Air Berlin 27/05/2008

Another useless Budget Airline? Not this time

Air Berlin I started flying with Air Berlin about two years ago, until then i'd never heard of them but they offered a cheap flight to where i had to go so i thought i'd give them a go. I've heard alot of horror stories about so called budget airlins and wasn't really expecting alot but to be honest, i was very pleasantly surprised. The flight ran smoothly, the staff were friendly and the food was ok, especially as it was free. I have since then flown many a times with this airline and am more than happy with it every time. I havealso signed up with there top bonus loyalty programme and fly with them at every available opportunity. The service offered on board is always friendly and helpful and the prices are more often than not very reasonable. When on board i have also been offered a free Roll/sandwich and drink (tea, cola, fruit juice and so on) and they are not the worst i've had on board a plane before, granted they are not great but they are edible lol. The leg room was alos acceptable, i am reasonalby tall and have problems sometimes when flying due to this, however i have found that i always have enough room. I have only needed to contact them once, this was when a confirmation email that was sent to me was lacking some details, i got sraight throught to a real person (a novelty these days) and they sent me a new confirmation by email that was correct within minutes of putting the phone down. The airmiles programme that is offered is also very good, with free ...

More Brain Training: Dr Kawashima's How Old Is Your Brain (Nintendo DS) 27/05/2008

More more more brain training

More Brain Training: Dr Kawashima's How Old Is Your Brain (Nintendo DS) After discovering the fantastic little gadget that is the Nintendo Ds, i wanted to see what all the fuss was about with the original Brain Training, and i have to say i found it surprisingly enjoyable, however it was buggy with bad writing recognition and the games became old fairly quickly, thats why after the first month or so the game was consigned to the cupboard, then came the release of more brain training, assuming it to be an attempt to milk the franchise to the maximum with nothing really new, i steered clear of it, However after hearingg good things and being intrigued by a couple of tv adverts i decided sod it, i'll give it a go. The layout and how the game is played remain the same, however i noticed a few major differences, firstly it is alot harder to get the brain age of 20 or a high score on some of the programmes and secondly the programmes in more brain training are alot more fun than the previous version. See below for programme list and what you have to do in each one: Brain Age Check Rock, Paper, Scissors Name says it all, you will see rock paper or scissors on the screen and will be asked to win or lose, just say the right answer to progress. Continuous Countdown You get given a larger number and a smaller number and have to repeatedly subtract the smaller from the larger until no longer possible. Speedy Symbols You'll see a list of numbers with symbols next to them, you will be given a number and must write the symbol that is next to ...

All the Right Reasons - Nickelback 27/05/2008

All the right reasons to buy this album

All the Right Reasons - Nickelback After hearing the classic 'if everyone cared' on the radio, i decided to give the album a try. I'm not normally a fan of Rock msuic but this album quite literally blew me away. Full of hard Rock with moments of deep thought the album offers alot of variety and top music from the canadian band. I can honestly say that there isn't a bad song on this album, (quite possibly the first album i have ever said that about) and no songs that you automatically skip, every song grabs your attention and forces you to listen to the end. There are also three bonus tracks at the end which are live performances and prove conclusively that this band can play live too. After buying this album i was impressed enough to buy the first four albums from nickelback as well and although all good in their own right, none come close to this in terms of consistency and quality. I would also recommend the version with the dvd over the simple cd, the content on the dvd is also quality, with videos of the top hits form the cd and a documentary of the group on tour with interviews and so on. And now to the performance of the album in the charts and critic: In the UK, the album opened at #13 before quickly leaving the top 75 with no top 20 singles, with "Savin' Me" the first single soméhow missing the top 75 altogether. In early 2008, a it experienced a resurrection due to the single "Rockstar" becoming Nickelback's highest charting single ever in the UK. The album reached #2 and has also been ...

