BlackSite: Area 51 (PS3) 28/06/2009

AverageSite

BlackSite: Area 51 (PS3) BlackSite, a game that I would always spot popping up on places like Play.com and Amazon. Noticing that I could get a fresh copy from third party sellers for around £10, I decided why not give it a go and have another PS3 game to add to my collection. After about an hour of playing this game, I soon realised why there were copies selling for £10! Plotline Starting off in the Iraq war, your squad is assigned to a designated area which is rumoured to contain weapons of mass destruction. However, it turns out something a lot more scientific is going on and could be a potential hazard to the entire world rather than making the current war more dramatic... Due to this story, I became quite confused right away. After defeating so many Iraqi soldiers and getting the feel of a typical shooter, suddenly loads of monsters appeared out of nowhere with little explanation and instantly gave me that feel of: "What the heck?!" but I guess that’s what the developers had in mind after all. A few plot twists occur that I never expected and resulted in me becoming more interested to see what else would happen. Wasn't really the gameplay that kept me intrigued, the story kept this entertaining for me and stopped me nearly putting this back in the box forever. It got to the point where I nearly lost track of time and was almost late for work at one point. If a player struggles to put the controller down and switch off their console, then the game must be doing something right after ...

Far Cry 2 (PS3) 08/06/2009

Almost a masterpiece

Far Cry 2 (PS3) Despite never playing the first in the series, I was quickly taken in by the consistent advertisements shown on television commercials. Showing off the clear high definition graphics of pure action and suspense. Even though I had not even read any reviews, I quickly ordered the game and took a chance. Snapping up the limited edition for the sake of it, a big metal box. Plotline Far Cry 2 takes place in a fictional country in Eastern Africa, completely corrupted with civil war, anarchy and corruption. A massive war is brewing up between two sides in this country, weapons being supplied to them by a well known terrorist and arms dealer known as "The Jackal". Your mission is to assassinate him to put an end to this pointless conflict, having you secretly flown into the country as a one man army. The general story takes a whole to develop and starts off extremely slow, not really giving the player a good idea of what is going on unless done their research online or read the manual thoroughly. After a few missions, I soon realised what was going on and my objectives soon became clear. However, not really the most exciting of plots or storylines. The gameplay makes up for it though, with many forms of side stories to keep players distracted from the main. A few characters are available to choose, each with their own unique, nationality and personality. Haven't really noticed any difference in terms of their skills, they all seem evenly matched with no differences. Every ...

Grand Theft Auto 4 (PS3) 01/06/2009

Mr. Niko Belic and me

Grand Theft Auto 4 (PS3) Ah yes, the next Grand Theft Auto in the popular franchise. The first game I played with my new Playstation 3 back in July 2008. It was a tough choice to put in Grand Theft Auto 4 or Metal Gear Solid 4, but it just had to be GTA 4 for sure. My console did come with Haze, but that doesn't even compare to this bonified work of art! Thanks to the usual addictiveness of a new Grand Theft Auto game, I didn't even touch my other new PS3 games for weeks until I completed the storyline. Opening the box, I was immediately greeted with a massive two sided map of the game's city. Knowing this would come in handy for a large sandbox type of game like Grand Theft Auto is. Along with that, was a unique game manual wrote in a form of tourist guide. Thought that was rather amusing at the time and a little different. Plotline Niko Belic, a Serbian immigrant and ex soldier from the Bosnian war seeks a life in the land of opportunity of America and in Liberty City (New York). Hoping to forget his troubled background and former criminal past, looking to find a job with his cousin Roman. However, he soon realises that nothing has changed with his move and that his cousin is in mass debt with gangsters. Niko sets out to help his cousin clear his debt in order for them to have a life of luxury in Liberty City. Although later in the game, its revealed that Niko is looking for someone that betrayed his army unit back in the war... It seems like a promising storyline and a great plot, but sadly ...

Doom RPG (Mobile Phone) 27/05/2009

Doom on the go

Doom RPG (Mobile Phone) Never thought I would see it happen, but yes, classic retro Doom on a mobile phone. Almost exactly the same game, but this time revamped into a role-playing type game. After getting fed up with the demo games that were included with my phone, I decided to build up my library with some purchased games. To my surprise, I saw this, the Doom RPG. I immediately made a purchase after looking at the screenshots. Plotline Doom RPG uses a story very much like the plot based on the movie and on Doom 3. The player, known as Marine, is sent to one the corporate bases on Mars to investigate some distress signals and bizarre happenings deep in the base. After talking with a few of the employees, scientists and guards, it turns out that someone very strange is happening and not just a typical marine operation taking out terrorists. Strange monster like creatures have invaded the base, out of nowhere with no explanation. As the marine progresses further into the base taking on these demons and other obstacles, more baffling twists occur. Gameplay Fans of the original Doom will be able to jump immediately into this, as many of the elements from the game are still inputted. Using the first person view mode combined into a role-play style, turn based type combat and decisions. Due to the turn based style, each decision your player uses will be delayed. For instance: moving one screen forward will mean the enemy behind you will also move a screen forward or attack you on their turn. ...

