Everything that starts with D ... 01/08/2011

Days I'll remember all my life.......

Everything that starts with D ... Those Days... Six long Years ago now ( 2005 ) on the 4th, 5th and 6th of April, I was frantically chasing around trying to get a pair of tickets, which seemed so very, very important to me at the time, to see the Manic Street Preachers in Concert, who were playing at the Brangwyn Hall in Swansea, on Thursday the 7th of April, their only Welsh date on this Tour, all to no avail......eventually I gave up. Unknown to me, at the time, this was going to be a date that changed my life forever, and still haunts me to this very Day..... I drove past the venue, at about 9:30 am in the morning, and saw a small orderly queue forming outside, waiting for returned Tickets, I sighed, and carried on up to my Mothers house, to take her shopping, and collect her pension, as I had done so for quite a while now, every Thursday morning, nothing unusual there at all..... However, when I get to my Mothers house, it was a little strange, the TV was blasting, the interior doors were wide open, the living room looked as if it had been left from the night before, and there was no sign of my Mother either, this is not normal at all, she is usually pottering about downstairs in her own way, getting ready to go out with me.... I don't like this one bit, and I have a strange uneasy feeling I know what is going to happen here, I turn the TV off, and start to look around the House downstairs, search complete, no sign or sound of her at all ........ Total Silence.... and a sense of fear too..... As I ...

Rockferry - Duffy 10/12/2008

Duffy the Emotional Slayer....

Rockferry - Duffy Sometime last Year, I remember reading that the new " singing sensation " from Wales was going to be on the Jools Holland Later show, her name was Duffy, and was someone I had never heard of before at the time, so I duly taped the show and was quite impressed by what I saw and heard, and being Welsh myself, I like to keep in touch with the local music scene. Fast forward a couple of months, and Duffy was once again on the Jools Holland Later show, as a replacement for Alicia Keys, and this time she was absolutely brilliant, with 3 haunting songs played live, those being, Mercy, Rockferry and Stepping Stone, and in between these shows I was very fortunate to have seen her live in Concert, and she was brilliant there too. Then all of a sudden " Mercy " was at number one in the Charts, and everyone wanted to know about Duffy, what a turn around for this Lady, she is only 23 Years old, and this is the start of a whirlwind time for her now I'm sure of that, and well deserved in my opinion. So, with the release of this debut album this week, was I going to be disappointed. What becomes of the Broken Hearted... They Buy This CD... "A bag of songs and a Heavy Heart " The moment the opening piano chords of the first track, Rockferry start to weave its magic, you know you are in for a treat with this CD, the haunting vocals of Duffy then start to sneak into the song, and slowly take over the track, its a stunning opening track, and sets the mood for what is to come, ...

Everything that starts with A ... 03/01/2008

Alfaholics Anonymous....

Everything that starts with A ... Hello....My name is Mr Roy ( stands up, head bowed ) and I'm an Alfaholic ( round of applause from others in room )....Thank You all for listening to my sad story...... It all started when I was young lad and my Uncle first took me for a drive in his Alfa Romeo, I knew then that I was going to have a problem, the smell of the leather seats, the wooden steering wheel, the dashboard, the style of the Italian marque, the shape of the bodywork, the glistening red colour, and THAT badge Oh, I was seriously addicted, but did not know it yet...... So, the first time ever I had a drive of an Alfa Romeo, I was only 18 Years old with hormones all over the place, and I think it went straight to my head ( maybe somewhere else too ).......I clearly remember her name was Alfasud, and she was totally stunning, she had everything I ever wanted in a car, she was a real little goer too, I can tell you, I don't think I had known anything like her before, she was so quick to respond to me......Shame she came apart at the seams ...I should never have nicknamed her Rusty.... Guilletta was my next love... Another Hot Blooded Italian with a wonderful style, flair and grace, who could resist her, just one look and knew you would have to fill her up with petrol, oil, or water......but did like to have a good servicing often, Oh, how I loved putting my Dipstick in and out of that beautiful throbbing *****.... no wonder I blew a Gasket or two....But, she was very greedy indeed and did not ...

Sarah McLachlan - Afterglow Live (DVD) 21/08/2007

Canadian Delight....

