1989 - Taylor Swift 23/11/2014

And she's done it again!

1989 - Taylor Swift I'm sure everyone knows about Taylor Swift. Her songs are the ones that I never get tired of listening to, no matter how many times. Her roots have slowly turned from country to pop. I respect the fact that, as a songwriter, her songs are about her personal relationships and experiences. I think she is by far one of the best singer-songwriters we have right now. Before fame: Taylor started to show interest in musical theater at the age of nine years old and started performing in various productions and took vocal and acting classes. Then she turned to country music, therefore performing in places such as festivals, fairs and entering contests. At the age of eleven, she and her mother began making frequent trips to Nashville to leave demos for music labels. Then, at fourteen, she persuaded her parents for them to move to Nashville permanently to pursue a musical career. In 2005, when she caught the attention of Scott Borchetta, a DreamWorks Records executive who was planning on forming his own record label, Big Machine Records. Taylor Swift was one of the labels first signings. And since then, she has released five hit albums - Taylor Swift, Fearless, Speak Now, Red, and her latest album, 1989. 1989 Track listing: (Standard version) This album is less country and far more pop-focused. Taylor Swift described it as her 'first documented official pop album' and it is really quite different from her other releases. She has written all the songs in this album based on ...

Maleficent (DVD) 20/11/2014

Nice twist to Sleeping Beauty...

Maleficent (DVD) This is a really nice adaption of the Disney's 1959 animated movie Sleeping Beauty. The story is told from the perspective of the antagonist, the misunderstood villain Maleficent. It stars Angelina Jolie as Maleficent, Elle Fanning as Princess Aurora, Brenton Thwaites as Prince Phillip and Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple and Lesley Manville as the three pixies in charge with raising Aurora secretly until she turns 16. Plot: We first meet Maleficent as a powerful but sweet young faerie that protects the Moors, a realm of supernatural beings, from a neighboring human kingdom. She meets Stefan, a human peasant boy and slowly 'fall in love' with each other. When they grow older, Stefan, blinded by power and greed, betrays her and cuts off Maleficent's wings in order to be named the king's successor. Maleficent starts planning revenge, and crashes the christening of Stefan's new-born daughter to place a curse on her - that she would prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel on her 16th birthday, which would then cause her to fall into a death-like slumber, which could only be broken by true love's kiss. I don't want to reveal too much, but this film has that typical Disney structure - all's well at the end! My Opinion: One of the reasons I loved this movie what because Angelina Jolie was stunning. She gave an amazing performance portraying Maleficent. To be honest I don't think it would've worked as well as it has without Angelina Jolie starring. The film's visual ...

The Parent Trap (DVD) 20/11/2014

When Lindsey Lohan was cute!

The Parent Trap (DVD) I have watched this film countless times and I just LOVE it! Lindsey Lohan gave such a good performance as the twins, Hallie and Annie. For anyone who doesn't know this (and I doubt it), The Parent Trap is a 1998 romantic comedy and is the second adaptation of Erich Kästner's German novel 'Lottie and Lisa'. Plot: Hallie Parker from Napa Valley and Annie James from London are two girls from completely different backgrounds who go to the same summer camp in Maine. The girls first see each other at the end of a fencing match, when they their masks and realize they look exactly alike. This leads to a prank war, which then leads to both of them being sent to the isolation cabin with only the other for company. As they open up to each other more, they see that they each have half a torn photograph of the other parent. After realizing they're twins, they hatch a plan to meet the other parent, with intentions of switching places at the end of summer camp. They want to get both parents back together, but there's a twist when Annie goes to Napa Valley as Hallie and finds out that their Dad is about to marry a woman named Meredith Blake, who only wants to marry him for his money. Will the twins get their parents to fall in love with each other all over again? I absolutely adore this film and love the performances the actors gave. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys having a laugh! :)

