Invisibobble Traceless Hair Ring 29/11/2017

Not quite invisi bobbles but will do

Invisibobble Traceless Hair Ring This is a product that I hadn’t heard before reading a review about them on Ciao, and curiously led me to purchase some for myself. Reason for purchase I have long hair which I wear back most of the time.  My hair tends to kink very easily when I wear it up too, which can be annoying sometimes if I am planning on going out after work as I cant really wear it down.  I also find that if I am out somewhere and tie my hair back briefly (like when I’m eating lunch or that) my hair kinks almost immediately, so when I heard about these bands, I was very curious. Invisibobbles These are small hair bobbles which look almost like the cords that you would find on a telephone and are made of stretchy plastic. Despite the name, you can get these in different colours as well as ones that are designed to be more invisible when worn in the hair. I bought the clear ones as I have blonde hair but these are also available in different colours such as black. These are quite small when you first purchase them but they are stretchy and over time, these do stretch out more. However, even from the first use, I was able to twist these 3 or so times to secure my ponytail. In use I was sceptical at first, but these really do seem to do what they claim to do.  When I use them, my hair is kink free and there’s no telltale mark on my hair to show it had been tied back.  I do also like the design of these as well, they are very unique and are a nice change to more traditional hair bobbles, ...

Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat 3 Light Peach 29/11/2017

Touche Eclat

Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat 3 Light Peach This is one of my makeup must haves.  I can’t remember how I came to be aware of Touche Eclat, but I do remember my reaction when I first used the concealer.  I was instantly hooked.  Packaging The packaging on this highlighter points to it being a premium product.  The outside box is a gold colour with minimal detail.  There is a small information leaflet inside the box which gives you some information about the product.  Normally the pen itself is gold, again with minimal information on it, but when I bought my last one at Gatwick Airport's duty free, I didn't notice until I got home and checked that I had bought the limited edition leopard print version of the concealer. While this is a limited edition version of the concealer, it does mean that it's unusual and looks very classy but also fashionable in my makeup bag. In use To use the highlighter, you need to click the top of the pen a few times, until you see the liquid starting to come thorough between the brushes.  When I first opened my new one, it was around 12 clicks, and then I needed another couple of clicks to get enough of the highlighter onto the brush.  Having a click method of application means that there is no wastage with this product, as it only dispenses what is needed.  I find the brush makes this very easy to use as I just brush over the areas where I need coverage and then use my fingers to blend in.  What I really like about this is that it not only conceals, it also illuminates.  This ...

The Body Shop Strawberry Puree Body Lotion 28/11/2017

Lovely puree (but not edible)

The Body Shop Strawberry Puree Body Lotion Having oily skin, for a long time I didn't see the point of using body lotions or body butters unless I wanted my skin to be especially soft but as I've gotten older, I have realised that they are becoming something I use more often. This one was a gift from a friend who knew I loved The Body Shop's Strawberry range. This is described as a purée rather than a lotion (probably makes it sound better) and it is probably a quite accurate description of this product as it is certainly thicker than some of the body lotions in my collection. The Body Shop Strawberry Range There are quite a few items available in The Body Shop's strawberry range and these include: * Body Sorbet * Hand Cream * Shower Gel * Body Polish * Lip Butter About This Lotion According to The Body Shop, this is a lightweight body lotion containing real strawberry seed oil. It promises to hydrate dry skin and leave it feeling soft and smooth. The lotion is light and easily absorbed and promises to leave skin with a sweet strawberry scent. In Use This purée is thicker than some body lotions that I have used in the past and has the same rich strawberry scent that I have come to associate with the Body Shop strawberry range. As soon as you open the lid, you can detect the rich strawberry scent of this lotion and while it is strongly scented, it's a scent that I really like. It is a very sweet strawberry scent which could be off-putting to some people but I am a big fan of sweet scents. As I have the ...

