Spaced - Series 1 (DVD) 20/09/2007

Spaced: The gretest comedy in recent years

Spaced - Series 1 (DVD) Spaced is without doubt one of the funniest and most overlooked sitcoms of the last 10 years. One guarantee i can make without too much trepadation is that anyone between 20 and 35 will love this because it shows the life of a couple of lost 20 somethings not quite sure what to do with their lives and generally dealing with the difficulties of life, OK it is probably a bit weider than most of our lives but other than that it like watching a documentary. The story revolves around Tim Bisley (Simon Pegg) and Daisey Stiner (Jessica Stevenson) who pretend to be a professional couple in order to rent a flat. In essence the show is about them trying to live together, avoid doing work (in daisys case anyway) and attempt to avoid letting the landlady (Julia Deakin) find out that they are not actually a couple at all. To add to this trio is the experimental, and wholely perculiar artist Brian (Mark Heap), Daisys best friend twist (Katy Carmichael) who works in "fashion". Finally there is Tims best friend Mike (Nick frost) the gun mad TA man. Oh and of course like all great comedies (well frasier at least) they have a little dog, colin. The show is written by Simon Pegg, that genious responsible for 'Shaun of the Dead' and 'Hot Fuzz' (where he is joined as co-star by Nick Frost) and Jessica Stevenson (Having written that about Pegg i feel i should tell you what else Jessica has been in but to tell you the truth i have no idea) So whats it all about? well as i mentioned earlier ...

Pirates Of The Caribbean - At World's End (DVD) 29/05/2007

Pirates of the caribbean: At worlds end

Pirates Of The Caribbean - At World's End (DVD) Pirates of the Caribbean : At worlds end is (hopefully) the final installment of this series, although based on the money its made don't be surprised if another does turn up. Firstly i would suggest watching the previous one before going to watch this, because they continue on from each other, and if you don't you'll end up spending the first 20 minutes trying to remember what had happened in the first. Some of the key points to remember from the previous episode (dead mans chest) are that at the end Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) went down with his ship and is now spending the rest of eternity in Davey Jones' locker (he's the weird guy with the tenticles on his face), Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) believes that his love Elizabeth Swann (kiera knightley) is in love with jack after seeing them kiss. While all this is happening the british are on a mission to rid the world of all pirates. With this information you should be able to get to grips with the film alright. As for At worlds End? The last 60 -90 minutes provide all the adventure, excitement and action you are looking for in this film, but thats not a great statement for a film nearly 3 hours long. It takes a while to get going and to understand what is going on, the fact that its a story in 2 parts does create a bit of confusion for a while (especially if like me you haven't seen dead mans chest in almost a year). The first part of this film concentrates on rescuing captain Jack Sparrow from Davey Jones' ...

Spider-Man 3 (DVD) 13/05/2007

Spiderman, spiderman does whatever a spider can

Spider-Man 3 (DVD) But in this case he could have done just a little more. In terms of visual effects and fight scenes this film can not be put down but its just a shame about the rest. To begin witht it starts very slowly, not sure i can actually remember what happened in the first twenty minutes or so, i think we found out how the sand man came into being and a bunch of reminding us about Peter Parkers dead uncle. Once it gets going the chases through the streets are superb and they have definately gone to town on the special effects, at the 50 minute mark i thought the film was about to get going, we've got the sand man and the green goblin and some superb chases and fights through the streets, but then it gets lost somewhere in the middle and turns into a sort of teen movie (and a bad one at that). When i read in an interview with Toby Maguitre that we would get to see the dark side of spiderman in this film i was quite excited but it wasn't quite what i expected. First Peter Parker turns into an emo, because obviously all emos are evil , then there is a cringing scene in which he is strutting down a street in new york trying to look cool but it just doesn't work, he looks like a geeky bloke trying to act cool. Then came Spiderman at his most evil, he goes into a jazz cafe and dances with another girl right in front of MJ (OK not a nice thing to do but i imagined so much more for a dark side of spiderman). I will admit that the last 20 minutes of this film goes some way to fixing ...

First Great Western 04/12/2006

Avoid First Great Western at all costs!