Sarah McLachlan - Afterglow Live (DVD) Having recently been reading a lot of reviews about female vocalists, I have noticed that one name never, ever, seems to turn up is that of Sarah Mclachan, who must be one of Canada's best kept secrets.... Why, I do not know, as this Lady has probably got one of the most powerful and emotional voices I have ever heard in my life, and some of you may have already heard it, and not known, as she is featured on the soundtrack of Toy Story 2, singing the lovely " When Somebody Loved Me".... So, lets try and put the record straight on that one by reviewing this wonderful live DVD of Sarah in Concert..... Almost immediately from the moment you put this disc into your player, and start the Concert, you know that from the opening chords and vocal from the beautiful track " Fallen " that this is going to be a special event, which has been captured here on DVD for us all to enjoy, time and time again.... The Concert then goes on to show Sarah and her stunning Band play just about everything you could possibly expect from her repertoire of songs over the Years, which once again, seem to have been cruelly overlooked by the majority of people... World on Fire, is the next song to be played on this DVD, and follows on from the opening track, in its harrowing use of Sarah's voice, with stunning effect...........and here we have the format for this brilliant Concert, the voice is totally captivating and so very emotional indeed, that I defy anyone to watch this and not be ...

Short Stories 26/07/2007

Empty Rooms......Empty Heart.....

Short Stories Here I stand.. Key in hand.... Turn my face to the Wall.. Now Mum's gone this can't go on.. Feeling two feet tall... Hey, you've got to sell your House today....... MONDAY 17 October 2005..... I slowly walk up the front steps to enter the House for the final time, I get to the front door, the key is inserted into the lock, I've done this a thousand times before, but this will be the last time ever. The door opens as normal, I take two paces inside the House, I'm in the Hallway, I recognise that smell instantly, my Mother's presence is still here, I can feel it, there is a door to my left I open it..... EMPTY ROOM.... This is the front Lounge, its totally bare, apart from the red floral patterned carpet on the floor, the marble fireplace is barren, no pictures on the wall at all now, just white marks where they used to be, its a very large cold room today, no sign of all the happy days that took place in here, it's actually hard to believe I was actually born in this room.... I walk along the narrow Hallway again, another couple of small paces, I come across another door, again to my left, once again I open it.... EMPTY ROOM.... This is the main Living Room, its quite dark, its quite damp, its quite cold, Its not lived in any more, it hasn't been now for well over six months, there is a Gas Fire on the wall, I can remember the click it used to make when it was turned on and off many times. Never going to hear that sound again, or to have a ...

The Beatles Anthology (5 Disc Box Set) 18/05/2007

Nostalgia...Not what it used to be......

The Beatles Anthology (5 Disc Box Set) A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away..... Remember how those words were scrolling across the screen when you first saw the Star Wars film and you just knew films were never going to be the same again.... Well if you are in the same age group as me ( Stop laughing at the back ) the same thing applied when you first heard the unusual sound of " The Beatles " spitting out their first bits of raw music. In about 1962 I was given for Xmas a Red Dansette Record Player....( Ask your Mum / Dad or Grandparents even ) and with it a couple of black plastic things called singles... ( Ask Mum / Dad again etc ) to try this thing out. Wow, it plays music just by putting a piece of black plastic with a hole in the middle of it ,on a turn table, and boy does it sound good, for the first time ever, I can play what I want, at what volume I want and when... Life for me was never going to be the same again.. So Thats The Support Band Out Of The Way.. Yes... Thats Me...I'm finished...Thank You..Hope you liked my latest review ? On to the Main Event.... Ladies and Gentlemen please welcome..... THE BEATLES..... There are many reviews on this site which are absolutely brilliant and if you want a full review of this band you are better advised to look elsewhere... Anthology is The Beatles History in a 5 Disc Box Set available at all DVD retailers and costs around £40 to £49:00, cheaper on the net if you look around. Next up is the complete Anthology ...

Sheryl Crow - Rockin' The Globe - Live (DVD) 04/01/2007

Nothing to Crow about !!!!....