Elie Saab L`Eau Couture Eau de Toilette 28/11/2017

L'Eau Couture

Elie Saab L`Eau Couture Eau de Toilette I got a goody bag a while ago from a new eyebrow bar that opened in Belfast and I received a number of perfume samples as part of that goody bag. I am slowly working my way through them as I like to keep them for weekends away, or for holidays as they are handy to throw into my makeup bag for those occasions. The Perfume Elie Saab isn't a brand that I am familiar with and this was a scent that I hadn't actually heard of before I received my sample so I had no preconceptions of the brand The brand describe this perfume as the follows: Discover 'L'eau Couture' or the unique contrast between the sophistication of a couture look and the springtime freshness of an eau. It is a sophisticated and sensual freshness contrasting with the classic repertoire of the genre. * The top notes are fresh citrus notes of Calabrian bergamot and magnolia. * The heart note is orange blossom * Base notes are crunchy green almond and a vanilla infusion. Based on the notes, I thought this would be a scent that would appeal to me as I liked the idea of a citrus scent with a slight sweet base. My Thoughts The first time I sprayed it, I did wonder if the perfume had gone off, even though I hadn't had the sample that long as I thought it has a strange, flowery musk scent. There is an initial burst in which the magnolia is the strongest scent. Within a few minutes, the perfume settles on my skin and the vanilla is the scent that I'm left with, and I'm not really a fan of vanilla scents in ...

Naobay Moisturizing Peeling 27/11/2017

Moisturising, yes, peeling, not so much

Naobay Moisturizing Peeling I have quite a collection of cosmetics and stuff around the house and trying to work my way through it and this was one that I had forgotten about at the back of the cupboard. There isn't a huge amount of information on the packaging of this and it's hard to know exactly what it is. The words moisturing and peeling on the front are a dichotomy to me, surely a product can't be both? I had expected this to be a gentle but very effective scrub from this name. Naobay The Spanish brand Naobay isn't a brand I was aware of before I received this scrub but looking online there is a wide variety of items available from this brand which are promised to combine effective and natural care with environmental friendliness, innovation and design which is something that a lot more people are looking for with their cosmetics these days. The prices are relatively purse friendly and are in line with most 'drugstore' brands. About this scrub The Moisturizing Peeling by NAOBAY is described as being a pleasantly soothing and deeply effective combination of a cleansing milk and a peel. It moisturises while gently removing dead skin cells and impurities using exfoliating granules derived from the peel of the açai palm. The formulation comprised of oils derived from olive and almonds, and including shea butter pamper the skin and help to reduce fine lines, while tigergrass extract soothes the skin. While I'm not the type to only use organic or natural ingredients on my skin, it is worth ...

EOS Smooth Sphere Lip Balm 27/11/2017

Lovely EOS

EOS Smooth Sphere Lip Balm Despite having more than enough lipbalms, when I found a good deal on Eos lipbalms on Amazon, I decided to treat myself. My friend uses these lipbalms and really rated them and I know they have a cult following so I had high expectations for this lipbalm as well. The Lipbalm I bought the flavour strawberry sorbet as I love anything strawberry scented or flavoured. EOS lip balms are being “delightfully flavoured” and packed with antioxidant-rich vitamin E, soothing shea butter, and jojoba oil. The natural lip balms are hypoallergenic, dermatologist tested, and paraben and petrolatum free for soft, smooth, beautiful lips. These are Petrolatum-Free, Paraben-Free & Gluten-Free, although not sure why your lipbalm would have gluten in it? These balms are USDA Certified, 95% organic and 100% natural. There are a variety of different flavours available and each is a different coloured sphere. Some of them include * Coconut Milk * Vanilla Mint * Honeysuckle Honeydew * Pomegranate Raspberry There should be a balm which will suit most people. There are certainly a few that I would consider for purchase in the future, although strawberry was always going to be my first choice. Packaging I like the pink spherical packaging on this lip balm and the pale pink just makes me think of strawberries. It's certainly unique among my lipbalm collection where most of them are just the stick balms, and only the packaging is different on each tube. It is a larger tub than what I am used ...

