BT Internet 22/10/2001

BT INTERNET COSTS A PACKET....

BT Internet Bt Anytime is exactly what it says on the ‘Tin’. It’s internet access that’s provided by BT, in which you can use anytime of the day or night, in effect 24-hour access. This is an opinion of BTinternet Anytime, seen as there is an alternative for Bt Surf Time. ***CONNECTION /RELIABILITY*** Connection to Bt internet is always relatively good, every time it connects. There have been a few instances over the year in which it just wouldn’t connect, but a few times in a year is nothing much to complain about. Connection is always quick, and the dial-up software never has to re-dial. This is one impressive point about BT internet, it’s never says that it’s too busy for you to connect. Pleasing to know if you have just come from using ISP’s which offer a completely free service, in which it takes you 20 to 30 connection attempts to get connected (That is if you haven’t given up by then). ***PRICE*** Price of BT Internet is completely up to you, in my ways. There are several differing tariffs available so the internet and the price suit you needs down to a tee. This is the cost for BT Internet Anytime; * DAYTIME ACCESS RATE; No internet call charges * EVENING AND WEEKEND ACCESS RATE; No internet call charges * PRICING; £14.99 per month * EMAIL; 10 e-mail addresses (POP3 & Web-based) * WEBSPACE; 50MB ***CONNECTION SPEED*** Connection to the BT internet server is relatively fast, but there ...

ISS (International Superstar Soccer) (PS2) 21/10/2001

ISS, IT'S NO EVOLUTION....

ISS (International Superstar Soccer) (PS2) ISS on the Playstation 2 was met with great excitement, after seeing the quality of the ISS games available on the massively underpowered PS1 and N64 (compared to the Playstation 2). These games were the best footie games ever, good graphics and extreme realism. But somehow the game has gained the same problem as the rest of the PS2’s launch titles. Yes its has the ISS name, but it’s not quite as good as the Evolution series/ ***GRAPHICS*** The graphics are mind-blowing realistic, everything makes you want to have a second look. The players all look spot on but the games developers seem do have just concentrated on some of the well known players. The rest just seem to be very plane faced and have plane dark hair. ***PHYSICS*** The physics/movement of the players has obviously gone to waste, they seem to have taken on the FIFA way of doing things. The players may be motion captured but the still act like robot, every things the same for each kick, there is no variation. This is a little disappointing but I think things will get better with new generations of this game in the future. I was though impressed with the ball physics especially in the rain/snow and the goalkeeper reactions. There are some of the best seen and so are a credit to the game. These along don’t make this a brilliant game, it need to be an all-round package. ***TEAMS*** This game has a wide variety of international sides, there’s all that you would ever ...

Clarityn Allergy 21/10/2001

18 YEARS OF HAYFEVER, THEN CAME A CURE

Clarityn Allergy Hayfever, something that we all hate, but just have to get on and live with it. Yes it’s terrible, yes it wrecks your summer and can get embarrassing, but there is just no point in just standing around moaning and moaning. We/us have just got to make the most of it, we just can’t let it win, we must go into combat. I have suffered with hayfever all my life and so have had 18 years of experience with it, and my current concoction of dugs are the best that I have had, things do get easier. **SO WHAT IS HAYFEVER?** Hayfever put simply is a allergic reaction to pollen, may it be in the form of tree pollen or grass, grass being the biggest cause of my hayfever. During the summer period I suffer with very close to having the flu or a cold, lasting for about 3 months though. I get a constant ‘Runny nose’ with constant sneezing fits. I also get very itchy eyes, that if I itch them they get swollen and very sore. The end up feeling like the are full of grit. So anyone who gets these kind of hayfever symptoms will wondering just how to minimise their effects. This is what I do each summer, these are my tips; **RUNNY NOSE/SNEEZING** Every day from about the start of may until September I take Clarityn (non drowsy) tablets. These can be obtained on prescription and are brilliant for combating Sore eyes, running nose and sneezing. They are also available from most good pharmacies e.g. Boots, but are very expensive (about £5 for 10 ...

Burger King 21/10/2001

YOU WOULD BE MAD TO EAT A BURGER HERE...