Sheryl Crow - Rockin' The Globe - Live (DVD) Having been fortunate enough to see Sheryl Crow live in Concert on a couple of ocassions, I know how good a show she is capable of putting on, so having seen this DVD on offer in the HMV online sale for £4:99, I just had to buy it. Maybe to relive those excellent memories, who knows..... So, having put this disc in the player, and brought up the simple on screen Menu, I eagerly awaited the start of this Concert, expecting it to be something special, as her stage show normally is. However, the first thing that actually catches my attention, is how very, very thin Sheryl Crow looks here, I know that is an odd thing to write on a Concert review, but it is a sad fact, I should be listening to the first song, not passing comment on her physique. The song is imaginately called " Opening " and one I do not recognise, Yet....and then it then blends nicely into " Maybe That's Something " an old favourite of mine, and one that should sound good. But, wait a minute, there is something not right here, this Band and Sheryl Crow do not sound very enthusiastic at all, its a very lack lustre start in fact, and not one I was expecting. Hopefully, the next track " A Change will do you Good " will be better, as this is one of Sheryl Crow's classic songs, and usually comes alive in Concert.......... Nope....flat as a Pancake again, and very rushed in fact..... It really looks as if Sheryl Crow and this Band, do not really want to be here tonight, she is smiling away whilst ...

Is There Anybody Out There? The Wall (Live 1980-1981/Live Recording) - Pink Floyd 18/07/2006

Troubled Waters.........

Is There Anybody Out There? The Wall (Live 1980-1981/Live Recording) - Pink Floyd Way back in 1977, Roger Waters was so incensed with a fans behaviour at the Pink Floyd's " Animals " gig in Montreal, that he actually spat at the poor guy, who dared to enjoy himself at the Concert, thus starting the whole " Wall " concept.... Unless you have been living on another Planet for the last 27 years, or watching too much Big Brother, then I'm pretty certain you will have heard of " The Wall " by Pink Floyd.... The original double Album was released on Vinyl way back in 1979, and went on to be a multi million seller for the Band, this was followed by a " World Tour " which saw the "The Wall " performed live in only 3 venues, New York, London and Germany, tickets for the gigs sold out almost immediatly, and the live shows were totally stunning affairs indeed, I was lucky enough to see a couple of them at Earls Court in 1980 and 1981, and this double CD is indeed a full concert performance of those shows..... So what exactly do you get here...... Well the cover of the CD itself is nothing special to look at really, its just four life masks of the individual members of the Band, printed on a black background, same on both sides. Open up the case, and inside we have 2 different patterned coloured discs, and 2 very informative booklets to accompany them, which are designed to be read whilst each CD is being played, as they show pictures of the Concert delevoping, brick by brick if you like.... CD One.... After a slow and deliberate introduction by ...

Pink Floyd - Pulse (Two Discs) (DVD) (RESCHEDULED) (DVD) 14/07/2006

The Great Gig in the Sky....now on DVD...

Pink Floyd - Pulse (Two Discs) (DVD) (RESCHEDULED) (DVD) It seems very ironic indeed, that the Day this newly released DVD package dropped through my letter box, that Sky News were releasing details of the rather sad news that Roger " Syd" Barrett had passed away..... For those of you that don't recognise the name Syd Barrett, and there will be quite a lot of people that don't, Mr Barrett was one of the founder members of Pink Floyd, and the inspiration that put the Band on the map in the first place, all those Years ago,and possibly without his influence, The Pink Floyd and this DVD would never have seen the light of Day, neither would the rest of the repertoire of Pink Floyd either.... Anyway....on to this " Special Edition " 2 Disc version of Pulse.. This is no newcomer to the music scene at all, as it was originally released way back in the mid 90s, as a one Disc / Video and has been released on CD too.. So what do you get now in 2006..... Well its a nice little hard back Book set up, with the 2 Discs inside, and looking very pretty too, on top of each other, both with the same " Pulse " logo, telling you which is Disc 1 and Disc 2, quite simple really... Disc One... As soon as you put the Discs in your player, the menu gives you the option of choosing your optimum sound which are... Dolby Digital 5.1/ 448 kbps Dolby Digital 5.1/ 640 kbps Stereo The small booklet supplied tells you, that those of us interested in a better Audio quality should use the 640 kbps option, and I agree with that one ...