Colab Original Dry Shampoo 13/11/2017

The Original and best?

Colab Original Dry Shampoo Dry shampoo is one of those things that I use a lot of as I don't like to wash my hair too often. This is one that I hadn't planned on buying but as I needed around £3 for free shipping on ASOS and this was around the right price, I bought it, figuring that I would use it anyway. The Brand COLAB is an award-winning dry shampoo created by a team of beauty insiders, including international blogger Ruth Crilly. To be honest, the name means nothing to me and I don't really find myself normally wowed by beauty bloggers either but I wouldn't let that put me off either. This dry shampoo is described by Ruth as a runway ready formula absorbs oil & refreshes roots with a residue-free, lightweight finish. It also leaves a gorgeous veil of fashion fragrance so now your hair can smell as fabulous as it looks. The dry shampoo is available in a few different scents: *Exotic *Paradise *Sheer and Invisible *Active *Fresh Dry *Original *Tropical You can also get extreme volume dry shampoos in the range. The Dry Shampoo COLAB's Original fragrance Dry Shampoo is said to give hair an instant wow-factor with a 'Too cool for School' vibe and an effortlessly cool, bergamot and rose scent. This particular dry shampoo is the original scent with bergamot, rose, musk and magnolia. This dry shampoo works the same as any other dry shampoo I have ever used – I don't think there are any hints or tricks that make a dry shampoo more effective! To use you just Shake the can well, section dry ...

Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturising Lip Colour Balm 29/10/2017

Chubby Sticks

Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturising Lip Colour Balm Clinique’s chubby sticks have been on my wish list for a long time.  Hints to friends and family hadn’t worked so when I heard you could get one free with Glamour, I went in search of the magazine. I was very keen to try out these, particularly as I have read so many positive reviews online about Chubby Sticks. The one that I will be reviewing today is the 'Super Strawberry' shade. About Chubby Sticks According to Clinique, these crayons promise to relieve dry, cracked lips and to provide moisture as well as a slight sheen. According to Clinique, they contain comforting oils and butters to relieve dry, cracked lips and Vitamin E to prevent further damage and to provide defence against environmental damage. The sheer shades can be layered up so you can mix and match to create your own unique lip colours. At the time of writing this review, there were around 20 shades available of chubby sticks from light pinks, reds and purples so there should be a colour to suit everyone in the range. Packaging These chubby sticks look and feel like chunky crayons with a tip that reminds me of those chunky Crayola crayons you get for young children. Each balm is a similar colour to the contents and my strawberry coloured balm comes in a bright red tube. The lid is easily removed to get to the balm and you can twist the silver top of the crayon to get more or less of the balm. I unscrewed mine completely and these don't seem to contain as much product as I had expected though I am ...

Collection 2000 Pure Gloss 08/10/2017

More of a 'lipsticky' than a lip gloss!

Collection 2000 Pure Gloss I have been having a big clear out of some of the cosmetics that are cluttering up my drawers in an attempt to see if having less clutter around me helps me both physically and mentally as I know I can be a little bit of a hoarder than I should be. This was an unopened lipgloss that I found on a drawer and while I am aware that it is an old gloss, I thought I would write this review as the gloss is still available, although not in the same packaging as what I have. Collection Collection 2000 as I always knew it as growing up was a brand that I always considered cheap and wasn't a brand that I really bought anything from as I always preferred Rimmel and Natural Collection in my teenage years. However, while I like to have decent foundations and powders, some other items I'm not as bothered by and I have found that some Collection items have more than surpassed my expectations. Packaging While I can't be sure when I bought this gloss, it still has the name on it as Collection 2000 on it so it must be quite old. It is very simple packaging with a clear tube and silver writing stating the brand and a few bubbles for some reason? The lid is screw off and it is a slanted tube so you can apply this straight to your lips from the tube. There is a small sticker on the back that states the colour and while it can peel off (to see ingredients I'm guessing) mine seems firmly stuck. This gloss should be used within 12 months of opening. According to the packaging, this is a ...