F-15 Strike Eagle II (Mega Drive) 21/05/2009

Take a ride into the Danger Zone

F-15 Strike Eagle II (Mega Drive) F-15 Strike Eagle, one of my favourite flight simulator games of all time and still find myself going back to it at least once a year. Loved this game when I was a kid and one of the very first plane games I ever had the pleasure of playing. I first played this on my Amiga computer back in the day and later tried this through a Mega Drive emulator. A few differences between the two ports, but very little which I'll explain later on. Plotline Not really much detail in terms of a storyline for the Strike Eagle series. You as the player are a fighter pilot, in control of one of the top aircraft at the time, the F-15 now obsolete compared to the new F-22. So in terms of a storyline, it's generally up to the player to use their imagination. If doing missions on the Gulf War scenario, the story would be pretty much self-explanatory. There are eight campaigns to choose from: Libya, The Gulf, Vietnam, Middle East, Nordkapp, and Europe. Europe being the hardest by far and taking place in some future type war that hasn't occurred in real life. Gameplay Much of this game is definitely inspired by Tom Cruise's movie, Top Gun. When selecting the difficulty for your pilot, the lowest difficulty picture of the rookie pilot looks just like Tom Cruise. Also the hardest difficulty, ace mode, looks just like retired pilot in that movie who inspires him to carry on his career. Each difficulty will make the game harder or more realistic depending on what the player chooses. For ...

Cliffhanger (Mega Drive) 20/05/2009

Don't hang onto this

Cliffhanger (Mega Drive) Yes, Cliffhanger game based on the movie starring Sylvester Stallone. One of my favourite action/adventure movies of all time and one I would keep watching once in a while when I was kid. After browsing through my Sega Mega Drive rom collection on my laptop for something to play, I came across this and decided to give it a go and review later. Completely disappointed as soon as I dove into this so called game... Plotline Exactly the same as the movie's and put into the game as much as possible, with every level trying to match specific scenes. A small plane has crashed into the Rocky Mountains and has issued a distress signal to mountain rescue. Gabe, Sylvester Stallone, and his colleague Hal head to the rescue right away. However, it turns out the plane carrying the survivors were actually terrorists trying to hijack a treasury jet in mid-air with the cases of money being scattered all over the mountain area. Gabe manages to escape, however Hal is still taken hostage. Gabe must recover the cases first in order to keep Hal alive to use as an exchange or his life. Gameplay As soon as the player starts the game, you will immediately start to believe it’s a mimic of Streets of Rage. Same kind of engine moving the character across the screen with enemies appearing from the edge attacking. Either carrying a weapon or not. Almost the same type of game with a few new features to make it different from the typical side scrolling fighting game. Gabe can use several attacks to ...

Adidas Sport Field Eau de Toilette 12/03/2009

This is not Adidas' finest hour

Adidas Sport Field Eau de Toilette Back in 2003, I would have given this a five star rating easily. However buying the newer upgraded version of this aftershave, I'm completely disappointed. Adidas, why fix something that was never broken? I can understand the original may never have taken off but there had to be people out there like me who were fond of the original model. After my first bottle of this was finally empty, I decided to look for a new one. However I was not surprised to see it wasn't really on the market anymore, as several years had passed now. I looked on E-Bay and the results came up with the same bottle, looking slightly different from the previous type I had been using for years. With nothing to lose, I thought I would give the newer version a go, despite it looking slightly different. Scent and Smell Like the title appears, the scent will come across as a fairly light and refreshing scent. That of something you would smell on a sporting field or stadium, which they've possibly combined with aftershave ingredients. Quite a sharp scent when smelt at first, although soon becomes very light when sprayed onto human skin and not much is needed to cover the majority of the face. Refreshing power and that refreshing feel. It has woken me up slightly everytime in the morning and does combine well with clean skin after a wash. Price Despite not finding this product anywhere in the shops these days, you'll more than likely find it scattered on E-Bay for around £4 - 5. Plenty of sellers ...

