Aldi Lacura 3-in-1 Facial Cleansing Wipes 29/01/2017

Lovely Lacura

Aldi Lacura 3-in-1 Facial Cleansing Wipes We don't have Aldi stores in Northern Ireland although there are branches south of the border, although my closest store is about 40 miles away. My mum had been talking about visiting Aldi for a few things so I offered to drive down for some shopping, including some grocery shopping in Aldi. I picked up a packet of these wipes as I find wipes very handy when I am wearing makeup and come home late and at 79 cents a pack, figured that if they weren't any use, at least I hadn't wasted much money. The Wipes Unlike most wipes that I have bought in the past, there are 30 wipes in this pack so you get an extra 5 in a pack compared to some other brands. Each wipe measures around 200mmx200mm and are a pale colour with what looks like a slightly raised lattice effect on each wipe. Despite these being cheap, each wipe was very moist and although these aren't as soft as some brands I have used in the past, they are not so rough that it can irritate my skin. The wipes that I bought are for normal skin and are a 3 in one wipe which are said to cleanse, tone and moisturise your skin. The wipes are said to be soft and soothing on your skin and contain extracts of aloe vera and Allantoin which helps to soften and protect while actively soothing skin. Allantoin also stimulates cell regeneration promoting healthy skin.  Packaging These wipes look quite plain to be honest and didn't really stand out for me, my reason was more because I had heard such good things about the Lacura brand ...

The Fault in Our Stars - John Green 15/01/2017

The fault in our stars is....

The Fault in Our Stars - John Green I had wanted to watch the film of this book for quite a while and finally watched it a few weeks ago while having a duvet day with a friend. I loved the film although it was very sad and hadn't really intended to read the book but finding it in a charity shop for £1, I thought i would give it a read. The Story The title of this book is inspired by Act 1, Scene 2 of Shakespeare's play Julius Caesar, in which the nobleman Cassius says to Brutus: "The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, / But in ourselves, that we are underlings." The main character in the story is Hazel Grace Lancaster who has terminal thyroid cancer that has spread to her lungs a form of cancer with a limited prognosis. Her mother is convinced she is depressed though and that a group of other young cancer suffers is a good place for her to go to. At this group she meets Augustus (or Gus) who seems to be in recovery from osteosarcoma. One thing that brings the teens together is a book An Imperial Affliction, about a young girl with cancer written by Peter Van Houten which finishes very suddenly. Hazel is desperate to find answers to what happens the characters after the book ends and it appears that she is very close to finding out when Gus uses his 'wish' to meet the author. However, it is true that sometimes you really shouldn't meet your heroes.... My Thoughts As I had saw the film, I knew what the book was about and there were large sections that are the same in both the book and the film. ...

L'Occitane Shea Vanilla Hand Cream 23/12/2016

L'Ovely!

L'Occitane Shea Vanilla Hand Cream I have quite a few samples lying around the house and I have been trying to make an effort to use them up and also to write reviews on some of them in the process. This is a sample I got a quite ago (can't remember where but I'm fairly certain it was in a beauty box) but as I knew L'Occitane was a premium brand, I had been keeping this as a 'good' hand cream for special occasions, if that makes sense. I also had read many reviews about how good their hand creams were and also the fact that this included Shea which is an ingredient that my skin really seems to like, I had high hopes for this cream. About the Hand Cream This Shea Vanilla Bouquet Hand Cream (to give it it's full name) has a high concentratin of shea butter (around 20%) and helps to protect, nourish and soften the hands. The scent is descrived by the brand as a sweet and captivating scent reminiscent of a vanilla flower. Shea Butter is an ideal beauty ingredient which helps nourish and protects their skin and hair. Since the 1980’s, L'OCCITANE uses shea butter from Burkina Faso, harvested in a sustainable and fair trade partnership with the women who produce it. Packaging I do really like the packaging on L'Occitane's hand creams,. There is something very traditional and old fashioned (in a nice way) about the simple packaging which does also manage to convey that this is a premium product. The yellow and brown colour scheme puts me in the mind of something natural and the colours just scream vanilla ...

graze.com 03/12/2016

Something for me to Graze on

graze.com I had read so many reviews about Graze boxes and while a lot of people seemed to like them, the cost was often a negative point.  When I saw an offer on Wowcher giving four Graze boxes for £5, I decided to snap it up, thinking it would give me a taster without spending too much money. What is a Graze box? Graze boxes are small tubs of healthier snacks that you can get delivered either weekly or fortnightly.  You can get them delivered to your home or office, and they say they are ideal for desk based people who may be temped to wander to the vending machine for chocolate or crisps; instead, you can much something healthier in your graze delivery.  I decided to get mine delivered to my home address though, as my snacking seems to be more in the evenings, and I wanted something healthier I could snack on.  Varieties of Graze Boxes It would be very difficult to explain everything that is available on the site but there are a wide selection of items available and there is something for everyone on there. Their range includes nibbles such as nuts, seeds and other snacks such as pretzels and croutons. Sweet treats include cookies, fudge and their afternoon tea selection which includes lemon and poppyseed cakes and carrot cake. Flapjacks and brownies are also available. My experiences I had initially decided to get one box a week, so at least I would have some healthy snacks for the week rather than wandering around in search of crisps.  Once I had signed up for the ...