First Great Western I HATE First Great Western trains. you may think that is a little harsh but let me explain just how shocking their service is and then you'll think i've been very reserved with my judgement. Firstly i'll give you some general information. FGW run trains between London Padington and the South West and generally anywhere else in the south west area, this includes Reading, Portsmouth, Southampton, Cardiff, Bristol, Exeter, Plymouth and down into Cornwall. Their trains are generally pretty old, they do have a few new ones but you'll be lucky to get one of those, they never have enough carriages, and although they say they are the most reliable train company in the UK i find it hard to believe. So why am i so negative, i'll give you a few examples of the shocking service. In July i got FGW trains from Portsmouth to Plymouth. On the outward journey the first train broke down, although they did get a replacement relatively quickly i did end up missing my connection at westbury, and because they recently cut the number of trains going through westbury i had to wait over an hour for another train. By the time i eventually made it to Plymouth i was 2 hours late. Now I wasn't all that bitter about this, its one of those things that happens every now and again so i forgot about it, however i did make sure i gave myself a nice big 40 minute gap at Westbury on my return journey, ensuring i couldn't miss it. So on the return journey i got on my train at Plymouth, which did not have ...

General: Iceland 27/11/2006

The land of fire and ice in all its glory

General: Iceland The land of fire and ice is a world like no other, crammed full of increadible natural wonders and beautiful (if not a little sparse) countryside. My holiday to Iceland covered most of this increadible island, from the blue lagoon and explosive geysirs of the south through the stunning ice capped centre of the country into the remote, cold and beautiful northern coastline before descending south to the most increadible location of all, the Vatnajokull ice cap and a once in a life time exploration onto a glacier. This was by far the most exciting, interesting and enjoyable holiday of my life, and i hope you enjoy reading about it. Day 1: Landed at Keflavik airport in snow, not a nice feeling landing when its snowing and its even worse when you get off the plane having left England in sunny september temperatures of 22oC and step out into Icelandic summer temperatures of -2oC. Dont worry if you are planning on going in september its not usually this cold, aparantly this was the first time it had snowed in september for a long time. Once adjusted to the temperatures we headed off to an outdoor swimming pool, yeah good idea that! but this is not any old swimming pool but the blue lagoon, definately the best pool i've ever been in (more info can be found in another review). Then onto Reykjavic. with about 2/3rds of Icelands population living in this city its quite a bit different to the rest of the country. There are trees for a stater (very out of place in this barren ...

Gullfoss & Geysir (Iceland) 26/11/2006

more great sights in Iceland

Gullfoss & Geysir (Iceland) Continuing on my trip around iceland and yet more amazing sites to be seen, and this was only the second day, the first day having been to the blue lagoon (read my other review). Geysir is one of the other big tourist attractions of Iceland although its only a shoirt visit, once you've seen it go off once or twice theres not a lot else to do. However as a geographer and geologist i found it fascinating. Now for a few boring facts. The geyser which you see at geysir isn't actually the great geysir, its actually called strikkur, it fires a stream of hot water 50-100ft into the air every 7 minutes which lis quite a sight to behold. The great Geysir, from which all geysers around the world get their names rarely erupts anymore becasue in the 70s and 80s people used to put soap into it which apparantly triggers it to erupt, sadly this has now caused it to stop erupting at all, so now we never get to see the 250ft jet of water. Well worth a visit because they are amazing things but the visit wont last much more than about half an hour, although on the plus side it is free. So you might as well go and see gulfoss as well. Gulfoss is a waterfall, but not any old waterfall, its the most powerful waterfall in europe. the river is almost perfectly white, this is because it is meltwater from one of the glaciers and as a result is very clean and the turbulence makes it look white, Only problem with it is all of the spray you have to deal with, makes taking a decent picture ...

The Blue Lagoon, Iceland 26/11/2006

The blue lagoon

The Blue Lagoon, Iceland I love Iceland and what better a way to start a trip the land of fire ice than a trip to the blue lagoon. Its beautiful warm blue waters in the open air of Iceland, theres nothing quite so refreshing. Last September we arrived in Iceland in the snow and then got told that our first trip would be to an outside swimming pool, doesn't sound so great so far but believe me it is fantastic. The blue lagoon is a lake created by the waste water from a geothermal power plant, doesn't sound very clean, but its actually a perfectly renewable and clean form of energy. The blue colour is perfectly natural, i believe it is something to do with algae which changes the colour of the water but not entirely sure. seeing as the water has been deep down in the ground for thousands of years being heated by magma, as a result it is very warm (roughly 40oC), as it would have to be to intice you in in temperatures of -4oC. Its a short walk (or run) from the changing rooms to the lagoon, a very nice little walk because the coldness makes the water even nicer. The other benefit of the lagoon is that apparantly the salt deposits on the floor of the lagoon have healing powers and are supposed to be good for your skin (at least thats what they tell you, although it didn't help my eczema). So you can go swimming and put white stuff all of yourself, you'll look well cool!. As well as the lagoon there is also a restaurant and natural treatments and massages available. didn't use any of these ...