Member Advice on Running 11/03/2009

Run, Forest! Run!

Member Advice on Running As a regular jogger and runner since late 2004, I've felt like sharing my experiences and tips found over the years. Tips and Advice Correct footwear is rather vital to your success as a regular runner. Find some comfortable running shoes and then continue to use them every time. Footwear that rubs or even cause you some pain around your toes or shins, stop using them. Even if they were so expensive and look great, don't bother, go for a pair that you can train with. After all, spectators and people around you won't be staring at your feet when you run by. I can't stress this enough, but every runner must stretch most areas of their body for at least ten minutes before going out for a run and even afterwards too. A stretched and warmed up body will decrease the chances of you getting injured or even pulling a muscle. Experiencing stitches will also be quite frequent when the human body hasn't fully been stretched and usually a sign that the body is quite unfit. There are many forms of stretching, however I've found bending legs and putting pressure on it with hands usually does the trick properly. Despite the joy of running, it will come with physical pain every time. A lot of this can be from the brain activating your pain receptors constantly, so a lot of tricks need to be implemented to suppress your brain activity. Thinking about the pain and saying to yourself that you cannot go on will not make things any easier and will sadly increase your pain. Your thoughts ...

688 Attack Sub (Mega Drive) 25/02/2009

10 out of 10 Attack Sub

688 Attack Sub (Mega Drive) The first submarine simulation game I played when I was a kid and despite its retro status, I still find myself playing it once in a while. Even though I mainly played the Amiga version when I was a kid, the Mega Drive version is literally the same and I'm currently trying it out again years later through an emulator. Plotline Taking place during the Cold War between the USA and the Soviet Union. 688 Attack Sub uses the what if scenarios and shows the worst what could have happened all those years ago. Starting from minor threats between the two countries and eventually turning into a world war. Gameplay The entire interface gives you that instant feeling that you're inside a submarine and in total command. As you can see from one of my pictures, there are several stations that need to be commanded and waiting for orders. Moving the cursor onto a particular person on that bridge will bring up a new window, such as the torpedo room, navigation and engine room, sonar/radar room, radio room etc. Starting the game will give you the choice of being the Americans or the Soviets. Very much the same, but have their slight differences in terms of submarines. For instance, the Americans have better weaponry where as the Soviets have faster and more stealthy vessels. The briefing and radio room is what it should do, bringing in faxes of your mission order or mission updates. This is where the HQ will dish out your commands and give you your mission objectives for the ...

Shadowrun (Mega Drive) 24/02/2009

Underrated and lost in the shadows

Shadowrun (Mega Drive) Like my title says, a very underrated and forgotten game for the Sega Mega Drive. Even I never knew it existed back in 90s. It was when downloading ROMs for my Mega Drive emulator that I tried this game out and was immediately addicted. Plotline The story follows a man named Joshua, seeking revenge and vengeance for his brother Michael's death. Michael was a mercenary and was attacked by unknown assailants. By taking up missions for gangs and clients, Joshua will boost his reputation to gain information about the truth. The game takes place in a very corrupt future with the date of 31st January 2058, in Seattle. Morals have broken down and society has turned into what is known as a cyberpunk type world. Countries have even formed together. America in the game's storyline is named United Canadian and American States. Very much like what is more than likely going to happen, high corporations mostly run the show more than the actual governments. Gameplay Before I break down all the information on the gameplay, this game is pretty much exactly like a Keanu Reeves film called Johnny Mnemonic. Different story, but so many same elements and I do believe that the director was a strong fan of Shadowrun and thought maybe to 'borrow' some of the game's ideas for his film. Shadowrun was released a year before the film was released, even more of a coincidence. The entire game engine uses a sandbox third person style mixed in with a role-playing style. Much interactivity can ...