Nivea Soft 20/11/2016

Decent moisturiser, just a few small niggles...

Nivea Soft While I have a normal skincare routine that works for me, when I get free samples of things, I'm always keen to try them out to see if things can be improved. When I got a free sample of this moisturiser in the post, I was keen to try it out as I have a high opinion of the Nivea brand, particularly moisturisers although I find that in general their moisturisers can be a little rich for my oily skin. The Moisturiser Nivea soft is described by the brand as an intensive moisturising crème for everyday use on face, hands & body. This unique formulation is quickly absorbed, leaving skin soft & supple. Jojoba Oil nourishes the skin whilst Vitamin E protects its natural moisture balance. Packaging My sample pot of this moisturiser is a 25ml pot with a screw off lid. The colour scheme of white and blue puts me in the mind frame that this will be a very moisturising product and that it will leave my skin feeling soft without any irritation. It's very clean and crisp and most of the 'important' information is hidden on the bottom of the tub but this just gives it a classic look and one I associate with the Nivea brand in general (after all, it's what's inside that counts really). In Use As soon as I unscrewed the lid, I could immediately detect the familiar scent that I associate with Nivea moisturisers and it was a quite reassuring scent for me as it is one of those scents that I have been familiar with for most of my life to be honest. It was a real nostalgic effect for ...

Five Guys, Belfast 15/10/2016

My first experience of Five Guys - the burgers I mean!

Five Guys, Belfast I had heard so many positive comments about Five Guys and their burgers that I was quite excited when it was announced that they were opening a Belfast store. I quite liked the way that you got to choose what you got on your burger as I am quite fussy and I don't like things like onions and get fed up with getting things I didn't want on burgers. About Five Guys Five Guys is described as a no-frills burger joint that focuses on serving burgers and fries in a clean, friendly environment. From its meat and cheese, to where its bacon and potatoes come from, to the cooking methods, oil types and temperatures, Five Guys’ focus is always on quality. Five Guys began in 1986 when Jerry and Janie Murrell offered the advice to their four sons to "Start a business or go to college." The boys chose to start a business, and the Murrell family opened a carry-out burger joint in Arlington, Va. Now, almost 30 years later, there are over 1,300 locations across North America, the United Kingdom with the first Northern Ireland location opened early December 2015. Location The Belfast restaurant is located in the Victoria Square shopping centre and is in a quite central location on Level 1 (which is actually the third floor above the lower and upper ground floors) so is very easy to find. The restaurant's prime position above the main open part of the shopping centre does mean that this place is easy to find as you tend to see it if you are looking up towards the dome from a lower ...

After You - Jojo Moyes 09/10/2016

After You

After You - Jojo Moyes After reading the book Me Before You and also seeing the film, when I heard there was a sequel which followed up on Louisa's life, I knew it was something that I would have to read. Story It is kind of hard to explain this book without some spoilers from the first book/film to be honest so if you are still to read the book or see the film and don't want to know exactly what happens, skip the next few paragraphs. We meet up with Lou again around a month after her fateful trip to Switzerland. Lou was given some money by Will that was enough to set her on the right path but not quite enough that she would be living comfortably which is why we meet Lou living in London and working in an Irish themed bar for some extra cash.  Despite all of the promises to Will, Lou is existing rather than living her life as she still feels so numb and there are a lot of people who don't understand why she made the decisions that she did, especially in Lou's sleepy hometown. It has also left Lou estranged from her family although fate has a way of bringing them back together again. While Lou doesn't see her life changing much, a teenager called Lily is about to come crashing into her life and will turn everything upside down. My Thoughts I had very high hopes for this book both because I love Jojo Moyes as an author and also because I had lived the first book in the series. While it was nice to get an update on Lou and the characters from the first book, this one fell slightly flat in my ...

Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation 02/10/2016

The Holy Grail of foundations

Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation I had been using the Estee Lauder Double Wear Light for around two years and loved it as a foundation. I did find though that on those days where my skin looked it's worst, I needed to really layer up the foundation and I was wondering what the Double Wear would be like as I knew it was a heavier coverage foundation. As I was coming to the end of my light foundation and I also had a few events where I wanted to look presentable, I went into my local Debenhams to investigate the Double Wear foundation. The Foundation Estee Lauder's Double Wear is apparently the The UK's NO. 1 Foundation. This foundation promises 15-hour staying power which means that your makeup will stay flawless all day. This worry-free, long-wearing makeup stays fresh and looks natural through heat, humidity, nonstop activity. Won't change colour, smudge or come off on clothes. Feels lightweight and comfortable. Now the flawless look you see in the morning is the look you keep all day. With over 40 shades to choose from, there should be something there for almost everyone. In Use After a lot of money wasted over the years with foundations that didn't suit me, I prefer to get matched in-store and hoping that I don't look like an oompa loompa when I next wear the foundation that I have bought as sometimes I think it looks good and when I get it home, I hate it. The foundation that I have is True Beige and is a slightly warm biscuit colour which suits my skintone. I have found that with some ...

Alpecin Caffeine Shampoo 11/09/2016

Caffeine for my hair

Alpecin Caffeine Shampoo I've noticed a few changes since I hit my mid-30's and one of these was my hair. While I have quite dry, damaged hair through dying it anyway, it seemed to look thinner and I seemed to (in my mind anyway) be losing a lot of hair so I thought I would try this shampoo to see if it made any difference. While my friend uses the Plantur range with some good results, for some reason, my mind was drawn more to the Alpecin range so I purchased a bottle from Amazon. The Shampoo As the name suggests, Alpecin caffeine shampoo contains caffeine that can help to stimulate hair growth directly from the roots. Washing daily with Alpecin C1 shampoo immediately provides the hair roots with a boost of caffeine. Alpecin Caffeine shampoo Hair Energizer is detectable after being left on for as little as 120 seconds. If left on longer, more caffeine will be absorbed into the scalp. Alpecin Caffeine penetrates even though the shampoo is rinsed out. In just a short time (120 seconds), caffeine travels along the hair shaft directly into the hair follicles. If the shampoo is left on for longer, the caffeine will also penetrate into the scalp. This shampoo does not contain any conditioning agents so your hair will immediately have more grip. The Alpecin range also contains a sport version of this shampoo and also a version that also fights dandruff as well as providing the hair with a caffeine boost. There are also hair liquids available which also aim to help with hair loss but I thought I ...

Estee Lauder Lucidity Translucent Pressed Powder 27/08/2016

Lucidity in a compact

Estee Lauder Lucidity Translucent Pressed Powder I have quite bad skin due to PCOS and while I don't like to wear makeup all the time, I do like to make an effort sometimes and I tend to buy the expensive brands of makeup and have found through trial and error that Estee Lauder foundations and powders really make a difference to my skin. The Powder According to Estee Lader's website: This pressed powder gives skin a luminous finish that minimises the look of lines and wrinkles. Special ingredients diffuse light as it hits your skin, creating a "soft-focus" effect that visibly smooths the appearance of your skin. Comes with a luxurious puff. They recommend using a pressed powder to finish your look or for touch ups on shiny areas during the day. This powder is available in three shades: * light * light/medium * medium Packaging I quite like the chunky packaging on this compact. It is made with thick plastic and feels reassuringly heavy in my hand and I am confident that if I dropped this, it wouldn't completely shatter, though I hope I don't have to ever find out for sure. This powder is supplied in a compact which measures aproximately 9cm by 9cm. It is fairly bulky but the inclusion of a sponge and a mirror makes this ideal for touch ups on the move. The compact is made of thick plastic which is reassuring – after all, after you spend almost £27 on a compact you want it to withstand the occasional drop or knock. I also liked how when I first opened the compact the Estee Lauder logo was embossed on the compact ...

BaByliss PRO 235 Styler 06/08/2016

My new straighteners

BaByliss PRO 235 Styler Why did I buy these? My old faithful straighteners seemed to be on their last legs, though considering they were about 5 years old, it was to be expected. They didn’t seem to heat up as much as they used to and it seemed they were dragging slightly through my hair. With that in mind, my mum offered to buy me a new pair for my birthday. I have a close friend who is a hairdresser and she recommends the Babyliss Pro straighteners, as she uses them in the salon. My old straighteners were also made by Babyliss, and I thought that they were as good (if not better) than GHD’s. These also have a five year warranty, as opposed to the two years that you usually get with GHD's. These straighteners are a hot pink colour and have rounded plates so they can be used to both straighten and curl hair. I’ll admit that the colour was one of the things that first attracted me to these straighteners as I am a big fan of pink things in general. What's in the box? When you open the box for the first time, the straighteners are wrapped in a heat protection mat. The mat is black with a hot pink trim to match the straighteners. The mat also has hooks inside the mat which makes it ideal for travel. The fact that these are multi-voltage is also handy when travelling, as it guarantees that these will work well abroad. The straighteners themselves are very light, with a long swivel cord. They are a hot pink colour, with slightly rounded edges. These straighteners are 25% longer than most on the ...