Driclor 01/10/2017

Driclor - a summer saver

Driclor Sometimes there are things that really work for you but you're reluctant to write reviews about them and this is one of those items but since it costs around £6 (a lot more than my usual deodorant) I thought that a review of this deodorant after the summer period would maybe help someone. I am one of those people who is paranoid about smelling sweaty, particularly it summer when I can get very warm. I was looking for a decent deodorant as I was fed up with trying various ones without much success and thought that the more heavy duty ones would be my best bet. About Driclor Driclor works in the same way as most regular anti-perspirants, by blocking the pores of the skin. It's just a higher-strength version of what's available in the high street. The active ingredient of Driclor is known as aluminium chloride hexahydrate. This is the same ingredient as many regular antiperspirants, but at a concentration of 20%, whereas in normal anti-perspirants the concentration does not usually exceed about 5%. Packaging There seems to be two different varieties available of this roll on and I'm not sure if one is just older packaging as I have been using both on and off for the past few years so while I am assuming the bright packaging is the newer one. This deodorant is slightly different to other roller ball deodorants I have used in the past in that you have to assemble this yourself. It comes in two parts which are both sealed and then you screw them both together. Not sure ...

Sorting Out Billy - Jo Brand 24/09/2017

Sort things out!

Sorting Out Billy - Jo Brand My friend lent me this book recently and it was one that I was really looking forward to reading as I do like Jo Brand and find her quite funny so had high hopes for this book and was really looking forward to reading it, hoping for a funny yet touching read. About the Book There are 4 main characters in this book. Three friends, Sarah, Martha and Flower and Sarah's boyfriend Billy who as the title of the book suggests, is a focal point of the book. Martha has lived under the shadow of her sanctimonious vicar father for most of her life and longs to rebel. She finds herself seven months pregnant by one of three possible blokes (and even the name she chooses for her son is designed to wind up her father, Flower, as her name sugfgests is a hippy with a dream of being a stand up comedienne but she is finding that her career is more a sit-down after some nasty encounters with south London's finest hecklers Sarah loves her boyfriend Billy. He considers himself to be a lad, a good laugh although he is quick tempered and uses his fists to argue this point. After another 'accident' involving Billy's temper, Sarah's face and a night in the A&E, Martha and Flower decide that it's time to take action. Billy always seems one step ahead of them and finds their meddling funny but will Sarah eventually see sense? My Thoughts As I said above, I had high hopes for this book and while I wouldn't say that it was disappointing, this book certainly wasn't as good as I had expected it to ...

The Body Shop Strawberry Body Polish 10/09/2017

polishing my skin

The Body Shop Strawberry Body Polish I am fortunate in that my friends know that I love anything strawberry scented and I normally end up with lots of strawberry scented bath stuff every year for Christmas and my birthday.  I got this in a strawberry scented gift set from a friend last Christmas.  The Body Polish This is one of those products that has confused me slightly as I'm not quite sure if it's a shower gel or a scrub or a bit of both. Personally, I use mine as an occasional scrub and find it's particularly handy to take with me if I am away overnight and want to make sure my skin looks it's best without dragging a pile of different lotions and potions with me. The Body Shop describe this as a product to Smooth and soften your skin as you gently buff away dead skin cells with our Strawberry Body Polish. Your skin will feel more silky-soft and nourished with long lasting moisture. It is a body exfoliator which helps to gently refines skin and leave your skin should feel feel softer and smoother This contains cold-pressed strawberry seed oil and Community Trade honey from Ethiopia. Packaging The packaging fits in well with the rest of the of the strawberry range in The Body Shop with a strawberry in the centre of the Body Shop logo. It is in a long tube with a fip cap and while the top of the tube is a dark red, it;s clear towards the bottom so you saw see how much of the product you have left which I always find very handy. In Use This is a quite thick red coloured gel with some scrubby ...