The Odd Life Of Timothy Green (DVD) 20/11/2014

The average Disney movie

The Odd Life Of Timothy Green (DVD) The Odd Life Of Timothy Green is a fantasy-comedy drama film which was released in 2012. It was produced by Walt Disney Pictures and was co-written and directed by Peter Hedges. It stars CJ Adams as Timothy Green, the lead role. Plot: The film starts with Cindy and Jim Green (Jennifer Garner and Joel Edgerton) trying to persuade an adoption agency to let them adopt a child. They explain their experience with a boy named Timothy as an effort. The Greens were desperate to have a baby, even though medical experts told them that it wasn't possible. Then, even though upset, Jim convinces Cindy that they should write everything they want their dream child to be like on slips of paper and bury it in a box in their garden. However, after a thunderstorm which seemingly only affects the Greens' property, they find a ten-year-old boy covered in mud in their house claiming the Greens as his own parents. Then, finding the box they buried smashed to pieces and a hole where it had been, they realize that the boy, named Timothy, is actually their dream child. But there was one thing not quite right - Timothy had leaves growing out of his ankles. And that was the start of a magical turn of events. My Opinion: I think this movie was quite a good movie, although I have seen better, especially from Disney. CJ Adams did a good job of portraying Timothy Green, who obviously has a very, very odd life. But his character makes people think, he isn't afraid to tell the truth and sends a message ...

Frozen (DVD) 20/11/2014

A great Disney film!

Frozen (DVD) I'm sure most people know about the movie Frozen. For those who don't know, Frozen is an American 3D computer-animated musical fantasy-comedy film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios, released in 2013. It was directed by Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck and was inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale 'The Snow Queen'. Plot: The story revolves mainly around two princesses - Anna and Elsa. Elsa possesses a power in which she is able to make snow, ice and frost. After Elsa's coronation as Queen, she has an emotional outburst and exposes her powers to the kingdom, as well as trapping it in eternal winter. Anna then sets off to find her sister, and makes some friends on her journey - Kristoff, an iceman; his reindeer Sven and a naive snowman named Olaf - who accompany her and help her find Elsa. So can they save the kingdom? My Opinion: Adults may not want to watch this at first, saying, "It's a kids film!' It may be, but it's not hard to fall in love with this film, and even easier to fall in love with the characters! We meet so many different characters, the plot never gets boring. It just grabs your attention and makes you want to sit down and watch it. And what would we do without the music interludes? 'Do You Want To Build A Snowman' and 'Let It Go' have been so popular with viewers. The tunes are really catchy, it's hard not to remember it. This would be a really good film to watch at Christmas and with the family, seeing as it has a winter kind of theme. It ...

Hard Candy (DVD) 19/11/2014

The internet can be a dangerous place...

Hard Candy (DVD) Hard Candy is a thriller film released in 2005. It focuses on a 14-year-old vigilante, who later on in the film tortures a suspected sexual predator whom she had met on the internet. The film stars Patrick Wilson as Jeff and Ellen Page as Hayley, was directed by David Slade and was written by Brian Nelson. This was the first feature film for Slade, as he had previously worked in mostly music videos. Hard Candy focuses on the topic of paedophilia, a subject which is handled sensitively. It's a film which is very strong on dialogue and both Patrick Wilson and Ellen Page were brilliant on perfecting what must have been two very difficult parts to play. Hard Candy: The film opens with a flirtatious online chat between Hayley and Jeff in a 'Teen' chat room. They have been chatting regularly for some time now and Hayley is beginning to feel more comfortable with Jeff, therefore innocently flirting with him. The conversation turns a bit sexual, with Jeff admitting to 'fantasizing' about her and calling her 'baby'. They then arrange to meet up for coffee later on in the day. Jeff buys her food, a present, and impresses her with his knowledge of music. Then Hayley succeeds in convincing Jeff to take her to his house. Jeff's walls are covered in large portraits of teenage girls, as he is a photographer. Hayley is excited, and makes them both screwdrivers after hinting that young girls shouldn't accept drinks they haven't prepared themselves. As they continue to drink. Hayley asks ...