Me Before You - Jojo Moyes 31/07/2016

Me Before You

Me Before You - Jojo Moyes Despite having a huge pile of unread books at home, when a book catches my eye in a charity shop, it has to come home with me. After reading a fantastic Jojo Moyes book about a year ago, I had been on the lookout for more of her books so when I saw this in a charity pile of books in a shop, it was mine. About The Book There are two main characters in this book and they are both very different people. Lou is a happy go lucky person who doesn't have a great deal of ambition in life. She is happy in her job in a cafe and her relationship with her boyfriend Patrick, although not perfect she is comfortable in the life that she has. Will has an enviable life with his high powered job, frequent holidays and glamorous lifestyle. Until one day an accident changes his life forever. After she loses her job, Lou accepts a job working as Will's aide simply because the money is good and she has no idea that this simple job move will change the course of her life completely. This story is told mainly from the viewpoint of Lou although we do get some chapters from Will's viewpoint and a chapter from the viewpoint of Lou's sister Treen.  This meant that you got some elements of the story that may have been missed otherwise. My Thoughts I had loved the last Jojo Moyes book that I had read and this one was no exception. I love the style of Jojo Moyes books and despite this book having its roots firmly in what I would describe as chick lit, it does also tackle some serious issues. I ...

Bleach London Silver Shampoo 25/06/2016

Silver Shampoo

Bleach London Silver Shampoo I have dyed blonde hair which has a tendency to go brassy and slightly yellow after colouring. I had used Pro-Voke's Touch of Silver range but found the shampoo did leave my hair feeling quite dry. I complimented my friend on her highlights a few weeks ago and was surprised when she told me that she hadn't had her highlights done In months and instead credited this shampoo as to why her hair looked so good. Bleach London Bleach London are a salon in London which also have their own range of home dyes, colour care shampoos/conditions and styling products as well as some home bleaching kits. The range is readily available in larger Boots stores as well as online. About this shampoo This shampoo is described as “For blondes that constantly strive for whiter, brighter colour” and it is advised that you use this shampoo every other wash to keep an ashy blonde tone. This shampoo contains wheat proteins and vitamin B5 to moisturise hair and it promises to “dismiss brassy tones and eliminate unforgivable yellow on the packaging. Packaging This shampoo comes in a chunky bottle with a screw top lid. The graffiti background and the fonts used on this shampoo immediately give me the impression that this is a hip, young brand. While I find that the screw lid can be slightly inconvenient when I have wet hands in the shower, I prefer this over the push to open lid that I had with the Pro-Voke one as I found their bottles always leaked. While this one could be slightly hard ...

The Body Shop Vitamin E moisture Cream 12/06/2016

Vitamin E moisture

The Body Shop Vitamin E moisture Cream This moisturiser was a present from my mum but having read so many positive reviews online about this, I was very happy that she had chosen this for me. A man named Dave - Dave Pelzer 24/04/2016

A Man Named Dave...

A man named Dave - Dave Pelzer I got a pile of books cheap a while ago in a charity shop and this was one of those that I chose as I had read the first two books about Dave's life and thought that this would be an interesting read. About Dave Dave Pelzer was born in San Francisco, California, and was the second of five boys. His books describe the abuse he suffered as a small child for several years by his mother, who he said considered it to be a game. His teachers stepped in on March 5, 1973, wherein 12-year-old Pelzer was placed in foster care. In 1979, aged 18 he joined the U.S. Air Force in served in the Gulf War. Pelzer married in the 1980s to his first wife, Patsy (a pseudonym), with whom he had a son Stephen. Pelzer and Patsy divorced and he later married his second wife, Marsha, who was his editor. There are three books in the Dave Pelzer story: * A Child Called It * The Lost Boy * A Man Named Dave About the book This is the final book in the trilogy about David's early life. At the start of the book we are introduced to an 12 year old Dave and the conditions in which he is living. By thet stage, he wasn't considered part of the family and instead was reduced to sleeping on an old army cot without any blankets, even in the middle of Winter and he had to scavenge for any morsels of food as he wasn't being fed either. If he didn't go whatever chores were given to him by his mother, or she had the slightest hint of any misdemeanour, he was punished. After a beating that got so bad that ...