David Gilmour - In Concert (DVD) 21/10/2005

Wish I Was There......

David Gilmour - In Concert (DVD) Does David Gilmour need any introduction at all ???........ Well, Yes Actually, because as a musician, he has been around a very long time, and is probably now, the most famous member of Pink Floyd....but a lot of people still say who ?.. Which one's Pink ?..... Having said that, there are many, many people who had still never heard of him, but a lot of that changed when the re-united Pink Floyd topped the Bill at Live 8 this Summer, all of a sudden people wanted to know who was that guy that sang / played the classic " Comfortably Numb " song so brilliantly, that closed the London show..... This Concert was recorded at the Royal Festival Hall in London in 2002, and was billed as " Robert Wyatts Meltdown Concert ", it was a pretty low key event if I remember correctly, but still a total sell out as you would expect. The Concert Itself..... So, we see David Gilmour strumming a few practice chords, and then playing the unmistakeable introduction to Shine on you Crazy Diamond, a tune just about all Pink Floyd fans will know well, and have in their collection, its also a very moody piece of music too, played like this, it also shows how versatile Gilmour is as a musician as he skillfully moves from one chord sequence to another with ease, when the vocals do come in we are in full flow of the song and its so refreshing to hear it played like this, and it sets the mood for the whole DVD really, all very laid back, atmospheric and beautifully played...No special ...

Everything that starts with K ... 17/10/2005

Kinky ???......Oh Yes, very much so....

Everything that starts with K ... Mention the name Ray Davies to any musical pundit, and you will often get the response......of The Kinks. Yes that is the Ray Davies I am writing this review about, In Concert in fact.... On Saturday 15 October, my wife and I went to St Davids Hall, Cardiff, to see a man, who many people believe to be the best wordsmith / songwriter that British music has ever produced, I certainly do. St. Davids Hall, is a purpose built multi functioning facility, and I have been here many times before, and you can almost guarantee a good seat and a good sound, so we took our seats and waited for the Concert to begin. At approx 8:30pm, the house lights dimmed, and a solo spotlight shone on the centre of the stage, a slighty nervous Ray Davies then strolled into the spotlight, and casually said " Hello ".......the crowd then responded with a massive cheer and very loud clapping to show their appreciation of the man. Picking up the blue Strat guitar that was lying against side of the the stage, he casually started to strum the opening chords of " I'm not like Everbody else " not one of The Kinks better known songs, but it sounded raw, harsh, emotional and brilliantlly played, and after the opening verses sung solo, the band came crashing in to play the chorus and it was a wonderful opening to the Concert..... The next 2 hours plus, literally just flew past, song after song came flying off the stage, and a lot of them were very short, so I shall now just review the ones I can ...

Roger Waters - The Wall - Live In Berlin (DVD) 23/09/2005

Still Waters , Run Cheap......except on DVD

Roger Waters - The Wall - Live In Berlin (DVD) So ya, Thought ya, Might like to go to the show.... Well I did. Billed as.. The Memorial Fund For Disaster Relief.... I was one of those poor souls there on this performance of " The Wall " in Berlin at Potsdamer Platz on the evening of Saturday 21 July 1990 .....by Roger Waters....and Special Guests... This show had never been performed live since Pink Floyd played it for the last time at Earls Court in June 1981, soon after this a massive legal wrangle started to emerge between David Gilmour and Roger Waters, which would leave the band in turmoil for many years to come...... In all fairness, it was a very brave move by Roger Waters to even try and stage this show, as the logistics would be a nightmare, especially in an outdoor venue like this, after all at the time it was best known for being the place where Hitler's Bunker was found.... To see the real scale of the Concert stage, please have a look at the pictures we took, which are printed below... Anyway on to the perfomance of the DVD... Well, anyone that knows the story of " The Wall " concept album will find no surprises here, it goes through the album from start to finish in the usual order and offers no real changes in the way it was presented at all, all the tracks are played out with minimal effort and really quite clinical at times......Snowy White trying to replace David Gilmour just does not work, and some of the solos he plays here are really pretty weak indeed...........so are some ...

