The Frogs - Aristophanes 04/01/2007

Aristophanes and Euripides

The Frogs - Aristophanes Right I wasnt too sure where to put this, and im afraid that its not my best review but basically, here, I am looking at Frogs and poet and the women. Could you please let me know if i have put this in the wrong place thanks, enjoy... The two plays by Aristophanes; Frogs and The Poet and the Women were performed with a six year gap, The Poet and the women being the earlier of the two (411 BC) and Frogs the later play (405 BC) during this period of time democracy had been restored, the Battle of Notium between Sparta and Athens, then four years later the deaths of Euripides and Sophocles also in this year the Battle of Arginusae and then a year later Frogs were performed twice, once at the Lenaia and the City Dionysia. In Poet and the Women, in a short summary is basically a man Mensilochus who disguises himself as a women to get into the Thesmophoria to see what happens and gets caught and goes through a several series of parodies of Euripides plays to try to escape. When Frogs was wrote Euripides had just died, and Dionysus and his slave Xanthias (who appears in Wasps) go down to Hades also known as Pluto's Palace to try and bring Euripides back as there is no good poets left now he is gone. Dionysus disguises himself as Heracles because he is the only person who has gone to Hades and has returned alive. When they get down there Euripides and Aeschylus have a debate and Euripides talks first so we know that he will loose and in the end Dionysus brings back Aeschylus ...

The Wasps - Aristophanes 02/01/2007

The Wasps- ARISTOPHANES

The Wasps - Aristophanes Wasps was performed in 422 BC at the Lenaia and won second prize. Wasps are basically about Cleon's control over the Athenian jury system. In the play Wasps the two main characters are Procleon and Anticleon, father and son. Procleon has an obsession with sitting on juries and Anticleon his son, wants to cure his addiction and tries locking im his house, but Procleon tries to escape many times, one of which he pretends he is going to sell his donkey at the market but hides underneath the donkey, like Odysseus under the Cyclops's ram, we would expect Anticleon to recognise this straight away, but the joke is delayed to fit in the joke about Odysseus this is an example of incongruity. The father and son have a debate (the agon) and Anticleon decides to set up a court in their house and have a trial about a dog who has stolen Sicilian cheese. The chorus is made up of old jury men, who often talk about the Persian wars. Whereas the first half is mainly about the jury and the second half seems to drift way which includes Anticleon and Procleon attending a dinner party in which Procleon steals a flute girl and gets very drunk. I have chosen this question, to write about on Wasps because I think that having a detailed knowledge does depend on the way in which one would react to the play as a whole, or at least the first half of the play, as in the second half it drifts away from the Athenian legal system and juries. At the time Wasps was written, the Athenian legal system ...

10 Things You Couldn't Live Without Here are 10 things I wouldn't be able to live without: 1. Of Mice and Men - John Steinbeck 25/06/2006

"We could live offa the fatta the lan' "

Of Mice and Men - John Steinbeck Right, here we go another book review, hopefully this time, it will be better than the other ones and I won't give away too much information! *THE AUTHOR* Right very brief view of John Steinbeck, he was born in 1902 at Salinas, California. His books aren't books that you want to read when you are feeling a bit depressed because you may just want to hang yourself after reading them, however if you are someone that likes to get even more upset than what you are then John Steinbeck's books are definitely for you. However his work is so well put together it is unbelievable and I love his work. *SOME OF HIS BOOKS* 1. (The one I am going to write about) Of Mice and Men 2. Grapes of Wrath 3. The Moon is down 4. Sweet Thursday 5. To a God Unknown He has many more, too many to keep going on *smiles* *OF MICE AND MEN-THE CHARACTERS* Some of the characters in the book are: Lennie- Now, I would consider Lennie to be the main character in this novel, Lennie's appearance is large, like a bear, in two ways, one he is dangerous and two a bear, more like a cuddly bear. He has major mental problems; he has an extremely bad memory and doesn't take in information as well as others do. He takes a huge likening to soft things; he likes to pet and stroke mice, but often kills them as he doesn't know his own strength. He also dreams of looking after his own rabbits. George- Again, George is one of the main characters. George is an absolute opposite to Lennie, he is ...

Written from the Heart 25/06/2006

I love you

Written from the Heart I wrote this when I was about 12 and recently, around Christmas time last year I changed some of the lyrics/words to it and someone I know wrote music to it and I got singing lessons and I thought I was going to get really far with until I fell out with the person and my singing teacher told me it wouldn't get far, but I just want to share it with everyone! So here it is, my song: *CHORUS* Many times you broke my heart Many times we've been apart Guess I never know... Thinking of you Everything I do Tell me please (Is it true) I love you *VERSE1* I'm not the first girl you made cry I can only wipe my eyes But I can't hide the pain inside *BRIDGE* Remembering times you said I love you Reminiscing things we used to do I love you *REPEAT CHORUS* *VERSE 2* My feelings they are so strong Even if it's been this long Dreaming.... (Of holding you till the end of time) Well, until you say your mine *REPEAT BRIDGE AND CHORUS* *VERSE 3* The way that I have been treated I feel as though I've been cheated But... I still, come back to you With "Is our love still true?" *REPEAT BRIDGE AND CHORUS (X3)* If you can think of ANYTHING that I can do to improve this I was HUGELY appreciate it thanks xxxx ...