Band Of Brothers (Tin) (DVD) 26/11/2006

Band of brothers

Band Of Brothers (Tin) (DVD) Band of Brothers remains one of my favourite TV shows of all time. Its well written, well shot and most importantly its believable. Band of Brothers follows the story of Easy company, an increadible group of paratroopers. The story spans right through from their training, through D-Day, the battle of the bulge and finally the capture of Hitlers Eagles nest. Based on the book by Stephen Ambrose (a fantastic and interesting book by the way, i reccomend it.... but thats for another review) this is a superbly made series which stays very true to the book and the records of the people who lived through it. The series is made up of 10 hour long episodes in a fantastic six disk box set which includes a whole disk of extras. part 1: Currahee This episode sets the background for the characters and although not the most exciting of episodes, it helps you to understand how these "band of brothers" became so close and how that helped them throughout the war. Part 2: Day of days D-Day and before anyone landed on any normandy beaches the members of easy company were being scattered across the countyside. This episode follows luitenant winters and various members of easy and various other companies as they attempt to reach their objective, and they experience their first fighting of the war. This is a well shot episode which shows well the increadible difficulties of the job of the paratroopers. Part 3: Carentan This episode brings to life the true nature of war as easy ...

Top 10 Ways to Make Money Online 26/11/2006

making money online can be done!

Top 10 Ways to Make Money Online Making money on the internet can be difficult, there are loads of scams out there, and anyone who promises you an easy fortune on the internet is lying. but it is possible to make a little money, afterall every little helps. Not all of these give you money however they all provide some sort of financial advantage such as store vouchers 1. Ciao: I would like to thank the unknown person on yahoo answer who put me onto this website as its been my best money earner so far 2. Mylot: this is an american webiste so pays in dollars (not great for us with the exchange rate but can't complain) This is a discussion site, like yahoo answer except you get paid for every answer you post. I was a little sinical of this to begin with but i got my money a few weeks ago so they obviously make enough some how. P.S. You need a paypal account in order to earn money on this site. 3. Greasypalm: This a website which is affiliated with loads of others, they give you money for signing up for certain websites (a lot of which require some sort of payment, but there are some free ones) Best of all though is that loads of websites are on there so for example if you want to buy something from HMV you can click the HMV link in the greasypalm website and you will get 2.5% cashback, i've earnt a couple of quid just by remembering this when i wanted to buy something, which isn't bad considering im a student and cant afford to buy much. 4. ipoints: this website works in much the same way as ...

Drunken Lullabies - Flogging Molly 13/11/2006

the cure to all lifes ills

Drunken Lullabies - Flogging Molly this album has magic powers! Ok maybe a little over the top but i am seriously amazed about what i heard when i put this album on, it has an increadible infectiousness about it like nothing i've ever heard. When i put this album on i was a little down, far too much work and not enough time (but this isn't a psychiatrists couch so you don't care about my problems) despite this i just couldn't help firstly tapping, then swaying and then full on dancing along in my own very special way. This is the perfect music to pick you up out of those winter blues its pure unadulterated fun. This isn't brilliantly written deep meaningful stuff its simply a bunch of slightly drunken Irishmen and women seemingly having a great time, i can imagine that this will be great music to hear live with its mixture of Irish folk and conventional rock / punk music, its got all the traditional irishness about it, the tin whistles, accordians, concertinas, banjos and even some spoons. In summary this is a superb, happy, toe-tapping, dance a long, slightly over the top album that will keep you dancing and singing along till next week. I recommend giving them a go, you wont regret it! ...

Red Dwarf - Series 8 (DVD) 08/11/2006

The End....... The Smeg it is

Red Dwarf - Series 8 (DVD) The final series of the brilliant Red dwarf series ends with the words The end..... The smeg it is. But as time passes it becomes increasingly unlikely that the long promised film will ever be made. So how good is the final series? Compared to some of the earlier series it doesn't compare favourably, but i do believe its an improvement on the 6th and 7th series. And just because its not as good as series 2-5 that doesn't mean this isn't a good series, much improved by the bringing back of Rimmer, it has its truly hilarious moments and some great story lines. Series 8 kicks off where series 7 left us, with the cat flying starbug into a slightly large, but rapidly shrinking Red dwarf leading to them destroying starbug and giving one rat a rather big surprise. Episodes 1, 2 and 3 are actually one very long episode, which you can watch in one go along with previously deleted scenes, making it longer than any movie would have been. This episode is brilliantly written with some fantastic conversations between Lister and Rimmer, part of what made red dwarf great. The basic synopsis of these episodes is that lister, cat, Kryten and Kochanski have crashed back into red dwarf, where the dead crew have been resurrected and the four of them end up in trouble for stealing starbug. The four of them attempt in vain to escape, unaware that they are actually in a computer simulation which is recording everything they do, meanwhile they manage to drag Rimmer down with them after he is ...