Sonic the Hedgehog (Mega Drive) 23/02/2009

Blue, spikey, fast, role model and a legend

Sonic the Hedgehog (Mega Drive) Sonic the Hedgehog, the first game in the series that would spark a legacy for Sega and create their icon for the company. I can't imagine anyone who hasn't heard of Sonic now. An excellent role model for kids during the 90s and I believe he still is. Doing everything for the right thing, high determination and never giving up against the bad guys. This game is the second highest selling game for the Sega Mega Drive, right behind Sonic 2. Up until now, it has sold over four million copies worldwide. Plotline The hero, Sonic, has to stop a crazy power mad obese man named Dr Robotnik. Robotnik is after magical crystals named the Chaos Emeralds which will allow him to rule the South Island. The warped dr. has also captured Sonic's friends along the way and robotised them to fight against Sonic. If Sonic destroys them, it will free them from their robot shell. Doing this will raise your entire game score. Collecting all the Chaos Emeralds in the game will trigger the extended ending once the game has been completed. I have never achieved this, due to the emeralds being scattered in some tricky places but have watched the ending on YouTube. Spoiled the fun though, so I don't recommend doing that! Much more satisfying to work for it. Gameplay Each stage will contain golden rings scattered everywhere, mostly hovering in the air. Collecting 100 of these will grant Sonic an extra life, which are more than vital in order to progress through the game properly. One ring or ...

Road Rash (Mega Drive) 20/02/2009

Rashing for the big bucks

Road Rash (Mega Drive) The joys of Rash Rash back in the day. Extremely popular game for its time and another highlight of Sega and it's fan base. Such a shame the series has been on a decline in the late 90s, it would be great to see a game on a latest machine. Racing combined with mindless violence and then getting rewarded for it. I mean, what more could you ask for back in the day? It definitely sparked some ideas for the Grand Theft Auto Series. Plotline The objective of the game is to compete against many other bikes on different race courses and end up finishing in the top three to win money. The player will receive more depending on what position the player finished and how long the entire race was. There are no rules and all racers can do anything to win. This includes knocking each other off with weaponry, pushing one another into oncoming cars, or knocking them off near the police so they get arrested. Gameplay Many forms of races can be picked and have different environments. One for a desert, grassland, hills, coast etc. Each will need to be qualified on to reach the next level in Road Rash. Meaning every type of race will need the player to finish in third place or higher. After this is achieved, the player is then taken to a higher level of racing. Same tracks, but against tougher bikers, police and racing conditions. For bigger money to spend on better bikes. There are two weapons to acquire in the game, a baseball bat and a chain. Both cause high damage to other ...

Midnight Resistance (Mega Drive) 19/02/2009

Resistance is not futile

Midnight Resistance (Mega Drive) One of my favourite games of the 90s and constantly went back to it even when completing it many times. I and my best friend at the time had some great multiplayer action and this one of the first games that taught me the value of teamwork and help in real life. Plotline The main character, John Ford is on a mission to stop a crazy life form named the 'The Crimson King' who has plans to take over the entire planet. The main villain has also kidnapped the hero's father, giving him more reason to complete his mission. Later in the story, John learns that the Crimson King has kidnapped his entire family and not just his father. Different ports of this game, such as the Amiga version, had slightly modified stories. The villain is named 'The Commissar' and is using his grandfather to create a secret new weapon. However, pretty much the same type of story with the occasional difference. Although, the story is quite weak and doesn't really take off. There really isn't much of an explanation to say what is going on and as a kid, I had no idea what was happening. It was only when halfway through the game where my character reached a big TV screen, where the main villain appeared on it saying something like: "Ha-ha we have your family!" and then a speech bubble appears from your hero saying: "Nooo! Oh my god!" Fairly cheesy and just seemed so random to appear when this game is pure action. Gameplay The entire control system will either work in the player's favour or not ...

Urban Strike (Mega Drive) 18/02/2009

Cleaning up the streets

Urban Strike (Mega Drive) The third game in the series and caused a lot of excitement back in the 90s for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis. I one for was dead excited to finally play it. I didn't even have a Mega Drive so had to keep playing it on my friend's, to the point where I realised I completed the entire game. Plotline The player is called back from his recent holiday to deal with a new terrorist threat. A former presidential candidate and millionaire that is hell bent on overthrowing the government with a private army and a secret high technology weapon still being developed. An insane cult leader named H.R. Malone. This is actually quite shocking to write out. The game is set during 2001 and there is a scene in the game where the World Trade Centre, Twin Towers are attacked by terrorists. Scary, no? The game however was made by EA Games during 1994. The terrorist attack is not by planes either, but with a secret weapon which I don't want to spoil for anyone. Gameplay Urban Strike introduces a new feature that fans were asking for, the ability to land your chopper and get out on foot. Sadly, it?s really not as great as it sounds and is extremely frustrating. First off, you can't land anywhere and get out on foot anytime. It happens in a certain point of the mission to complete a certain main objective. The game then triggers a new 2D engine, a bird's eye view from an angle. The player generally can't see what?s coming up ahead and always gets shot before you have a chance to react. The ...