Philly Joe's Beat/Philly Joe & Elvin Jones Together! - Philly Joe Jones 25/10/2007

not as bad as expected, not too bad at all

Philly Joe's Beat/Philly Joe & Elvin Jones Together! - Philly Joe Jones As an Adam Sandler fan i didn't get around to seeing this film for a long time, the reason being that the opinions and revies i had seen and heard of it were not the best. In the end i decided to buy the dvd and give it a go, if nothing else it completed my Adam Sandler collection lol. I must say after watching the film, my opinions are still mixed, it is not the usual Adam Sandler film and although funny in parts, i would necessarily call it a comedy. The story behind the film is a Mexican mother, Flor (Paz Vega) moves to America with her daughter Christina (Shelbie Bruce) to search for a better life. She gets a job as housekeeper for the Clasky Family, John Clasky (Adam Sandler), Deborah Clasky (Tea Leoni), Bernice (Sarah Steele), Georgie (Ian Hyland) and Deborah's mum Evelyn (Cloris Leachman) (surprisingly one of the more comicial characters in the film). The film is told like a story and narrated by Christina, who spends half of the film translating what her mother says until Flor learns english for herself. As the film goes on the bond between John (Sandler) and Flor (Vega) grows as the problems between Deb and John increase. The children involved also have an important role in the film as the film shows the relationship between Flor and Christina deteoriating as well as the relatonship between Deb and her daughter and Adam Sandler plays mr niceguy with the bad wife and personal stress. Sandler is surprisingly good in this different role and the film is ...

Pro Evolution Soccer 6 (Nintendo DS) 19/10/2007

Looks poor, plays ok but nothing special

Pro Evolution Soccer 6 (Nintendo DS) Disappointing! I am a huge football fan and after buying my ds a while back i decided a football game is a must. After my first match i was regretting my purchase, the graphics on this game are absolutely terrible, the players have no detail to them and just look like lines, the gameplay is very simple and the fact that konami have tried to include special techniques and skills is laughable, they are far to complex to use in a match and end up losing you the ball anyway. The sound is also very very poor, there is a little music on the title menu but during gameplay just a whistle every now and then and the line 'and it's in the net GOAL' for a goal, playing with sound is is actually pointless. The number of teams you can play as is also very limited as well as the player names, this game lacks licenses! You can play with the following club teams: Arsenal Manchester United Inter AC Milan Parma AS Roma Bayern Munich FC Porto Celtic Rangers There are also many international teams 57 in total plus a few classic teams for completing the world tour mode, all however with false players and only a few are worth using. It is also annoying that this game a severe lack of licenses, apart from the top nations all of the others have false name players, even some of the top nations, e.g the German team doesnt have one correct name. The good thing is that you can edit the players including the names so this can be put right, it is just a little annoying that you have ...

Mind of the Strategist - Kenichi Ohmae 18/10/2007

From the mind of a Genius

Mind of the Strategist - Kenichi Ohmae Since being originally published in 1975 in Japan and 1982 in English, this becomes has almost become a bible for strategists and business enthusiasts and students. It has sold over 200000 copies worldwide and been translated into many languages. First a few words to the Author, Kenichi Ohmae known as Mr Strategy in Japan is a best selling Author and extremely successful business man. He was until his retirement the chairman of McKinsey and Company in Japan and leader of its strategic management practise. I first came across this book in the strategic managemnt unit of my degree, this book and Competetive Strategy from Michael Porter were to books given as essential reading. Until this point i had never heard of Kenichi Ohmae and wasn't to interested in strategy, however the sheer power of this book changed my thinking. The main thing about this book for me was the way in which it is written, i have alot of experience with business books and texts from my degree course, but this book introduced me to something new. It is not the usual practise of reading about standard methods and ways in which business can or should be run, it doesn't give set formulas for succeeding in business or use case studies, the aim of this book is to change how you look at the business world and to open your mind up to more possibilities. The Author tries to show that there is no set busienss rules and that truly great businesses are born from great strategy and that all comes from a great ...