Burger King We all now exactly what I mean when I say ‘Burger King’, this further implies the popularity of the restaurants and how they have, been very popular in the recent past. For those who have been hibernating for the last 20 years, Burger King is a fast food chain that has established itself here in the United Kingdom as, well as many other countries of the world. ***SO IS THE FOOD ANY GOOD?*** The food in Burger King in my opinion isn’t too bad. Basically the same rule applies ‘You get what you pay for”. A meal containing a large burger, chips and a soft drink isn’t bad for £3.50. Though there isn’t any guarantees of the quality of the meat, be that chicken or beef; and funny though it is, there’s now way of telling if they really have put ‘chicken muck’ in the Mc chicken sandwich. Something that I have always found when eating at Burger King, is that when I came out from having my meal I still feel hungry, chips are also heavily salted so that you get a larger drink and so pay more. Prices are though a little more expensive than MC Donald’s which offer a better service and better food, a downfall of Burger King. ***WHAT’S THE SERVICE LIKE?*** As I have said at the beginning of my opinion, service is although not the best . Service it relatively quick many due to the lack of quality of the meals. Large amounts are left sitting on heated shelves, or are quickly cooked at very high ...

Sound Station 21/10/2001

YOUR MONO, ONE-SPEAKER TV SOUNDS BETTER...

Sound Station A sound station for you PS2 could provide the user with an increase in sound quality, but is this the one? ***SPECIFICATION*** · 300 watts PMPO · 3 way sub-woofer speaker system · Variable volume control · Variable bass control · Acoustically engineered cabinet · Purple/Grey (iMac Blue also available) · Ideal for use with consoles. · Also accepts output form a Walkman, Discman, MiniDisc, MP3 etc ***PRICE*** The price of this speaker system is a quite reasonable £39.99, which if you compare it to other sound equipment on the market, this isn’t bad. But if you actually see past the spec and price you will find yourself very disappointed. The range of feature available is very poor eg. treble adjust, Bass adjust ( it has go this sort of, but there is hardly any bass anyway) ***ACTUAL QUALITY*** In my opinion the actual quality of the speaker system is a little on the poor side, it all seems a little flimsy. But I suppose this is what you get for your money. Speakers are small and light, all wires are very thin and there is no other inputs like auxilery input (Red and whiter, circular plugs) which would give you better sound. ***SIZE*** Size of this product is small but this is not to it’s credit. Speakers may as well be headphones and the subwoofer is useless when compare to many of the PC’s equivalents. ***AVALIABITLIY*** The sound system isn’t the most common available currently on the market, there are in many. ...

MTV 20/10/2001

Music Tele-Vision...........

MTV MTV has got to be one of the best channels available on any of the digital television services, mine being the SKY equivalent. MTV is the big daddy of all the music channels which are becoming more and more popular. This has been recently proven by the fact the BBC’s Top of the Tops has announced that it isn’t the ‘Number one anymore’ and that rateings are down. Yes, I can see why they are too, you can what all of the upcoming tunes 24 hours a day on MTV, and their isn’t that many people anymore that don’t have access to MTV. ***PICTURE*** The picture on the channel is brilliant, but to tell you the truth there aren’t many that are that bad on digital T.V. ***SOUND*** The sound, again is a very good aspect of the channel, but, yes it’s again what we would expect from a digital channel. Good sound is essential of a music channel as it’s predominantly what your doing, ‘Listening. ***PROGRAMS*** European Top 20 Hit list UK The lick chart And many more…. This is a very good point of MTV, they can cater for many different tastes. The channels available for these tastes are; MTV MTV 2 MTV DANCE MTV BASS ***WEBSITE*** The web site is a good part of the MTV service, and provide easy access to the latest charts, whether that be for Dance, Rap, Pop etc. it caters as MTV does for all types of tastes in music. ***SERVICE*** The MTV music channel is always on the air and is ...

Mobile Phones in Society/General 17/10/2001

HELLO...I'M IN THE CINEMA..........

Mobile Phones in Society/General Mobile phone in more recent years have taken off massively, the have become so massive that nearly every one in Britain has one, that includes kids. Yes, I said Kids. The reason being that until a few years mobile had been for business people they were a means of doing business on the move, as you were travelling to various meetings/to work, and more importantly to keep in touch with the wife. Now it’s completely different, mobile phones are more like a fashion accessory, but is the a good thing? The last few Christmases, mobile phone have been the most popular present, amongst every generation, and yes they are outselling Barbie. ***ACCESSORIES*** Accessories over the last few year for mobile phones has rocketed, down to the fact that companies will want to cash in on the market and make the most money s possible. The most notable feature of the mobile phone that has come into force over the last few years, is the ‘Removeable/Customiseable covers’. People can now totally customise there phones, again as you will see throughout this opinion, a feature of the Nokia series of phones. Others are though beginning to catch on. It’s a bit of a novelty factor/gimmick people and more especially the younger generating want to show off, they will also want to have a mobile a bit different, to reflect the users personality. For example you can get a new cover for the Nokia phone in the design of the Wales flag, or any other you wish. These ...