Romeo and Juliet

Essays I hope this essay is going in the right place on ciao, if its not could you please let me know? Well here's my essay hope you like it! Romeo and Juliet Romeo and Juliet is a play that tells the love story of "Two star crossed lovers" who unfortunately were not meant to be together, Romeo being a Montague and Juliet being a Capulet, are both from different families, sworn to be enemies. Shakespeare's play has remained so popular due to the juxtaposition of the romance and tragedy. The play's popularity can be seen in its many performances in theatres and the numerous versions of the film. In this essay I am going to analyze the way that the story changes from romance to tragedy, because of the way the characters act and how this impacts and leads to the tragic ending with two young lovers dying. In Act 3 scene 1, Tybalt, who earlier in the play wanted to start a fight with Romeo when he saw him at the Capulet ball, challenges Romeo to a duel, Romeo refuses saying: "…The reason that I have to love thee doth much excuse the appertaining rage…therefore farewell" Romeo's attitude has changed because he is now married to Juliet and therefore he is related to Tybalt. Mercutio is outraged and to defend Romeo's honour, he draws his sword. He and Tybalt fight whilst Romeo attempts to break them apart, but fails and Mercutio is wounded badly, but even as he is at the point of death he is witty and sarcastic: "…Ask for me tomorrow and you shall find me a grave ...

Autobiography - Ashlee Simpson 24/06/2006

If you want her auto, want her autobiography...

Autobiography - Ashlee Simpson *ASHLEE SIMPSON* I have been a fan of Ashlee Simpson since she started her show on MTV "The Ashlee Simpson Show" where she started producing her first album "Autobiography" Whilst she continues with her TV programme, we get to know her well, and she turns out to be a very bubbly type of person. *THE ALBUM* The UK special edition album "Autobiography" consists of 14 songs 1. Autobiography 2. Pieces of me 3. Shadow 4. Lala 5. Love makes the world go round 6. Better off 7. Love me for me 8. Surrender 9. Unreachable 10 Nothing new 11. Giving it all away 12. Undiscovered 13. Harder Everyday* 14. Sorry* *These two are bonus tracks included in the UK edition (may not be on other copies of "Autobiography" by Ashlee Simpson. The first song "Autobiography" is actually the soundtrack to her TV programme "The Ashlee Simpson Show" It is very catchy, just like most of her songs on this album. Basically she is saying if you want to know me, ask me. The second song on her album "pieces of me" came out as her first single, its about falling for someone how it feels great and how he knows all about her "All the pieces of me". The third song "Shadow" is different from the first two songs because it is a lot slower and a lot more emotional, it tells about her being little and her sister getting all the attention as she was growing up into stardom and how she was beautiful and had everything and that she (Ashlee) was left in the cold. As it comes towards the end ...

Short Stories 18/06/2006

Trapped

Short Stories Here's a story I wrote a while back now, It's one that I'm quite proud of, I hope you like. Trapped Chapter 1 "It Was…Me!" Summer 1959- I stopped dead; taking my focus off everything around me, eyes fixed upon a terror that was only to be imagined in ones worse nightmares. I hit the floor. For a while I stared up at the ceiling, breathing fast and out of control…then all that I could see was black, dull, darkness, it was as though I were blind, then I saw a light, I tried to move my head, but the pain was too much for me to handle. I closed my eyes for what seemed like an eternity. *** I slowly got up off the ground and looked up; for a moment I had no clue where I was, but then my attention caught the headstones, and I knew I was in a cemetery. I glanced all around me; I was alone. I gradually staggered past the grave sites and started to surf through their deadly, engraved names, not thinking much of it. Without warning I caught site of a tombstone with a familiar name, I knew that name, that person…it was…it was…me! Staring down at the ground, thinking about what I had just seen, I rapidly lifted my head up, to find I was in a new place; I looked around, trying to see through the misty darkness. What I couldn't understand was where I was and why I was here…I looked around and I came across what looked like a door handle, so I pulled on it and it swung open, I walked through the doorway, and came to a recognizable place; it was much lighter now, so ...

Poetry Analysis 15/06/2006

To compare to war poems...