Reign Over Me (DVD) 17/10/2007

It will reign over you

Reign Over Me (DVD) I bought this dvd as an Adam Sandler fan, but this is in a completely different category of film. A touching film with a few moments of comedy which puts things into perspective. Adam Sandler plays Charlie Fineman, a man who lost his family in the terrible events of 9/11, they were in one of the planes that was flown into the towers and Don Cheadle plays Alan Johnson, the forer college roommate of Fineman who he hasn't seen since college. Charlie has fallen into a so called lost world, he chooses to forget as much as he can about his former life and falls into a life of playing video games and collecting records. Alan has continued up the career ladder after leaving college and has now become a dentist with his own practise. Alan sees Charlie one day in the street but Charlie doesn't recognise him, the story then goes on as Alan becomes concerned for his former friend and tries to rebuild the friendship, what he fails to realise is that there is hardly anything left of his former friend. The film also shows the problems that alan has, such as family problems and the usual porblems for en as they grow older and miss their youth, thats what makes the chemistry so great, Alan sees in Charlie a complete other side of life and it helps remind him how lucky he is to have what he has, it also gives Alan the opportunity to break from his boring routine and live a little again. The film tells Charlies story and shows how Alan tries to help him as well as the other ...

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX07EB-K 15/10/2007

An expensive mistake!

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX07EB-K Overall this is a very good camera, it is relatively easy to use and you can navigate your way around it using the wheel at the top. It looks good, feels good and its a great tool for taking photos. However for my personal tastes is this model dissapointing. I don't like the zoom fuction and how it is operated, to zoom with this camera, you dhave to turn a notch on a wheel, something that i find very annoying, it is designed that way in order to siplify the use but i feel it complicates it. The 7.2 megapixels is always a nice number but i feel the pictures that you get from this camera don't do the number any justice, i can see no difference between the pics form this camera and those from a 5 mp camera. The anti-blurr software is also useless in my opinion, it takes a lifetime sometimes for the autofocus to work and then you still get blurred photos at the end, independent fom how still you hold your hand. On the positive side the camera has a quick start up time and time in between shots and comes with a large lcd screen and that is always useful to see if the photos are blurred, something you will need with this camera. The camera is in my opinion an average camera, it's nothing special but there is also alot worse available, however it does not justiy its price, look for a cheaper alternative with maybe slightly lower numbers but i guarantee the performance won't be different Specs: 7.2-megapixel 28mm wide angle f/2.8 LEICA DC lens 3.6x optical ...

Samsung YP-U1Z 1GB 13/10/2007

Bargain!!!

Samsung YP-U1Z 1GB I've had this wonderful little mp3 player for about a year and half now and it can still do no wrong by me. It comes with 1gb of memory, in my opinion that's enough. It connects via usb to a computer and can also be used as a memory stick. The way in which it connects with a computer is ingenious. The usb connector is hidden within the player and must be folded out, but don't worry that is very simple, just slide the cover back and it comes out. It looks very stylish and the buttons are very cool. It is also very durable, i've lost count of how many times i've dropped and there is not a scratch on it and performance is as good as ever. It also comes with a surprisingly useful set of headphones. The battery life is very good and i haven't had any problems with it yet. The sound quality is also that what you would expect, very high quality, doesn't sound tinny or worse. There is also no shortage of information that is displayed on the screen, from the song name, battery meter, effect in use, volume, song time and so on. I am delighted that i chose this mp3 player and the price was right to, i can only recommend it. Features: Dimensions (WxDxH): 2.4 cm x 1.3 cm x 8.6 cm Weight: 34 g Sound Output Mode: Stereo Sound Effects: Bass Boost, SRS WOW Equaliser Factory Presets: Normal, Rock, Jazz, Classic Supported Digital Audio Standards: WMA, ASF, Ogg Vorbis, MP3 clip so that it can be hung around the neck

Samsung YP-U3 2GB black 13/10/2007

Finally an mp3 player with no flaws!