Hoover HSW150 23/09/2005

Washer Dryer Blues ??

Hoover HSW150 We have had this machine for almost 2 years now and it is still under manufacturers guarantee, not that that makes any difference at all. In that time we have had 20 seperate call outs for the Tumble Dryer, mostly for faulty motor problems (eventually the motor was replaced) and unclogging of the vent pipe. Which does seems to be a common fault amongst other Hoover Washer/Dryers. Plus another 10 call outs for the Washing Machine itself ( new water pump and a stretched fan belt, plus many other repairs ). I would certainly advise you to avoid this Hoover machine at all costs. We certainly wish we had bought a different make or model. There is however a bright side......Honestly ??? When this machine does work properly it really is an excellent product. The 1500 speed gives you an excellent wash ( rated A ) and really is very quiet overall, the controls on the front are easy to use and simple to understand. The max load to wash is 5kg but the drum does seem to be a lot smaller than that and the machine itself is nice to look at with a pleasant curved front top and nice clear instruction control switches. The programmes are quiet varied and you should be able to find a suitable one for all types of conditions, its also very easy to clean and maintain. But I still feel it represents only a one star rating simply because it has been so unreliable and does not instill confidence. My advice to anyone thinking of buying a Hoover,is to certainly take out an ...

Inside Pink Floyd 1967 - 1996: The Definitive Critical Review (2 Discs And Book) 18/03/2005

Comfortably Dumb (Enough to buy this) !!!

Inside Pink Floyd 1967 - 1996: The Definitive Critical Review (2 Discs And Book) Well first of all, this is not a completely new product,in as much as both these DVDs have been around for some time now. They were previously sold seperately under the titles: Pink Floyd A Critical Review 1967-1974 Pink Floyd A Critical Review 1975-1996 However, they now have been repackaged and remarketed under this new title: Inside Pink Floyd A Critical Review 1967-1996 Which includes the 2 DVDs and a 50 page booklet. So what's it like ??? Well it says on the front cover: The Independent Critical Guide. Includes Previously Unavailable Material. I don't know about the first line there, but I do know about the second line, and I can assure you there is nothing on this set that I have not seen before. Therefore,it also says on the back cover. Editorial Control. This project requires total independent editorial control. The film is unauthorised and is definetely not associated or approved in any way with EMI. It has not been authorised or approved by Pink Floyd or their management. It has not been approved by past members or their management. Read into that that what you will ??? Anyway on to the 2 discs. The 2 discs themselves are quite attractive. Disc One has a nice colour picture of Pink Floyd from around about 1971 on it, and it sits very nicely into the inside cover of the hard back book which blends into the picture quite easily. Disc Two also has a great colour picture of the Pink Floyd in full concert mode from ...

JVC KDSH77 15/01/2005

The Sound of Silence......JVC Style.........

JVC KDSH77 We had this JVC KDSH 77 player installed in our car ( ALFA Romeo147) by Halfords about 18 mths ago. I must say the sound was absolutely brilliant through the cars own fitted speakers ( Sony x 8 ) and for a while we were extremely happy with all the features on this machine. It played all our CD/Rws, had a very simple to use tuner, with plenty of power, looked great, was user friendly and fitted in the dashboard perfectly. No problem there I hear you say . However....Unfortunately. True to form as has been proved with many JVC car audio / music systems before. The 12 month guarantee was up and within a couple of weeks almost to the day. Guess what ?? It packed in. ( Error Message on Screen ) Went back to Halfords...Not our problem, Sir... Our 12 month warranty is just up, any problems in the last twelve months, ..Sir ??.... Sorry ( With Big Grin ) to hear that, Sir.... Therefore it had to go back to the manufacturers for repair, who after a couple of days of calling managed to answer their ( 1 ) phone, said they would be in touch. They then sent us a large bag to put the unit in and off it went to the JVC service centre. We got it back about 6 weeks later, at a cost of £65:00. It has never been the same since with numerous "error messages" appearing on the screen all the time. After about two months, It then packed in again completely. We sent it back to JVC once again and got it back after about 6 weeks , and another bill for £65:00. ...