The Royle Family - The Queen Of Sheba (DVD) 08/11/2006

Farewell Royle family, we shall miss you

The Royle Family - The Queen Of Sheba (DVD) Is it really five years since the last series of the Royle family, you wouldn't have known it by this one off hour long special, they've lost nothing, this is as good as ever. It starts in the same way, all the family, minus anthony, sat around the TV discussing what they had for tea. The only thing that has changed is that baby David is now little David and my slight confusion Anthony also has a son (remember the final episode of series 3? Emma was pregnant, was here name Emma? i think it was, anyway she is the only one not to appear in this episode, but i didn't even notice till after it finished). The one difference in this episode is the use of music between sections of the episode, something which i think worked pretty well, this may have been used because unlike any other episode this one stretched over a long time, most of the others were just half an hour in the life of the Royles, this was more of a couple of weeks in the life of the Royles. So what happens? If you're asking that then you don't really watch it do you!, although for a change quite a lot actually happens in this hour, but i'll try not to give too much away. I'll start with what we've missed. Nana has finally got her own way and is now living with them, in fact she sleeps in their living room, but she isn't well, and its around this bed that most of the storys take place. Anthony is in a smart suit, no idea what he does but he's managed to get out of there somehow, must be the doing of his rich ...

The Royle Family The Complete First Series (DVD) 08/11/2006

the royal family my ARSE

The Royle Family The Complete First Series (DVD) I was once asked what the royle family is about. The only answer i could give was "its basically just a family sitting in their living room watching the TV", doesn't sound all that great does it. However on some strange unexplainable level it works, and works hilariously at time. What people love so much is the similarities to them and their lives, everybody knows either a Denise, a Dave, a Barbara or a Jim, and i am Anthony, underappretited, only good for making everybody a cup of tea. What i also like about the show is the way that it is shot, most comedies have times when the whole family will be sat around the TV, but it is never part of the show, what the royle family does brilliantly is it includes all of the silent moments that everybody has during conversations, when they just sit there and watch the TV. But on the whole what makes this show funny is the relationships between the characters, you truly believe that this is a normal family because they act and sound just like every family i've ever met. Series 1 is quite obviously the beginning, and when i saw the first episode i wasn't sure about it, what this is it?, they just sit in front of the TV and ask each other what they had for tea? but it grows on you with every passing episode. I was going to give an episode by episode synopsis here, but it just occured to me that it would be rather boring because as far as i can tell it's not possible to make this program sound interesting or funny simply by telling you ...

Frasier - Series 5 (Box Set) (DVD) 25/10/2006

Frasier: Series 5

Frasier - Series 5 (Box Set) (DVD) The Hilarious Frasier Crane returns in his 5th Series (finally), we've been waiting for over 12 months for this series to be released in the UK, and even as i write this i am still waiting for its release. This is not the greatest box set in the world, there will be no extras what so ever, does make you wonder what they've been doing for 15 months? But what do you get for your money? Niles remains infactuated with Daphne, frasier continues to try and fail in love and Eddie still steals the show yet again. For any newcomers to the Frasier world, firstly what have you been waisting your time watching? and secondly a little on the show. The highly succesful spin-off from the equally popular series Cheers is based around the lives of Frasier, his father Martin (an ex-cop with a bullet in his hip) who moved in with him over four years ago, Daphne: Martins Physiotherapist (she's English, so you have to put up with the odd rubbish joke about the royal family), Niles: Frasiers brother, and by far the funniest character in the show andthe late Eddie (sadly passed away earlier this year, Eddie is by far the coolest dog that ever lived). Frasier is hilarious, i can't say any more than that, the fantastic relationships between the characters are what make it a joy to watch time and time again. Frasier has won more emmys than any other TV show. If you need any more proof of its quality then just buy it and watch it, you'll be hooked in no time. In My view the best Episode of the ...
