. After loading (not overloading) the brush with the powder, you are advised to start at the "gaps" in your brows - if you have any, and gently fill them in, then proceed on to the inner and outer end of the brows. When you have achieved the required depth/shape, the other side of the container contains a waxy substance which is applied over the powder and makes the brows look natural and shiny, whilst keeping any "stragglers" in place. I was quite amazed how easy and quick this product was to use, and the subtle effect it produced, I no longer looked "pencilled in" - I was very pleased. Additionally, Smashbox does it in a full range of colours, Taupe (which is what I use and the most universal colour), Blonde, Brunette - darker brown, Grey (great for the older ladies) and a reddish tone which must be a blessing to red haired ladies! Smashbox advises if in doubt, go for the Taupe, and I agree, I ...

Gale Hayman Total Eye Make Up & Facial Cleanser 11/02/2011

Gale Haymen Total Eye Make Up & Facial Cleanser

Gale Hayman Total Eye Make Up & Facial Cleanser I recieved this wonderful cleanser as part of a kit bought from QVC.UK - I had not bought the kit for the cleanser, but once I had used it, I would definately purchase it again. It is very good value for money, removes every trace of make up (including eyes, without the need for special cleanser), It is a wash off product, which I always find more refreshing, and tones at the same time as well - a fantastic, three in one product. Time saving and value for money with excellent results. It leaves the skin squeaky clean without any dry or tight feeling and is kind on the eyes (I have normal skin). I find it removes normal and waterproof eyemake up without causing irritation. I would recommend this product to anyone who is looking for an efficient, quick and value for money cleanser/toner which they can wash off easily. ...

Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer 11/02/2011

Not quite Photo Finish, but not bad...

Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer Smashbox Photo Finish Primer is available in clear and a beigy base with Dermaxyl. I purchased the clear version, as I found large pores were becoming a problem on my cheeks and I wanted something to "smooth" them over before applying my foundation (I usually use a mineral powder foundation. My primer arrived in a pump action clear glass bottle with a black plastic pump top. When you apply one pump to your fingers of the thick, gel like primer, you can feel the velvety texture immediately. You then apply it all over your face SPARINGLY to cover open pores and imperfections in texture. I think it does help improve the texture of the skin (but only as a cosmetic fix) and a good base for foundation. It does not dry a different colour, peel or flake and when you run your fingers over your skin after it has dried, it does feel very velvety. I think it helps to smoothly apply whatever foundation you are using, and assists in keeping it true to colour and long lasting. Mine did last all day until I removed it during my normal nightly cleansing routine. It neither dried or mousturised my skin. However, a miracle product it is not, and, considering the price, has to be a considered purchase. My skin texture is not too bad, it may help ladies who have greater problems than I and be worth a try for them. ...

Aunt Bessies Homestyle Crispy Roast Potatoes 11/02/2011

Aunt Bessie - great for busy mums

Aunt Bessies Homestyle Crispy Roast Potatoes There´s no denying you can´t beat your mum´s roast potatoes, or your own for that matter. However, in today´s hectic world where a lot of mum´s also work, or even if they don´t, are busy enough, Aunt Bessies Roast Potatoes are a real boon. Appart from the fact forget ensuring you have bought the right potatoes for roasting, then lugging them home, peeling and boiling and then eventually putting them in hot fat (at JUST the right temperature), turning them every twenty minutes etc., etc. These frozen ready to roast potatoes are fantastic. Especially in this day and age where many of us live alone and buying 3kg of potatoes is a waste, suddenly roast potatoes need not be a Sunday treat - you can have them anytime, in any amount! They can be found on the freezer shelf in most supermarkets and the photo on the front of the plastic bag does look like how they come out of the oven. So, when you suddenly decide you fancy some roasties, just open the bag, and put as many as you require onto a baking tray (I use foil to protect the tray), cook for approximately 30 mins at 220 degrees (I turn mine once, or maybe twice) and voila, crispy on the outside, light and fluffy on the inside - and no added fat. I have actually begun to prefer these to home made roast potatoes, they are so convenient, crispy and tasty, the thought of peeling potatoes is now just too much! ...

Samy Fat Hair Thickening Serum 11/02/2011

Samy Fat Hair Thickening Serum - oh how I wanted it to work!

Samy Fat Hair Thickening Serum I purchased Samy (from Miami) thickening serum from a T.V. shopping channel where the demonstrations (even though Samy is very much OTT!) seemed to show that this clear gel miraculously made any hair type thicker and fuller. I wasn´t really worried about the packaging - as long as my hair could look thicker and fuller, I would be happy. Being one of many ladies with skinny, scrawny locks, I am on a constant search for that miracle product which will make my hair thicker and fuller, and having tried most of the "on the shelf" products, I decided to give Samy a go. The serum is applied after washing/conditioning (Samy does the whole range, but I just wanted to try out one product before splashing out). You pump a small amount onto your palms and rub it through damp hair before styling. Closely following the instructions as above I applied the serum, then put my hair into rollers and dried it. When I removed the rollers, my hair certainly felt as if it had had a good "setting" product on it, and on first brushing it out, I was quite pleased, but not overcome with joy, it did not seem that much thicker. Then the REAL downside, the next day, my hair (which is normal, not at all greasy) was, as other reviewers have reported, lank, dull and felt greasy - so endeth my experience with Samy products - the search continues. ...