Boots Extracts Fairtrade Cocoa Butter Body Butter 27/08/2017

Lovely body butter

Boots Extracts Fairtrade Cocoa Butter Body Butter I received this body butter as part of a set for my birthday.  I have been using The Body Shop’s body butters for years and really liked them, and if I’m honest, it wouldn’t have crossed my mind to buy this Boots branded body butter myself as I was always happy with The Body Shop ones.  It's only now that I'm approaching my late 30's that I am noticing that I need to use some body lotion or body butter after showering as I tend to have fairly oily skin and always thought previously that I didn't really need them. The Butter According to Boots, their Extracts range has been developed to make a real difference. This nourishing Extracts Body Butter contains cocoa butter derived from the theobroma cacao seed. Shea butter is used in the Boots Extracts range for its beneficial moisturising properties. Boots Fairtrade shea butter is produced by communities in West Africa, and by using this source Boots can help support their future prosperity. There are a variety of different scents available in this range and these do rival those available in The Body Shop. These include the following: * Strawberry * Mango * Coconut * Almond The range also includes matching shower gels and sugar scrubs (the sugar scrub is one that I have previously reviewed) as well as body sprays and body lotions. Prices are around £6.50 for the scrub, £4 for the shower gels and £3.50 for the body sprays. This butter should be used within 24 months of opening. Packaging This butter comes in a tub ...

Native by Yellow Door, Belfast 20/08/2017

Going native in Belfast

Native by Yellow Door, Belfast This is one of those places that I discovered by accident as I was out with a friend and we couldn't quite make up our minds where to eat and I had heard good reports about the canteen at The Mac so we tried there, not knowing it was now part of Yellow Door, a Northern Ireland deli chain. We had a fantastic meal though so when we were going back to an event at The Mac, we decided to book a table. About Native NATIVE™ by Yellow Door is a new café and bar concept at the iconic MAC building in Belfast which has firmly established itself as one of Europe’s most significant purpose-built multidisciplinary arts venues, offering an outstanding programme of events and exhibitions over 3 art galleries and 2 theatres. The native website describes the concept of the restaurant as being open for breakfast, lunch and casual pre-theatre dining with tasting plates of local deliciousness. We showcase locally produced food and drink, and have a desire to get the very best out of it. We even grow our own herbs and salad leaves within the MAC outdoor spaces. Some of the above paragraph has been taken from the Native website. Location Native by yellow door is located inside The Mac, short for Metropolitan Arts Centre, a recently opened gallery and exhibition space in Belfast, located in St Anne's Square in the cathedral quarter, close to the city centre. I always drive as I live outside Belfast so somewhere convenient for parking is always essential for me and I was able to park at ...

Last Man Down. The Fireman's Story - Richard Picciotto 29/07/2017

Last man down

Last Man Down. The Fireman's Story - Richard Picciotto I have written before that I have some interests that could be considered macabre by others and my interests in disasters such as 9/11 could be considered odd by some people. I read this book years ago but when I saw it in a charity shop recently, I decided to buy another copy and to read it again, even though I had read the same story from a few different sources over the years, I thought that it would be an interesting read. The Book This book tells the amazing story of FDNY Battalion Chief Richard "Pitch" Picciotto who has just signed on to his job on the morning of September 11th. Thinking it would be a normal day, things were quickly shattered for Pitch and his team when it became apparent that things would never be the same for the FDNY. Pitch had worked the evacuation of the North Tower of the Twin Towers after the 1993 bomb there and saw how tough it was, so he volunteered his services as he had prior knowledge of the buildings and had recently written a piece about firefighting in high rise buildings. Within minutes he was at Ground Zero as the Twin Towers burned and then began to buckle. Having used an elevator that was still in service, he had managed to get fairly high up in the tower when there was a massive roar that consumed the building. As the stairwells were dark, they had no idea what the sound was but within minutes it became clear that the South Tower had collapsed and the roar has been the building coming down. Pitch made the call for firemen and ...