Samsung YP-U3 2GB black I've had this wonderful little mp3 player for a couple of months now and it can do no wrong by me, i love it! It comes with 2gb of memory, in my opinion that's perfect, roughly 500 songs is enough for me lol, it is has flash memory so you can use it as a memory stick as well and not just for music. It looks very stylish and the buttons are very cool. It is also very durable, i've lost count of how many times i've dropped and there is not a scratch on it and performance is as good as ever. It also comes with a surprisingly useful set of headphones and is available in 5 different colours black, pink, green, white and light blue. The battery life is very good, it claims 15 hours and i have had that out of it. I used it just last week on a train journey that took 2 hours and when i got home i just put it down and forgot to turn it of, as i woke up the next morning it was still playing music, so the battery is very good. The sound quality is also that what you would expect, very high quality, doesn't sound tinny or worse. The display is also cool, a black background with blue text and looks very stylish. There is also no shortage of information that is displayed on the screen, from the song name, battery meter, effect in use, volume, song time and so on. I am delighted that i chose this mp3 player and the price was right to, i can only recommend it. Aloha from Hawaii via Satellite (Live Recording) - Elvis Presley 13/10/2007

This is how to sing live!!!

Aloha from Hawaii via Satellite (Live Recording) - Elvis Presley On the 14th January 1973, Elvis Presley gave a show at the Honolulu International Centre (in aid of the 'Kui Lee Cancer Fund', that would be beamed around the world, via satellite. It was seen by nearly one and a half BILLION people. The show in which Elvis threw his 1000$ cape into the crowd. This cd included every song recoreded live from the concert and there are also the additional songs recorded for the american version e.g. Ku-u-i-po and Hawaain Wedding song. The sound quality is also excellent, especially considering how old the recording is and the sound is first class. The digital remasterers earned their fee with this one. My view: Simply brilliant! It is an absolute pleasure to be able to listen to one of the greatest talents ever to walk the earth in his prime. I have never seen anything that is even comparable to this, the concert itself its breathtaking with amazing performances of classics such as Suspicious Minds, Hound Dog and Blue Suede Shoes. As well as the best vocals i have ever heard from a live show in 'American Trilogy'. In my whole life i have never seen a live performance that comes anywhere near this, this cd will show you why Elvis is the king and why he is the greatest singer ever to have lived. Track list and my rating: 1. Introduction/Also Sprach Zarathustra 2. CC Rider 7/10 3. Burnin' Love 7/10 4. Something 8/10 5. You Gave Me A Mountain 9/10 6. Steamroller Blues 7/10 7. My Way 10/10 8. Winning: The Ultimate Business How-To Book - Jack Welch 12/10/2007

Finally a Business book worth reading

Winning: The Ultimate Business How-To Book - Jack Welch As i first heard of this book i thought yeah yeah another successful businessman who just wants to tell the world how great he is and not offer anything in the way of advice or useful tips. How wrong i was. Jack Welch is a retired former CEO and chairman of General Electric. In this book Welch gives you the benefit of all is years of experience and writes in an unprecedented honest manner. In this book welch answers the most frequent questions that he asked by aspiring managers. He explains how he did things, giving both positive and negative sides and to be fair he criticises himself as well. I found it very interesting to read about the systems implemented by welch, such as the 20,70,10 system. This is a system in which the workforce of a company is divided into the top 20 percent, the middle 70 and the bottom 10. The top 20 are showered with praise and rewards and the bottom should be removed. Those in the middle 70 need to improve themselves and make it in the top 20. This is a system that motivates all employees to do better and improves the workforce as a whole. Welches opinion on candor was also an eye opener for me. Welch belives strongly that candor is needed to be a successful company and that everybody should say what they think. I found this approach very refreshing and was interested to read how it was implemented and how it became successful. I would recommend this book to anybody with aspiriations of making it to the top, especially students, ...

Mario Slam Basketball (Nintendo DS) 12/10/2007

Mario hits a three pointer!