McDonald´s 16/10/2001

THE CHICKEN MUCK SANDWICH

McDonald´s We all now exactly what I mean when I say ‘Mc Donald’s’, this further implies the popularity of the restaurants and how they have, in a way TAKEN OVER THE WORLD. Basically, for those who have been hibernating for the last 20 years, Mc Donald’s is an American fast food chain that has established itself here in the United Kingdom as, well as many other countries of the world. ***SO WHY HAS THIS CHAIN BECOME SO POPULAR?*** Basically, you can walk into Mc Donald’s at any time of the day and get a meal made up in very little time indeed. Service in Mc Donald’s is very quick; most important in out very hectic lives. Each meal only costing between about £2.99 and £3.99 depending on which size you want (Regular, Large and Super Size). ***SO IS THE FOOD ANY GOOD?*** The food in Mc Donald’s in my opinion isn’t too bad. Basically the same rule applies ‘You get what you pay for”. A meal containing a large burger, chips and a soft drink isn’t bad for £2.99. Though there isn’t any guarantees of the quality of the meat, be that chicken or beef; and funny though it is, there’s now way of telling if they really have put ‘chicken muck’ in the Mc chicken sandwich. Something that I have always found when eating at Mc Donald’s, is that when I came out from having my meal I still feel hungry, chips are also heavily salted so that you get a larger drink and so pay more. ...

PS2 Vertical Stand 16/10/2001

I'VE GOT MINE STANDING VERTICAL...

PS2 Vertical Stand The Playstation 2 looks like a big black Japanese skyscraper, which in my opinion isn’t that appealing, and while looking a little different may not be the most colourful. The Playstation 2 has been designed so that it can be located in two different positions. It can be placed; 1. Horizontally (On top of a VCR or on top of a digi' box etc.) 2. Vertically (on a desk e.g.), like if you have a PC in a ‘Tower’ arrangement. The Playstation 2’s vertical stand allows the user to locate it in an upright position. This does make the console look more like a PC tower and in my opinion, it does look better in this position. This Playstation logo is also rotateable to accommodate for the differences in location, which isn’t that important, but is a nice touch. The Playstation 2 does have little rubber feet on both the horizontal base and the vertical base, but while placing the console on the horizontal base without a stand will do it no harm, placing it vertical may cause damage. It would be exceptionally easy to knock, kick or topple over the Playstation 2 if it wasn’t secured by the vertical stand. The PS2 would be very unstable and would be very likely to topple over, especially from an over excited pull of the joypad, if the moment of excitement came. The vertical stand does add a little style to the console, adding a purple triangular base to it, but is these little pieces of purple plastic worth ten pounds of your hard ...

Atari Jaguar 15/10/2001

THE ATARI JAGUAR IS BACK............

Atari Jaguar The Atari Jaguar was the world's first 64-bit home console video game system, which came onto the market nearer the end of 1993. It was a console released before the 32 bit Playstation, the 32 bit Saturn, and the 64bit Nintendo 64, was it’s head start an advantage?, certainly not…... In the past everyone involved in gaming knew that the more ‘bits’ a certain console had the better it was going to be, well I certainly did anyway. I suppose back in the early nineties games were more process orientated not graphically rendered, perhaps this is the way some of our modern mediocre games should have been. We has seen the 16 bit Nes and Master system, their next generation replacements, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) and the Mega Drive. We had seen that the next generation consoles were better because they has twice the ‘bit’ processing power, and it mattered. Until the late nineties there were parts of the gaming world seem to change, was it for the better? I am not sure, but it’s certainly changed, but sadly not for the advantage of ATARI. It was developed after three years of research, and offered high-speed action, CD-quality sound, and polygon graphics processing beyond most other machines available at the time, but at this time there were none of the big boys. It offered polygon processing, some of the best seen, until the Playstation and Saturn. Both were superior in the graphical department, and both had ...

FastTrack - Nullsoft WinAmp 14/10/2001

THE WINDOWS AMPLIFIER...