Poetry Analysis To compare the way in which two poets, writing at different times, how they have expressed their views about war and to show how these views reflect the period in which they were written. Different generations are inspired by the experience of war because of the heroics, bravery and waste of life. In this essay I will compare two poems "Charge of the Light Brigade" by Alfred Lord Tennyson and "Dulce et Decorum Est" by Wilfred Owen. "Charge of the Light Brigade" being written during the Crimean war and "Dulce et decorum est" being written the World War one. "The Charge of the Light Brigade" was a poem written by a man who was poet Laureate for the Queen; his job was to write poems about famous events. The poem is in six verses, each verse tells a different stage in the poem, the first verse begins with the British troops charging into the "valley of death." An order is made to the light brigade: "Forward the light brigade! Charge for the guns" The soldiers had to go forward to the battle field and charge the enemy with guns; this is also an example of direct speech which is used to show the reader that it is being told by someone else other than the poet. Tennyson uses repetition throughout the poem, in verse 1 there are several examples: "Half a league" "Into the valley of death" "Rode the six hundred" Tennyson uses repetition to emphasize certain phrases in the poem and to make the reader remember particular parts. "Half a league" is showing how long ...

Callanetics

Callanetics *Getting healthy* A few months ago I decided i wanted to get toned up and do more exercise to boost up my health, so i tried Jade Goodman's dance video (didn't stick to it) I found it really boring and annoying. I then tried reducing the amount of junk food I was eating, but com'on who can keep to things like that especially when you go shopping and you see all those nice chocolate cakes and sweets.... *Callanetics* Some time later I was having a chat about it all with my friend Leah and she told me about this exercise "Callanetics" at first i thought "Callanetics, what the hell is that" and she was telling me how quickly it worked, she made it sound amazing, so i got a copy of it, the copy is years old, older than me! *The history* 1986 it came out and it was a big hit at the time, but unfortunately it died out. Callanetics first started by Callan Pinckney, who produced a variety of callenetic videos: Callanetics [1986] Callanetics - Super Callanetics [1988] Callanetics - Beginning Callanetics [1989] Callanetics - Quick Callanetics - Stomach [1991] Callanetics - AM/PM [1992] *The video* The video is set out to do 6 main things: It starts off with the warm up: that works most of your body, (by the first time of doing callanetics this is where i almost gave up because it tired me so much, by the second and third time it was a piece of cake!) Then it works with arm muscles, working in slow 1 inch movements (it rags at first but again ...

Escaped from Foxworth Hall

Petals on the Wind - Virginia Andrews *THE BOOK* The second book "Petals on the Wind" following the first book "Flowers in the Attic" The 3 siblings, Chris, Cathy and Carrie have escaped the evilness of their mother and grandmother at Foxworth Hall, without their brother Cory, who was killed in the previous book. Leaving behind their memories of the attic and their brother they make their way by moving in with a man who Cathy forbidenly falls in love with. Cathy the narrator again in this book, studies the beautiful arts of ballet, in ballet school, Chris goes to study at college to become a doctor and Carrie goes off to a private school where she cannot grow becasue of her time in the attic. Whilst Cathy is training at ballet school she falls in love with Julian! Still hating her mother and grandmother she seeks out her revenge she cant determine whether she is more angry at her grandmother for torturing them or her mother who tried to kill them all. Cathy taking so much saddness in her life loses 2 of the closest people in her life, but carries on planning her revenge to go back to foxwall hall........ *MY OPINION* My personal opinion to this book is that it is just as good as the first one, i read this book in 2 days i just couldnt put it down. Flowers in the attic- Virginia Andrews

Flowers in the Attic - Virginia Andrews My mother reccomended me to this book, as did hers the first time i read Flowers in the Attic by Virginia Andrews, i was touched deaply, how a mothers love so deap can be turned so quickly over the luxury of having money. The mother of Christoper, Cathy, Cory and Carrie loved her children and her husband, when her husband died, she sought out to win her "daddy's" love again so that her name would go back into his will, so she moved her and the children to Foxworth Hall where her mother and father lived, she hid the children away (in a room, where they could go into the attic to play) from her father as he dispised them because their father was there mothers very own uncle! soon she forgot about her children and the evil grandmother poisoned them and only 3 of them survived, i wont tell you too much i might give it away! (unless you have already read it!) Christoper and Cathy (going through there teenage years) was longing for love and to experience new things but after years and years of being locked up they soon fell in love with each other... hating there mother now, Christopher studies the books in the attic about diseases and medicine wanting to become a doctor and Cathy teaches herself ballet, until the final straw comes and they cant take no longer and come up with a plan to leave Foxwall Hall forever!!!!!!!!!!! warning though if you are majorly touched by sad things, beware this is very very very touching and tearjerking. The following series (in order) ...

this album

Just Like Everybody - 23 Skidoo This album was fantastic, i got it in about 1996, i listened to it over and over again, my favourite was baby spice!!!! alot of people say that the spice girls were stupid, looking back maybe they were a bit childish, but i was only young about 6-9 when they were in hitting the charts and i loved them....