Mario Slam Basketball (Nintendo DS) I bought this game despite being a little sceptical, i thought nintendo was just abusing the mario franchise and that this game could never be any good, how wrong i was. This game is actually great fun and the way it is played is innovative and ingenious and i feel it is games like this that make the Nintendo DS great. The gameplay is 3 on 3 basketball with nintendo characters, such as Mario, Luigi, Bowser, Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong. The ingenious part of this game is the way that it is played, the game is played almost completely using the touch screen and the dierectional pad. The D-Pad is used to navigate the player and the touch screen is used to dribble, pass, shoot and perform skill actions. With simple movements such as tapping the screen to dribble and drawing a line up to shoot is how you play the game, and beleive me it is alot more fun than you would think. There is also a nice selection of gameplay modes available, you can play simple 3 on 3 with nomral basketball rules, 3 on 3 with mario basketball rules or play in the tournaments. When playing through the tournaments you will be awarded a gold, silver or bronze trophy depending on how much you win by, by winning certain trophies you can unlock more courts and new players as well as new balls, the game also has a very good multiplayer mode where you can play against friends. The only negatives of this game are the lack of an online mode, this would make the game practically perfect in every way and ...

Elvis Presley - Aloha From Hawaii (DVD) 12/10/2007

This is how he should be remembered!

Elvis Presley - Aloha From Hawaii (DVD) On the 14th January 1973, Elvis Presley gave a show at the Honolulu International Centre (in aid of the 'Kui Lee Cancer Fund', that would be beamed around the world, via satelite. It waws seen by nearly one and a half BILLION people. The show in which Elvis threw his 1000$ belt into the crowd. This 2 disc DVD set that gives accounts of both the the originally aired 'live' show, the rehearsal (shot a day before) and the edited version that aired in America a few months later. There are also the additional songs recorded for the american version e.g. Ku-u-i-po and Hawaain Wedding song, seen here totally uncut in the recording stage and the versions used in the show, as well as the full footage of Elvis' arrival by helicopter to the Centre. My view: Simply brilliant! It is an absolute pleasure to be able to watch one of the greatest talents ever to walk the earth in his prime. I have never seen anything that is even comparable to this, the concert itself its breathtaking with amazing performances of classics such as Suspicious Minds, Hound Dog and Blue Suede Shoes. As well as the best vocals i have ever heard from a live show in 'American Trilogy'. I would recommend this to anybody with even a slightest interest in music as without Elvis, music doesn't exist and i find it great that Elvis will live forever with this DVD set, it is just a shame that more of his performances couldn't be captured on film. Just to add the picture and sound quality on this DVD are ...

Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training: How Old Is Your Brain? (Nintendo DS) 12/10/2007

Brain Training, does it warrant all the fuss?

Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training: How Old Is Your Brain? (Nintendo DS) As a proud owner of a Nintendo DS i always figured that this game wouldn't be worth the hassle. I thought it would be to eays, relatively childish and wouldn't last long. I decided to buy it as the hype just didn't go away i thought i want to see for myself what it is about this game. I must say the game is good, it includes a variety of mini games such as 20 maths questions, head counting, triangle maths and syllable counting. There is also a sudoko option with this game that is great in its own right, there is beginners, intermediate and hard, as i am not to great at sudoko i am still yet to unlock the hard mode but with 40 puzzles per difficulty level, there is more than enough here to keep you busy and as an additional feature, you can't complain. Anyway back to the main game, the principle of this game is simple, you take a test, the result of which is an age of which your brain is, you can complete this once a day and the training programmes as often as you like. The aim of the game is to improve the age of your brain by training it and completing the tests. The training games use methods such as speaking aloud or manually writing the answer on the touch screen to take answers. Some people will also have problems the handwrinting software, as it finds it sometimes difficult to read certain writing forms. Every day on which you train, you will receive a stamp on this day in your calendar, when you complete three training exercises you will receive a larger ...