FastTrack - Nullsoft WinAmp Win Amp is *THE* best media player for the PC which is used widely for MP3’s, Wave files, playing CDs and every other media format. It’s a small download from the Winamp.com website, and is a small program, which has a small well-designed neat interface. ***THE PLAYER*** The Win Amp is small and very well designed, and is really nice to look at. At first the interface may be complicated, because it doesn't look like the usual Windows program, but give it time and you will figure it out. It has four base parts - the regular player, the equaliser, the play-list, and the Win Amp browser. You can close three of the windows down and keep the base player up, and all it takes is a click of the buttons for the list and equaliser to bring them back up. ***FEATURES*** When a song is playing, it gives you the song name, artist, length, even the names of the tracks on a CD if you internet connection is active. It gives you bit rate information, you can also choose between stereo and mono, but this is not really needed most would keep it on Stereo. There is also a button for both random play and play list loops. The interface is very intuitive when you get the hang of it. After setting it all up, you can save a list of your music so you don't have to assemble It again and again. You can always add music to it and save again. The Win Amp program also gives the option to display some fancy imagery. If chooses a windows in which you can choose the ...

Nintendo 64 12/10/2001

N64, THE NEXT GENERATION

Nintendo 64 Yes, the Playstation 2 has better graphics and the Playstation has 100x as many games, but N64 offers the only cartridge system out there, apart from the recently released Game Boy Advance. But how may people have I hear that get fed up of waiting for the CD based systems to load? ***LOADING TIMES*** However, when you put a cartridge in your system, all the information is immediately accessible, unlike CD ROMs that must spin and load the game information into the player’s memory every time a new game is played Yes, the CD-ROM drives and memory caching in the newer systems (Playstation 2, etc.) will drastically reduce waiting, but the N64 games have always provided quality over quantity. ***GRAPHICS*** The graphics that the Nintendo 64 is capable of is also far superior to the Playstation, with 64-bit processor architecture and 3D rendering to smooth out the pixels. ***SOUND*** The N64 boasts some of the best sound of then most recent gaming consoles, but it’s sadly not the market leader in this department. Is not a clear and sharp as the PS1’s sound, but can play more sounds simultaniously. ***QUALITY OF GAMES*** The quality of the games that have appeared on the N64 are far superior to any console there had ever been, including the PS1. Games like; Perfect Dark, Goldeneye Mario Tennis Both Zelda Games F-Zero X ISS Mario Kart Diddy Kong racing But to name a few… These are some of many more of top quality ...

messenger.msn.co.uk (Instant Messenger) 09/10/2001

MSN, THE INSTANT MESSENGER SERVICE...

messenger.msn.co.uk (Instant Messenger) ***MICROSOFT INSTANT MESSENGER*** Microsoft instant messenger is another one of those programs that does exactly what is says on the ‘Tin’, it’s an ‘instant’ message service provided by Microsoft. ***FEATURES*** This service allows users who are logged in to talk in ‘Real time’ to any of the people in their address book, who are also online at the same time. This offers a great twist on the already popular e-mail and text messenger services that we all know and love. But with instant messaging, it’s instant, you get an answer instantly. It’s almost like being on the telephone to your mates, for only the price of an internet call. But better still, there’s more; you can create a room with a few of you mates, and all join in, it’s brilliant. The messenger service offers feature like having warning messages of whose online, what e-mails you have in your hotmail account, setting your self away, busy etc. Microsoft instant messenger also offers the user not only to transfer text, but to transfer files too. Great for those who also wish to transfer pictures etc. it has all the feature you’ll ever need. ***SPEED*** Speed of the program is pretty impressive, especially as it stays on start-up when you switch on your computer. So when you decide to connect, it’s there waiting. It connects it’s self, so that your mates know that your online, so they can contact you if you ...

Sudden Strike (PC) 09/10/2001

AT WAR AGIANST AMERICA, IN A GAME

Sudden Strike (PC) Sudden Strike is one of those games, which can get you glued to your PC for hours and hours Sudden Strike is one of those games that makes you think, its all about strategy as the games is all about scenarios, e.g. get a certain hostage out of a certain building you have got to place all of you units accordingly, if you don’t then it’s game over… ***GRAPHICS*** The graphics are very good, and there are some excellent explosions effect put into the game which adds massively to the realism of the game. The whole game world is in a perceived 3d but in 2d. It has very little ‘rendered’ graphics (I think only explosions). But in my opinion this technique works very well, and makes the graphics very detailed indeed. ***MAIN OBJECTIVE*** The main theme of the game, though is war, and if that’s not you cup of tea then don’t buy this game. You are one country and generally the idea is to attack the other side, or to defend an attack from the opposition. Al large amount of the game is about strategy, where to place the troops with guns and where to place the larger tanks. The games about completing the many different scenarios available in the game. None of those are relatively easy, it will take a large amount of thinking strategy and hard work, if your are to succeed in the game. It will take a large amount of research in to what each of this units under you command can do, and if your short on knowledge, then you’ll ...