The Chronicles Of Narnia - The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe (DVD) 14/10/2014

A Magical World

The Chronicles Of Narnia - The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe (DVD) This film is an adaptation of the first novel of the fantasy adventure series by C.S Lewis. This is one of my all-time favorite films! It was directed by Andrew Adamson, who happened to have directed the 'Shrek' movies, which I also love. The story is based on the Pevensie children - Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy. They are evacuated to the countryside during the Blitz as they are endangered by the attack of German bombers. The opening scenes show an air raid and the family running to the shelter through the noise, darkness, panic. Peter, the eldest, tries to take control and look after his siblings, while his younger brother Edmund refuses to accept Peter's authority over him. Susan, the second-oldest seems quite mature, and Lucy, the youngest, is adorable in many ways. The children are evacuated to the country home of Professor Digory Kirke and his strict housekeeper, Mrs Macready. The Lion: Voiced by Liam Neeson, Aslan the great talking lion is the 'true king of narnia'. The animations are really impressive, the way he has a range of expressions and sometimes acts human, almost. But despite his gentle and loving nature, it's stated that Aslan is not tame, and can be dangerous and powerful. The Witch: It's as if the White Witch is actually made of ice. Tilda Swinton portrays her so well, her skin paper white, her eyes dark (and get black when she's angry). She meets the children first when Edmund stumbles into Narnia after following Lucy. She claims to be Queen of Narnia ...

Titanic (DVD) 13/10/2014

A heart-warming love story, the best film you'll ever see!

Titanic (DVD) I have watched this film countless times, and I still love it. I never used to like soppy romance stories, and I guess I still don't. But the Titanic film was an exception. I fell in love with it, the story-line, the characters, their love. Tears come pouring out of my eyes every time I see it! The main characters are Jack and Rose. Jack is a poor homeless man - a broke artist. He wins two tickets onto the RMS Titanic while playing poker and travels third-class with his friend. Rose, on the other hand, is a 17 year old girl who was forced into an engagement with a 30 year old man so that she and her mother could maintain their high class status after her father's death. They first meet when Rose attempts to throw herself off the ship and Jack persuades her not to. This is a gripping film, full of emotion as we witness young love, despite different class and background. The last parts of the film are, of course, the most spectacular parts of the film, where we see the ship sinking, people shouting and screaming, everyone shivering in the dark, cold and murky water. The scenes of Rose and Jack at the end will move you to tears, I tell you. As the film ends, Celine Dion's 'My Heart Will Go On' comes on. This song is one of the best-selling singles of all time. It also dominated the 1999 Grammy Awards, winning Record of the Year - the first time it had been won by a Canadian. So if you haven't seen this movie, be sure to give it a try. It's only £3.00 - plus it is the ...

Cliffhanger - Jacqueline Wilson 13/10/2014

A Real Cliffhanger!

Cliffhanger - Jacqueline Wilson Of course, this book is directed at children as Jacqueline Wilson is an outstanding children's author. I actually have almost every one of her books on my bookshelves! The story is about a young boy called Tim who is forced to go to adventure camp. Now, this Tim is kind of like a male version of me - we're both good at most things but suck at sports! Poor Tim gets teased just a bit because he can't catch a ball and play rounders. But he does make new friends, including his best friend Biscuits, who just loves to eat; Kelly, his almost-girlfriend; Giles, his sort-of-frenemy and Laura and Lesley, two other girls in their team. The teams are named after big cats. The Tigers, Lions, Panthers and Cheetahs. Tim and his friends are Tigers. The book is hilarious, with fun activities like Triangles (a bit like rounders) and abseiling! That's when you dangle off a cliff. Help! Plus at the end the teams play a special Bucket Race! If you want to find out who wins the race and what happens to Tim and his buddies, well, read the book! It only costs £4.99!
